The left-flank has become a significant area of concern for manager Ruben Amorim, who is still in the early stages of his tenure at Old Trafford.
Amorim has struggled to implement his tactical philosophy due to the lack of a reliable wing-back on the left-hand side.
Luke Shaw’s continued fitness struggles have left him unavailable, while Tyrell Malacia appears to have failed to convince Amorim of his suitability.
As a result, Amorim has been forced to rely on right-back Diogo Dalot to operate as a makeshift option on the left.
However, Dalot has frequently looked uncomfortable and out of place playing in an unfamiliar role on the opposite flank.
Recognising the need for reinforcement, the United hierarchy has ramped up efforts to sign a specialised left-wing-back.

United have reportedly reached a “basic agreement” with Lecce star Patrick Dorgu over a January transfer.
That is according to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness.
In recent days, Lecce’s Dorgu has emerged as the club’s top priority for the position, and talks have been ongoing.
Dorgu, a 20-year-old Denmark international, has impressed with his versatility, playing as a left-back, left wing-back, right-back, and right-winger.
Manchester United have reportedly tabled an offer of €30m plus €5m in add-ons to secure Dorgu’s services.
However, Lecce rejected the proposal, maintaining that they value the young player closer to €40m, making negotiations challenging.
Despite Lecce’s stance, the Red Devils have taken a significant step forward by reaching a “basic agreement” with Dorgu himself.
Tottenham Hotspur are also understood to be interested in the versatile defender, adding competition for his signature.
Nevertheless, United appear to have gained the upper hand due to Dorgu’s preference for a move to Old Trafford.
An additional obstacle remains, as Lecce are keen to retain Dorgu on loan until the end of the current season.
United must now decide whether to meet Lecce’s financial demands and accommodate their loan condition to finalise the deal.
