  • Law firms, universities and civil society groups are in Trump’s sights

By LISA MASCARO, Associated Press Congressional Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) — First the nation’s top law firms. Then its premier universities. Now, President Donald Trump is leaning on the advocacy groups that underpin U.S. civil society.

Trump said Thursday that the administration is looking at the tax-exempt status not just of Harvard, but environmental groups and specifically the ethics watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW. It could be a devastating financial blow to the nonprofit organizations — and his perceived political foes.

The president’s remarks, during an event at the White House, began to confirm what advocacy groups have been quietly warning: Trump’s campaign of retribution is coming next for them.

“It’s supposed to be a charitable organization,” Trump said about CREW, in particular. “The only charity they had is going after Donald Trump. So we’re looking at that. We’re looking at a lot of things.”

Trump and his team have been working their way through the nation’s institutions, threatening to chisel away at the independence and autonomy of the law firms, college campuses and now advocacy groups — or putting them at risk of losing their federal funds or professional livelihood.

It’s all coming quickly, not yet 100 days into the new administration, and in ways historically unheard of in this country for their speed and scope. And it’s sending shock waves reverberating throughout the American system.

“It’s a sad day in this country when organizations that provide critical services to their communities are under attack from their government,” said Cole Leiter, executive director of the advocacy group Americans Against Government Censorship. “No administration, Republican or Democratic, should be able to weaponize the weight of the government against their political enemies.”

    The list of organizations grows

On their own, Trump’s actions are an almost daily list of executive pronouncements from the White House. The Trump administration has issued orders against the law firms that had cases or attorneys perceived to be against him, and it has made demands of the universities over their rules around campus activism.

Thursday brought potentially more to the stack: Trump singled out CREW, the watchdog group whose founder, Norm Eisen, played a pivotal role in Trump’s first impeachment, and the environmental groups that largely stand at odds with his “drill baby drill” agenda.

“Tax exempt status — I mean, it’s a privilege. It’s really a privilege, and it’s been abused by a lot more than Harvard,” Trump said. “We’ll be making some statements. It’s a big deal.”

But taken together, the executive orders and actions and memos are making one thing clear: The Trump administration is eager to test new ways to flex executive power, and dare the courts and Congress to intervene. And there’s more expected to come.

Environmental, immigration and civil society advocacy groups have been bracing for potential threats to their tax-exempt status, according to a person familiar with the situation and granted anonymity to discuss it. The person said some expect Trump might start taking action against the environmental groups on Earth Day, which is Tuesday.

These are the largely nonprofit organizations and groups, many based in Washington, advocating for various communities, constituencies and causes.

Kieran Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity, said environmental groups have heard that the Trump administration is preparing executive orders targeting the tax status of environmental groups that work on climate change, as well as that of any foundations that fund their work.

“Trump is marshaling all the power of government to punish his perceived enemies,” Suckling said. “We’ve got a crack legal team and will have him in court within 24 hours. We’re ready and waiting for him to come at us.”

CREW has examined Trump’s affairs for years

CREW has been a leading ethics group in Washington, with Trump long the subject of its probes.

Ahead of the 2024 election, the group was part of the legal effort to disqualify Trump from regaining the White House under the 14th Amendment, in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol. More recently, CREW sued over the firing of federal workers by Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency.

“For more than 20 years, CREW has exposed government corruption from politicians of both parties who violate the public trust and has worked to promote an ethical, transparent government,” said Jordan Libowitz, the organization’s vice president.

Trump’s attacks on civil society have created a climate that is potentially chilling for the organizations in question — but they have had mixed results.

Five of the major law firms and Trump reached a deal in which they agreed to provide a combined hundreds of millions of dollars in pro bono counsel to causes the administration says it supports. The firms are trying to avoid various sanctions, including terminated federal contracts, federal employment investigations over diversity hiring and others.

While Columbia University agreed to the Trump administration’s demands to overhaul its rules for public protests rather than risk billions of dollars in lost federal funds, Harvard rebuffed the administration and now faces a $2 billion federal funding freeze and the threat to its tax-exempt status.

The tax-exempt status allows nonprofit organizations to receive donations that are crucial to their financial bottom line. Changing that could, in some situations, lead to calamity.

“Good governance groups are the heart of a healthy democracy,” Libowitz said. “We will continue to do our work to ensure Americans have an ethical and accountable government.”

  • UOC’s Metropolitan Luke condemns LGBT film festival opening on Holy Friday

Zaporozhye, Zaporozhye Province, Ukraine, April 17, 2025

Photo: Telegram His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye, one of the most outspoken hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, has condemned the LGBT film festival that will open in Kiev on Holy Friday and called upon other religious leaders to raise their voices.

The Sunny Bunny LGBT Film Festival will be held on Holy Friday, Holy Saturday, Holy Pascha, and throughout Bright Week. According to the organizers, the goal of the festival is to “become a significant representative of the Ukrainian and international LGBT community, play a significant role in political and social representation and catalyze changes towards equality in Ukrainian society,” reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.

But holy days must not be mocked, Met. Luke writes in his relevant Telegram post.

Our faith calls us to love everyone, he writes, but “love cannot be indifference. True love speaks the truth—with compassion, but also with courage. God loves man but hates sin, so the idea that ‘God loves everyone,’ is inappropriate in such cases.”

    He continues:

Holy Friday is the day when the entire Christian world remembers the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross for the salvation of people from sin. Pascha is a celebration of victory over death, a celebration of light, purity and life. Using these days to promote an ideology that contradicts Christian morality is deeply disrespectful not only to believers, but also to the very spiritual essence of the human person.

“This festival isn’t even a malicious joke—it’s an outright outrage,” His Eminence writes.

Given that this outrage is happening on such holy days, it is only natural to ask where is the voice of Ukraine’s spiritual leaders, Met. Luke laments. Given how important religiosity has always been in Ukraine, the silence from spiritual leaders is deafening, he writes.

“We hear statements on political topics, about the social structure, and others—and this is necessary. But where is the word about moral corruption, which is presented under the guise of ‘art?’ Where is the protection of sacred symbols, where is the guidance to the flock, where is the fatherly voice that can stop madness?”

Unfortunately, he writes, the answer is obvious—these spiritual leaders are “busy supporting legislative initiatives aimed at the legal ‘murder’ of my Mother Church, the UOC, tacit consent to the violent seizure of its churches, the beating of the faithful children of the UOC who defend their churches, and the vociferous declaration of the persecution of the UOC as ‘incredible religious freedom.’”

    The Metropolitan concludes:

Why is there no joint voice of Orthodox, Catholics, Greek Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Protestants—the voice of reason, faith and conscience? Why is faith silent when unbelief screams?

  • Police nab suspected land grabbers with guns and charms in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspected land grabbers who allegedly made an attempt to attack homeowners at Wood Island Estate in the Ishawo area of Ikorodu in Lagos State.

About 100 houses were demolished after the suspected land grabbers invaded the estate last year, Punch reports.

The thugs allegedly made another attempt on Thursday, April 17, but they faced resistance from property owners in the estate.

A police source told the publication that this led to their arrest, with arms recovered.

“Angry house owners and other people have mobilised themselves to prevent another takeover of the area by land speculators, who demolished more than 100 houses.

“One of them identified as Rasak Segun was arrested with a white pistol while trying to escape through a neighbouring estate by vigilante members. He was taken to Owutu Police Station,” the source narrated.

The police source further disclosed that the suspect confessed to members of the Isawo community that he was mobilised from Ajah.

Another person was also said to have been arrested in the community with three pump-action guns, which were concealed in a Toyota Corolla car.

“The driver and some other people were in the car. Sensing danger, the other occupants fled the scene, but the driver was arrested and handed over to the police.

“The vehicle was thoroughly searched and three guns and assorted charms were recovered,” the source added.

The command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the suspected land grabbers to newsmen on Thursday.

He said, “On Friday, April 11, at about 7:25 pm, a complainant of Owutu area of Ikorodu reported at Owutu Division in the company of a vigilante member reported that one Segun was sighted moving suspiciously.

“When he was questioned, he could not give a satisfactory account of himself. However, he was searched and one pistol with two rounds of live ammunition and one phone was found in his bag.”

He added that the investigation was ongoing.

  • How to Get Wool Thread in RuneScape DragonWilds

After you are equipped with power level 2 gear in RuneScape Dragonwilds, you need to start crafting the next tier gear to prepare for Fractured Plains. Wool Thread is one of the main items for crafting power level 3 gear, but sadly, it can only be crafted from materials found in Fractured Plains itself. The wool thread will also be useful in building the Loom and Padded Cloth. Want to get your hands on some? To help you out, here we have made a complete guide on how to make wool thread in RuneScape DragonWilds.

How to Get Wool Thread in RuneScape DragonWilds

Wool is an essential item for crafting mid-to-end-game gear, like power level 3 armor and weapons, or Wool cloths. The item can be crafted using a Spinning Wheel and requires Fleece or Soft Animal Fur as processing material. Here is a complete step-by-step guide on how to get Wool Thread in RuneScape DragonWilds.

    1. Build a Spinning Wheel

The first thing you need to do to make wool thread is build a Spinning Wheel. The Spinning Wheel is also used to craft Coarse Threads, which are an early game item for crafting gear. Here are the materials you need to build a Spinning Wheel in RuneScape DragonWilds:

    • 12 Ash Logs
    • 4 Flax
    • 2 Stones
Image Credit: Jagex (screenshot by Sanmay Chakrabarti/Beebom)

You can get cut Ash Logs from Ash trees, mine Stones from Stone Boulders, and collect Flax in the Bramblemead Valley. After you have obtained the items, open the Build menu and select Spinning Wheel from the Crafting tab. Build the Spinning Wheel inside a shelter and move to the next section.

    2. Get Fleece and Soft Animal Fur

After building a spinning wheel, you will need to gather the materials to craft wool thread. Two materials can be processed to get wool thread, which are:

    • Soft Animal Fur: drops from Wolf
    • Fleece: drops from Sheep

Both items can be obtained in Fractured Plains, which can be found North of Whispering Swamp. One thing to note is that the Wolves are particularly strong in Fractured Ruins, so make sure to be properly geared for fighting them.

The Sheep, on the other hand, are docile and don’t fight back. However, they can still run away when attacked. Once you’ve gathered both materials, keep reading.

    3. Craft Wool Thread

After you have obtained Soft Animal Fur or Fleece, you can process them in the Spinning Wheel to craft Wool Threads. Here are the material processing ratios for Wool Threads:

    • 1 Fleece: 1 Wool Thread
    • 3 Soft Animal Fur: 1 Wool Thread

As you get more wool threads from fleece, it is much better to farm sheep over wolves. So, that’s how you can obtain Wool Thread in RuneScape DragonWilds. If you have any further questions, ask us in the comments section below.

  • Police in Ondo clarifies report Remi Tinubu’s convoy killed 7-yr-old in Akure

The Ondo State Police Command has refuted reports suggesting that a vehicle from the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was responsible for the tragic death of a young girl in Akure on Thursday.

The First Lady was in the state capital for the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, during which she distributed 10,000 professional kits, including Crocs and scrubs, to midwives across the South-West zone.

An online publication had alleged that a car from her convoy struck and killed a nine-year-old girl in the Oba-Ile area of Akure.

However, in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the command described the report as “false and misleading.”

“Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations conducted by the Command confirm that the incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle—not by any vehicle associated with the First Lady’s convoy,” the statement said.

Odunlami-Omisanya further explained that a witness, who was at the scene, immediately pursued the fleeing vehicle on a motorcycle. Multiple bystanders and the victim’s own parents corroborated this account, affirming that the First Lady’s convoy was not involved.

The police also corrected misinformation in the initial report regarding the victim’s age. Contrary to claims that the girl was nine years old, her parents confirmed she was seven.

“This inaccuracy further underscores the publication’s lack of respect for truth, especially in such a sensitive matter,” the spokesperson added.

In a show of empathy, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police personally visited the bereaved family, offering condolences and promising a thorough and transparent investigation to bring the culprit to justice.

“At no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in this tragedy,” Odunlami-Omisanya reaffirmed, calling on media outlets to exercise responsibility and verify facts before disseminating information that could inflame public sentiment or tarnish reputations.

  • Seattle Woman Detained After Gas Station Assault

Seattle police apprehended a 33-year-old woman on Thursday evening following an incident at a West Seattle gas station where she allegedly stole hot coffee and assaulted an employee. The confrontation occurred at a gas station located in the 5400 block of Delridge Way Southwest around 9:17 p.m. on April 10.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a 45-year-old clerk who was soaked in coffee and visibly distressed, exhibiting signs of severe pain with a bright red face, neck, and chest.

Gas station workers often encounter various situations, ranging from routine transactions to confrontational encounters. In this case, the employee’s attempt to resolve the situation by asking the woman to pay for her coffee resulted in a violent response. Such incidents can have lasting effects on employees, impacting their sense of security and well-being in their workplace.

According to the gas station employee, the woman had been in the store for approximately 15 minutes without making a purchase. He reported that she filled two cups with hot coffee from the coffee station but left with one cup without paying, abandoning the second cup at the counter.

When the clerk followed her outside, asking her to pay for the coffee, she responded by hurling the hot beverage at him, hitting his face and upper chest. Following the attack, the woman fled across the street and entered an apartment building in the same block.

The claim of self-defense raises legal questions that will likely be examined in court, as the circumstances surrounding her actions will be scrutinized. Seattle police located and detained her shortly thereafter. During questioning, the woman claimed she threw the coffee in self-defense.

She was subsequently booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of robbery. Meanwhile, medics from the Seattle Fire Department arrived to provide medical assistance to the gas station employee, who ultimately declined to be transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Manchester United’s recruitment strategy has shifted focus towards securing young, high-potential talents as part of their long-term rebuild.

Names like Diego Leon, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi all reflect the tactical direction United have adopted in the transfer market.

Now, another name sits firmly on the club’s radar.

River Plate’s exciting attacking midfielder Franco Mastantuono.

United are keen to trigger the teenager’s release clause, as previously reported on CentreDevils.

The Red Devils are believed to be monitoring the situation closely.

Chelsea to battle with Red Devils for Franco Mastantuono

However, competition for Mastantuono’s signature is intensifying, with Chelsea now firmly in the race.

According to journalist Gustavo Yarroch on his YouTube channel, Chelsea are well-placed and see Mastantuono as part of their long-term strategy to secure creative midfield talent early.

Even if it means meeting his €45 million release clause, which they are prepared to do.

Barcelona have also been tracking the River Plate starlet, while Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool all remain interested.

Although Barcelona’s financial situation could leave them at a disadvantage.

Atletico recently sent scouts to Argentina to assess the 17-year-old’s progress.

Mastantuono signed his first professional contract with River Plate in August 2023.

It included a €40 million release clause that climbs by €5 million during the final 10 days of any transfer window.

The Blues are prepared to reach that figure in order to stay ahead of rivals, including Manchester United.

He has previously spoke on his focus on improving at his current club, despite the volume of interest.

It could shape up to be one of the more fiercely contested youth transfer races of the summer.

  • ‘Giant fireball’ forces plane to land after ‘possible wildlife strike’

A United Airlines airplane flying from Denver, Colorado, to Edmonton, Canada, on Sunday appeared to experience a major engine fire due to a “possible wildlife strike,” which forced the airplane to return to the Denver International Airport.

In a statement obtained by The New York Post, United Airlines said, “Our flight from Denver to Edmonton (UA2325) returned safely to Denver to address a possible wildlife strike.” United Airlines confirmed to Fox Business that the airplane involved in Sunday’s incident was a Boeing 737-800.

According to Fox Business, none of the 153 passengers and six crew members aboard the Boeing 737-800 were injured in Sunday’s incident. The outlet noted that the airline later arranged for a different aircraft to transport the passengers to Edmonton following the airplane’s safe return to the airport.

In a video shared by ABC News, the Boeing 737-800’s flight crew can be heard requesting that the aircraft be inspected for an engine fire, while the pilot claimed that the “possible wildlife strike” was caused by a rabbit. The pilot can be heard saying, “Rabbit through the number 2 [engine], that’ll do it.”

Describing what happened on the United Airlines flight, passenger Scott Wolff told ABC’s “Good Morning America,” “There was a loud bang, and a significant vibration in the plane.”

“Every few moments there was a backfire coming from the engine, a giant fireball behind it,” Wolff added. “Everyone in the plane then started to panic.”

Wyatt McCurry, who witnessed the engine fire from the ground at the Denver International Airport, told “Good Morning America,” “My stomach dropped and I just thought, ‘I’m going to see a plane go down.’”

The video of Sunday’s airplane incident shows bright flashes of light repeatedly coming from the engine due to the engine fire caused by the “possible wildlife strike.” The flashes of light were seen from the ground at the Denver International Airport.

Another video shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows the flashes of light from the perspective of the passengers on the United Airlines airplane. Multiple passengers can be heard panicking in the video, while other passengers can be heard repeatedly shouting, “Fire!”
