Kidnappers suspected to be herdsmen have abducted an Ezenwanyi (priestess) and three worshippers at a river in Obehe Orba in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, an Enugu media personality, who confirmed the incident said the gunmen also abducted four local farmers in the same community.

According to him, the incident happened on Wednesday night, April 16, 2025.

The first 4 persons were kidnapped at Ohebe river together with Ezenwanyi, who took them there to perform or do their usual water and #Fanta work and Fulani herdsmen kidnapped all of them before the water goddess. The other 4 persons went for their cashew business inside their cashew farms and they were also kidnapped,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, the kidnappers contacted the families of the victims and demanded a ransom of N50 million but later reduced it to N15million.

  • 3 NDLEA officers shot during Abuja raid

Three officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have been hospitalised with gunshot wounds following an attack by hoodlums during a raid in Abuja.

The NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said in statement on Friday the officers were attacked at the Jahi area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

He added that the incident occurred during a raid on an uncompleted building at the NNPC area of Jahi, following intelligence and surveillance reports.

Items recovered in the operation include 74 bottles of codeine, 10 litres of codeine syrup, 48 grammes of tramadol 225mg, 4.9 kilogrammes of skunk, and five Android phones.

The spokesman noted that as the team exited the location, they came under gunfire.

Babafemi said: “Three officers sustained gunshot injuries—one in the rib, and two others in the back and leg.

“They were first stabilised at the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1, before being moved to the National Hospital, Abuja, for further treatment.

“The NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retd), expressed gratitude to the Police Clinic staff for their swift response.

“He also thanked the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital for personally overseeing the officers’ treatment after being contacted.”

  • United Way Opposes Plan to Eliminate IRS Direct File

Gordon McHenry, Jr., president and CEO of United Way of King County.

    By The Seattle Medium

United Way of King County and United Ways of the Pacific Northwest are voicing strong opposition to reported White House plans to eliminate the IRS Direct File program—a free electronic tax filing system that has helped thousands of Washingtonians and others nationwide file their taxes easily and affordably.

Though United Way of King County will continue its Free Tax Preparation campaign, local leaders are warning that ending Direct File will significantly limit access to tax filing options, especially for lower-income residents.

“We are alarmed that the U.S. government would even suggest this as an idea,” said Gordon McHenry, Jr., president and CEO of United Way of King County. “Direct File is a tool that allows people to file their taxes as easily and efficiently as possible on their own. Filing taxes is stressful and challenging for many folks. Direct File helps to make filing taxes less stressful. This is not only a bad idea but will cause harm.”

Launched by the IRS as a pilot program, Direct File was developed to simplify tax filing and provide an alternative to for-profit tax preparation services. Its proposed elimination has sparked criticism from advocates concerned about accessibility and economic equity.

“This unfortunate decision will bring back tax preparation deserts across the region,” said Jim Cooper, president and CEO of United Ways of the Pacific Northwest, a regional network supporting 30 local United Way organizations in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. “We have worked so hard to bring tax prep services to the table for everyone, and this is a huge setback that will reduce the wealth of families who qualify for credits and cannot file. I know we can do better as a country; our communities rely on strong partnerships with the federal government to succeed, but this is the opposite.”

United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation program offers both in-person and virtual assistance. Most in-person tax sites will close on April 19, but two locations—Seattle Library Main Branch and Southcenter Mall in Tukwila—will reopen on May 8 and operate through the end of July. Virtual support will continue through myfreetaxeswa.org, a platform offering access to other free tax prep locations across Washington.

“Long-term, this is a reduction of opportunities for everyone who needs and can benefit from filing their taxes,” said Ryan McFerran, Program Manager for Tax Credits & Financial Stability at United Way of King County. “So, there is an immediate impact because people will have fewer options to file their taxes right away. That means it is even more imperative to keep some of our tax sites open through the end of July.”

Though the White House’s reported move to dismantle Direct File came after the April 15 tax deadline, McFerran emphasized that the decision still affects many who have yet to file or who need options in future years.

  • US House Committee Urges BofA & JPM To Abandon Chinese Firm’s IPO Deal

US House Committee Urges BofA & JPM To Abandon Chinese Firm’s IPO Deal

“If JPMorgan and Bank of America proceed with this IPO, they risk complicity in underwriting genocide, undermining American industry, and endangering U.S. service members,”

    mobile-logo

Chairman John Moolenaar of the House Select Committee on China urged JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan to withdraw from the Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology’s (CATL) initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong, citing “serious national security threats and due diligence failures.”

“If JPMorgan and Bank of America proceed with this IPO, they risk complicity in underwriting genocide, undermining American industry, and endangering U.S. service members,” Moolenaar stated in a press release, referring to the letter he sent the heads of JPM and BofA.

He continued: “The letters outline serious national security threats and due diligence failures. The company’s reported aggressive pursuit of the CATL deal, despite its low fee structure and their defense ties, adds to concerns over risk and regulatory oversight,” adding, “As Chairman, I am closely monitoring how major financial institutions engage with companies linked to the Chinese Communist Party. The House Select Committee on China is actively examining these relationships, and we urge JPMorgan and Bank of America to prioritize national security and human rights in their decision-making.”

Moolenaar emphasized that CATL was designated as a “Chinese military company” under Section 1260H of the National Defense Authorization Act earlier this year.

    .

JPM and BofA’s potential participation in the HK IPO “directly aids the Chinese Communist Party’s military buildup and ongoing human rights abuses,” the chairman of the House Select Committee on China warned.

Moolenaar noted that CATL has ties “to the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC)—a sanctioned paramilitary entity involved in the genocide of Uyghur Muslims—and its role in modernizing China’s submarine fleet with advanced lithium-ion batteries.”

According to public trade data compiled by counterparty and supply chain risk intelligence firm Sayari, CATL is 1 to 3 hops away from entities with “high” to “elevated” forced labor concerns

Public data shows that Tesla is a major buyer of lithium-ion batteries from the Chinese entity.

Well ahead of the incoming US crackdown on CATL, we asked back in August 2024: “Is Tesla At Risk From Marco Rubio’s Push to ‘Blacklist’ Chinese Battery Firm CATL?”

Followed by this note at the beginning of the year.

Just a warning to investors: some in the Trump administration are very serious about the “nuclear option” on delisting Chinese stocks.

  • Coach accused of luring teen to locker room for community service hours and making sexual comments

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (TCN) — A high school football coach faces charges after allegedly making inappropriate sexual comments to teens, including to one victim he lured into a locker room under the guise of community service.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, on April 2, a parent reported “inappropriate conversations” Tyler Eden reportedly had with their daughter when she met with Eden for community service hours. Upon further investigation, detectives learned Eden allegedly asked a 16-year-old student to help him sort football helmets in the locker room.

Authorities allege Eden talked to the student about a “teacher who wanted to have sex with him in the locker room,” and the victim said she “didn’t want to talk about that.” According to the sheriff’s office, the victim told officials Eden continued the conversation anyway and said he was married but “still wanted to engage in sexual activity with the teacher.”

The student reportedly helped perform community service tasks again the following day. Authorities allege that while she was breaking down boxes, the zipper on her hoodie broke, but all she had on was a bra underneath. The student reportedly asked Eden for a T-shirt to cover up. Eden allegedly reached out and completely unzipped her jacket, and the student said she felt uncomfortable.

Eden tried to help fix the zipper and eventually gave the victim a shirt, so she went into a different locker area to change. Sheriff Grady Judd alleges Eden watched her and commented on how “pretty” her bra was. Eden allegedly kept saying there were no cameras in the locker room. Investigators said Eden told the student not to report the interaction, but she later told her parents and school staff about the incident.

According to the sheriff’s office, Eden told school administrators that he “only provided the student with a shirt.” When school staff said they were going to place him on administrative leave, Eden allegedly admitted that he tried to fix the student’s zipper at her request.

Detective discovered there were two other alleged victims, both female students. One of them reportedly said that Eden “told her there were no cameras in the locker rooms and how it would be ‘easy to do certain things in there.’” Eden also allegedly made comments to the victim about his popularity and how another teacher wanted to engage in sexual activity with him in the locker room.

The third victim reportedly told authorities Eden asked her what she wanted to do after graduation, and she said she wanted to become a gynecologist. Eden allegedly said that he would make a good gynecologist “because he liked to perform oral sex on women.” When Eden asked her if she wanted to earn community service hours, she turned him down.

In a press conference, Judd said investigators believe there are other victims out there, and the sheriff suspects Eden “wanted to have sex with these children.” He added, “This guy is a total creep, and now he’s going to jail. We are not going to tolerate school teachers and coaches preying on our children.”

Eden was booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of lewd offense against a student by an authority figure, lewd and lascivious touching of a minor, and voyeurism.

Eden reportedly started working at Bartow High School in 2019 and has been the school’s head football coach since 2023.

  • Georgia school shooting suspect’s dad won’t face Barrow County jury

Colin Gray, the father of the Apalachee High School shooting suspect, won’t face a jury from Barrow County, where the shooting took place, a judge ruled on Thursday.

Gray, through his attorneys, had made a request to have the trial moved almost a month ago, citing Barrow County as a community where a feeling is “strongly set against him.”

Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm agreed there may be bias, but said he needs time to reach out to other judicial circuits to see if they can accommodate a three-week trial expected to start in September. “Venue will be changed, it will not be a Barrow County jury,” Primm said.

The judge said that the case may be moved to another locale, or else a jury from elsewhere could be shipped in for the trial.

In a hearing on Thursday, Gray’s attorney Jim Berry cited extensive publicity as one of the reasons the case should be moved to a different jurisdiction. He also cited multiple fundraisers and community events that showed support for the victims of the Sept. 4 shooting.

District Attorney Brad Smith agreed with changing the venue of the case, but not because of pre-trial publicity, noting that multiple news stations throughout the state and southeast had coverage relating to the school shooting.

“The reason the state is agreeing to change of venue from Barrow County is because all of Barrow County was a victim in this case,” Smith said.

Smith warned that moving the case to some smaller or far away counties could present its own issues, including witnesses being forced to travel long distances, potential costs, security concerns and lack of hotel spaces resulting in witnesses, defense attorneys and media staying in close proximity.

Smith suggested the case be moved to Walton County, which is located to the south of Barrow County, saying the demographics were similar to Barrow County. But he argued that only jury selection should be done there, and then the jury should be brought to the trial in Barrow.

Berry argued that the priority should be a location where an impartial jury can be seated, not the cheapest and more convenient option for attorneys and witnesses to the case.

“What we need to do is find a place where we can get an impartial and fair jury, I don’t think anywhere, within this epicenter, are we going to be able to find that,” Berry said, suggesting counties in South Georgia.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith testified that moving the trial out of his county would make it harder for his department to cover shifts because officers there and in neighboring counties may be witnesses in the case.

Smith said they did reach out to some of the counties Berry suggested, including Bryan County, and they were told that they would not be able to hold a trial of this magnitude.

Primm said he was concerned with the close proximity of Walton County, given that many people that live in that county could have friends or family that live in Barrow County.

“The closer we are to that epicenter, the more likely we are to have jurors who have been affected or experienced some of the pain of what happened,” Primm said.

Colin Gray remains in jail even though he was granted a $500,000 bond by Primm in February. He ordered Gray to be paid in cash and no contact with witnesses.

Gray has been held at the Barrow County Adult Detention Center since September. Prosecutors had asked for a bond of more than $1 million.

If he makes bond, Gray is expected to live with his sister in Cherokee County. During his bond hearing, Primm said he has seen no evidence about Gray potentially fleeing, being a danger to the community, committing a felony or intimidating witnesses.

The courtroom was once again packed with family and friends of the school shooting victims.

Gray is facing 29 charges, including two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of involuntary manslaughter, five counts of reckless conduct and 20 counts of child cruelty after prosecutors say he knowingly allowed his 14-year-old son, Colt Gray, to possess a gun. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

The teenager is charged in the Sept. 4 shooting at Apalachee High School that left two students —Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn — and two teachers — Cristina Irimie and Richard Aspinwall — dead. Nine others were injured.

Colt Gray was indicted on 55 charges including felony murder, malice murder, aggravated battery, cruelty to children in the first degree and aggravated assault. He pleaded not guilty, waived arraignment and did not appear in court in November.

Attorneys for Colt Gray also filed a motion to move the case out of Barrow County. In the motion, attorneys said they are seeking the venue change arguing it is necessary “to ensure Gray receives a fair trail before an impartial jury.”

Colt Gray’s attorneys also argue that the case had received extensive news coverage, which could impact the possibility of an impartial jury. A hearing has been scheduled for May 6 to deal with Colt Gray’s motion.

The prosecution of Colin Gray is believed to be the first of its kind in Georgia and only the second nationally, after the parents of a Michigan school shooter were convicted of involuntary manslaughter. In both cases, the parents were accused of ignoring warning signs that their children could be capable of violence and allowing the children access to guns.

According to the indictment, Colin Gray allowed his son, Colt Gray, “access to a firearm and ammunition after receiving sufficient warning that Colt Gray would harm and endanger the bodily safety of another” and caused “with criminal negligence” the death of the four victims.

  • Easter: Low Sales Hit Goat Meat Butchers in Enugu

Butchers processing goats in some markets in Enugu say the high cost of goats is adversely affecting their business.

The butchers, who spoke to THE WHISTLER, say the major source of goats to Enugu and South East in general is the North, blaming poor patronage on the high cost of gas which has led to increase in the price of goats in the region.

Ifebuche Nnadi assists his father, a butcher, at New Market, Enugu. He said, “This time last year, the pressure to kill goats for customers was high. Then a big goat was processed for around N3, 000, and we never rested. But this year, two days to Easter, throughout today, I only killed two goats. Things are difficult.”

He said assisting his father in processing goats for customers had assisted him in his educational career.

Quoting him, “I’m in my secondary school final year. What I save in processing goats helps me in school. I buy some of the things I need in school from my savings during festivals like this. But this year’s Easter has not been encouraging. I expect a boom tomorrow. I don’t lose hope easily.”

His father, Moses, said the cause of the rise was because Igbo people are mainly into buying and selling, noting that, “we don’t have a solid base in agro-products”.

In his words, “Igbo land is far behind in animal farming. Our meat supply comes from the North only, though our people rear pigs.

“Goats are very expensive. A sizable goat goes for N150, 000. Before this Easter, it was around N70,000. Goats are cheap in the North, but the middlemen are causing this problem.”

A goat dealer, James Ugwu, corroborates what the butchers said. According to him, “We depend on whatever the suppliers say is the price of goats. At times, the prices are high; at times, they are low. We don’t control the prices. The fact is that we only buy and sell.”

James advised Igbo business men to go into animal farms. He said, “If you don’t manufacture, forces of demand and supplies determine prices.

“I advise South-East stakeholders, including the governors, to explore ways of encouraging animal production in this region. Our local government chairmen should wake up.”

  • Tekken 8 Director and Producer apologize for Season 2’s rocky launch, promise more improvements are coming

Tekken 8’s big Season 2 update did not go over so well with the community, which has left the developers scrambling a bit to fix their changes.

When Bandai Namco launched Tekken’s emergency patch this week, the Director and Producer offered up apologies for the rocky start and promise more improvements are on the way.

Many players were unhappy with the direction of Tekken 8 Season 2 since it bolstered offense even more despite the developers claiming they were focusing on defense this time around.

This included more plus on block moves, attacks that helped cover character weaknesses, a bunch of new 50/50 setups and more which left users feeling like matches were even more one-sided than before.

Tekken 8 Director Kohei ‘Nakatsu’ Ikeda had this statement to offer with the emergency patch that came just two weeks after the original Season 2 patch.

“To all Tekken fans around the world, Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I would like to offer my heartfelt apologies as the Game Director for the fact that the recently released Season 2 did not meet your expectations and caused inconvenience due to critical issues.”

“We take all of your feedback and comments very seriously. The entire team is working together with full commitment to resolve these problems and deliver a better gameplay experience.”

“We will continue to make steady, meaningful improvements one by one, and do our utmost to regain your trust.”

Similarly, Producer Michael Murray also had this message for fans.

“Here’s the patch notes. This is just the first step in many changes to correct the balance of the game. Sincere apologies and thank you for your patience as we deal with these issues. I will continue monitoring your community posts for constructive feedback.”

The new update did offer a ton of changes for the universal game systems and characters alike including increasing the maximum health of the cast so they can withstand more of a beating.

There was also adjustments to chip damage, frame advantage and more that seem like a step in the right direction though there’s still clearly more work to be done.

Another update for Tekken 8 is currently planned to hit the game in mid-May.

You can find a nice breakdown for all of what changed in Tekken 8’s emergency update here.
