  • Hampton VA grapples with staff shortages, watchdog report finds

Primary care teams at Hampton VA Medical Center are operating above capacity as they work to keep up with growing veteran enrollment — leaving staff overburdened and struggling with burnout, according to a recent federal watchdog report.

Facility leaders set the number of patients assigned to a care team at 110% capacity in early 2024 to keep up with demand, according to a March facility inspection report from the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General. Of its 55 primary care teams, Hampton VA Medical Center has seven vacant positions, including several nurses and a provider.

The OIG report underscores the degree to which medical teams at the Hampton VA rely on the opening of two outpatient clinics in Chesapeake to offset the workload. The report noted workers expressing optimism that these new facilities could help ease primary care staff burden and alleviate fatigue and burnout.

However, one of those facilities is expected to open later this month with roughly a quarter of the staff needed to operate at full capacity. The North Battlefield VA Outpatient Clinic will open April 17 with a staff of at least 155 people, 10 primary care teams, two mental health teams, a lab and a pharmacy, according to VA spokesperson Pete Kasperowicz. He said this was just the first phase in staffing the clinic and the VA is still recruiting for hundreds of other positions with the goal to employ 540 people by January.

However, when the Hampton VA’s Associate Director for Operations was interviewed by the OIG, they believed the North Battlefield clinic would initially have 20 primary care teams, according to the report. The OIG declined to provide additional comment on the report.

Hampton VA spokesperson John Rogers said in an emailed statement the new projects will help increase veterans’ access to care across the region.

“To better serve local veterans, we are opening the new North Battlefield VA Outpatient Clinic on April 17 as well as the Western Branch Community Based Outpatient Clinic in 2026,” Rogers said. “These new locations are part of a strategic growth plan to expand care delivery throughout Hampton Roads.”

Hampton VA Medical Center provides care for 69,000 patients across its units, but the hospital is feeling the strain. It is one of the country’s fastest-growing VA health care systems. There are more than 300,000 veterans across the region, and the Medical Center expects a 10-year enrollee growth of roughly 23%.

The report found veteran primary care had increased 7% from the 2021 fiscal year to 2023. To meet demand, the center began offering weekend clinics, but the report said staff volunteer to work overtime to cover those shifts. From the end of the 2023 fiscal year to mid-2024, primary care wait times had fallen by 12 days to 30 days.

This comes as the medical center has experienced top leadership turnover, with the director, chief of staff and chief of surgery all replaced last summer on the heels of two critical investigations that identified issues at the facility. Further, 12 workers were fired from the Medical Center last month as part of the Department of Government Efficiency’s mass cuts to federal employees.

Rogers added the Hampton VA Medical Center is navigating the same hiring challenges as many others across the country and is working with other agencies to pursue aggressive recruitment efforts, including job fairs, incentives and targeted campaigns to fill vacant positions.

“Like all other health care organizations across the country, VA Hampton Health Care System is navigating a nationwide shortage of nursing and primary care professionals,” Rogers said. “Additionally, we collaborate with a large network of community providers to ensure veterans receive timely health care when and where it’s convenient for them.”

As part of the OIG report, the Health Care for Homeless Veterans program also was reviewed. The program coordinator said staff had challenges with community outreach due to the facility’s expansive service area, which stretches into North Carolina.

The OIG recommended in its report facility leaders increase hiring efforts for the vacant social work positions in the Housing and Urban Development–Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program, and in the interim, provide staff to support program enrollment to support staff.

  • Reps Raise 21-Member Ad Hoc Legislative Assembly For Rivers

The House of Representatives has raised a 21-member ad hoc legislative assembly to oversee Rivers State for the duration of the six-month emergency rule.

Members of the ad hoc committee were inaugurated on Tuesday by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

The committee is chaired by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, with Rep. Ali Isah as his deputy.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had, on March 18, imposed a six-month emergency on Rivers State, citing a breakdown of law and order.

Tinubu had, through the proclamation, suspended the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly for the duration of the emergency rule.

The Senate and the House of Representatives had, on March 20, ratified the President’s emergency rule declaration by voice vote.

Membership of the ad hoc legislative assembly was drawn from Reps members across the six geopolitical zones.

Speaker Abbas, while inaugurating the committee, urged members to eschew partisanship and charged them
to ensure good governance, peace, and prosperity of the state.

“Your task is to oversee Rivers State following Mr President’s emergency proclamation. You must not be partisan or biased,” Abbas cautioned.

Others are Idris Wase (North Central), Aliyu Muktar (North East), Sada Soli (North West), Iduma Igariwey (South East), and Shehu Rijau.

Others include Wole Oke, Akara hi Amadi, Patrick Umoh, Isa Anka and James Faleke, among others.

  • Trump Uses Questionable Figure for U.S. ‘Plants and Factories’ Lost Since NAFTA

Este artículo estará disponible en español en El Tiempo Latino.

When President Donald Trump has talked about the need for higher tariffs on imports of foreign goods because of a decline in American manufacturing, he has often made the claim that “90,000 plants and factories” in the U.S. closed after the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico took effect in 1994. But that figure is questionable, and experts say other factors, such as automation, had more to do with the large decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs than trade.

Data from the Census Bureau’s Business Dynamics Statistics database show that there was a decrease of about 74,000 “manufacturing establishments” in the U.S. between 1995, the peak year for manufacturing after NAFTA went into effect, and 2022, the most recent year for which data is available. Furthermore, about one-quarter of the decline during that nearly three-decade period was in establishments with four or fewer employees — so it’s unclear how many of those truly count as a manufacturing factory or plant. For example, some small-business manufacturers make products while working out of their own homes.

About 2% of the decline was in establishments with at least 500 workers. That’s a drop of 1,346 establishments.

However, over the last month, the president — as well as members of his administration — have used the 90,000 figure several times.

On April 7, when discussing new tariffs on imports that he announced days earlier, Trump said, “We’ve lost 90,000 plants and factories. Think of this, 90,000 — you wouldn’t think it’s possible, 90,000 plants and factories since NAFTA. Which was, by the way, the worst trade deal ever developed, ever had by any country, anywhere, NAFTA.”

A few days earlier, in an April 3 interview, Vice President JD Vance said, “Since NAFTA, in the early ’90s, 90,000 American factories have been closed down. That’s small towns that have been blighted.”

And while speaking with White House reporters on March 7 about an increase in U.S. manufacturing jobs in February, Trump said, “As you probably know, it’s a statistic that everyone talks about, but nobody seems to have done much about. Since the beginning of NAFTA, there’s been 90,000 plants and factories closed in this country.”

When White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made a similar claim about lost factories later in March, the White House told the Washington Post that the figure came from a nearly 5-year-old analysis done by the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank.

In that August 2020 report, which was about how Trump hadn’t been successful at reshoring manufacturing jobs during his first presidential term, the EPI said that “the U.S. has suffered a net loss of more than 91,000 manufacturing plants” between 1997 and 2018, the year that the U.S., Canada and Mexico agreed on a new trade deal, known as the USMCA, which officially replaced their NAFTA deal in 2020. The EPI report’s primary source was Business Dynamics Statistics data published by the Census Bureau.

But that figure appears to be out of date. When we tried to confirm that tally using the BDS online tool, we got a smaller decrease — a drop of about 65,000 establishments between 1997 and 2018. Census defines an establishment as “a single physical location at which business is conducted or services or industrial operations are performed.”

Then, when we measured from 1995, which was the NAFTA era’s high point for the number of U.S. manufacturing establishments, and 2022, the most recent year in the BDS database, we came up with a decline of more than 74,000 establishments. (There was a significant decrease in manufacturing establishments in 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

A statistician for the Census Bureau told us that the BDS series figures are updated annually with each new release, which probably explains, at least in part, why our calculations in 2025 were different from the EPI’s in 2020. For its report, the EPI said it also used a different Census dataset to estimate manufacturing losses in 2017 and 2018.

“The 2022 BDS that was released in September 2024 contains the most up-to-date information available,” said the Census official, who told us he also couldn’t reproduce the EPI’s total.

Moreover, thousands of those lost establishments aren’t what many people think of as a manufacturing factory or plant — certainly not the large production facilities that Trump talks about bringing back to the U.S.

The manufacturing sector, according to the North American Industry Classification System, “comprises establishments engaged in the mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products.” Those establishments, which use “power-driven machines and material handling equipment” in the manufacturing process, are often labeled as plants, factories or mills.

“However,” the NAICS says, “establishments that transform materials or substances into new products by hand or in the worker’s home and those engaged in selling to the general public products made on the same premises from which they are sold, such as bakeries, candy stores, and custom tailors, may also be included in this sector.”

Another Census official told us that the bureau doesn’t have a breakdown of how many manufacturing establishments are, or were, factories, plants, mills, home-based or something else.

But we do know from the BDS database that establishments with between one and four workers accounted for about a quarter of the decline from 1995 to 2022. Meanwhile, establishments that employed 500 or more people were less than 2% of the decrease.

As of 2022, about a third of the 268,182 manufacturing establishments in the U.S. had no more than four employees. At that time, a little more than 1% had at least 500 employees.

    NAFTA’s Role in Job Losses

As for NAFTA’s role, some critics of free trade agreements have faulted the old trade pact for a decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs. But others disagree that NAFTA is to blame, as Trump has suggested.

“The decline in US manufacturing jobs — something that has been taking place since 1979 — is more a story of technology (robots, computers, and the like) and changing US consumer tastes than it is about trade,” Colin Grabow, associate director at the Cato Institute’s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, wrote in a March 2024 commentary piece for the libertarian think tank. “We know this because while the number of manufacturing jobs has declined, output has risen.”

Grabow argued that automation and economic development have had more to do with lost manufacturing jobs than either Mexico or China, which joined the World Trade Organization in 2001.

Furthermore, in a 2017 report, the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service said that both proponents and opponents of NAFTA made inaccurate predictions about the trade agreement’s impact.

“In reality, NAFTA did not cause the huge job losses feared by the critics or the large economic gains predicted by supporters,” the CRS said, describing NAFTA’s overall effect on the U.S. economy as “relatively modest.”

  • Warriors look to finally break through in NBA play-in tournament

SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors are well aware of their fraught history in the NBA play-in tournament. Well, most of them.

“I don’t remember anything about being in a play-in game,” coach Steve Kerr joked Sunday after a 124-119 overtime loss to the Clippers sealed the Warriors’ fate as the Western Conference’s seventh seed.

Kerr’s convenient lapse in memory aside, it’s a situation Golden State has found itself in twice in the five years the format has existed — and ended in heartbreak each time.

“We haven’t fared well in these play-in games,” Draymond Green acknowledged.

LOS ANGELES, CA – MAY 19: LeBron James #23 of the Los Angeles Lakers scores the game winning three point basket against Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors in the closing minute of an NBA Tournament Play-In game at Staples Center on May 19, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. They have produced a legendary Steph-LeBron battle, the kindling for a rivalry that would spark a year later and a gut punch at the hands of their regional rivals.

But no wins. Just three losses and two postseason eliminations.

“I remember each one of them vividly,” Stephen Curry said.

If, like Kerr, you washed each of those games from your memory, here’s a refresher on Golden State’s past play-in experiences starting most recently, less than 100 miles up the road on I-80.

2024Scenario: 46-36 regular season record, No. 10 seedResult: 118-94 loss at No. 9 Sacramento Kings

The Warriors were one win away from avoiding another trip to the play-in, but it could have been a lot worse if they hadn’t made a monumental midseason move to bring in Jimmy Butler III.

Golden State was in a similar position a year ago, but without a true No. 2 to Curry, the Warriors limped into the last play-in seed and were subjected to Sacramento fans chanting “Light the Beam” before the fourth quarter was half over.

Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry #30 sits on the court after being knocked down by Sacramento Kings' Domantas Sabonis #10 in the third quarter of their NBA play-in tournament game at the Golden One Center in Sacramento, Calif., on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. (Jane Tyska/Bay Area News Group)

Curry scored 22, but nobody else contributed more than 16 points, and the Warriors trailed by double digits for most of the second half. Keegan Murray scored 32 on 8 3-pointers, and the Kings avenged their Game 7 loss in the first round a year prior.

“We washed the Sacramento game down the drain pretty quickly,” Curry said Sunday night.

2021Scenario: 39-33 regular season record, No. 8 seedResult: 103-100 loss at No. 7 Los Angeles Lakers, 117-112 OT loss vs. No. 9 Memphis Grizzlies

Curry needed only a few words to sum up Golden State’s first foray in the play-in, which still sits with him four years later.

“LeBron hits that shot in the right wing, Ja (Morant) hits a couple tough buckets,” Curry said, his voice trailing off.

There are plenty of parallels to this year. The 2021 Warriors also ended the regular season playing their best basketball of the season and only had to win one game to advance to the playoffs.

It even featured a matchup against the Grizzlies, who visit to Chase Center on Tuesday Golden State hopes for a different ending than in 2021. A year before they butted heads in a heated Western Conference semifinals, Morant and the Grizzlies ended the Warriors’ season.

Curry finished with 39 points and helped the Warriors erase a 10-point deficit with three and a half minutes left to force overtime. But Morant matched him with 36, including a spinning floater in the lane that iced the game with 4.5 seconds left in the extra period.

The do-or-die scenario was set up two days earlier at Staples Center by an even more spectacular shot by James, who drained a 34-footer with under a minute to go and the shot clock expiring. He claimed afterward that he was “literally seeing three rims out there, so I just shot at the middle one.”

The lesson? Take care of business.

The difference? Now they have Butler, who led the Heat from the play-in to the Finals two years ago. As Green said after Sunday’s loss, “I mean, we just draw on having Jimmy. … That’s it.”

The Romanian Orthodox community of London enjoyed a double celebration this weekend, with the great feast of Palm Sunday and the first Divine Liturgy in its new archdiocesan cathedral.

The service at the St. George Cathedral was celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph of Western and Southern Europe and numerous local and visiting clergy, reports the Romanian Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

This marked the opening of the church following extensive restoration works after the acquisition of the new place of worship.

In his sermon, the Metropolitan reflected on Palm Sunday’s profound spiritual significance, urging worshippers to welcome Christ into their hearts as the bringer of illumination and peace. This celebration embodies joy, inviting everyone to present before the Lord the virtuous actions accumulated throughout the Lenten season—mirroring how the crowd once extended palm fronds to greet Christ’s triumphant arrival in Jerusalem.

The new cathedral was acquired in 2023, thanks to contributions from the local community and the Romanian state.

“The new Cathedral is home to a vibrant and active community that, in addition to liturgical services, carries out various catechetical, educational, cultural, and social activities—contributing to the preservation of the identity and unity of Romanians in London and throughout the United Kingdom.”

New Romanian parish established in EnglandHis Grace Bishop Atanasie of Bogdania, vicar of the Romanian Diocese of Italy, celebrated the Divine Liturgy for the community, named in honor of the Myrrh-bearing Women, on the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women in Aylesbury, near Oxford.

“>Last May, OrthoChristian reported on the opening of a new Romanian Orthodox parish in Aylesbury, England, and in Romanian parish in England acquires 19th-century church“Through this acquisition, St. Calinic of Cernica Parish affirms its mission to preserve and transmit the Orthodox faith, providing the Romanians in Southampton with a place for prayer, fellowship, and spiritual continuity,” the Archdiocese writes.”>March of this year, another parish acquired a 19th-century church as its new home.

  • One Piece: Is Sentomaru Dead or Alive in the Egghead Arc?

Sentomaru, the sumo wrestler-like character in One Piece, used to give us nightmares during the popular Sabaody Archipelago arc. He could control the pacifistas and was undoubtedly one of the most powerful characters at that time. But now, the minor antagonist has turned into an ally of the Straw Hats as he needs to protect his savior, Vegapunk, from the wrath of the World Government. Thus, the emotional battle between Sentomaru and his uncle Kizaru left him in a devastated state in the series. So, is Sentomaru dead or alive? Find out whether the Egghead arc marks the end of the road for him in this post.

    Spoilers Warning:

This post contains spoilers about the events of the Egghead arc in the anime and manga. We recommend reading the manga (up to the Chapter 1100) to avoid ruining the intended experience.

Sentomaru vs Kizaru in One Piece

Image Credit: Toei Animation (via YouTube/ONE PIECE Official – ENG)

The One Piece anime resumed the Egghead arc after a six-month hiatus and is currently adapting some of the best fights in this arc, starting with Sentomaru vs his uncle Kizaru.

As the bodyguard of Dr. Vegapunk, Sentomaru betrays the Marines and sides with the Straw Hat Pirates to help the old man escape from the island safely. Due to this action, Saturn, one of the ex-Five Elders, ordered Kizaru to take down Sentomaru and restore order at the futuristic island. The mentors going against their protege is a common theme in the Egghead arc as we earlier saw Garp take on Aokiji.

So, as we saw on Egghead island, Rob Lucci unleashed a strong attack on Sentomaru to make him go unconscious and took control of the Seraphim. In similar fashion, Kizaru crossed the labophase’s protection using his Pika Pika no Mi powers.

We knew Sentomaru had no chance against his uncle and, as expected, it didn’t take long for him to accept defeat. Even though Sentomaru tried to defend himself against his uncle, he was no match for him, and Kizaru defeated him swiftly by unleashing a laser beam attack.

After that, the admiral took control of the latest versions of Pacifistas. Once again, he was knocked unconscious, but Sentomaru certainly didn’t die after his fight with Kizaru.

Does Sentomaru Die in the Egghead Arc?

    Sentomaru escapes from Egghead Island
Image Credit: Viz Media (via Fandom/One Piece Wiki)

After going up against Rob Lucci and Kizaru, Sentomaru is gravely wounded at this point. Still, when Jewelry Bonney was falling from the Fabriophase, Sentomaru came at the right time to save her as they had became close friends when Kuma came with her to Egghead Island. Then, the One Piece Marine officers arrest him later on in the story.

It could have been the end of Sentomaru’s story, but Iron Giant Emet luckily unleashed Joy Boy‘s tremendous Conqueror’s Haki (read about types of Haki) throughout the island. This resulted in most of the Marines getting overwhelmed and fainting to the ground. The teary-eyed Sentomaru uses this opportunity to free himself and escape the island in a small boat. Thus, yes, Sentomaru survives at the end of the Egghead arc.

We might not see him around for a while, but he will be on Luffy and the Straw Hats’ side when the final war commences in One Piece. Until then, what do you think about Sentomaru’s character? Do share your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Death toll in Plateau attacks rise above 60 as community conducts mass burial (Photos)

The death toll in attacks on Monday morning by suspected militia on the Zike community in Kimakpa District Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, has risen above 60, with the community conducting a mass burial on Monday evening while searches are still ongoing in surrounding bushes for possible corpses.

National Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), Danjuma Dickson Auta, told Ripples Nigeria that the attackers numbering over 100 and armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded the community at about 2:45am on Monday morning and began shooting sporadically, killing anyone in sight including unharmed men, women and children, while also setting houses, churches, food barns, shops, and vehicles on fire.

Auta added that over 50 people sustained severe injuries from gunshots or while trying to escape the carnage.

“The Fulani militia invaded the Zike community at about 2:45am and started shooting sporadically, killing anyone in sight including old men, women, children and even breastfeeding babies.

“They were over 100 and carried sophisticated weapons and also burnt down houses, churches, food barns, shops, clinics and vehicles.

“As we speak, we have discovered over 60 corpses with many of them burnt beyond recognition. We have conducted a mass burial and as you can see, the whole community is in mourning. We have also organized a search party to comb the bushes for stray corpses.

“We are calling on the government and security agencies to come to our aid as this is beyond us and we do not have the power or capacity to confront these marauding killers.

“The people managed to contact security personnel on patrol in another community when the attackers invaded the village and started shooting.

“Though the security personnel engaged the invaders and succeeded in repelling the attackers, the damage had been already done,” Auta lamented.

Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Monday night, convened an expanded state security council meeting to address the escalating insecurity in the state.

According to Mutfwang in a statewide broadcast, the meeting which was held at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Jos, was to deliberate on the security situation, especially the “disturbing resurgence of attacks in Bassa and Bokkos LGAs with decisive measures aimed at restoring peace and preventing further bloodshed across the state.”

    During the broadcast, Mutfwang said:

“Today, 14th April 2025, we have just concluded an expanded security council meeting comprising security chiefs and local government chairmen, convened in response to the attack that came to our attention early this morning.

“At around midnight, into the early hours of today, over a hundred bandits descended on one of the communities in Bassa Local Government Area, leaving behind a trail of destruction numerous lives lost and several houses destroyed.

“We have received detailed briefings from the heads of the various security agencies regarding the incident. We are working diligently to establish exactly what happened and why, so that we can respond appropriately and prevent such incidents in the future.

“At the moment, the situation in the area is relatively calm. We have engaged with the affected community, urging the people to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory actions that could further escalate tensions. We are grateful that the youths of the community listened to our appeal.

“We are currently considering far-reaching decisions aimed at preventing future occurrences. The details of some of these decisions will be shared during my broadcast tomorrow.

“In the meantime, I want to reassure the people of Plateau State that we are firmly in control of the situation, and we will go to any length necessary to prevent a recurrence.

“I also want to encourage citizens across the state: if you come across any intelligence no matter how insignificant it may seem please report it to the authorities. We are committed to protecting the sources of information, ensuring that no life is at jeopardy.

“We recognize that without timely and sufficient intelligence, we cannot respond as effectively as needed. By God’s grace, we are working to strengthen our capacity for intelligence gathering.

“Meanwhile , we continue to pray that God will comfort the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.”
