PDP inaugurates caretaker committee in Cross River

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated a caretaker committee to unify and rebuild the party in Cross River State ahead of future elections.

The committee, chaired by Rt. Hon. Bassey Eko Ewa, was formally inaugurated in Calabar on Wednesday October 8, 2025, in a ceremony attended by party leaders, elders, and stakeholders.

In his inaugural address, Ewa described the occasion as a time for “Renewal, Reconciliation, and Recommitment to the ideals that built the PDP into the strongest political family in Nigeria.” He acknowledged past divisions within the party, noting, “For too long, our great party in this state has been divided by personal interests and narrow leadership styles. We cannot continue with a system where the opinion of a few people, even when wrong, is treated as law, while the majority are silenced.”

He stressed the need for internal democracy and collective decision-making, stating, “No one person or group of persons has all the answers. Two good heads, as they say, are better than one.”

Reflecting on previous challenges, he added, “Under the previous administration, we lost members, we lost elections, and most painfully, we lost the trust of the grassroots, the very people who have always stood with the PDP.”

The formation of the caretaker committee follows the National Working Committee’s (NWC) decision to postpone state congresses in Cross River and two other states due to organizational challenges. The committee comprises 18 members representing each local government area of the state. Its mandate is to reconcile party members, rebuild party structures at all levels, and prepare the PDP to challenge the ruling APC both in the state and nationally.

The committee chairman appealed for unity and reconciliation, urging, “Those who stayed, those who left, and those watching from the sidelines to come back home. PDP is your home.” He declared that the committee’s work “will not be driven by personal ambition. Our focus is service. Service to the PDP! Service to Cross River!! and Service to Nigeria!!!”

Concluding his speech, Ewa called for collective action, expressing optimism that “If we work together, speak together, and stand together, the PDP will rise again, stronger, wiser, and more determined to deliver good governance to our people.” He expressed confidence in victory, saying, “With God on our side and unity in our hearts, victory is certain.”
