The Polish Orthodox Diocese of Lublin and Chełm celebrated the 35th anniversary of its revival this weekend with the opening of a monument in honor of its Heavenly patron, St. Athanasius of Brest, the 16th-century Holy Hieromartyr Athanasius of Brest-Litovsk, Confessor and Defender of Orthodoxy in Poland and LithuaniaAthanasius was charged with profaning the Latin Church and the Unia. When he again denounced the Unia before his interrogators, he was thrown into prison, where the Jesuits alternately threatened him with torture and cajoled him with freedom, if he would join the Uniates. The holy monk refused to renounce his faith, crying aloud, ”Anathema to the Union!”

The monument was solemnly consecrated on Sunday, September 22, near the village of Jabłeczna in southern Podlasie, by His Eminence Archbishop Abel of Lublin and Chełm and diocesan clergy, including the abbot of the Saint Onouphrios Monastery of Jableczna, PolandSt. Onouphrios Monastery in Jabłeczna was built in the 15th century and is dedicated to the Egyptian hermit living in the 4th century. It has been the only Orthodox monastery in the area of the diocese. It played a significant role during the time of the Union of Brest, being an important centre of the Orthodox faith.

The service was also another opportunity to give thanks to God for the Polish bishops on 100th anniversary of autocephaly: “Let us bear witness that we are disciples of Christ”The main celebrations for the anniversary will be held in November, and the Polish Orthodox Council of Bishops issued a statement to the fullness of its Local Church in honor of the upcoming celebrations.

During the service, the clergy choir of the Lublin-Chełm Diocese sang under the direction of Deacon Jan Natiażko.
The area around the monument was filled with numerous faithful who had come from all corners of the diocese.
