  • US Supreme Court stops Trump from deporting migrants

The United States Supreme Court has issued a dramatic late-night order blocking President Donald Trump’s controversial use of the centuries-old Alien Enemies Act to deport Venezuelan migrants without due process. The emergency ruling, which came as the administration prepared to carry out additional deportations, halts the use of the 1798 law, last employed during World War II, to expel individuals without giving them a chance to challenge their removal in court.

The justices directed the government not to deport any members of the affected group “until further order.” Notably, two of the court’s most conservative justices dissented from the majority decision, underscoring the divisiveness of the legal maneuver.

Trump recently invoked the Alien Enemies Act to justify the deportation of Venezuelan migrants to a high-security prison in El Salvador known for housing thousands of gang members. Critics have raised alarms that this policy marks a significant overreach and may violate constitutional protections. Many of those targeted have not been charged with crimes and were reportedly identified based on vague associations or even tattoos.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which led the legal challenge, hailed the court’s intervention. “These men were in imminent danger of spending their lives in a horrific foreign prison without ever having had a chance to go to court,” said Lee Gelernt, an attorney with the ACLU.

In response, the federal government filed a motion asking the court to reconsider, insisting it should retain the authority to use the Alien Enemies Act or, at the very least, receive guidance on using alternative laws to proceed with deportations. The administration maintains that those being deported are members of violent gangs, including Tren de Aragua, which Trump has designated a terrorist organization.

The move is part of a wider crackdown by the Trump administration that includes military deployment to the southern border, trade penalties on neighboring countries, and harsh rhetoric portraying migrants as criminals. Trump’s recent actions have extended beyond immigration, targeting institutions like major law firms, universities, and independent media outlets, prompting fears of creeping authoritarianism.

The situation has also drawn international attention. In one high-profile case, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was deported to the CECOT prison in El Salvador under the new policy. The administration later admitted the removal was an “administrative error,” though Trump has continued to label Abrego Garcia a gang member, even sharing a manipulated image suggesting ties to MS-13.

Civil liberties groups and Democratic leaders have voiced deep concern, calling the use of the Alien Enemies Act a grave threat to constitutional rights. Trump’s supporters, however, have largely cheered the deportations, with some far-right influencers openly urging the administration to defy the court’s ruling.

As legal battles intensify and court decisions mount, the clash between executive authority and judicial oversight appears set to become a defining issue in the months leading up to the next election.

  • How Did Joel Die in The Last of Us Season 2?

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2, titled Through The Valley, featured one of the most gut-wrenching sequences from the video game. On the lookout for Joel, Abby is ambushed by a horde of infected and eventually gets saved by the one she wants to kill. Dina calls out Joel by his name in front of Abby, taking her aback, and she immediately crafts a plan to capture him. While the video game fans were somehow prepared for the unfortunate death sequence in TLOU Season 2, we never thought it would happen this early. So, how does Joel die in The Last of Us? Here’s the answer you are looking for.

    Spoiler Warning:

This post includes spoilers for The Last of Us TV show and video game, so please proceed with caution.

Is Joel Really Dead in The Last of Us Season 2?

Image Credit: HBO (via Warner Bros. Discovery/ Liane Hentscher)

Yes, Joel is dead in TLOU Season 2. Abby initially stumbles into him when she is ambushed by a bunch of infected. Abby had never seen Joel, so if it wasn’t for Dina calling out Joel’s name, she wouldn’t have identified him.

The girl pretends to be a helpless kid who needs help, so she asks Dina and Joel to come with her to the place where her group is holed up. However, after reaching there, Abby doesn’t take a lot of time to reveal her true intentions.

While Joel tries to connect with Tommy over the handheld transceiver, Abby’s group holds Dina hostage, making the man realize that something’s not right. Joel and Ellie encountered a plethora of survivalist groups in Season 1, so he initially believed them to be one such group, and that’s why he says, “You wanna rob us? Fine, take what you want.” Later, he discovers the truth when Abby tells him that he is responsible for her loss, as Joel killed her father in the Fireflies HQ in Salt Lake City.

Abby wanted to kill him slowly, so she shoots him in the leg first and then shares her true intentions with Joel. After that, she slowly beats the life out of Joel with a golf club, ultimately putting an end to Pedro Pascal’s role in the series. And you know what’s the real kicker, Abby kills Joel right in front of Ellie’s eyes by sticking the broken end of the golf club in Joel’s neck. This was a brutal and heart-wrenching scene that wasn’t shown as vividly in the video game.

How Does Joel Die in the TLOU Part 2 Game?

Video game adaptations usually make some significant changes to the original story, and TLOU is no different. While staying mostly faithful to the video game, the television series altered some events, adding more emotional drama to the story.

First of all, Joel’s death takes place within 2-3 hours in the game, and The Last of Us Season 2 adapted it in the second episode of Season 2, so the HBO series gave us an extended period to watch our beloved Pedro Pascal as Joel on our screens. Secondly, Joel wasn’t with Dina when he crossed paths with Abby and her group in the game; instead, he was with his brother, Tommy.

The brothers protected her from falling prey to the infected and took her to the lodge, where her group took cover. Like the TV show, Abby comes clear in front of Joel and shoots him in the leg before beating him to death with the golf club. Even though Ellie arrives at the location, she can’t do anything to protect her surrogate father as he succumbs to the fatal blows Abby released on him.

How do you feel about the gut-wrenching scene in the latest episode of TLOU Season 2? Do let us know in the comments below.

  • Hisbah Denies Assault On Katsina Lady Accused Of ‘Immoral Dressing’

The Katsina State Hisbah Board has dismissed a report of alleged assault on a lady, Hauwa’u Lawal, by its personnel.

Malam Mohammad Shu’aibu, the Deputy Commander General Operations of the board, gave the clarifications at a news conference on Sunday in Katsina.

Lawal, in a viral video clip, accused the operatives of the board of beating her that caused a fracture on her leg and injuries impairing her hearing ability.

The lady said that the incident occurred when she visited her brother, who was in the custody of the board.

In a swift reaction, Shu’aibu confirmed the arrest of one suspect, who is a brother to the lady.

He said the suspect was arrested for interfering with the operation of the operatives while on duty, and parading himself as a soldier.

“She was stopped from going in because of the nature of her immoral dressing, but she insisted and attempted to slap one of the personnel.

“The suspect (the brother) also presented an identity card which expired in 2023, carrying Ex-boy.

“During an operation at one of the event centres in Katsina city, some youths hurled stones at the personnel, where the suspect described them as unprofessional.

“The personnel while trying to calm the situation, asked the suspect to identify himself, and he claimed to be a soldier, which at the end we realised he was not.

“Also, an x-ray of the fractured leg has been requested from the suspect’s family to prove their claims, but none is yet to be presented to the board,” he said.

Shu’aibu said the board was mandated to fight immortality in the society, adding that it also trained its personnel to be civil, disciplined and professionals in discharging their duties.

Also commenting, Hadiza Yar’Adua, Commissioner for Women Affairs, said the ministry was investigating the matter.

“Once the investigation is complete, we will forward our findings to the relevant authorities for appropriate action,” she said.

  • South Africa’s Deputy President escapes assassination as gunmen open gunfire on his bulletproof car

According to reports, the deputy president’s car was struck by gunfire on the windscreen multiple times during the attack. Mashatile’s spokesperson, Keith Khoza, confirmed that the deputy president was inside the vehicle when the shooting occurred. “We can confirm that there was an incident in which the car of the deputy president was hit,” Khoza said.

  • Who Is Abby’s Father in the Last of Us Season 2?

The sequel to The Last of Us Part 1 video game brought in a lot of new characters who pushed the narrative forward. Among them, Jerry Anderson, Abby’s father, was the pivotal character whose encounter with Joel forever changed the course of history in the TLOU universe. If you’re currently watching The Last of Us Season 2 on TV and wondering who Abby’s father is in the series, discover the details about his character here.

    Spoiler Warning:

This article contains spoilers for Jerry Anderson’s character in The Last of Us Part 2 game and season 2 of the TV show. So, proceed with caution.

Who Is Abby’s Father in The Last of Us?

To everyone’s surprise, Abby’s father was revealed to be the chief surgeon of the Fireflies whom Joel killed to save Ellie. His name is Gerald Anderson, but he’s more commonly known as Jerry in the TLOU series.

Jerry was the head doctor at St. Mary’s Hospital, operated by the Fireflies. He aimed to discover a cure for the Cordyceps Brain Infection (CBI), which led to the existence of many different kinds of infected creatures in the world.

Jerry Anderson’s Origins in The Last of Us

Before the Cordyceps fungus outbreak, Jerry was a biology graduate from Northern Utah Medical University. However, once the zombie pandemic started, Jerry decided to team up with the Fireflies organization to help search for a cure for the infection. During this time, Jerry has a daughter with an unknown character, and Abby also becomes a part of the Fireflies.

Jerry was a highly proficient medical professional and trained Mel, one of Abby’s friends. Therefore, Jerry was established as the only character who had the highest chance of finding a cure for the CBI.

    What Happened to Abby’s Father?

As the lead doctor, Jerry was in charge of coming up with a cure to save humanity. However, the only way to do this was to obtain the fungus inside Ellie’s brain, which would result in Ellie’s death.

Even though Abby’s father was empathetic, he had to make this sacrifice for the greater good. Thus, he convinced Marlene and proceeded with the operation.

I won’t let you take her. This is our future, think of all the lives we’ll save – Jerry Anderson

As we know from the events of the first part, Joel interrupted the surgical procedure. Jerry tried to threaten him with a scalpel and emphasized that the cure made out of Ellie could save millions of lives. However, Joel ended up shooting Abby’s father in the head and killing him, as there was no other way to save Ellie in such an emotionally charged situation.

Jerry Anderson’s death was the foundation for the sequel, as the loss of her father would later drive Abby to search for Joel and avenge his dad by killing him.

We still don’t know who will play the role of Abby’s father in the upcoming TLOU Season 2. But we will update this post as more details about his character emerge. Until then, what is your opinion on Jerry’s decision to kill Ellie for a cure? Let us know in the comments below.

  • PDP Charges Leaders To Rededicate Themselves To Selfless Service

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged leaders at all levels to rededicate themselves to selfless service to the people.

In a goodwill message on the occasion of the Easter celebrations, the party also urged Nigerians to use the Easter season to renew their hope in God’s unwavering love and His divine intervention in the nation’s affairs.

The party, in a statement on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, highlighted God’s saving grace over the string of adverse circumstances bedeviling the nation and its people.

The party urged the people to renew their determination and hope for the much-desired national rebirth, “as solution for the quagmires of hardship, insecurity and uncertainty pervading the nation under the anti-people All Progressives Congress administration.”

“The coming of Easter must also redirect us as a nation to the imperatives of the virtues of forgiveness, forbearance, mutual respect, obedience to the rule of law and love for one another without regard to sectional, tribal, religious or political considerations, as this is the only way our nation can survive these perilous times.

“Our party charges all leaders at all levels, sectors and spheres to use the occasion for deeper introspection and rededicate themselves to a life of selfless service and pursuit of the good of the people as exemplified in the life, teachings, sacrificial death and triumphant resurrection ofJesus Christ to bring redemption to mankind.

  • Warriors’ Draymond Green named Defensive Player of the Year finalist

HOUSTON – Warriors big man Draymond Green is a finalist for the 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year award.

The NBA announced Sunday before the Warriors’ series opener against the Rockets that Green was in the running for the award alongside Cleveland’s Evan Mobley and Atlanta’s Dyson Daniels.

Green, 35, averaged 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game in the regular season. He was named the Western Conference’s Defensive Player of the Month for March.

During Green’s strong play in March, Warriors coach Steve Kerr compared Green to two of his former Chicago Bulls teammates during the 1990s.

“You can see the parallels, the length, the physicality, and ultimately it’s up here, it’s the brain, and Dennis Rodman and Scottie Pippen were the two smartest defenders I’ve ever been around, and Draymond is amazing in that regard,” Kerr said.

The versatile big man is an eight-time All-Defensive team selection and won the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year award.
