The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has said that despite a minor incident at a section of the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) earlier today, the plant remains operational and continues to produce on-spec refined petroleum products.
The NNPC Ltd in a statement assured the public that there is no cause for concern, as all sections of the recently rehabilitated plant are in full operation.
There had been videos making the round on social media that the refinery was on fire.
In one of the videos seen by THE WHISTLER, a woman was heard at the background claiming that a smoke which bellowed from the facility was a fire incident.
But sources within the Refinery told THE WHISTLER that there was no incident of fire ir explosion at the refinery.
The source said what was shown in the video was not a fire incident but a bulk flare that came out from the flare stack.
The flare stack known as a gas flare is a tall, vertical pipe used in industrial plants like refineries and chemical plants to burn off excess or unwanted gases as a safety measure, preventing equipment overpressure.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has also refuted reports of an explosion at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) in Rivers State.
The company clarified that what occurred was a flare incident, which has since been fully contained.
“There is no danger or health hazard to staff, the surrounding communities, or the environment.
“NNPC Ltd. urges the media and the public to disregard any reports suggesting an explosion at the refinery, as they are entirely false,” Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, said.
