  • Child, 7, dies after woman ‘sends poisoned Easter egg to ex-boyfriend’s family’

A seven-year-old child has died and two others have been left hospitalised in a serious condition after allegedly eating a poisoned Easter egg.

A 35-year-old woman who sent the Easter egg to her ex-boyfriend’s family has been arrested in the Médio Mearim region of northern Brazil.

Jordélia Pereira Barbosa was taken away by police on Thursday, April 17, who accused her of sending the spiked chocolate to a family in Santa Ines, also in northern Brazil.

Luís Fernando Rocha Silva died in the early hours of Thursday morning and his mum Mirian Lira, 32, and sister Evelyn Fernanda, 13, are still in hospital.

The unsuspecting family were delivered the Easter egg by a motorcycle courier on Wednesday night, April 16. A message from a secret sender was left with the egg, which said: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.”

Mirian reportedly also received a mystery call later that night from an anonymous person who did not respond when the mum-of-two asked who was on the other end. The mysterious caller asked the mum if she had been sent the Easter egg.

The mothers sister, Naiza Santos, said: “The woman on the phone said ‘you’ll find out who it is’. And she hung up and didn’t say anything.”

“When the egg arrived, there was no identification of who had sent it, just the note and they didn’t say who it was from,” Santos said.

“She [Miriam] only received the call, the voice was of a woman, asking if she had received [the Easter egg]. She said, ‘Yes I did, who is it?’.

Santos said that the woman told Lira, “You’ll find out who it is,” and hung up the phone without saying anything else.

Her seven-year-old son was the first to start feeling unwell, and he was rushed to a local hospital, according to Globo. Luís died several hours after he was admitted and his mum only started showing worrying symptoms while at the hospital for her son.

Her hands reportedly started to turn purple and she was struggling to breathe before being admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

13-year-old Evelyn quickly followed and was admitted into the emergency unit with the same symptoms as her mum. The mother and daughter are reportedly fighting for their lives at the Municipal Hospital of Imperatriz.

Police have launched an investigation into the shocking case and revealed samples of the potentially killer egg were taken away for analysis at the Imperatriz Criminalistics Institute.

Jordelia Barbosa, 36, was on a bus attempting to flee when she was taken into custody in Santes Inés on Thursday afternoon.

The arrest came less than 24 hours after she allegedly had a tray with the holiday treats delivered to the family’s home, 239 miles away in the town Imperatriz.

The Maranhão Civil Police said Barbosa had previously dated Mirian’s former husband and father of her two children, Rafael Silva.

This has not been the first time a potentially poisoned festive treat has allegedly killed unsuspecting victims. A Christmas cake laced with arsenic is believed to have killed three family members in Brazil.

Maida Bernice Flores da Silva, 58, Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos, 65 and Tatiana Silvia dos Santos, 43 all died in December after biting into the homemade fruitcake. Their relative Deise Moura dos Anjos, 42, was arrested in January on suspicion of triple murder and triple attempted murder – and was accused of poisoning the flour used to make the sweet treat.

Deise died in February and it is believed she took her own life in her prison cell, while in custody. Local reports stated that, according to the police, Diese left a note in her cell claiming she was innocent and that she felt depressed.

Another family in Australia faced a lunchtime horror when three people died after eating a beef Wellington that was also allegedly poisoned. Erin Patterson has been accused of triple murder after cooking for her ex-husband’s family but she has denied any wrongdoing.

Police believed the unsuspecting Wellington was laced with poisonous mushrooms. The victims died days after eating the meal.

  • I Tweaked 10 Samsung Phone Settings — Now My Galaxy Feels Smarter and Faster

Samsung Galaxy phones are feature-rich — and with a lot of settings for us to tweak – no debate there. But if you’re sticking with the out-of-the-box setup, you’re missing out. I’ve used plenty of Galaxy models over the years, and every time, I make a series of quick changes that instantly make the phone feel more mine. Whether it’s a tweak for privacy, performance, or pure convenience, these 10 adjustments (plus one bonus) genuinely improve the user experience. Some are obvious; others, not so much.

Let’s dig in and you will see why these settings can transform your Samsung Galaxy.

    Source: Notebookcheck

    1. Kill the Pop-Ups

You’re mid-scroll, deep into an article or mid-text with a friend, and bam — a message notification hijacks your screen. It’s distracting and, frankly, unnecessary.

Turn them off. Head to Settings > Notifications > Notification pop-up style > Apps to show as brief, then toggle off All apps. You’ll still get alerts — just not the kind that pull focus like a toddler with a kazoo.

    2. Ditch the Buttons, Swipe Instead

Unless you manually changed it during setup, your phone likely uses the old-school three-button navigation. Functional? Sure. Efficient? Not really.

Switch to swipe gestures for a cleaner look and smoother feel. Go to Settings > Display > Navigation bar > Swipe gestures. Once you adjust, you’ll wonder why you didn’t switch sooner.

    3. Max Out the Display

Here’s a weird thing: the Galaxy S25 Ultra comes with a jaw-droppingly good screen — sharp, vivid, less reflective — but it doesn’t use its highest resolution by default.

    samsung galaxy settings

To fix that, tap over to Settings > Display > Screen resolution and select the QHD+ option. Yes, it’ll use a bit more battery, but Samsung’s efficiency is no joke. I still get a full day’s charge, easy.

    4. Reassign the Side Key

Let’s be honest: no one’s asking for Bixby. And calling the power button a “side key” doesn’t make it less annoying when it opens something you didn’t mean to launch.

Here’s how to take control: Go to Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Press and hold, then select Power off menu. Simple, and now your phone works like it should.

    5. Fix Lock Screen Notifications

One UI 7 now shows tiny icons in the top corner of the lock screen by default. Not great if you prefer actual notification previews or want to hide sensitive content.

Go to Settings > Notifications > Lock screen notifications. Choose Cards for full previews, or enable Hide content if you want privacy.

    6. Sign In to Your Samsung Account

Look, I get it creating another account feels like a chore. But if you’re using a Galaxy phone, having a Samsung account unlocks a lot: cloud backups, Galaxy Themes, Samsung Wallet, and the Galaxy Store.

Even if you rely on Google services, it’s worth signing in to make phone upgrades and data transfers seamless.

    7. Download Good Lock

Good Lock is Samsung’s best-kept secret a customization app packed with tools that push your phone further. I use the One Hand Operation+ module to make swiping down from the screen’s edge bring up shortcuts or Quick Settings.

    samsung galaxy settings

Find it in the Galaxy Store, not the Play Store. And once you’ve got it, you’ll wonder how you lived without it.

    8. Ditch the Bloat

Your phone likely came with a bunch of pre-installed apps you don’t need. The good news? You can now remove most of them. No Samsung TV? Delete the app. Don’t use Microsoft CoPilot? Out it goes.

Start with the usual suspects: Facebook, Samsung Tutor, OneDrive, and whatever else you never open.

    9. Personalize the Home Screen

Widgets on Samsung phones are actually useful not just clutter. I use the Calendar widget because it blends into the wallpaper thanks to adjustable transparency. It looks good and doesn’t scream for attention.

Also, bump the icon grid to 5×5 to fit more apps without turning your screen into a mess. While you’re at it, try Wallpaper and style > Color palette to theme your icons based on your wallpaper. It’s subtle, but satisfying.

    10. Always-On Means Always On

By default, Samsung’s Always On Display only shows up when you tap the screen. Kind of misses the point, right?

Change that to actually always on: Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always-on Display > Show always. I keep mine minimal no wallpaper, just time and date on a black screen to save battery.

Bonus: Bring Back the Old Notification Panel

One UI’s new notification panel borrows a little too much from iOS. Now, swiping down from the right pulls up Quick Settings, while the left brings down notifications. If that split-screen setup bugs you, here’s how to roll it back:

    samsung galaxy settings

Swipe down > Tap the Pencil icon > Panel settings > Select Together. Boom classic layout restored.

Samsung’s Galaxy lineup is some of the most capable hardware on the market. But capability only matters when it’s tuned to you. These settings don’t just make your Samsung Galaxy look better they make it work better, faster, and smarter. Take 10 minutes to apply them, and your Gal

  • No Going Back On Our Economic Reforms, Cardoso Declares

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showcased its bold reform agenda at a high-profile global forum at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York, just days before the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Spring meetings.

This strategic summit, in collaboration with JP Morgan, the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), and the African Private Capital Association (AVCA), marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s economic renaissance.

Under the banner “The Nigeria Investment Agenda: Pathways for Growth & Global Partnerships,” the forum attracted an influential assembly of global investors, diaspora leaders, and financial powerbrokers eager to witness Nigeria’s economic transformation firsthand.

In his address, the CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso unveiled his visionary reform blueprint that has already begun reshaping Nigeria’s financial landscape through decisive monetary tightening, revolutionary FX market transparency, and fortified financial governance.

“These reforms aren’t merely policy adjustments,” Cardoso emphasized, “but foundational pillars rebuilding Nigeria’s economic architecture for generations to come.”

Governor Cardoso declared the CBN’s determination to restore market confidence. “We inherited a crisis of confidence but chose a different path. We’re not turning back.”

His resolute stance signaled Nigeria’s irreversible commitment to financial orthodoxy and stability.

The governor’s vision gained further dimension during a fireside chat with Nobel Prize-winning economist Dr. James Robinson.

During the chat, Cardoso articulated his ambitious mission to transform the CBN into a world-class institution commanding respect on the global stage while delivering excellence at home.

Reinforcing this narrative of renewal, Deputy Governor Muhammad Sani Abdullahi presented compelling evidence of Nigeria’s economic revival, highlighting surging foreign exchange turnover, promising disinflation signals, and strengthening external reserves.

“We’re witnessing the green shoots of recovery,” he remarked. “With our market-determined exchange rate and transparent, rules-based policy framework, international confidence in Nigeria’s economy is unmistakably returning.”

The Adviser to the CBN Governor on stakeholder engagement and strategic communication, Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, described the forum as a watershed moment in Nigeria’s engagement with global markets.

“Today represents more than a conversation, it’s an unprecedented opening of the books on the CBN’s transformation journey under Governor Cardoso,” she declared.

“We’re not just sharing progress; we’re co-creating the roadmap for sustainable partnerships that will unlock Nigeria’s true economic potential.”

Another high point of the forum was the panel discussion “Repricing Nigeria: Assessing the Scope for Sustained Change.” Moderated by Gavin Serkin of New Markets Media & Intelligence.

The star-studded panel featured Joyce Chang of JPMorgan Chase, Jason Rekate of Citi, Razia Khan of Standard Chartered, and Ahmad Zuaiter of Jadara Capital Partners.

The forum further demonstrated Nigeria’s global reach through the participation of distinguished diaspora members Mr. Robert Agbede, Prof. Melvin Ayogu, and Dr. Aloysius Ordu, representing the CBN Board and Monetary Policy Committee.

  • Paschal Message by Patriarch KIRILL of Moscow and All Russia

    Paschal Message
by Patriarch KIRILL of Moscow and All Russia
to the archpastors, pastors, deacons, monastics
and all the faithful children of the Russian Orthodox Church

Beloved in the Lord Most Reverend archpastors, all-honourable presbyters and deacons, God-loving monks and nuns, dear brothers and sisters:

    CHRIST IS RISEN!

It is with these life-affirming words filled with great spiritual power that from the depths of my heart I greet and congratulate you all on the great and radiant feast of Holy Pascha.

It is not fortuitous that church tradition calls this day the “feast of feasts” and the “triumph of triumphs”, for Christ’s Resurrection is the solid foundation of our faith and hope. At the heart of it we find the transformation and renewal of every human being, the light of life everlasting and the fount of constant joy. Christ’s Resurrection has vanquished the most terrible enemies of the human race, which are sin and death, it has torn down the barrier between God and people and delivered us from the power of evil.

Glorifying the Resurrection of the Saviour, a Serbian saint, Bishop Nikolaj (Velimirović) of Ohrid and Žiča, wrote: “Christ’s victory is the sole victory in which all human beings can rejoice, from the first-created to the last. All other victories on earth have divided and continue to divide people… Yet only Christ’s victory can be likened to the sun pouring forth its bright rays upon all those who stand beneath it” (Conversations. The Gospel on the Vanquisher of Death).

This means that every human being who strives for salvation, every believer and follower of Christ, has been granted the opportunity to obtain victory over sin and become, as the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John says, one of the beloved “children of God” (1 John 3.1).

We celebrate Pascha not as a passage from one land to another, even a Promised Land, as the ancient Hebrews celebrated the Old Testament Passover, rejoicing in their liberation from the long years of Egyptian captivity. Our Pascha has a different meaning, for the Lord has delivered us from the “darkness of sin and the shadow of death” (Luke 1.79) and granted to us the kingdom of heaven.

“Out into the light of freedom did Christ lead the despondent captives; to the heavenly heights of Paradise led them He, rejoicing” (Hymn XXXVIII). These inspired words of Saint Ephrem the Syrian express our profound experience of the Paschal mystery, which is the mystery of salvation of the human person from the influence of evil. Evil has not disappeared, yet we have found a way, by the power of God’s grace, of combating and vanquishing it through repentance, prayer and through partaking of the Body and Blood of the Saviour in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. For this reason, we may affirm, along with the Apostle Paul, that “he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to our mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in us” (Romans 8.11).

Christ’s Pascha heralds the passing over from earthly corruption to life eternal with God, to union with our Maker and Redeemer. Thus, as we rejoice in Jesus, who has risen for us, and with thanksgiving “lift up the cup of salvation” (Psalm 116.13) through which the Church gives us the true food and drink of immortality which is the Body and Blood of Christ, we shall tirelessly and without ceasing glorify the Lord with deeds of love and kindness, thereby showing ourselves to be his true disciples.

And although our striving for good and growth in God’s cause may at times seem to be the modest “widow’s mite” (Mark 12.42), let us always try to ensure that our strong faith and hope does not weaken, “because we know that in the Lord our labour is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15.58).

Let us, then, render praise and glory to the Risen Saviour, let us embrace each other with love and let us share the unfading Paschal joy with every person whom God brings to us on our path through life, testifying in word and deed that

    CHRIST HAS RISEN INDEED!

Gov Otu’s exceptional performance has made APC attractive, Oden Ewa says as he welcomes defectors in Ugep

    By Kelvin Obambon

There is no other silver bullet that makes the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River more attractive to members of opposition parties than the exceptional performance and purposeful leadership of the state governor.

This was the view of the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Oden Ewa. He stated this on Saturday 19 April, 2025, when he and other leaders of the APC received hundreds of members of opposition parties that decamped to the APC in Ugep, Yakurr local government area.

According to the Commissioner, people will seek to belong to a Party where there is a clear sense of direction, purpose and visionary leadership which are essential for peace and stability. He said beyond the Party, Governor Bassey Otu has continue to set new benchmark for governance in the state as visibly demonstrated in the incredible achievements recorded just within two years in office.

Oden Ewa stated that those who defected to the APC are people that love the progress and development of Cross River State, hence their defection is a reflection of their support and endorsement of the Governor’s good works.

Everywhere he goes he delivers. And that is what APC, the party you just joined represents. We represent progress, we represent the people,” he said.

  • Drake intensifies legal action against Universal Music group over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’

Canadian-American rapper Drake has gone ahead to intensify legal action against Universal Music Group over Kendrick Lamar’s controversial song titled ‘Not Like Us.’

The talented rapper says that his public image has been severely damaged by Lamar’s Grammy Award win and his recent Super Bowl halftime performance.

Although the specifics of the lawsuit are still under wraps, insiders indicate Drake’s legal team is pursuing damages and may be trying to prevent the song from being distributed on streaming services in the future.

According to sources close to the case, the Canadian rapper is claiming the song contains illegal samples and that UMG may have disregarded or permitted the release despite knowing there could be legal issues.

Since its release, the song has received millions of streams and sparked a renewed discussion on the limits of hip-hop beefs. It is commonly perceived as a direct assault on Drake amid the two rap titans’ ongoing verbal spat.

In January, Drake accused UMG of defaming him by promoting Kendrick Lamar’s diss single, which contains extremely offensive words.

Drake should be put on a local watch list, according to Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics, which call him a “certified pedophile” and a “predator.”
