NGOs Received Billions From EU Commission to Lobby for Leftist Causes

Thousands of NGOs were funded with taxpayer cash to promote so-called EU values and advance left-wing causes ~Germany’s Focus magazine

    BREITBART

Corruption concerns have been raised amid an investigation into the billions handed out from the EU to NGOs, allegedly in exchange for lobbying efforts on behalf of the European Commission to advance left-wing causes such as the green agenda.

The European Court of Auditors has found that between 2021 and 2023, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) received a total of €7.4 ($8.4) billion from the EU, including 4.8 billion euros from the governing Commission and another 2.6 billion euros from member states.

Thousands of NGOs were funded with taxpayer cash to promote so-called EU values and advance left-wing causes on immigration, environmentalism, and even lobbying for the ban on combustion engine cars, Germany’s Focus magazine reported.

The Court of Auditors report, which found that there was “no reliable overview of EU funding granted to NGOs”,  raised concerns that some such organisations were disguising themselves as NGOs to lobby politicians on behalf of their own economic interests while claiming to be non-profits or by government actors using the groups to advance their own ends clandestinely.

An unnamed research facility in the textile and cosmetics industry, which claimed to be an NGO to receive EU funding, was identified by the Court of Auditors as having pursued the “business interests of its predominantly for-profit members” while maintaining a non-profit status.

The watchdog report found: “Across EU countries, the definition of what an NGO is varies, and is rarely enshrined in national legislation. In 2024, the EU essentially defined an NGO as being independent from government and a non-profit organisation. While this is a step in the right direction, the definition alone cannot ensure that NGOs are correctly classified in the EU’s financial transparency system.

“This is because entities self-declare as NGOs, and the Commission does not check important aspects of their status, including whether a government exerts significant influence over their governing bodies or whether an NGO pursues its members’ commercial interests.”

The investigation was launched following the Qatargate scandal, which broke in 2022. Mostly leftist European Parliament representatives and officials have been accused of accepting bribes and other perks from the Islamic kingdom of Qatar as well as from Morocco and Mauritania to promote their agendas within the EU. It has been claimed that some of the payments allegedly given to Eurocrats were funnelled through NGOs.

  • Man who escaped custody sentenced for killing woman while she was housesitting for relatives

LAPEER, Mich. (TCN) — A man who escaped from custody while being transported from Montana to Michigan will spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing a woman at her relatives’ home.

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office announced that a judge sentenced 44-year-old Chadwick Mobley on April 15 to life in prison without the possibility of parole in connection with the death of Andrea Eilber. Mobley previously pleaded no contest in February to first-degree murder, felony murder, and felony firearm.

According to prosecutors, in 2011, Mobley shot Eilber in the head. WJRT-TV reports that the victim was housesitting for her aunt and uncle at the time. Eilber’s boyfriend, Kenneth Grondin, was reportedly convicted of first-degree murder, but the case was reopened in 2022. With the help of advanced DNA testing, prosecutors said investigators linked Mobley to the crime.

The court of appeals reportedly overturned Grondin’s conviction due to a form error, and he is awaiting a new trial. Mobley allegedly has no connection to Grondin.

According to the attorney general’s office, Mobley, who was living in Utah, fled his home after Michigan State Police questioned him. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department later arrested him in Montana.

The Sanders County Sheriff’s Office said that on July 9, 2023, while officials transported Mobley from Montana to Michigan, he escaped his handcuffs and ankle shackles when they stopped at a Plains Town Pump gas station. The Sanders County Sheriff’s Office told residents in the area to lock their doors and cars and to be on the lookout for Mobley. The Sanders County Sheriff’s Office and Plains Police later located and apprehended him.

At the defendant’s sentencing, Eilber’s aunt reportedly said, “At least this plea will hopefully get you out of society so you can never hurt anyone else’s loved one.”

According to WJRT, Mobley apologized and said he had “no words that could bring them solace.”

In a statement, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said, “My thoughts remain with Andrea’s family, friends, and community. I hope this outcome brings some measure of solace and healing to those who loved her.”

  • Judicial Watch: FBI Releases Nashville Shooter Manifesto

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that it received 112 pages of documents that make up the “manifesto” of the March 27, 2023, shooter at The Covenant School in Tennessee. The records were an interim release in response to a Judicial Watch FOIA lawsuit (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Justice (No. 1:23-cv-01483)).

The records detail the shooter’s violent thoughts, the targeting and planning of the shooting attack on the Covenant School, and transgender-related distress. The records show she considered an attack on a mall but did not pursue it because of the facility’s security measures.

“The Covenant School killer’s ‘manifesto’ records are exceedingly disturbing but should have been released long ago. We appreciate the Trump administration’s transparency. These records may help Americans understand and perhaps better prevent and protect their schools and other targets from mass shooters,” stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

Separately, Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit on behalf of retired Hamilton County Sheriff James Hammond and the Tennessee Firearms Association, Inc. (“TFA”) (Hammond et al. v. Metropolitan Govt of Nashville et al. (No. 23-0538-III)). The lawsuit is on appeal after a lower court upheld efforts to keep all the records secret.

  • American citizen killed by passenger while trying to hijack plane in Belize

An American citizen was shot and killed by a passenger Thursday during his attempt to hijack a plane in Belize.

The incident occurred aboard a Tropic Air Belize flight with 13 other passengers onboard when Akinyela Sawa Taylor tried to take over the aircraft at knifepoint after it took off from Corozal toward Belize City.

He demanded more fuel for the plane and to be taken out of the country, according to police. Taylor had previously been refused entry to Belize and it remains under investigation how he boarded the plane.

As the flight circled while depleting fuel, a Belizean passenger carrying a licensed gun shot Taylor in the chest, local police said, according to ABC News. That person remains in critical condition after being stabbed in the back and lungs.

Two others also suffered knife wounds in the chaos, though their current conditions are unclear.

The plane landed safely nearly two hours later at an airport just outside Belize City, and was moments from running out of fuel, officials said.

“Earlier today, a Tropic Air flight faced a serious and unprecedented in-flight emergency,” Tropic Air CEO Maximillian Greif said in a statement. “In the face of incomprehensible pressure, our pilot acted with extraordinary courage and calm, guiding the aircraft to a safe landing. His actions were nothing short of heroic.”

Belize Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told local journalists the plane was followed by a helicopter in case a quick rescue operation needed to be mounted in the event of a crash.

The U.S. Embassy in Belize said it was working with local officials in their investigation.

  • I Have Backing Of Chelsea Owners Despite Poor Form- Maresca

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has revealed that he enjoys the backing of the Chelsea owners despite the team’s poor run of form.

The Blues suffered an embarrassing 2-1 loss at home to Lega Warsaw on Thursday in the second leg of their Europa Conference League quarter-final clash.

They have now failed to win their last two matches at home including the 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town last weekend in the Premier League.

Due to their poor run of form, Chelsea have slipped out of the Champions League places on the Premier League log.

The club’s supporters expressed their disappointment by booing the players at the end of the defeat against Lega Warsaw.

However, Maresca has confirmed that he has the backing of the owners despite the fans’ frustrations.

The Chelsea owners have sacked three coaches in less than three years since they took charge of the club.

“Absolutely yes, no doubt,” Maresca responded when he was asked whether he had the backing of the owners.

He continued: “We have spent almost all season in a Champions League spot. We are in a European semifinal. So why now we need to change something? I don’t have any doubt about what we are doing and the way we are doing.

“For different reasons, we had setbacks like (against Legia), but for me, this makes us stronger for the future.”

The Italian manager also urged the players to see their last six games of the season as vital in order to achieve their objectives at the end of the season.

Maresca said, “At this moment [of the season], there is no bad time to play,’ the Blues head coach said. ‘There is only the right time to play a game.

“We have six Premier League games plus the two semi-final matches, so we have eight official games to play at the moment and they are all important. Now is the moment to go, if we want to reach something.

“Chelsea is a big club, a huge club, one of the biggest clubs in the world. So it’s normal that you have pressure. When you decide to sign for Chelsea, you have to think you are under pressure because it’s Chelsea. It’s the same for the manager, no doubt.

“So if we have a game away and there is worry [about that], we are in the wrong way.”

Chelsea have won two out of their last six matches in all competitions.

Maresca’s team will be back in Premier League action against Fulham on Sunday. A win will boost their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Man pleads guilty for role in Gantt robbery

    Published 12:53 pm Friday, April 18, 2025

Lorenzo Armon Whatley, 24, of Troy, pled guilty this week for his part in what law enforcement has come to call the “Gantt 9 Robbery,”  based on the number of people arrested for the crime. Whatley and eight others forced their way into Felix Jones’s home in Gantt in an attempt to rob him.

“All of the defendants went to prison except for one,” said District Attorney Walt Merrell. “A female present at the scene did not take part in the crime and instead sat in the car. Everyone else, including Whatley, forced their way into Jones’s residence to assist with the robbery.  Whatley and a few others were armed with pistols.”

For his part in the robbery, Whatley was sentenced to 15 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections.

“So far, each defendant has been sentenced to a term consistent with the extent of their involvement in the crime,” Merrell said. “Whatley has no prior felonies, but a crime of this serious nature doesn’t allow much room for leniency. Someone could have been killed that night.  We are fortunate this is not a murder case.”

Merrell expressed his appreciation for the “hard work of Covington County Sheriff’s Office and the Gantt Police Department, as well as the help of the Andalusia Police Department. They all worked together for the common good and did a great job.”

Merrell said he expects the case against the last defendant, Ramone Smith of Andalusia, to be tried later this year.

  • VP Vance attends Vatican Good Friday service with his family

U.S. Vice President JD Vance and his family attended the Vatican’s Liturgy for the Lord’s Passion in St. Peter’s Basilica on Good Friday during the first day of an April 18–20 visit to Rome.

On his trip, Vance — who is a convert to Catholicism — will also be visiting cultural and religious sites and meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state. He met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday after landing in Rome.

“Vice President Vance looks forward to meeting with Prime Minister Meloni and Church officials while in Italy and is grateful for the opportunity to visit some of Rome’s amazing cultural and religious sites with his family during Holy Week,” the vice president’s press secretary, Taylor Van Kirk, told CNA earlier on Friday.

There is no formal meeting scheduled between the vice president and Pope Francis, who, despite still recovering from double pneumonia, has resumed some informal public appearances — including a short visit to Rome’s Regina Coeli prison on Holy Thursday.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who left the hospital on March 23 after 38 days, also had a brief private encounter with King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their state visit to Italy on April 9.

Vance posted on X shortly before the liturgy on Friday that he “had a great meeting” with Meloni and was “headed to church soon with my family in this beautiful city.”

“I’m grateful every day for this job, but particularly today where my official duties have brought me to Rome on Good Friday,” he wrote. “I wish all Christians all over the world, but particularly those back home in the U.S., a blessed Good Friday.”

The Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion in St. Peter’s Basilica on April 18 was celebrated by Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, prefect of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches, who was delegated to lead the service in the pope’s place. Following Vatican custom, the preacher of the papal household, Father Roberto Pasolini, OFM Cap, delivered the homily.

Preaching on the “intelligence of the Cross,” Pasolini pointed out that “in a time when artificial and predictive intelligence dominates our thinking, the Cross offers a radically different form of wisdom—one that doesn’t calculate or compete but simply loves and gives.

“This intelligence is not artificial but deeply personal and open to God. In a world shaped by algorithms, the Cross restores authentic freedom—the freedom to love, even when it costs everything.”

In letting himself be nailed to a cross, Christ’s sacrifice was “not a passive surrender, but an act of supreme freedom, accepting weakness as the place where love can become full,” Pasolini said.

“It is not autonomy or great feats that give meaning to life, but the ability to transform limitations into an opportunity for giving. With this gesture, Jesus reveals to us that it is not strength that saves the world, but the weakness of love that holds nothing back and surrenders itself,” he said.

The vice president’s trip comes as the Vatican and President Donald Trump’s administration have traded back-and-forths over plans to deport large numbers of immigrants who entered the country illegally.

The administration has received praise from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for its efforts to curtail gender ideology and government mandates that jeopardize religious freedom. However, the bishops have also sued the administration over its decision to cut funding for nongovernmental organizations that provide services to migrants, which has affected numerous Catholic organizations.

Vance’s meeting with Meloni comes as the Trump administration continues to negotiate trade policies and tariffs with countries around the world, including countries in the European Union. Meloni also met Trump at the White House on April 17.

Angelus Staff also contributed to this report.
