  • Black Babies Are Still Dying—And America Let It Happen

By Stacy M. Brown, Senior National Correspondent

A sweeping new analysis of U.S. mortality data over the past 70 years reveals that Black children in the United States have consistently faced significantly higher mortality rates than their white peers, with no improvement in relative disparities since the 1950s. The study, published March 25 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, documents more than half a million avoidable infant deaths and nearly 690,000 childhood deaths among Black Americans between 1950 and 2019. Conducted by researchers from Harvard, Yale, and other institutions, the study found that while life expectancy and overall mortality rates have improved for both Black and white Americans, the mortality gap among infants and children has widened. In the 1950s, Black infants died at a rate of 5,181 per 100,000 compared to 2,703 per 100,000 among white infants—an excess mortality ratio of 1.92. By the 2010s, the rate had declined to 1,073 per 100,000 for Black infants and 499 per 100,000 for white infants, yet the disparity grew to a mortality ratio of 2.15. “These trends show a disturbing persistence of racial inequities in childhood survival,” the authors wrote. “Despite medical advancements and public health initiatives, Black children in the U.S. are still twice as likely to die before adulthood as their white counterparts.”

Over the seven-decade span, the study estimated 5.02 million excess deaths and 173.6 million years of life lost among Black Americans that would not have occurred if their mortality rates matched those of white Americans. Children under 20 accounted for 13.7% of these deaths, with infants representing 10.4%. The leading causes of excess deaths varied by age. Among children under five, perinatal conditions were the primary cause, while external causes such as homicides and accidents dominated among those aged 5 to 19. For adults, circulatory system diseases contributed the most to the mortality gap. The study emphasized that these disparities are rooted in a long history of systemic racism and structural inequities. Factors such as housing segregation, unequal access to health care, and socioeconomic disadvantages have all played a role. Today, Donald Trump’s presidency has brought a wave of executive actions, judicial appointments, and public rhetoric that emboldened racist systems and undermined civil rights protections. From ending consent decrees with police departments to attempting to ban diversity training in federal agencies, Trump’s actions have intensified the already disproportionate suffering of Black Americans.

Civil rights leaders had warned of this dangerous second term—one where Project 2025 and other radical policy blueprints have further dismantled protections for marginalized communities, including Black children. Even before this moment, Black America has endured the weight of systemic racism, beginning with centuries of enslavement and extending through segregation, redlining, police brutality, environmental racism, and inequitable access to health care. Meanwhile, the new study identifies the long-standing effects of these forces—including discriminatory housing policies, employment, and criminal justice inequities, and biased medical care—as primary drivers of the mortality gap. “Being Black in the United States remains associated with less wealth, lower income, and diminished access to health services,” the researchers noted. “These conditions directly impact health outcomes and mortality risk, especially among children.”

Although Black life expectancy has risen from 60.5 years in the 1950s to 76.0 in the 2010s—surpassing the 13% gain seen among white Americans—the lost years of life remain staggering. In the 2010s alone, Black Americans lost 20.6 million years of life due to higher death rates. The study calls for urgent policy interventions to address these disparities, including expanded access to quality health care, targeted public health initiatives, and structural reforms to reduce socioeconomic inequities. The authors also advocate for greater healthcare quality outcomes and data reporting transparency. “Nearly 690,000 Black children who died since 1950 could have survived if given the same chance as white children,” the researchers concluded. “That reality should be a call to action for this nation.” The study did not examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which researchers noted has likely exacerbated existing disparities. They indicated that more recent data may reveal even greater gaps in health outcomes. “Until the structural causes of these inequities are addressed,” they wrote, “Black children in America will continue to face unjust risks to their lives.”

  • Manchester United miss out on Antony penalty clause

Manchester United’s January decision to loan out Antony to Real Betis has now cost the club a potential financial boost.

The Brazilian winger, signed by United for £82 million from Ajax in 2022, has rediscovered his form since moving to Spain.

Antony’s struggles at Old Trafford saw him fall out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

Which ended up in the eventual move of his temporary switch to Betis.

As part of the loan arrangement, Real Betis agreed to cover 84% of Antony’s £140,000-a-week salary.

The deal also included a performance-related clause designed to protect United financially.

According to ABC Sevilla, Betis would have been required to pay United a penalty fee of €560,000 (£479,000) if Antony failed to reach 15 appearances.

However, the 25-year-old has now hit that target, meaning United have missed out on the additional payment.

Antony’s revival in Spain has seen him score four goals and provide four assists across those 15 appearances.

His performances have impressed Betis – the Brazilian has broke records already in Spain.

The Spanish club are now reportedly preparing talks with United over a potential permanent transfer.

Antony himself has expressed a strong desire to remain in La Liga beyond the end of the season.

Reflecting on his fresh start, Antony said: “The most important thing is that I have found myself again.”

He added: “I am happy to be enjoying myself every day.

“Things go well when we are well, happy, content… in four games I scored three goals and gave an assist.”

The winger also spoke openly about the mental and physical preparation behind his turnaround.

“I have worked mentally and physically to get to this moment. I am very happy about that.”

Antony admitted that game time was limited at Manchester United but remains thankful for the experience.

“I wasn’t playing much, but I’ve been working hard. I needed to be happy with myself.”

He continued: “The best version of being happy with myself is the most important thing.

“I played very little in Manchester, but I’m grateful to them and also to the coach, who spoke to me.”

Antony also revealed how ex-Betis players helped influence his move.

“I have a lot of friends who played here and they left me very calm so that I could sign here.”

Looking back on his Manchester United spell, Antony added: “I’ve had a great time in Manchester too, I won two titles and I’m very grateful.”

With Betis now keen to keep Antony and the winger pushing for a permanent stay, United’s focus will shift to negotiations once the season concludes.

  • Study reveals mechanisms behind decomposition of concrete in road tunnels

When seawater enters road tunnels, bacteria form biofilms on the concrete. These biofilms feed on the concrete, making it porous and prone to damage. This process, known as ‘saltwater intrusion,’ can lead to costly repairs and safety risks, as concrete and stones might fall from the tunnel roof.

A recent study by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden has uncovered the microbiological mechanisms behind this rapid concrete breakdown. Their findings show how the degradation progresses unexpectedly fast in tunnels surrounded by seawater, like those in the Oslofjord.

Since 2014, researchers studying the Oslofjord tunnel have observed that bacteria can erode up to one centimeter of concrete annually. When a saltwater intrusion occurs, biofilms develop on the concrete, gradually dissolving its surface.

This phenomenon has been explored in projects connected to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration in collaboration with Sweden’s Transport Administration. Researchers believe this issue is likely present in similar saltwater environments globally.

As concrete in tunnels ages, its pH decreases due to natural chemical processes, creating a favorable environment for bacteria. These bacteria metabolize elements like iron, manganese, sulfur, and nitrogen from the concrete, accelerating the corrosion of its reinforcement and the concrete’s breakdown. Researchers have observed that bacterial penetration can reach up to 10 cm within five years under extreme conditions.

Britt-Marie Wilén, a professor at Chalmers University, emphasized that biofilms serve as a warning sign. She recommended monitoring water flow and the spread of biofilms and repairing damaged concrete by respraying when needed.

Although road tunnels with biofilms remain safe under Norwegian authorities’ monitoring, researchers recommend ongoing measures to ensure stability. These include regularly measuring the concrete’s pH, studying groundwater flow, and observing biofilm spread. Slow groundwater flow lowers the biofilm’s pH, accelerating concrete degradation, while higher flow helps neutralize the acid in the biofilm.

While this research focused on Norway’s Oslofjord tunnel, similar concrete degradation might occur in other tunnels where freshwater infiltrates the concrete.

Chalmers researchers have uncovered previously unknown microorganisms by studying the microbial communities in the Oslofjord tunnel. With advancements in DNA sequencing and data processing techniques, they now have groundbreaking ways to analyze and interpret these findings, opening new doors to understanding microbial activity in such environments.

  • Hungary Hit by Possible Biological Attack Involving Foot-and-Mouth Disease

    According to Reuters:

Hungary on Thursday suggested a “biological attack” as a possible source of the country’s first foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in more than half a century, which has triggered border closures and the mass slaughter of cattle in the northwest.

Animal health authorities had made checks at nearly 1,000 farms across Hungary by Thursday, with only four in the affected northwestern region returning positive results.

“At this stage, we can say that it cannot be ruled out that the virus was not of natural origin, we may be dealing with an artificially engineered virus,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas told a media briefing.

He also said that suspicion was based on verbal information received from a foreign laboratory and that their findings have not yet been fully proven and documented.

Foot-and-mouth disease poses no danger to humans but causes fever and mouth blisters in cloven-hoofed ruminants such as cattle, swine, sheep and goats, and outbreaks often lead to trade restrictions.

Thousands of cattle had to be culled as the landlocked country tried to contain the outbreak, while Austria and Slovakia have closed dozens of border crossings, after the disease also appeared in the southern part of Slovakia.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas

Circulating footage from Csemeztanya, Hungary, purportedly shows a blood-like liquid seeping from the ground at the mass burial site of over 3,000 cattle infected with foot-and-mouth disease:

Suspiciously, the claim of a bioweapon attack emerged shortly after Peter Marks, former Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), issued a veiled threat about man-made biological threats on national TV:

BREAKING – Peter Marks Issues Veiled Threat to America About Man-Made Biological Threats

BREAKING - Peter Marks Issues Veiled Threat to America About Man-Made Biological Threats

Last week, before the story broke of a possible biological attack in Hungary, I said that urgent preemptive action is warranted in light of engineered pathogen “warnings” by Peter Marks, former White House COVID Czar Ashish Jha, and Bill Gates — such actions could include:

    1. Destruction of all modified pathogens with pandemic potential.
    2. Immediate global moratorium on gain-of-function research.
    3. Proper investigations into the thousands of BSL-3 and BSL-4 biolabs

Preemptive Action Warranted After Ousted FDA Official Makes Engineered Pathogen Threat

Preemptive Action Warranted After Ousted FDA Official Makes Engineered Pathogen Threat

Thankfully, foot-and-mouth disease poses no risk to humans as it currently only affects cloven-hoofed animals like cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats. The disease is caused by an Aphthovirus of the family Picornaviridae:

However, there are likely large numbers of genetically modified pathogens (viruses, bacteria, and fungi) with pandemic potential sitting in freezers among the thousands of BSL-3 and BSL-4 biolabs in the U.S. and worldwide:

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense: “American specialists capable of enhancing the pathogenic functions of microorganisms are actively operating in Africa.” This U.S. African Biolab Complex is sponsored by the Gates and Clinton Foundations:

Russian MoD Reveals U.S. African Biolab Complex, Sponsored by the Gates and Clinton Foundations

Russian MoD Reveals U.S. African Biolab Complex, Sponsored by the Gates and Clinton Foundations

Rather than sitting back and doing nothing, it would be wise to take preemptive action to prevent another man-made pandemic.

Governing Council Didn’t Suspend FUOYE VC, Documents Reveal

    By Kelvin Obambon

The Governing Council of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, did not suspend the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, contrary to reports on some news platforms.

The Vice Chancellor was reported to have been suspended by the Governing Council of the University following an alleged directive from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. According to reports, the Minister was dissatisfied with the Governing Council’s investigation report that exonerated the Vice Chancellor of sexual harassment levelled against him by a female staff of the University, Engr. Folasade Adebayo.

But documents made available to the Paradise News, confirmed the Council only approved six months accumulated Annual and Research Leave for the VC. According to the Registrar of the school, Mufutau Ibrahim, the approval followed a request by the Vice Chancellor.

“The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) at its 7th emergency meeting held online on Monday 14th April, 2025, considered the request of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina to proceed on his accumulated Annual and Research leave and approved six (6) months, being 126 working days out of his total entitlements of 228 days with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025.

“In addition, the Governing Council appointed Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, who is also the most senior of the three Deputy Vice-Chancellors, as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University for a period of six months with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025,” a letter from the Registrar and Secretary to Council reads.

FUOYE’s Governing Council led by the Pro Chancellor and Chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, had in January 2025 constituted a committee to investigate the allegations and make recommendations.

Accordingly, the Registrar and Secretary to Council, in a statement on Wednesday last week, disclosed that the Council, during its extraordinary meeting on 8 April 2025, considered the reports of the committee, and thus cleared the Vice Chancellor on the allegation of sexual harassment.

  • Joe Biden to speak about Social Security in return to national stage

By STEVE PEOPLES and FATIMA HUSSEIN, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Joe Biden returns to the national stage Tuesday to elevate liberal concerns that President Donald Trump’s agenda is threatening the health of Social Security.

The 82-year-old Democrat has largely avoided speaking publicly since leaving the White House in January. That’s even as Trump frequently blames Biden for many of the nation’s problems, often attacking his predecessor by name.

Biden is expected to fight back in an early evening speech to the national conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled in Chicago. While Biden has made a handful of public appearances in recent weeks, Tuesday’s high-profile address focuses on a critical issue for tens of millions of Americans that could define next year’s midterm elections.

“As bipartisan leaders have long agreed, Americans who retire after paying into Social Security their whole lives deserve the vital support and caring services they receive,” said Rachel Buck, executive director of the ACRD. “We are thrilled the president will be joining us to discuss how we can work together for a stable and successful future for Social Security.”

Trump almost immediately began slashing the government workforce upon his return to the White House, including thousands of employees at the Social Security Administration.

Along with a planned layoff of 7,000 workers and controversial plans to impose tighter identity-proofing measures for recipients, the SSA has been sued over a decision to allow Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to access individuals’ Social Security numbers and other personally identifiable information.

Musk, the world’s richest man and one of Trump’s most influential advisers, has called Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.”

At the same time, Social Security recipients have complained about long call wait times as the agency’s “my Social Security” benefits portal has seen an increase in outages. Individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income, including disabled seniors and low-income adults and children, also reported receiving a notice that said they were “not receiving benefits.”

The agency said the notice was a mistake. And the White House has vowed that it would not cut Social Security benefits, saying any changes are intended to reduce waste and fraud.

Biden will be joined in Chicago by a bipartisan group of former elected officials, including former Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., former Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., and former Social Security Administrator Martin O’Malley.

“Social Security is a sacred promise between generations,” O’Malley said. “We are deeply grateful to the President for joining us at ACRD to discuss how we can keep that promise for all Americans.”

Biden is not expected to make frequent public appearances as he transitions into his post-presidency. He still maintains an office in Washington, but has returned to Delaware as his regular home base. Trump has revoked his security clearances.

While Biden may be in position to help his party with fundraising and messaging, he left the White House with weak approval ratings. Biden also faces blame from some progressives who argue he shouldn’t have sought a second term. Biden ended his reelection bid after his disastrous debate performance against Trump and made way for then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in the fall.

Just 39% of Americans had a favorable opinion of Biden in January, according to a Gallup poll taken shortly after Trump’s inauguration.

Views of the Democratic former president were essentially unchanged from a Gallup poll taken shortly after the November election. They broadly track with the steadily low favorability ratings that Biden experienced throughout the second half of his presidential term.

    Tallinn, April 15, 2025

    Photo: unn.ua

Attorneys representing the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church (EOCC) and the Pükhtitsa Dormition Convent have filed an appeal with Estonian President Alar Karis regarding recent amendments to the Law on Churches and Congregations that effectively ban the Church for being part of the Moscow Patriarchate. The appeal, submitted on April 10, challenges changes adopted by the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament) Parliament adopts law on banning Estonian Orthodox Christian ChurchThe Riigikogu, Estonian Parliament, has adopted the law aimed at banning the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church.

    “>on April 9.

The appeal was submitted by sworn attorneys Steven-Christo Evestus and Artur Knyazev, who argue that the amendments create additional grounds for the Minister of Internal Affairs to forcibly terminate the activities of religious associations, reports the EOCC.

    Constitutional Concerns

According to the attorneys, the amendments represent “a particularly serious violation of religious freedom” by establishing legal grounds for the forced termination of law-abiding religious associations. They maintain that this “completely contradicts both the constitution of our state and international law.”

In their appeal, the lawyers point out that the Estonian Parliament had previously declared the Moscow Patriarchate an institution supporting Russian aggression. Based on this, they argue that all connections of the EOCC and Pükhtitsa Monastery with the Russian Orthodox Church would fall under the new grounds for termination.

“Freedom of religion protects both internal beliefs and the collective manifestation of faith,” the attorneys state in their appeal, citing Section 40 of the Estonian Constitution and Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

    Protection of Religious Freedom

The lawyers emphasize that religious freedom can’t be restricted unless it harms public order, health, or morality. They note that there has been no justification provided that the existence of the EOCC or Pükhtitsa Monastery causes any such harm.

“In the lawmaking of a state governed by the rule of law, it’s completely unacceptable to leave without analysis and evaluation the impact and consequences of the law,” the appeal states. The lawyers point out that there’s no clear explanation of how the implementation of the law and removal of legal entities from the register would reduce security threats.

The appeal raises concerns about the future of approximately 180,000 people affected by the decision. According to the attorneys, the chairman of the Riigikogu’s Legal Affairs Committee acknowledged that there was no concrete action plan discussed for what would happen if canonical ties were not severed.

    Legal Arguments

The lawyers argue that the law fails to meet several constitutional requirements:

    1. Any restriction of basic rights must have a legal basis, be necessary in a democratic society, and not distort the essence of the restricted rights and freedoms.

    2. Restrictions must be justified and proportionate to the legitimate goal being pursued.

    3. Restrictions must not be discriminatory and must not be applied in a discriminatory manner.

They note that the EOCC and Pükhtitsa Monastery have been law-abiding, and there is no justification for depriving them of their existing right to operate.

    Concerns About Implementation

The appeal expresses concern about the vague terminology used in the amendments, including terms like “person with significant influence,” “spiritual leader,” “connected,” and “guided by,” which they argue don’t provide clarity but allow the state to arbitrarily fill the law with content depending on political positions.

“No religious association whose canonical ties extend beyond Estonia can obtain a guarantee of unhindered continuation of its activities with law-abiding behavior,” the lawyers warn.

    Proportionality Issues

The attorneys argue that the forced termination of a religious association is a radical ultima ratio measure that should only be used as a last resort. They state that the government hasn’t justified why existing regulations are insufficient or considered alternatives that would be less restrictive of fundamental rights.

“The state hasn’t analyzed why it’s impossible to achieve the goal by milder means, for example, through administrative supervision or an information obligation, instead of forcing a change in religion and membership in a church with a long history and traditions that people have chosen themselves,” the appeal states.

In conclusion, the attorneys request that the president not promulgate the amendment to the law, arguing that it contradicts the constitution and international law and “clearly contradicts the structure of a diverse democratic society.”

The appeal was signed by both attorneys as contractual representatives of the Estonian Orthodox Christian Church and the Pükhtitsa Dormition Stavropegial Convent.
