  • University protests blast Trump’s attacks on funding, speech and international students

By RODRIQUE NGOWI and BEN FINLEY

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — University professors and students led protests on campuses across the U.S. on Thursday against what they say are broad attacks on higher education, including massive cuts to funding, the expulsion of international students and the stifling of free speech about the war in Gaza.

Trump vowed to pursue these federal cuts on the campaign trail last year, saying he would focus on schools that push “critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content.”

Republican officials have also heavily scrutinized universities where Palestinian protests erupted on campus amid the war in Gaza last year, while several Ivy League presidents testified before Congress to discuss antisemitism allegations.

Trump and other officials have accused protesters and others of being “pro-Hamas,” referring to the Palestinian militant group that attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Many protesters have said they were speaking out against Israel’s actions in the war.

The U.S. government has used its immigration enforcement powers to crack down on international students and scholars who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations or criticized Israel over its military action in Gaza. Some have been taken into custody or deported. Others fled the U.S. after learning their visas had been revoked.

‘You cannot appease a tyrant’

Thursday’s protest at Harvard comes just a few days after it became the first university to openly defy the Trump administration as it demands sweeping changes to limit activism on campus. The university frames the government’s demands as a threat not only to the Ivy League school but to the autonomy that the Supreme Court has long granted American universities.

Meanwhile, roughly 450 people showed up for a protest at the University of California-Berkeley, where emeritus professor and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich spoke out against placating Trump.

“You cannot appease a tyrant,” said Reich, who served in President Bill Clinton’s cabinet. “Columbia University tried to appease a tyrant. It didn’t work.”

Columbia University in New York initially agreed to several demands from the Trump administration. But its acting president took a more defiant tone in a campus message Monday, saying some of the demands “are not subject to negotiation.”

About 150 protesters rallied at Columbia, which had been the scene of huge pro-Palestinian protests last year. They gathered on a plaza outside a building that houses federal offices, holding signs emblazoned with slogans including “stop the war on universities” and “censorship is the weapon of fascists.”

The protests were organized by the Coalition for Action in Higher Education, which includes groups such as Higher Education Labor United and the American Federation of Teachers.

Kelly Benjamin, a spokesperson for American Association of University Professors, said in a phone call that the Trump administration’s goal of eviscerating academia is fundamentally anti-American.

“College campuses have historically been the places where these kind of conversations, these kind of robust debates and dissent take place in the United States,” Benjamin said. “It’s healthy for democracy. And they’re trying to destroy all of that in order to enact their vision and agenda.”

Finley reported from Norfolk, Virginia. Associated Press journalists Noah Berger in Berkeley, California, and Joseph B. Frederick in New York contributed to this report.

  • She was too perfect for me

A Ugandan preacher, Jonathan Nalebo, is currently trending on social media after he announced separation from his wife, Enid Mirembe, because she was “too perfect” for him to keep up with.

It was gathered that Jonathan and Enid, who have been together for seven years, were the envy of many because of their seemingly Godly and perfect relationship.

The preacher who made the announcement in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, said they have mutually decided to part ways for the sake of peace and healing.

According to Jonathan, he failed to fully honor the values Enid carries.

He further wished that Enid would find someone who cherishes her in ways he failed to.

“After more than seven years together, Enid and I have come to a place where we’ve mutually agreed to part ways—for the sake of peace, healing, and the well-being of both of us,” he wrote.

  • Tinubu fully engaged in governance – Presidency

The Presidency said on Thursday that President Bola Tinubu remained fully engaged in Nigeria’s governance even though he was away in Europe.

The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja.

He was reacting to the criticism trailing the President’s ongoing working visit to France.

The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, had during the week urged President Tinubu to cut short his visit to the European nation and return home to tackle the country’s security challenges.

Onanuga said the President left Paris for London at the weekend and had maintained constant communication with key government officials, overseeing critical national matters, including directives to security chiefs to address emerging threats in some parts of the country.

“His absence remains temporary and in line with the communicated timeframe of approximately two weeks.

“His return to Abuja and the resumption of duties at Aso Villa will follow the conclusion of the Easter holiday.

“The president’s commitment to his duties remains unwavering, and his administration continues to function effectively under his leadership.

“We appreciate the public’s concern and assure all Nigerians that governance proceeds without interruption,” Onanuga added.

A new body camera video released by law enforcement officials shows officials discovering the dead bodies of Gene Hackman, a legendary Oscar-winning actor, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in February.

According to Fox News, Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya confirmed that officials were able to immediately locate Arakawa’s body in a bathroom in the couple’s New Mexico house; however, it took officials almost 30 minutes to discover Hackman’s body in another part of the house. In a search warrant affidavit obtained by Fox News, police detectives described the deaths of the Hollywood legend and his wife as “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.”

According to Fox News, New Mexico officials confirmed that Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, while Hackman died from hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

In the bodycam video, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department officers and paramedics can be seen searching the Hollywood legend’s home. Fox News reported that officials found two live dogs in the couples’ home and one dead dog that was in a create approximately “10 to 15” feet away from Arakawa’s body. One of the dogs can be seen guarding and lying next to Arakawa’s body on the floor in the police body camera video.

The police body camera video shows that Hackman and Arakawa’s residence was very cluttered when officials arrived at the scene of the dead bodies, with clothing and other items scattered throughout the home. The video also shows police officials walking through the home and discovering Hackman’s body in a completely separate area from his wife. A female police officer can be heard noting, “Two totally separate areas.”

According to TMZ, an environmental assessment conducted by the New Mexico Department of Public Health confirmed that the Hollywood legend’s New Mexico property was infested by rodents. The New Mexico Department of Public Health reportedly found rodent nests and dead rodents in eight buildings that were detached from the main house.

  • Nigeria Governors In Jos Over Plateau Killings

State governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), on Thursday, paid a condolence visit to their Plateau State counterpart, Governor Caleb Mutfwang in Jos, the state capital.

Led by the NGF chairman and governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq the delegation commiserated with the government and people of the Plateau over the recent spate of senseless killings across farming communities in the state.

No fewer than 102 persons were killed and many others displaced, allegedly by armed herdsmen in various Plateau communities in a space of one week

Governor Abdulrazaq, who spoke on behalf of other governors on the delegation, commended the interventions of the security agencies, which he said, prevented further escalation.

Other governors that made the visit included Babagana Zulum (Borno), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi),
Hyacinth Alia (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and the deputy governor of Nasarawa State.

Describing the mindless killings as unfortunate, Governor Abdulrazaq said, “On behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the people of our states, I bring you sincere words of condolences on the unfortunate events in which many of our compatriots have lost their lives.

“We call on leaders and influencers across all communities and sectors in Plateau to join His Excellency in the task of uniting the people and restoring sustainable peace.

“Leaders, including youth leaders, should come together to speak strongly against violence of any kind. We urge that we resolve our differences through dialogue, fair negotiations, mutual respect, and perspective taking.

“Sustainable development can be a mirage in an atmosphere of tension and violence. Plateau is full of potential, especially in agriculture and tourism. But this potential could be affected negatively if we allow violence or threats of it to define how people see our communities.

“We commend His Excellency the Governor for his leadership at this critical moment. Our visit is to express our solidarity with His Excellency and the government and good people of Plateau State. We pray to God Almighty to repose the souls of the victims and restore peace to our communities.”

Responding, Plateau Governor, Mutfwang thanked the NGF delegation for the show of solidarity, describing the visit as encouraging to his people.

Mutfwang explained that on assumption of office, he concentrated on building bridges of unity across board, irrespective of faiths, and as such the renewed wanton attacks and killings in Plateau were a terrible set back.

According to the governor, his administration is open to constructive ideas and suggestions on how to address the challenges of insecurity in the state, adding that incessant mass killings in the state were totally uncalled for.

  • SF Giants’ split series on afternoon with hot heads and high tempers

PHILADELPHIA — The game had ended, but there were words left to be said.

As the Giants (13-6) walked back to their clubhouse following a 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies (11-8) to split a four-game series, a scrum of players and coaches found themselves engaged in a spirited conversation with home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi. The back-and-forth lasted roughly two minutes. Then, both sides went their separate ways.

On most days, this scene would’ve been abnormal. On an afternoon where Giants starter Jordan Hicks beefed with the Phillies — after allowing five runs over seven innings — and Cuzzi took exception to a perceived slight from San Francisco center fielder Jung Hoo Lee, one final kerfuffle felt strangely apropos.

“The umpire had a sensitive game,” Lee said through team interpreter Justin Han.

Cuzzi’s confrontation with the Giants derived from a misunderstanding in the top of the ninth inning. Lee took a 1-1 pitch from the Phillies’ Jose Alvarado for a strike, then adjusted his helmet. Cuzzi thought Lee was arguing the call since he saw Lee tap his helmet, which is how hitters challenged calls during spring training.

“Anybody that watches the Giants games knows that every pitch, I adjust my helmet. It’s every pitch,” Lee said. “I told him, ‘I don’t speak English.’ Umpire said something. I kept on saying, ‘I don’t speak English.’ I think that’s what happened.”

“We’re not letting them tap their heads,” crew chief and third base umpire Dan Bellino told the pool reporter after the game. “That would be arguing balls and strikes. So, it’s the same as arguing balls and strikes. I’m not saying that’s what he was doing or not. Phil was telling him, ‘Hey, you can’t tap your head right after a pitch that you disagree with because it looks as though you’re arguing balls and strikes.’ But, obviously, with the language barrier there, I don’t know if Lee really understood what he was saying. I think that was part of the miscommunication.”

When Cuzzi approached the Giants after the game, Lee reiterated that he doesn’t speak English and didn’t understand what was going on. According to Lee, Cuzzi told him that it was bad timing and left shortly after.

Why had it been bad timing? That answer lies in the previous eight innings.

In the bottom of the second, Hicks hit Trea Turner with an errant 100.9 mph sinker. Turner wasn’t happy. Turner’s teammates weren’t happy. Philadelphia’s bench had some words for Hicks, who was already a bit perturbed after allowing five runs in the first inning. Soon enough, Hicks would be even more upset.

In the fourth, Hicks fired a 100 mph sinker to the Phillies’ Alec Bohm. Cuzzi granted Bohm time right as Hicks was beginning to throw. Hicks expressed displeasure with Cuzzi granting Bohm time, and the two exchanged words before Hicks stepped back on the rubber. Hicks induced a double play on the very next pitch, but was still frustrated. So much so that third baseman Matt Chapman went to the mound to calm his pitcher.

“(Chapman) said, ‘We need you to be in this game. We need you to go deep in this game today,’ ” Hicks said. “Trying basically just to not get me tossed. I appreciate him for that because he’s good at defusing situations.”

The situation wouldn’t be defused for long. After striking out Bryson Stott to end the inning, Hicks chirped with the Phillies second baseman as he walked off the field. Hicks again had words for the Phillies upon completing the seventh, and Cuzzi stepped in to intervene.

“I was chirping with the dugout and their side, and he was trying to be in the middle of it,” Hicks said. “I don’t know. I wasn’t talking to him at all, so I didn’t want him in my face. I kind of just walked away and defused the situation. It was pretty much all game, back and forth everywhere.”

Added Chapman, who hit a two-run homer: “He’s a competitive guy. He really means well. I think Phil, sometimes, can get a little bit hot. So, it was two guys kind of clashing a little bit — both of them are a little hot headed. I’m glad nothing bad came out of it and he was able to stay in the game. We saw how huge that was for us. I love the competitive spirit, but glad things didn’t get out of hand.”

Hicks ended his day with a pedestrian line score — five earned runs and seven innings on a career-high 105 pitches — but the outing was impressive in that the right-hander provided length after throwing 33 pitches in the first inning. From the second inning onwards, Hicks channeled anger into premium gas.

Entering play, Hicks had touched triple digits on two occasions during his time with the Giants. Against the Phillies, Hicks hit at least 100 mph on 16 pitches, 13 of which were after the first inning, and topped out at 101.7 mph.

“We’d have been in a little trouble if we had to go (to the bullpen) early in the game,” said manager Bob Melvin. “His pitch count was going to potentially be a little bit higher in the first. I’m glad he got through it.”
