  • Our Renunciation of Christ

Robert Leinweber. Peter’s denial. Photo: wikipedia.org

And they that had laid hold on Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed Him afar off unto the high priest’s palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end. Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put Him to death; But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. And the high priest arose, and said unto Him, Answerest Thou nothing? what is it which these witness against Thee? But Jesus held His peace, And the high priest answered and said unto Him, I adjure thee by the living God, that Thou tell us whether Thou be the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard His blasphemy. What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death. Then did they spit in His face, and buffeted Him; and others smote Him with the palms of their hands, Saying, Prophesy unto us, Thou Christ, Who is he that smote Thee? Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech betrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny Me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly (Matt. 26:57–75).

The divine service for this night is deeply touching. The Gospel readings of this service are highly edifying. Let us extract from them at least one piece of edification from the story of Peter’s renunciation.

Peter, the preeminent Apostle, renounced his Teacher and Lord, renounced the One for Whom, as he said not long prior, he was ready to go to death (Lk. 22:33); and he renounced Him, afraid of being accused by a handmaid of belonging to the disciples of Christ, as though it were some criminal or shameful thing. But as great as was the fall of the preeminent Apostle, so sincere and great was his repentance. He immediately realized the sinfulness of his deed and went out and wept bitterly. He spent the rest of his life washing away his sin with tears of repentance. There’s a tradition that after that, the holy Apostle Peter woke up every night at the cock’s crow and wept, recalling his sin; such weeping caused his eyes to always be pained.

But do we not, beloved, sometimes renounce our Lord in an even more cowardly manner? Moreover, do we not renounce Him when no danger threatens us, unlike Peter? Do we not renounce Him every year, every day, sometimes for the most insignificant reasons? Peter renounced Christ and then bitterly mourned his renunciation. But we renounce Him and don’t feel bad about it. At Baptism, a cross was placed upon every one of us as a sign of our faith in Him Who was crucified for us on the Cross and as a witness to our readiness to follow Him, bearing our cross of sorrows, sufferings, and hardships. Is this sign intact? Do we always wear our cross? To the contrary, have not many Christians cast off this sign of salvation as a sign of supposed superstition, out of cowardice or even simply out of carelessness?

According to the custom inherited from the Fathers and adopted by the Apostles, good Christians pray before taking any food, asking for God’s blessing, and after taking food they thank God for the gifts of His grace. Is this done at our meals? Does anyone pray before taking food? I won’t answer this question—let each one’s conscience speak. Let it convict the guilty of the sin of apostasy from the ancient customs of faith. Those who eat without prayer do so either out of carelessness or cowardice, fearing that the sons of this evil world will call them either hypocrite or backwards for fulfilling the Church’s customs in this way. Our age, rushing forward headlong, strives away from, not towards Christ. Therefore those who remain with Christ seem to lag behind this age. Is it not because of such cowardly shame that many in our modern society don’t go to God’s churches, are absent from church services, while not only are none of them not ashamed to go to theaters, circuses, and other amusing spectacles, but consider staying at home, as a deviation from the customs of this age, a sign of backwardness?

Many of us read lots of books, many of which are devoid of content, and sometimes so immoral that good parents don’t give them to their children to read. And these books are laid out in prominent places, on our tables, in our living rooms. But you won’t find there the holiest of books—the Gospel—or any other book of a spiritual or moral character. Why? Because the master of the house is afraid that someone will see the Gospel or a similar book and say to him: “And you are with Jesus, for your conversation with this book betrays you!” (Mt. 26:73). But if we listen to the content of our conversations in our families, in our circle of friends, or in public gatherings, we’ll see the same emptiness, vanity, and the same cowardice regarding matters of faith. Sometimes they discuss the most mundane, the most trivial subjects with all seriousness; but let someone try to start a conversation about matters of faith, morality, or the upbringing of children, or mention the name of Christ, and there immediately follows either an ambiguous silence or sneering glances at the man who started such a conversation.

Is it not cowardice that also keeps a certain class of people from fulfilling the most sacred duty of Confession and Communion of the Holy Mysteries? And among those who fulfill this duty, there are many who, through their manner of fasting and preparation for Communion, seem to want to show that they’re fulfilling this as a difficult and unpleasant obligation; therefore, during this time they appear gloomy, indifferent to all Church matters, always late and approaching the most holy Sacrament without preparation, without proper reverence. This goes beyond denial of Christ; it is a mockery of Him.

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak, the Lord tells the Apostles (Mt. 26:41). And we too, brethren, must pray that we might not fall into adversity. Peter fell, but repented and washed away his fall with tears: And he went out, and wept bitterly. But we sin and don’t grieve. “What’s this?” some will say. “The times have changed: Now there is freedom for everyone in everything.” Pitiful freedom! It leads to bitter slavery—slavery to sin and the prince of this world. Others say: “This happened before and passed—it will pass now, too.” We mustn’t speak like this. We can say about the past that it has passed, but as for the future, we can’t guarantee that it will pass. Those who add sin to sin forget that by repeating sins like this they are weaving a rope that will be the instrument of their suicide, as it was for the ill-fated Judas. The more often we repeat a sin, the more difficult it is to repent. Aren’t those who commit suicide of all kinds people like this? And don’t such people typically die without repentance? Let us pray: “Our Father!… Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

  • “Help before they allow my mum to be unalived” skitmaker Zicsaloma begs as he slams LUTH over their treatment of his mother who is battling cancer (video)

Isaac Aloma, better known as Zicsaloma, has called out the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) over the treatment of his mother who is battling cancer.

The skitmaker said his mother was rushed to a hospital on the Island due to her deteriorating health but the hospital asked them to take her to LUTH where she had her first chemotherapy shot.

However, he said that on arriving at LUTH, they allegedly refused to take his mother in, rather they asked her to go to a lab close by to run some tests.

He said she was taken to the lab and after the biological materials for the test were taken, she was rushed back to LUTH.  Zic alleged that they, however, locked the gates and refused to let his mother in.

He said his mother is frail, looks like a “skeleton” and couldn’t stand, to the point doctors at private hospital they initially went to feared she may not survive. In spite of her condition, he said LUTH refused to let her in or even to provide a chair or bed for her outside.

He claimed the security said they couldn’t let her in until the result of the test was ready in three hours.

He questioned why a patient in such condition should be left unattended for hours.

He added that his attempts to get doctors to intervene proved abortive and all of them were “unempathetic”, insisting she would only be allowed in when the result of her test was out.

“Our medical team, the doctors of Nigeria, a lot of them are terrible,” the skitmaker lamented in the video.

“If you don’t have the connection, if you don’t know people, you’ll just die here. So terrible,” he concluded in the video.

Watch him speak in the video below.

  • Return of Darth Maul Confirmed in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Animated Series

Every Star Wars fan chose their side pretty quickly after the franchise came into being. Some were fascinated by the Jedi Order and The Republic, while others were pulled in by Darth Vader and The Empire’s darkness. However, no matter which side one stands on, every fan of the franchise shares the same love and adoration for Darth Maul.

However, fans bid farewell to the character’s live-action version after Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with the character only appearing as a hologram in Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. Now, fans of this character can rejoice since a new animated series centered around Darth Maul, titled Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, has been announced.

During the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation at the Star Wars Celebration, it was revealed that Sam Witwer will reprise the role of Darth Maul after lending his voice to the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars series. Not much information is available regarding the animated TV series as of now, except for the fact that it is set after the final season of Clone Wars and will revolve around Darth Maul, “Plotting to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.”

The panel also featured a clip from Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, which is being defined as dark and gritty, according to descriptions. In the clip, Darth Maul breaks out a force-sensitive Twi’lek from prison and offers to train her. In the process of breaking her out, the character also slices up some characters using his double-edged lightsaber.

As of now, we don’t have an exact release date for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, but it is said to debut sometime in 2026 on Disney+. So, let’s wait and see what awaits us…on the dark side!?

  • Half-Life 3 Could Finally Be Officially Released!

After years of silence, there’s finally new hope for Half-Life fans. A recent podcast revealed something exciting straight from inside Valve. Concept artist Evgeniy Evstratiy confirmed that a dedicated space for Half-Life 3 exists within the company.

New Hope for Half-Life Fans: Space for Half-Life 3 Confirmed at Valve

He stated that while he hasn’t directly seen them making the game, he did enter the room set up for its development. According to him, the room had computers, whiteboards, and tools meant for building the game. This is the clearest sign in years that Valve may be working on Half-Life 3 again.

This isn’t the first time fans have heard whispers of the game. Over the past two decades, there have been several rumors. In some cases, development was even started but later scrapped. Still, Evstratiy’s comments give the community something more concrete than past leaks.

Just before this podcast released, gaming insider Tyler McVicker made headlines as well. He said that developers have already placed Half-Life 3 in the final stages of development and will reveal it in 2025. McVicker has a history of accurate Valve-related leaks which makes his statements hard to dismiss.

With Evstratiy’s comments, McVicker’s claim becomes even more believable. Two separate sources with relations to Valve are corroborating each other. Which is more than enough to get longtime fans both excited—and cautious.

Valve’s last release was Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, which was a highly acclaimed, VR-exclusive prequel to the series. Despite its critical reception, many players have long anticipated a direct continuation of the series following the cliffhanger ending from 2007’s Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

So is this the moment we have all waited for? Although there hasn’t been any official claims announced, the signs are stronger than they have ever been, regardless if it’s announced in 2025 or not. At least one thing is clear—the dream isn’t dead.

Tell us what you think. Whether you’re excited or completely exhausted from the wait, drop your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Ganduje explains why FCT is strategic to APC plans

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is too significant to be governed by opposition parties, emphasizing the need for the ruling party to consolidate its presence in Nigeria’s political seat of power.

Ganduje made the remarks in Abuja on Thursday while receiving a group of defectors from opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), led by the Chairperson of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Maikalangu.

The reception, held at the old parade ground in Garki, was part of a larger political event tagged the “Abuja Unity Rally,” organized to welcome new members into the APC fold.

Addressing the crowd, Ganduje said the wave of defections was a clear indication that residents of the FCT were increasingly aligning with the APC, particularly in the light of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visible efforts to include Abuja natives in governance.

“Abuja is not just any city. It is the nation’s capital — a symbol of unity and a hub of national governance,” Ganduje stated. “Leaving it in the hands of the opposition does not reflect the trust and direction the people want. With this mass defection, we are confident that the APC will continue to earn the support of the FCT electorate and secure a renewed mandate for President Tinubu come 2027.”

Currently, the FCT is represented in the Senate by Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party, while its two seats in the House of Representatives are split between LP’s Joshua Obika and APC’s Abdulrahman Ajiya.

Ganduje praised Tinubu’s inclusive leadership style, pointing to the president’s appointments of Abuja natives to key government positions as proof of his commitment to equity and national integration.

Minister of Special Duties, Zephaniah Jisalo — the first FCT indigene to be appointed a minister in Nigeria’s history — also addressed the gathering, commending Tinubu for fulfilling his campaign promise to uplift indigenous people of the capital.

The event drew a lineup of dignitaries including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, FCT Area Council Chairmen, councillors, and party stakeholders from across Nigeria.

  • Manchester United to step up pursuit of Tyler Dibling on one condition

Manchester United are looking to Southampton’s Tyler Dibling as they hope for a transformative summer with the transfer window on the horizon and Ruben Amorim in charge for his first set of pre-season tours.

The club are in desperate need of bouncing back after their worst Premier League campaign on record, set to finish in the bottom half of the table.

Looking ahead to the summer transfer market, United are lining up a lot of offers for their shortlist targets; however currently have limited funds to do so.

The club are experiencing significant financial struggles, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe claiming that were it not for his cash injection and cost-cutting measures, the club would be bust by Christmas 2025.

As such, The Red Devils are desperate to lift the Europa League trophy, not only for the prize funds, but also for entry into the Champions League next season.

Champions League football would bring in an extra £100 million of income to the club whilst also being the club’s final chance of securing European football for next season, a factor which significant interest in moving to Old Trafford is hinging on.

Manchester United’s pursuit of Tyler Dibling hinges on Europa League

Now ESPN has reported that United will only advance their interest in Southampton’s Tyler Dibling if they win the Europa League with the Saints wanting £100 million for their star.

The report also expresses that with Southampton set to be relegated and Dibling drawing interest from teams like Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, this is unlikely to be the final valuation.

However, it’s clear that to compete with the other interested parties, United will need a significant financial boost from winning the Europa League as well as the lure of European football.

United have already fallen down the pecking order for both Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens due to their uncertainty around European football next season.

However, if they can beat Athletic Club in the Semi-Final and go on to lift the trophy, they’ll once more be on a level playing field.

  • The Health Effects of Cousin Marriage in British Pakistanis

These are genes that exist at low frequency in the population and whose effects are only observed when you have two copies (recall that you inherit one copy of each gene from your mother and one from your father). They are usually non-functional versions of genes that have some important biological function, so their effects tend to be deleterious.

When two non-relatives mate, each transmits a certain number of rare recessives but, crucially, these are unlikely to be the same rare recessives (you might carry a non-functional version of gene X, while your spouse might carry a non-functional version of gene Y). Hence their children are unlikely to inherit two copies of the same deleterious gene.

Yet when two cousins mate, they are more likely to transmit the same rare recessives — since they could have each inherited a copy from their common grandparents (a non-functional version of gene X, say). It is therefore not so unlikely that their children inherit two copies of the same deleterious gene. And if their grandparents were also cousins (as might be the case in societies that have practised cousin marriage for several generations) the risk becomes even higher.

How much risk are we talking? A major UK study can shed some light on this question. The ‘Born in Bradford’ study, as it is known, has followed more than 13,000 pregnancies in the city of Bradford from 2007-2010. Approximately 18% involved parents who were first cousins, and an additional 10% involved parents with some other blood relation (usually second cousins), owing to the city’s large Pakistani population.

The latest report from the study was published last year. Its findings are shown below.

Children whose parents were first cousins were more likely to have died. They had higher rates of hospital usage, learning difficulties and speech and language difficulties. And they were less likely to have reached a “good stage of development” by the first year of school. On several of these measures, the difference amounts to a factor of 1.5-2.5, though on other measures it is lower.

Although the rate of cousin marriage among Pakistanis in Bradford has fallen over time, it remains high. report last year put the rate at 46%. Given the risks, why don’t more Pakistanis eschew cousin marriage?

One reason may be that they don’t understand the risks. In 2012, Nasreen Ali and her colleagues carried out interviews and focus groups with Pakistanis in Birmingham concerning the practice of cousin marriage. According to Professor Ali, a “majority of participants” attributed still-births and genetic conditions to factors like “the will of God” or “black magic”.

Although the rate of cousin marriage in Britain remains low, it is substantially elevated in Pakistanis — and this explains why they have higher rates of still-births and genetic conditions. While Conservative MP Richard Holden has called for cousin marriage to be banned, Labour has said it has “no plans” to do so. For the time being, raising scientific literacy may go some way to curbing the practice.

  • 2027: Buhari’s CPC Bloc Rejects Al-Makura Group’s Support For Tinubu Re-Election

One of the core groups in the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has rejected Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura’s group as representing the central group of the CPC founded by former president Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari had left the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2010 to register the CPC and contested the 2011 presidential election on its platform. He lost the election.

He joined forces with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), whose national leader was Bola Tinubu, and
Splinter groups from the ANPP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), called the New-PDP, were formed to defeat the incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, in 2015.

He successfully retained his position in 2019 before Tinubu emerged as the president in 2023.

The president has been accused by those claiming to be the main CPC bloc of alienating them The members of this group are said to include former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai; former ministers Isa Pantami (Communications), Dr Abubakar Malami (Justice) and others who are on the verge of joining el-Rufai in the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai has not hidden his feelings since he failed to emerge as Tinubu’s minister and has been leading a campaign against the president’s reelection as anti-Tinubu forces gather momentum across the North.

With the El-Rufai group’s campaign receiving more traction in the north, moves to counter them also began after they joined former vice president Atiku Abubakar during a Sallah visit to Buhari in Kaduna.

While there was no political statement issued during the visit, the All Progressives Congress, led by its National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, moved to counter it with a visit to the former president.

Ganduje pleaded with the former president to ensure his bloc does not pull away from the APC.

Buhari, however, told Ganduje and his team that people had the right to join any party of their choice. The statement reportedly did not go down well with the presidency, which allegedly recruited Al-Makura to lead an onslaught to discredit the el-Rufai group.

In a communique signed by Al-Makura, former Katsina governor, Bello Masari, ex-education minister, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, along with 20 others, they affirmed their support for President Tinubu and his policies and programmes.

The communique had read partly: ’We, the undersigned leaders and committed members of the former CPC, who were part of those instrumental in the historic merger that gave birth to the APC, hereby issue this statement to clarify our unalloyed loyalty to our great party and express firm solidarity with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

‘’Recent misleading narratives suggesting a defection or disaffection among CPC stakeholders are false, misleading and should be ignored. We remain integral to the APC and are fully aligned with its leadership.’’

But a senior member of the CPC who chatted with THE WHISTLER from France accused the Tinubu administration of being hijacked by the ACN and vowed that the main CPC bloc would pull away when the time is ripe.
The source, who did not want his name revealed, said
“ACN is now in charge, but when Buhari was the president, he accommodated everyone. In fact, the ACN was even more represented in his government.

“The Bloc would know what to do to have a say on who becomes Nigeria’s next president.

“What we know is that Al-Makura does not represent the central CPC bloc. We are the traditional and original bloc.

“Are you surprised that Buhari refused to listen to them? He told them we have the right to choose our political associations. That’s simple.

He added that “it doesn’t matter where the next president comes from but who would accommodate all, whether he’s a northerner or southerner”, pointing out that the main “CPC controls five out of seven states in the North East, five of six in the North West and four in the North Central” of the group that makes up the APC.

He warned, “With that, anybody who toys with us will fail.”

Also, Malami dismissed claims by Al-Makura’s group as the main bloc in a statement issued by his media aide, Muhammad Bello Doka.

He said, “When you say CPC bloc, one needs to know who they are referring to. Is it the likes of Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Adamu Adamu, Masari and Faruku Adamu Aliyu who, a few months ago, had been throwing Buhari under the bus in desperate attempts to gain relevance that should decide for the bloc? Malami queried.

He described their decision as personal, with no connection with the CPC bloc, adding that it was for them to gain relevance in the APC for personal benefits.

On his rumoured defection to the Social Democracy Party (SDP), Malami dismissed it as figments of the imagination of those peddling the rumour.

“Malami is a prominent figure in Nigeria; therefore, he cannot defect to any party in secret. He is still in APC but in broad consultations with different platforms. Until the consultations are over, it is premature to talk about defection or declaration of interest.”

He, however, said he remained in active politics and would make his position known when the time was ripe to do so.

‘’Malami has the right to belong to any political party and to contest any position in Kebbi State,’’ the aide said.
