  • Couple and one other crushed to d3ath in Ondo auto crash

A fatal accident has claimed the lives of a couple and one other persons in Oke Aro area of Akure in Ondo State.

The accident occurred along the Itagbanja axis of Idanre Road on Friday morning, April 18, 2025.

According to multiple eyewitnesses, the crash, which involved a commercial tricycle and a truck, was said to have been caused by reckless driving on the part of both drivers.

Among the deceased, yet to be formally identified, were a husband and his wife, witnesses revealed.

While two of the victims d!ed on the spot, the third reportedly gave up the ghost.

The mangled remains of the tricycle, also referred to as Keke Napep, had been cleared from the scene.

It was gathered that the driver of the truck, in a bid to evade an irate mob, fled immediately after the crash but later turned himself in at the B Division Police Station in Oke Aro.

The tragedy sparked outrage among residents, who marched to the police station, hurling stones and demanding justice for the victims.

  • Atiku-led coalition against Tinubu a waste of time – Fayose

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, on Friday dismissed the coalition of opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general election as a waste of time.

Some opposition elements led by Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar formed a coalition last month in the efforts to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

Also in the group were the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and other aggrieved persons in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai dumped the APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) last month.

Fayose, who featured in a Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, said the coalition would fail because the PDP governors who are fighting for their own political survival are not with Atiku.

He said most of the governors elected on the opposition parties’ platforms prefer Tinubu to the former vice president for their survival.

He noted that no prominent Nigerian is part of the coalition arrangement.

The former governor vowed that he would work against Atiku again in the 2027 election.

He said: “Their coalition is a dead horse ab initio. Tell me one positive person, well respected Nigerians that has given his voice in support of this coalition.

“If anybody is fighting out of issues with his party, he can resolve that with his party. The (PDP) governors’ actions and statement in Ibadan is to tell Atiku that we are not with you, we are going nowhere, we have our own identity.

“So, that coalition is just in the imagination of people trying to bring it to fruition. So, let me say to you, it’s a waste of time.

“I publicly worked against Atiku, and I am saying for the second time, if Atiku comes again, I will work against him. It is time to learn our lesson.

“After eight years of a Northerner, it is the turn of a Southerner which could involve someone from the East, South-West or South-South.

“Those who gave or zoned power back to the North caused all these problems.

“You don’t have to like a Nyesom Wike or a Peter Obi, but there should be an unwritten, respected gentleman’s understanding of power shift.”

  • EEOC sidelining transgender discrimination cases, employees say

    By CLAIRE SAVAGE, Associated Press

The federal agency tasked with protecting workers’ civil rights is classifying all new gender identity-related discrimination cases as its lowest priority, essentially putting them on indefinite hold, according to two agency employees.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission held a meeting on Wednesday clarifying how it would treat new worker complaints of gender-identity discrimination in view of President Donald Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order declaring that the government would recognize only two “immutable” sexes — male and female.

Staff who handle incoming charges, or intakes, were directed to code them as “C,” the lowest categorization in the EEOC’s system that is usually reserved for meritless charges, according to the agency employees who attended the Microsoft Teams meeting for intake supervisors, district directors and support staff that was led by the EEOC’s national intake coordinator. The employees asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to reveal the meeting details.

An EEOC spokesman declined to comment on the meeting, saying that “per federal law, we cannot discuss investigatory practices.”

  • Boko Haram attacks Borno community, k!lls two soldiers and civilians

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have launched an attack on the recently resettled Yamtake community in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, k!lling two soldiers and several civilians.

Security and local sources confirmed the attack, saying the assailants invaded the communities around 11:15pm on Thursday, April 17, 2025, the punch reported.

One of the military sources said before a reinforcement team was sent from Gwoza, the damage had been done as the attackers stormed Yamtake military formation.

“We are waiting for the reinforcement team to return, but we learnt that two of our men and other civilians were affected. I advise we wait until they return,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Ali Ndume, who confirmed the incident said he had been in touch with the people of Yamtake community.

“It is unfortunate that our people in Yamtake village came under deadly Boko Haram invasion last night (Thursday). It’s one of the communities that received its IDPs recently, they were resettled by Borno State Government,” Ndume said.

“It is very sad that two soldiers paid the supreme price, while an unspecified number of innocent civilians were among the casualties. May their gentle souls rest in peace.

“But let me also commend Brig. Gen. Nasir Abdullahi, the Brigade Commander 26 Task Force and his gallant troops for their unwavering sacrifices and doggedness in repelling several attacks, especially those targeted at Gwoza town

“I was reliably informed that the attackers after wreaking havoc in Yamtake made an attempt to infiltrate Gwoza town, but the troops played a gallant role to repel the attack. On several occasions, troops lay ambush in and around Gwoza town which helped in preventing terrorists who are making all efforts to dislodge Gwoza people living in the Council Headquarters.

“In the past one month, several communities in Borno South, North and Central Senatorial Districts witnessed deadly Boko Haram attacks without confrontation. The situation is worrisome.

“Let me therefore use this opportunity to advocate for the setting up of Armed Community Defence to complement the efforts of the military. This is because men of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), hunters and vigilantes have been doing their best, but they have limitations, as they only carry den guns, sticks which they found it very difficult to confront the terrorists.

“More so, I want to reiterate my calls on the Federal Government and the Nigerian Military to deploy Technology, Equipment, Arms and Ammunition, Motivation (TEAAM), which is the only way to end the over decade Boko Haram atrocities in Borno, North East and other parts of the country.”

  • Okpebholo threatens kidnappers with death penalty in Edo

The Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, warned on Friday that kidnappers caught in the state would face the death penalty.

The governor, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, gave the warning an interactive session held at the Uromi Town Hall with leaders and members of the Arewa community in Esan land.

Okpebholo vowed that he would sign the death warrant of anyone convicted of kidnapping in the state.

He said his administration would not tolerate killing and kidnapping anymore in the state.

The governor said the State House of Assembly had passed a bill amending the Kidnapping Prohibition Amendment Law (and Related Matters 2013).

The bill, according to him, prescribes the death penalty for kidnappers and mandates the confiscation and demolition of properties used for the crimes.

Okpebholo said: “I take the issue of insecurity seriously and will not bend the rules but apply them strictly. The new law in the State permits us to demolish their properties and confiscate their lands. We will build vigilante team offices on those lands.

“We will bring kidnappers to the public and execute them to show our seriousness, according to the laws already passed by the EDHA. I will not be afraid to sign it.

“The kind of security we want to have in the state is one where security remnants women are paid salaries, unlike before, where the people will just put on uniforms without being paid. We are going to employ vigilante teams and pay them salaries, and stop people from just putting on their uniforms.

“These people will work with security agencies, and they will be trained on how to fight crimes and handle criminals. I will not wait until campaign time to solve your problems. I will start to address the problems facing our people in the market, and everywhere.

“It is time to start profiling people from other states who claim to be from the North and ensure they don’t spoil your name. We will fence the market, put streetlights, and build abattoirs for those who kill cows. We want to secure the people of Edo State.”
