  • Harvard Rejects Federal Funding Threats

    By Julianne Malveaux

(Trice Edney Wire) – Kudos to Harvard University for standing up to the bullies in the Administration who are trying to meddle in all forms of university governance.  Using purported antisemitism as a cudgel, the administration is making all kinds of demands on Harvard, just as they did on Columbia University.  But while Columbia folded, Harvard has stood firm that they will not be intimidated, even if they stand to lose more than $2 billion in federal funds.

Harvard is standing strong rejecting the Administration notion that they can mandate changes in ways the university admits students and hires faculty.  They have refused to allow government interference in their DEI policies.  The Administration has asked for ideological audit of academic departments and Harvard refuses.  They have disagreed with the administration request that the university enforce bans on face masks during protests.  Harvard will not impose additional scrutiny on international students, nor will they revise their disciplinary to bow to government demands.

Harvard President Alan Garber ‘s letter to the Harvard community said that Harvard “will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights” by acquiescing to the demands the administration is making.  Government, he says, cannot control a private university’s academic decisions, including areas of scholarly inquiry.  In light of the Executive Order, “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” suggests that he intrusive requests the Administration has made to Harvard and other universities, might also include attacks on departments of African American Studies, on courses on Critical Race Theory, and more.

This 47th President was seemingly elected because some perceived him as better than Vice President Harris on the economy.  But the only economic outcome I see from these attacks on education are the revenue drain that will come when international students choose to study somewhere other than the United States.  While once global students clamored to matriculate at the Harvard, Yales and MITs of our country, why would they come when their visas are being capriciously yanked, when they can be summarily deported, and when the campus environment has become hostile.  International students are paying students, some campus bottom lines will be affected by this administration’s antipathy toward international students.  There are 1.3 million international students in the United States.  Half of them are graduate students.  How would campus climate change if they all were forced to go home?  And what would campus bottom lines look like when this revenue source is imperiled.

Former UN Ambassador Andrew Youn often speak of the international connections he made when he attended Howard University.  He learned about Africa from his classmates, he said.  Learned the value of globalism before he ever left the country because his colleagues shared their experiences.  The attack on international students leaves American students much poorer, with an aspect of their education diminished when campuses are hostile environments for global students.

The administration has established a Presidential Commission on Campus Accountability (PCCA), although they have been quite translucent about its composition or duties.  Based on the demands transmitted to Harvard, this commission will likely embark on an anti-free speech, anti-DEI, anti-global stance agenda laid out by the administration.  The commission, supposedly, will be able to audit federal funding use, and evaluate university policies on admissions, hiring and discipline.  Will they be able to veto a faculty hire, or suggest one more acceptable to the administration?  Will they be able to suggest disciplinary action?  Private universities are under no obligation to adhere to federal scrutiny unless they are breaking the law.  It seems to me that the very establishment of the PCCA may be unlawful.

Most universities are heartened by Harvard’s action.  But Harvard has a $50 billion endowment and several former Presidents among its alumni, not that the current President cares about any of that.  Smaller colleges and universities with smaller endowments may feel pressured to conform to the administration’s demands and change their policies.   What if this administration decides to go after Howard University, the Mecca with a line item in the federal budget.  What if they decide that Tuskegee University, with millions in federal contracts, doesn’t adhere to their standards.  Many small HBCUs, some tottering on the brink of insolvency, are especially vulnerable to the pressure this administration can bring.

No one is surprised by the administration’s attack on higher education, and everyone should. Be concerned about what this means for the future.  Ambassador Young relishes the connections he made as an undergraduate student with others from around the world.  Will people from other countries be eager, in the future, to come to study, to do research, to attend conferences, to engage with their peers.  The attack on higher education, combined with the dangerous assault on globalism, isolates the United States and shatters global connections.  US based global activists must push back on these actions.

  • Manchester United now following €80M winger very closely

Manchester United are lining up their targets for the summer transfer window in a bid to turn the club around and bounce back from this year’s disastrous season.

Sitting in 14th in the Premier League, a top half finish is still mathematically possible, whilst seemingly unlikely.

However, with The Red Devils still the only undefeated team in the Europa League, lifting the trophy could still be a real possibility.

This would not only bring another trophy to Old Trafford, but would also grant them qualification to the Champions League and give them an extra £100 million in income because of it.

With the club still hopeful of having the lure of European football, their recruitment team are shortlisting some key targets to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad ready for next season.

Now, L’Equipe has revealed that one man joining their shortlist is Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche.

The 23-year-old as emerged as a target for United as well as Manchester City and PSG thanks to his impressive season for the Ligue 1 side.

With six goals and ten assists in 38 games, Akliouche has made his mark for Monaco across Ligue 1, holding second place in the league, and the Champions League, making it to the round of 16.

However, Akliouche’s contract runs until 2028, with no release clause, putting Monaco in a really strong position to negotiate for any deal.

Currently its understood that the club are wanting between £60 and £69 million (€70 and €80 million) for him, which could be out of United’s price range unless they win the Europa League.

With so much hinging on the tournament, Amorim’s men will no doubt be throwing their all to reach the final and beyond now.

  • France’s 3D Mapping Of Romania’s “Focsani Gate,” For Defensive Purposes?

France’s 3D Mapping Of Romania’s “Focsani Gate,” For Defensive Purposes?

    Andrew Korybko writes on Substack

The attention that France is paying to tactical details like the local terrain near the Romanian-Moldovan-Ukrainian trijunction suggests that its talk about an intervention in Ukraine is more serious than some think.

Le Figaro reported in early April that French military cartographers carried out 3D mapping of Romania’s “Focsani Gate” near that country’s trijunction with Moldova and Ukraine. The pretext was ostensibly to bolster the host country’s defenses in the scenario that Russian forces in Ukraine ever approach this region and subsequently prepare to invade NATO’s southeastern flank. The current context suggests that France might have ulterior motives, however, considering its talk about intervening in Ukraine.

Updated knowledge of the “Focsani Gate” could enable French forces in Romania to swiftly advance towards the Ukrainian ports of Reni and Izmail on the Danube River if the decision is made to formally involve Paris in the conflict. Kiev officially employs those ports for exporting grain, but they’re also suspected of being entry points for Western arms, hence their dual importance. Their other significance is lying on the route to Odessa, which France will likely seek to secure if it intervenes in Ukraine.

All three would therefore likely figure into France’s immediate military-strategic goals if it formally involves itself in the conflict, thus explaining the need for positioning its forces in Romania and especially 3D mapping the “Focsani Gate” for the ulterior purpose of facilitating this scenario. To be clear, France might not go through with an intervention since Russia said that it’ll target all foreign forces in Ukraine and the US said that it won’t extent Article 5 defense guarantees to NATO countries’ troops there.

Nevertheless, it’s worth being aware of the attention that France is paying to tactical details like the local terrain near the Romanian-Moldovan-Ukrainian trijunction, which suggests that its talk about an intervention in Ukraine is more serious than some think. With these possible motives in mind, it can be concluded that France envisages Romania but also Moldova falling within its “sphere of influence” potentially together with the historical Budjak region of what’s nowadays southwestern Ukraine.

These plans, regardless of whether or not they unfold, are part of France’s competition for leadership of post-conflict Europe that was analyzed here. The gist is that this portion of Southeastern Europe is more likely to remain within France’s “sphere of influence” than anywhere else in the continent due to its military presence in Romania and last spring’s defense pact with Moldova. Although very poor, these two fraternal countries occupy strategic locations that can elevate France’s role in post-conflict Europe.

They essentially serve as NATO’s gateway to Odessa and Transnistria, and if France establishes itself as the main foreign force there, then it can have a decisive say in any such future operations. Furthermore, France might even make its rotational military presence in Romania a permanent one along the lines of the newly opened German base in Lithuania, thus meaning that no return to the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act like Putin wants would be possible without both Berlin and Paris’ agreement.

It’s premature to predict that France will do so, but such a scenario can’t be ruled out either since it would align with Paris’ Great Power goals. After all, these new 3D maps weren’t produced just for the sake of it or as a favor to Romania, but to facilitate a French intervention into Ukraine. Even if one isn’t forthcoming….

France could entrench its forces in Romania by one day opening a permanent base, which could enable it to retain this option for the future and give it military-diplomatic leverage vis-a-vis Russia.

  • Man dies several days after being attacked with hatchet while sitting at bus stop with wife

TUCSON, Ariz. (TCN) — A 32-year-old Alabama man passed away almost two weeks after he was violently attacked by a stranger with a hatchet while he and his wife waited at a bus stop.

On April 5 at approximately 10 a.m., Tucson Police Department officers responded to an assault call on East Broadway Boulevard and South 6th Avenue, where they found Jacob Couch with sharp-force injuries. Witnesses and bystanders reportedly rendered aid before police and fire showed up. Paramedics transported Couch to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Officers searched for the suspect, Daniel Michael, in the area, but did not locate him.

Investigators learned Michael allegedly approached Couch and his wife at the bus stop and “initiated a confrontation with the couple.” During the confrontation, Michael reportedly pulled out a hatchet and struck Couch in the neck. Michael left the scene and boarded a streetcar.

Michael was arrested April 8 on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with serious injury.

KOLD-TV reports Couch died Thursday, April 17, just before 9 p.m. when his heart gave out. Couch’s sister-in-law told the news station, “The injury cut the artery in the back of his neck in half. It went so deep that it hit his skull.”

Tucson Police said they have amended the charges against Michael to first-degree murder.

Couch and his wife were heading back to their home state of Alabama after spending several months in California, where they went to start over when their son was stillborn in May 2024, according to KOLD.

According to Arizona Republic, detectives reportedly located a hatchet and clothing at Michael’s apartment that matched witnesses’ descriptions. Michael allegedly initially claimed he didn’t attack Couch, then later said he was drunk and didn’t remember what happened.

Michael reportedly said he thought Couch was using drugs, and at one point, he reached into his pocket. When he did that, Michael took out a hatchet from his jacket and attacked Couch.

Michael is in custody at the Pima County Jail with bond set at $1 million.

  • Court Denies Diddy’s Request To Delay Sex-Trafficking Trial

A federal judge has rejected Sean “Diddy” Combs’ request to postpone his upcoming sex-trafficking trial in May.

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled on Friday that Combs’ motion came too late, as the court had already scheduled the trial to commence on May 5.

The hip-hop star, 55, is facing five criminal charges, including sex trafficking and other illegal activities for over two decades.

He has been held in custody at a Brooklyn detention centre since September 2024.

Federal prosecutors allege that Combs used his influential entertainment empire to facilitate and conceal sexual exploitation of women from 2004 to 2024.

According to them, he orchestrated and profited from “freak offs” — recorded sex acts involving women and male sex workers, who were sometimes transported across various states.

However, Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges with his legal team arguing that any sexual activity was consensual.

Defence attorney Marc Agnifilo asked the court earlier this week for a two-month delay, citing new charges filed on April 4 and the need to review additional email evidence related to an alleged victim in the case.

Prosecutors opposed the delay, stating the recent charges did not introduce substantially new acts, arguing that Combs is not entitled to the victim’s private communications.

Judge Subramanian is still considering other issues ahead of the trial, including whether accusers can testify anonymously.

Combs is known for founding Bad Boy Records and launching the careers of artists like Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, the Notorious B.I.G., and Usher.

  • Drinks by the pool? Not so fast, says senator who visited Abrego Garcia

    By MEG KINNARD, Associated Press

There was the pool furniture in the background. There were the tropical drinks, which looked to be margaritas garnished with cherries. And then there were the deported prisoner and the American senator, sitting and chatting.

That senator, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, accused El Salvador’s government on Friday of aiming to paint the picture of a leisurely respite for the wrongly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia by staging their meeting with drinks appearing to be alcohol, and angling to set the meeting by a hotel pool.

Van Hollen referred to the stagecraft with a term that had ricocheted around social media for much of the day: “Margaritagate.”

“Nobody drank any margaritas or sugar water or whatever it is,” the Democratic senator said, calling the whole situation “a lesson” in “the lengths that President Bukele will do to deceive people about what’s going on.”
