  • Unlocking the secret of how mitochondria convert sugars into energy

After 50 years of mystery, researchers at the University of Cambridge have revealed how a molecular machine inside mitochondria enables cells to generate energy from sugars, a process crucial to all life on Earth. Using cryo-electron microscopy, the team uncovered the structure and function of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier at the atomic scale.

This carrier transports pyruvate, a byproduct of sugar breakdown, into mitochondria—the cell’s powerhouse—where it helps boost energy production 15-fold in the form of ATP, the cellular fuel. The process is akin to canal locks: the carrier’s outer gate opens to admit pyruvate, closes, then opens an inner gate to release it into the mitochondrion.

Understanding this mechanism may lead to treatments for diabetes, fatty liver disease, Parkinson’s disease, certain cancers, and even hair loss.

Blocking the pyruvate carrier could redirect cells to alternative energy sources like fats or amino acids. This approach might treat fatty liver disease by utilizing harmful fat deposits in the liver or starve pyruvate-dependent cancer cells, like those in prostate cancer, by cutting off their energy supply.

Supercomputers reveal the secrets of cell’s energy

Potential applications extend to reversing hair loss by promoting lactate production in hair follicle cells when pyruvate entry is blocked.

Professor Edmund Kunji, who led the study, noted that understanding how this carrier works offers exciting opportunities for structure-based drug design. Cryo-electron microscopy has allowed researchers to visualize how drugs bind to the carrier, creating the potential for more effective, targeted therapies.

“This discovery opens the door to transformative advancements in medicine,” said Professor Kunji. “It’s a game-changer for understanding mitochondria and their role in health and disease.”

  • How to Get Binoculars in Beaks

Beaks is all about adding rarer and epic birds to your collection by putting them to sleep. However, there might always be some annoying little ones that tend to hide behind the leaves or fly to higher branches. So, at these times, you’ll require a good pair of binoculars to track down those troublesome birds. Fortunately, Beaks provides both basic and advanced binoculars for all the beginners and those who have progressed a lot in the game. Want one? Keep reading as we show you how to get Binoculars in Beaks right here.

How to Get Binoculars in Beaks

Both the basic and advanced pair of Binoculars are located at the same location as the Glider in Beaks, at the Pinewood River area of Mountain Beaks. Although the Mountain Beaks area is easily noticeable, finding out the Pinewood River can be a bit tricky. So, follow these simple steps to get the Binoculars easily.

    • From the first spawn point, which is Beakwoods, head straight from the banner, jump down, and then take the left path to find the entrance to Mountain Beaks.
    • Now, walk this stony path to reach the ground above, and you’ll find a banner saying ‘Mountain Beaks.’
    • Take the path on your left and get to the next level.
    • Here, you will find another banner, and opposite it will be a series of bushes hiding a secret area.
    • Walk through the bushes and then pass the Axel NPC to find a checkpoint labeled ‘Pinewood River‘.
    • Continue on the same path to find a small river, and at the end of this river, you’ll locate both the basic and advanced binoculars.
    • Here, you can purchase basic binoculars for $1,500 and advanced ones for $2,500.

All Uses of Binoculars in Beaks

Binoculars are one of the most essential pieces of gear in Beaks, used to watch and find birds. Sometimes, birds tend to hide behind trees or inside leaves on branches, or they might fly at great heights.

Here, you’ll need a pair of binoculars to locate them from a distance and aim your shot more accurately. The basic set of binoculars can be suitable for beginners, although it comes with limited zooming capabilities. Hence, you can aim for the Advanced pair to get better clarity and zooming power, making it easier to spot the birds.

Apart from watching the birds, is there anything much you can do with them, but again, what else would you expect from a pair of binoculars? Simply open up your inventory, search for the pair you bought by typing its name in the search bar, and then drag it to your hotbar.

Now, press the corresponding key to hold the binocular in your hand. Now you can click the right mouse button or use the scroll button to zoom in and zoom out on the bird you want to watch.

And that’s how you get the binoculars in Beaks. Have you got this item yet? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Motorola Edge 60 Launching April 24 with Upgraded Specs

Motorola is set to launch its new phones — the Edge 60 and Razr 60 series — in a global event on April 24. This follows recent leaks about the Edge 60 Pro. Now, new images and full specs of the standard Motorola Edge 60 have surfaced online, courtesy of renowned leaker @evleaks.

Motorola Edge 60 to Launch Globally on April 24

The Edge 60 is the direct successor to last year’s Edge 50. It boasts a 6.7-inch curved pOLED display with a 1.5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This promises silky smooth operation and sharp display for everyday use and entertainment.

Internally, Motorola is replacing the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition from the Edge 50 with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor. Former rumors had spoken about the Dimensity 7400, but it still makes for a considerable boost in terms of performance.

It will have a high-strength camera setup. At the back, it boasts a 50MP primary camera with Sony’s LYTIA 700C and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). It further boasts an ultra-wide-angle camera and a 3x telephoto camera. At the front for self-shots, it is a high-strength 50MP sensor.

When memory is concerned, Edge 60 comes with 12GB of RAM and virtual RAM up to 12GB. It also features 512GB of built-in storage, which provides enough space for apps, videos, and photos.

Battery life should also get better. The phone features a 5200mAh battery — marginally larger than the Edge 50’s 5000mAh battery. It comes with support for 68W Turbo charging, so it will get charged in a flash.

The other thing of interest is durability. The Edge 60 meets MIL-STD-810H standards, which means that it will be able to withstand harsh usage. It should also feature an IP69 rating, which will give excellent resistance to dust and water.

Pricing information will be revealed during the official launch. An Indian release is also imminent, as Motorola has begun teasing a new Edge phone for the country.

We will have more information as the release date draws near.

  • Calls for state policing intensify following Plateau, Benue massacres

Amid renewed violence and tragic killings in Plateau and Benue states, leaders from the Southern and Middle-Belt regions of Nigeria have issued a clarion call for urgent security reforms, including the creation of state police.

They also encouraged citizens to defend themselves in the face of what they described as “unrelenting genocidal massacres” carried out by suspected Fulani militias.

In a joint statement released on Friday, the Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), comprising Oba Oladipo Olaitan (Afenifere), Dr. Bitrus Pogu (Middle Belt Forum), Senator John Azuta-Mbata (Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide), and Ambassador Godknows Igali (PANDEF), condemned the Federal Government’s continued inaction in addressing the persistent insecurity and displacement affecting their communities.

“The only crime of our people is being Nigerians living on their ancestral land,” the statement read. “In every community attacked, the Fulani militias not only destroy lives and properties but often settle on the lands, unchallenged by the very security forces tasked with protecting citizens.”

The leaders lamented that the most recent attacks, which occurred last Sunday in Zike and Kakpa villages in the Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area, claimed the lives of at least 50 Irigwe people. This followed the earlier massacre of over 80 individuals in Bokkos Local Government Area, bringing grief and outrage across the region.

Describing the killings as planned and coordinated, the forum decried what they see as a failure of the Nigerian state to uphold its responsibility to protect citizens. “The latest bloodshed has pushed well-meaning Nigerians beyond the threshold of mourning into a call for decisive action,” the group declared.

They criticized the Federal Government for rejecting repeated proposals on restructuring, implementation of true federalism, and the establishment of state police. These are reforms they argue are crucial to restoring safety and autonomy to vulnerable communities.

“The Nigerian security forces, once respected internationally, are overstretched, worn down by multiple conflicts across the country,” the statement continued. “Yet, the government continues to resist practical solutions, including the end to open grazing and the creation of local policing structures.”

The leaders painted a grim picture of displaced citizens packed into camps, living as “rescued slaves,” with little hope of returning to their ancestral homes. Meanwhile, they say, the attackers remain emboldened by the apparent impunity and lack of federal response.

“This country has effectively surrendered parts of its territory,” the statement warned, “allowing territorial conquest under the guise of communal clashes, while pretending all is well.”

In a deeply emotional and patriotic appeal, the leaders urged Nigerians, especially those in besieged communities, to take ownership of their own safety. “Defend your lives. Defend your homes. Defend your lands. You have the right to exist in peace.”

  • Manchester United receive €100M setback

Manchester United have made no secret about their desire to sign a striker this summer.

Joshua Zirkzee, signed for around £36.5m last summer, and Rasmus Hojlund, signed in 2023 for around £72m, have both failed to impress this season.

With just six Premier League goals between them, Ruben Amorim is keen to add a more reliable goal-scorer to his attacking line-up this summer.

Links to Victor Osimhen, Benjamin Sesko, and Victor Gyokeres have made headlines ahead of the transfer window, but Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of one target.

Hugo Ekitike has impressed this season for Eintracht Frankfurt, and was reportedly set to be available for around £69m this summer.

But according to Florian Plettenberg, the Frenchman’s recent performances have seen that figure rise by at least £17m.

The German club are still prepared to allow Ekitike to leave the club this summer but will hold firm in their valuation, with the striker under contract until 2029.

Ekitike was signed by Frankfurt last summer for around £14m, following a six-month loan move from PSG.

And the 22-year-old has starred in Germany, scoring 21 goals so far this campaign.

Drawing comparisons to Newcastle United star Alexander Isak, the forward is tall and slight but extremely skillful, and devastating in front of goal.

His performances in the Europa League have especially raised eyebrows, with a goal against Tottenham Hotspur last week making headlines for its quality.

Manchester United may have competition if they are to attempt to bring Ekitike to Old Trafford, with Arsenal also linked to the forward and keen to add a striker to their ranks this summer.

  • 17-Year-Old Obi Supporter Arrested Over Alleged Street Fight, Robbery – Police

The Lagos State Police Command has defended its action in the arrest and remand of Alabi Quadri, a 17-year-old boy who gained national attention during the general elections for bravely standing in front of Labour Party presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi’s convoy.

In a statement issued Saturday, the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Quadri was arrested in connection with a violent street clash that occurred earlier this year in the Amukoko area of Lagos.

The incident, which took place on January 22, involved a large-scale disturbance between rival youth groups, the police said without providing evidence.

It said the confrontation escalated into a chaotic street fight, resulting in significant damage to both public and private property

Several innocent bystanders were reportedly injured and robbed during the violence, according to the police, contrary to what the family said.

Hundeyin said the police launched an immediate investigation following the unrest.

Eyewitnesses and victims came forward with testimonies and identifications that aided in arresting the suspects, the police said, without naming any of the eyewitnesses or providing real details.

“Following a thorough and transparent investigation, Alabi Quadri and four others were arrested and charged in court in connection with the crime. The suspects were remanded by the court to a correctional facility pending the conclusion of legal proceedings in the matter,” Hundeyin stated.

He emphasised that the police acted on credible evidence and followed due process, adding that the police’s role ends once a case is charged in court, in line with Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

“All police actions taken in this case have been in accordance with the laid-down processes and in accordance with due process and procedures and based on credible evidence gathered during the investigation.

“We urge the public to remain calm and allow the judicial process to take its course and be fully exhausted in the case. The Command remains open to engaging with the general public, opinion groups, and community stakeholders to transparently clarify every concern and ensure justice is served fairly and transparently.

“It’s a statutory procedure in the criminal justice system and codes that police actions terminate where matters are taken to court,” Hundeyin added.

Quadri was released on Thursday from the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre after spending several months in detention over an alleged armed robbery charge.

He was discharged by Magistrate A.O. Olorunfemi of the Apapa Magistrate Court, following legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr Babajide Martins, who found no evidence linking him to the alleged crime.

According to his lawyer, Mr Inibehe Effiong, Quadri was abducted near his home in the Amukoko area of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government by two known street thugs, Lege and Baba Waris, and handed over to the Amukoko Divisional Police Headquarters.

He alleged that Quadri had been a target of harassment from local gangs who resented the goodwill and donations he received after his viral encounter with Obi’s convoy. His family was reportedly pressured by community leaders, including the local Baale, to appease the thugs with gifts such as a cow and bags of rice.

In a controversial turn, police allegedly included Quadri’s name in a case involving four unidentified adult suspects, falsely stating his age as 18 to justify the charges.

Public attention intensified after Ms Hassana Nurudeen, co-founder of Ray of Hope Prison Outreach, raised alarm over Quadri’s detention, prompting a legal campaign for his release.

During Thursday’s court session, the magistrate cited the DPP’s advice, which recommended against prosecuting Quadri due to a lack of evidence.

Quadri’s lawyer is now demanding a public apology from the Nigeria Police Force and N100m in compensation for what is described as his unlawful arrest and detention.
