  • The power of ‘Alleluia’ for both Christians and Jews

The return of our “Alleluia” is just days away.

Outside Lent, it’s sung or recited before the Gospel at Mass. But then it goes away for our 40 days of fasting.

It’s just a single word, and it’s so commonly used that we hardly notice it. But it is significant because the Jews of Jesus’ time associated the word primarily with the great feast of Passover — the time each year when they renewed their ancient covenant with God.

The early Church so valued the word that it was left untranslated in biblical and liturgical texts (see Revelation 19:1–6). Like the Hebrew “Amen,” it was considered sacred for what it expressed. Alleluia (or hallelujah) means, literally, “Praise the Lord!” It represents the dominant theme of a group of the Psalms (113–118) that are distinctive for the effusive honor they give to the Almighty for his deeds of creation and redemption. They are collectively called the Hallel, which is Hebrew for “praise.”

On Passover, these festive biblical hymns were sung at table during the seder meal. The ritual divided them into two groupings, one long (the Great Hallel) and the other relatively short (the Little Hallel).

According to the Mishnah, there was, in the first century, a dispute over which Psalms should constitute these groupings. The school of the rabbi Shammai prescribed Psalm 113 alone as the Little Hallel, but the school of the rabbi Hillel paired 113 with 114. We do not know which grouping was favored by Jesus and his disciples.

In any event, the Little Hallel was sung before the dinner began. The Great Hallel, the long sequence of Psalms 115 through 118, was sung with the Fourth Cup. This is the “hymn” that Jesus and the 11 sang as they left the upper room and walked to the Garden of Gethsemane.

The Catholic Church, in its meal of covenant renewal, sometimes employs one or another of the Hallel Psalms as a reading. But it preserves the spirit of these Passover songs in the Alleluia recited or sung before the Gospel.

In Lent, the Church suppresses the Alleluia. Why? Because Lent is a season of preparation for the Christian Passover: Easter. When Catholics (in the West especially) turn the calendar page from Lent to Easter, the word Alleluia does not merely return to its normal place before the Gospel; rather, it saturates the prayers of the Mass for the entire 50-day Easter Season. For Christians, as for the Jews of Jesus’ time — and Jesus himself — Alleluia is the phrase most characteristic of the Passover. In the words beloved by St. Pope John Paul II: “We are an Easter people, and [therefore] alleluia is our song.”

This issue of Angelus appears on Good Friday, when our Alleluia is so close we can almost taste it. When we sing it this Easter Season, let’s sing it with gusto.

  • New docu-series exploring the lives of criminal barristers premieres tonight

Essential viewing for criminal bar hopefuls

A new Channel 4 documentary series, airing tonight, offers viewers a rare glimpse into the criminal bar as it follows barristers from leading chambers handling cases ranging from murder and drug conspiracies to motoring offences.

Barristers: Fighting For Justice follows defence barristers over three episodes, giving viewers an insight into the challenges facing the criminal bar — all while bewigged lawyers prepare for high-stakes trial advocacy. Filmed over four years with “unparalleled access” to the lawyers, Barristers was originally announced as The Defenders in 2021.

The first episode features two barristers from London set 25 Bedford Row — Matthew Radstone and Leon-Nathan Lynch. Radstone’s client is a cab driver accused of transporting £1 million cocaine in an international drugs conspiracy. Lynch, meanwhile, defends a client in an alleged knifepoint carjacking — apparently staged for insurance fraud — all the while his co-accused has a different story.

In future episodes, cases concern a gangland murder, a speeding charge, deportation, a man having bitten another person’s ear off, county lines drugs gangs, and a 15-year-old who is charged with the murder.

Radstone and Lynch are not the only barristers on screen — the series will include barristers from other sets like Great James Street Chambers.

The criminal bar is still facing serious challenges. Financial pressures and mental strain are driving lawyers away, with as many as a third considering leaving the profession altogether.

Documentaries like this aim to offer a rare, insider’s view of the justice system. As Lynch puts it in a LinkedIn post: “If you think it’s not your thing — watch it anyway. You never know when the law might find you wanting…”

Barristers: Fighting for Justice airs its first episode tonight (Tuesday) on Channel 4 at 10pm.

  • Mystery of Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell’s de@th is solved as coroner concludes investigation

Arsenal and Everton legend, Kevin Campbell d!ed from natural causes after becoming seriously ill with severe heart and kidney failure, a coroner has concluded.

Mr Campbell died aged 54 at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) on June 15 last year following drastic weight loss.

Campbell, who still holds the record as the player who scored the most Premier League goals without winning a full international cap for his country, shed over 10 stone in the four months prior to his de@th on June 15 last year.

Mr Campbell was said to be fit and healthy until January 2024, when he was first admitted to hospital.

Mystery of Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell

Manchester Coroner’s Court heard he was ‘desperately unwell’ when he arrived at MRI for what ended up being a seven week stay, during which time his weight crashed from 19st 7lbs to 15st 6lbs.

Upon arrival, he was taken to intensive care where doctors discovered that he had suffered a stroke, caused by a blood clot on his heart, which was causing kidney failure and liver damage.

Medics investigated whether some kind of viral infection might have caused this, perhaps picked up on the ex-player’s recent holiday in Papua New Guinea, though that proved not to be the case.

An inquest in Manchester heard tests showed he was suffering from severe heart and kidney failure but following treatment, including dialysis, he was deemed healthy enough to be discharged.

MRI consultant pathologist Dr Robert Henney told the inquest: ‘When Mr Campbell came in, he was already desperately unwell.’

He added: ‘Many people would not have survived to point he did. His physical fitness allowed him to get that ill before being admitted.’

After kidney dialysis treatment Mr Campbell’s condition improved, and he was discharged in early March.

‘He told the physios that he was managing ok and looking after himself in the ward,’ Dr Henney said.

By the time Campbell was readmitted two months later on May 17, his weight was down to 9st 4lbs – meaning he had lost more than half his body weight in only four months.

The hospital’s consultant physician Professor Peter Shelby told the inquest: ‘Why was it that a man who a few months before was a picture of health had so suddenly deteriorated? There should have been a little more curiosity.’

His health continued to deteriorate as further investigations and tests in early June confirmed a diagnosis of infective endocarditis. Medical treatment then continued until his death from multiple organ failure.

Coroner Zak Golombek found a delay in the diagnosis of a rare heart infection ‘did not more than minimally contribute’ to the sporting star’s tragic early demise.

Mr Golombek said the ex-footballer was ‘very unwell’ at that stage and medics felt there was some continuation of the heart and kidney failure, with signs of an infection of unknown cause.

An internal probe by the hospital accepted the infection – caused by bacteria entering the blood and travelling to the heart – could have been diagnosed earlier and that ‘more curiosity’ should have been shown by clinicians over his significant weight loss.

But the inquest was also told that Mr. Campbell would ‘almost certainly’ not been been fit enough to undertake ‘high risk’ open-heart surgery if the infection had been detected earlier during his final admission.

Prof Selby said: ‘We are not talking about simple surgery. People would have concluded that surgery was nothing other than taking a fatal option.’

The inquest heard there was no evidence the infection – said to be ‘difficult’ to identify – was present during his first hospital admission or at a follow-up outpatient appointment with a cardiologist on April 26.

Recording a conclusion of death by natural causes, Mr Golombek said: ‘While it is my finding that there was delay in diagnosing infected endocarditis during that second admission to hospital, it also my finding that the delay did not more than minimally contribute to Kevin’s death on the balance of probabilities.

‘Kevin died from a naturally occurring illness which very sadly on June 15 reached its natural end.’

Giving evidence, MRI consultant Dr Robert Henney said: ‘Unfortunately, he had two completely separate and unrelated insults to his heart in a short space of time, so he was desperately unlucky.’

Harold Campbell told the hearing that his brother was the family ‘superstar’.

He said: ‘Kevin was very loved as a football professional, in the media and especially by the fans of the clubs he played for. He was very, very loved by everyone.

‘From a family point of view, he was our superstar from his start in football at 13 years old.

‘Everyone loved him, not only as a professional footballer but as a normal person. His football career was successful but after his retirement, I think everyone sort of got more in tune with his personality – a normal person and he was very, very loved.’

Mr Campbell scored 59 goals in 224 games for Arsenal and, alongside the 1990/91 league title, he also won the FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup at Highbury.

He spent three years at Nottingham Forest after joining them in 1995 and had a one-season stop at Trabzonspor in Turkey before moving to Everton in 1999.

He stayed at Everton until 2005, where he spent time as captain under Walter Smith, and ended his career with spells at West Brom and Cardiff.

  • BREAKING: Terrorists Kill Former Local Government Administrator, Three Others In Zamfara, Abduct Several Residents

Terrorists on Monday night launched a deadly attack on Morai town in the Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing a former local government sole administrator, Saminu Morai, and three others.

Several residents were also abducted during the invasion, SaharaReporters learnt.

A resident of the community who spoke with SaharaReporters confirmed the attack and described it as brutal and shocking.

“Bandit attack Morai town in Talata Mafara local government of Zamfara state, killed former Talata Mafara local government sole administrator and 3 others. Many people were kidnapped,” the source said.

He added that the attack took place late Monday night, throwing the entire town into chaos.

“The name of the administrator is Saminu Morai. The attacked happened last night,” the source explained.

The killings have since drawn the attention of traditional and local authorities, as both the Emir of Talata Mafara and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the area reportedly attended the burial of the victims.

“And Emir of Talata Mafara together with DPO of Talata Mafara attended the funeral,” the source added.

SaharaReporters learned that the victims were buried in accordance with Islamic rites shortly after the attack.

As of when this report was filed, the Zamfara State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the incident. It also remains unclear how many people were kidnapped or the exact number of assailants involved.

Zamfara State has been one of the most volatile regions in northern Nigeria, with incessant attacks by armed groups, locally referred to as bandits, who carry out killings, mass abductions, and raids on rural communities with little resistance.

Monday’s attack adds to the growing toll of casualties in a state where residents continue to live under fear and helplessness as security forces struggle to contain the menace of terrorism.

  • Why Did York Betray Vegapunk in One Piece? Explained

The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies, right? The past few One Piece arcs featured a traitor on the protagonist’s side. The latest traitor is York, one of Dr. Vegapunk satellites, in the Egghead arc. So, the question is — why did one of the greatest scientific minds turn into a traitor? What was the reason behind York’s betrayal? One Piece fans have been left puzzled by York’s motives in One Piece. So, let’s discuss York’s ultimate betrayal plan and why she betrayed Dr. Vegapunk.

    Spoiler Warning:

This post includes major spoilers for the One Piece manga and anime, so proceed with caution.

York’s Role and the Ultimate Betrayal in One Piece

Image Credit: Toei Animation (via X/@OnePieceAnime)

Dr. Vegapunk, aka Stella, split his body into six satellites to continue his research and work more efficiently. Each of the six bodies represented a distinct aspect of Dr. Vegapunk’s emotion. York is one of the six satellites, and she embodies the greed aspect. Also, York took care of the basic needs of the other satellites, such as eating food, sleeping, and more, including herself.

York was seen as more of a lazy person and not many fans considered her to be the traitor when things started to get shady during the Egghead incident. In reality, York was indeed the traitor as she sold her soul to the World Government. She betrayed Stella by snitching to the World Government about Vegapunk’s research on the Void Century and Poneglyphs.

York also stole part of the Mother Flame and handed it over to the Five Elders to prove where her loyalty lay. This part of the Mother Flame was used to annihilate the Lulusia Kingdom. Moreover, she kidnapped Cipher Pol agents and locked them up to keep raising suspicions about Vegapunk. York succeeded in betraying her creator, but if you are wondering why she does all of this, check out the reason below.

The Reason Why York Betrayed Vegapunk in One Piece

The simple answer is that York represents the greed aspect of Dr Vegapunk and her greediness got the better of her. She dislikes her current life and aspires to become a God. That’s why she sold the forbidden information and sent a portion of the Mother Flame to the World Government to secure the position of a Celestial Dragon.

The Gorosei, aka the Five Elders, initially plan to assassinate York along with the other satellites of Vegapunk. Later, they changed their mind as they wanted York to deliver more of the Mother Flame for them. In the end, York was also one of the last surviving satellites of Vegapunk, along with Lilith. However, it was later revealed that Vegapunk’s satellites survived in a surprising way.

Currently, York’s whereabouts remain unknown but she is predicted to have been rescued by the World Government after the Egghead incident.

How Did Vegapunk Find Out About York’s Plan?

From the readings of the Mother Flame power station and the data stored in Punk Records, Dr. Vegapunk eventually realized there was a traitor among them. Only Shaka and Pythagoras had a perfect alibi, so naturally, they suspected the rest of them, including Lilith, Atlas, and York.

Later, they discovered that York was the culprit as she was importing false memories into Punk Records. After learning that the wrath of the World Government would hit soon, Vegapunk made plans for the greater good, including sacrificing his precious life.

He recorded a lengthy message revealing the truth regarding the Void Century, Joy Boy, Ancient Weapons, and more. The old Einstein look-alike also deleted his memories along with Shaka and Pythagoras so that York wouldn’t find out that they had learned about her betrayal. You can learn about Vegapunk’s sacrifice to unveil the truth to the world.

With that said, do you think Vegapunk made a mistake when he created a satellite based on his greed? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Atiku’s 2027 candidacy could spell the end of PDP: Bode George warns

Member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has issued a stark warning against the possible emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday night, George did not mince words: “If he (Atiku) picks it (PDP’s ticket), that is the end of this party. If he picks it by manipulation, which was what was done the last time, we will not accept it.”

Atiku, the PDP’s standard-bearer in the 2023 elections, has been a recurring figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, having contested for the presidency six times across different political platforms. Despite losing to incumbent President Bola Tinubu in the last election, Atiku has remained politically active, most recently leading efforts to forge a coalition of opposition forces aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

That coalition, unveiled on March 20, 2025, brought together prominent figures including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Read Also: Rivers: Pro-Wike women march for emergency rule, demand Fubara’s exit

The alliance is banking on the combined electoral strength of Atiku and Obi, who together garnered over 12 million votes in 2023 surpassing Tinubu’s winning tally by over four million.

But George, an influential voice within the PDP, remains unimpressed by Atiku’s moves. He praised the party’s governors for distancing themselves from the coalition and reaffirmed the need for internal stability and fairness.

“I applaud our governors for putting on their thinking caps,” he said. “They saw through the self-serving nature of this so-called coalition. Atiku has not acted like a leader. A true party leader would have stepped in to resolve the internal crisis we’re facing.”

He further argued that Atiku’s presidential ambition does not align with the PDP’s long-standing zoning arrangement. Citing the party’s constitution, George said rotational presidency remains a non-negotiable principle.

“There are rules—Section 7, Subsection 3C of our constitution clearly states that after eight years in the North, power should return to the South,” he said. “We’ve had eight years under President Buhari from the North. It’s time for the South. Is Atiku from the South-West, South-South, or South-East?”

While he acknowledged Atiku’s constitutional right to contest under any platform, George was adamant that the PDP must field a southern candidate if it hopes to reclaim power in 2027.

“I don’t want Tinubu to return, but I also don’t want this party to go down because of one man’s ambition. We must present a credible southern candidate who can truly unify and revive the PDP.”

  • Andre Onana’s future revealed – centredevils

Manchester United’s Europa League hopes are now on a knife edge after a disappointing first-leg draw against Lyon exposed yet more flaws in their defence and goalkeeping.

Ruben Amorim’s decision to drop his starting goalkeeper was a bold call that drew both praise and confusion from fans and pundits alike.

With Thursday’s return leg looming, Amorim has already hinted that his number one might return – not necessarily by choice, but by default, following another howler-filled performance from his backup.

The pressure is only building at Old Trafford, with United not only battling for European glory but also fighting behind the scenes to balance the books amid looming profit and sustainability constraints.

As it turns out, Andre Onana’s situation off the pitch has become just as turbulent as his performances on it.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper has reportedly been left shocked after learning of a wage cut triggered by United’s failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

According to The Athletic, the 29-year-old approached now-departed sporting director Dan Ashworth about the salary reduction, which he hadn’t anticipated.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Onana, whose erratic form reached a new low last week in France, with two costly errors that gifted Lyon their goals in a 2-2 draw.

That performance led Ruben Amorim to omit Onana entirely from the squad for the Newcastle clash, citing the need for the goalkeeper to “disconnect.”

Andre Onana signed for United last summer for £43.8million, and with four years left on his contract, the club have amortised the fee, valuing him at around £26million.

But even that price looks like a stretch, with no club likely to match it after a season where Onana has made nine errors directly leading to goals – the most in the Premier League.

United’s financial situation makes selling the goalkeeper for less than his book value a risky option, meaning a loan deal might be the only escape route this summer.

Andre Onana has faced savage criticism in recent weeks, including from former United man Nemanja Matic, who labelled him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in club history.

The keeper clapped back defiantly, but after his nightmare against Lyon, the jokes are beginning to write themselves.

Aaron Ramsdale is now being considered as a potential replacement, according to The Sun, with United eyeing a reshuffle between the sticks ahead of next season.

Whether Onana gets the nod to redeem himself against Lyon or not, Thursday night could be make or break – not just for United, but for a keeper who looks increasingly out of place at Old Trafford.

  • Incoming German govt from hell enthusiastically promises to make everything more expensive

Today an infuriating man came to my Dresden apartment to replace the old analog water meters with new digital ones, which send radio signals and can therefore be read from a distance. I owe the inconvenience to a traffic light “digitisation” law: On the one hand, the new meters promise more convenience for residents, who can now forget about annual meter-reading appointments; on the other hand, they open new possibilities for climatist surveillance, as building managers may now warn residents between billing periods about their excessive energy consumption and in this way save the earth.

Anyway, the guy they sent for this task plainly had no idea what he was doing. He took forever, made an insane amount of noise, spilled water everywhere and cut his finger. He also smelled terrible and looked like he had just arrived from some leftoid collective housing project.

All of this is to say that my day began poorly and this post will be a little under-digested in consequence. I mainly want to draw your attention to three ominous things about the incoming CDU/SPD government:

    1) They are planning to borrow billions and they enjoy some of the highest tax rates in the entire EU, but they still don’t have enough money:

…[T]he new coalition government has ambitious spending plans… Various economic institutes, including the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW) and the German Institute for Economic Research … calculate a funding gap of around 50 billion Euros in view of these plans.

Business tax incentives, ambitions to reduce electricity price cuts via more tax fiddling, CSU plans to expand pension benefits for mothers and VAT reductions for the gastronomy sector are just some of the things they want to do that are projected to cost billions and billions. Meanwhile, “the list of possible additional revenue sources and savings seems less ambitious.” Through 2028, the budgetary shortfall is estimated to reach around 50 billion Euros. The plan right now is to hope that the economy magically takes off and tax revenues rise by themselves, but even if that were to happen (it won’t), “16 billion Euros would remain uncovered.” The traffic light coalition (ER: previous government under Scholz) had to wait for the constitutional court to blow their budget apart, but the present government does not really have a viable budget at all. I put the chances that they see 2029 at less than 50%.

    2) They are furthermore planning to continue making all of us poorer via the redistributionist social welfare state:

In an amazing interview with the Bild am Sonntag yesterday, Chancellor-hopeful Friedrich Merz confirmed that “many workers will have less net income … in the coming years” due to social welfare contributions – particularly pension, health insurance and long-term care insurance payments. He also openly admitted that his party, the CDU, had failed to secure the tax relief for workers on which they had campaigned, because of “disagreement” with the Social Democrats. And when the interviewer asked him to confirm again that this means Germans “will … have less net income … because social welfare contributions are rising, but taxes are not falling,” Merz agreed that “these concerns are certainly not unjustified.” Then he said hastily – as if he were not altogether convinced of it himself – that he hoped his party could turn things around somehow in the coming years. This will of course not happen, there is no way it can happen, because of point 1) above.

    3) They are committed to massively increasing energy prices as part of their project to alter the composition of the earth’s atmosphere:

Yesterday, on Caren Miosga’s godforsaken talkshow, Merz enthused about how he hoped to make oil and gas less affordable for ordinary Germans. He just sat there in his retarded little chair and repeated the phrase “more expensive” over and over.

It was insane, I have never seen anything like it.

To begin with, these things will become more expensive for everyone. And that is a mechanism that we have jointly agreed on, the carbon pricing – which, by the way, does not only come from Germany, but also from Europe…

We have decided to deal with carbon emissions not with unnecessary bureaucracy and regulation, but with sensible incentives. CO2 will become more expensive. If protecting the environment and the climate is important to us, then it will become more expensive … It will gradually become more expensive because we simply want to make it that way. We have two sectors in our country that are particularly important for the climate. These are transport and … home heating. And those will become more expensive. Yes, it will become more expensive so that people have an incentive to use it sparingly, to install economical heating systems, to drive carbon-neutral vehicles. That is our method …

So, to review: Merz’s government does not have nearly enough money to do all the things they are planning to do, despite the fact that no other German government in the history of the Federal Republic has had access to so much debt and revenue. What Merz’s government especially cannot do is lower taxes or restrain our increasingly unfundable and out-of-control social welfare state in any way. What they most especially want to do is make driving our cars and heating our apartments as expensive as possible.

This is going to be the shittiest government Germany has ever had, and they’re not even trying to pretend otherwise.

There is this whole tone of resignation and defeat, while the Union parties (ER: Merz’s CDU and the CSU) tank in the polls and Merz finds his favourability ratings chasing those of his disgraced predecessor.
