  • Nigeria and other African countries shut clinics over USAID funding cuts

Nigeria and other African countries have shut numerous clinics that were funded by USAID following recent funding cuts by US President Donal Trump.

In Nigeria, clinics that once served 300 people a day in the conflict-hit Borno state have abruptly shut down, Adamu Ibrahim, a laid-off nurse, and other laid-off workers told AFP, following the withdrawal of American funding by President Donald Trump.

“The clinics have been closed and (there are) no more free drugs or mosquito nets,” said Ibrahim.

The sudden dismantling of USAID — the country’s main foreign development arm — is unravelling health care systems across Africa that were built from a complicated web of national health ministries, the private sector, nonprofits and foreign aid.

As the effects of the cuts compound, the resulting damage — and deaths — are unlikely to end anytime soon: malaria cases will peak around the end of the rainy season, while threatened American cuts to global vaccine funding would likely be felt later in the year.

Alongside laid-off workers, malnutrition clinics have shuttered doors in Nigeria.

Rattled supply chains mean drugs are at risk of being stuck in warehouses in Mali. Children are walking miles to reach care in South Sudan for cholera care and dying along the way, and refugee camps in Kenya are facing medicine shortages.

“People with resources will be able to go and get drugs… but the poorest of the poor, out in remote areas of Nigeria and other parts of sub-Saharan Africa, they’re the ones who will be cut off,” said Lawrence Barat, a former senior technical advisor for the US President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI).

“They’re the ones whose children will die.”

Forecasts developed by ministries of health across the continent to plan for the rainy season have deep holes blown in them, said Saschveen Singh, an infectious disease specialist with Doctors Without Borders in France.

In Mali, seasonal malaria chemoprevention drugs given to young children won’t have an issue coming into the country — but American funds were crucial for coordinating their distribution, Singh told AFP.

Meanwhile, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the USAID-supported PMI was the primary malaria drug and test provider to government health facilities in nine provinces.

“Suddenly, they’ll just not have drugs, and it’s going to be very difficult for other actors to step in,” said Singh, adding her co-workers are “scrambling” to map out where gaps may arise.

In South Sudan, USAID-funded clinics have closed amid a cholera outbreak. Children are walking hours to the next closest treatment centre, with at least five dying along the way in the country’s eastern Jonglei state, British charity Save the Children reported earlier this month.

In neighbouring Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, which hosts more than 300,000 people, protests broke out in March when it was announced rations would be lowered, and doctors are running out of medicine.

“All the clinics around, you can get paracetamol. But all other drugs, no,” one camp elder, who asked to remain anonymous, told AFP during a recent visit.

At Kinkole General Hospital, in Kinshasa, doctors were recently treating 23 mpox patients isolated in tents free of charge thanks to American support. But workers have no idea if that funding will continue, despite an outbreak that has infected 16,000 and killed 1,600.

“We’re thinking a disaster is coming,” said Yvonne Walo, an epidemiologist at the centre.

  • BREAKING: Nigerian Singer Portable Freed From Ilorin Prison After Sowore’s Mediation In Osupa Dispute, Cybercrime Charges Dropped

Nigerian human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has intervened in the case involving Fuji star King Saheed Osupa Akorede and controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable.

The intervention led to the withdrawal of charges against Portable, who had been incarcerated in Ilorin over a police complaint filed by Osupa.

Following Sowore’s intervention and Osupa’s withdrawal of the cybercrime charges, Portable was released from Ilorin prison.

“Portable is now free from prison custody,” Sowore confirmed on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Sowore made the development public via his official X handle, criticising the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly criminalising a civil dispute.

“Today, I had an extended discussion with King Saheed Osupa Akorede highlighting that the Nigeria Police Force has no right to criminalise civil disputes,” Sowore wrote.

“He explained that his use of the police was intended to show his non-involvement in any actions that could harm Portable, but acknowledged that his actions might be seen as using the police for repression.”

Portable had earlier been arrested and remanded in a correctional facility in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, reportedly because he could not meet bail conditions after being charged based on Osupa’s complaint.

Following Sowore’s intervention, King Saheed Osupa declared that he had withdrawn all charges against Portable.

“As a result, he declared that he had dropped the charges against Portable,” Sowore confirmed. “Our position remains unchanged: the Police should refrain from using Cybercrime charges against anyone in the future.”

Sowore also reiterated his longstanding call for police reform and accountability, using the hashtags #EgbetokunMustGo, #RepealCybercrimeAct, and #RevolutionNow, reflecting his continued activism against what he sees as systemic abuses of power.

On Sunday night, SaharaReporters reported that the Kwara State Police Command had arrested Portable over allegations of criminal defamation, a threat to life, incitement, and character assassination against Saheed Osupa.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the arrest followed a formal petition filed by Mr. Saheed Osupa alleging that Portable engaged in conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, including the use of abusive and insulting language directed at him.

The statement read, “The petition borders on serious allegations which include criminal defamation, threat to life, incitement, character assassination, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

“In view of the weight of these allegations and the supporting evidence presented, the Command secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin.”

According to the police, operatives from the Kwara State Command travelled to Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Saturday, April 13, where Portable was apprehended at about 7:25 p.m. He was immediately transported to Ilorin for further investigation.

“Upon his arrival, the suspect’s statement was taken in the presence of legal representatives from both parties. He is currently in custody and arrangements are being made to charge him to court without delay,” SP Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed.

The arrest followed several weeks of tension between the two musicians, which spilt over on social media and allegedly included threatening language and defamatory remarks made by Portable against Osupa.

A source close to the case said, “Osupa had no choice but to involve law enforcement after repeated verbal attacks escalated into threats. No one is above the law, and this is a test of how artists should be held accountable for their public conduct.”

In response to the arrest, the Kwara State Police Command urged the public to avoid speculation and allow due process to take its course.

  • Solo Leveling Ragnarok: Is the Sequel Worth Reading?

The popularity of Solo Leveling has grown exponentially over the last couple of years. The source material was already popular during its run, but with the release of the anime adaptation, the title’s fame has skyrocketed. Fans who have read the manhwa until the end know where the series heads and what happens to their beloved protagonist, Sung Jinwoo. However, many fans of the original series are not yet familiar with the sequel or have their doubts about it. So, we discuss whether the sequel, Solo Leveling Ragnarok, is as good as Solo Leveling.

Should You Read Solo Leveling Ragnarok?

Yes, Solo Leveling Ragnarok is indeed a manhwa series that should be read and given a chance to shine. Unlike several other spin-offs, Ragnarok doesn’t divert away from the original characters.

Of course, it shifts its focus to Jinwoo’s son, but it doesn’t compromise on any of the original characters. In a sense, it continues the story of Solo Leveling rather than establishing a story of its own.

The original manhwa introduced us to Sung Jinwoo, and the sequel allows us to see his son, Suho, grow as a hunter. Jinwoo becomes the strongest human being at the end of Solo Leveling and kills the dark forces that threaten humanity. However, that was just the beginning of the end game, as he soon realized that the ones he eradicated were just the puppets, and now, it was time to face the main villains.

So, in the epilogue of Solo Leveling, we see Jinwoo handing over a locket to his beloved soulmate, Cha Hae-In, and instructing Kaisel to take her back to their son on Earth.

Following the beautiful scene, Sung Jinwoo enters the interdimensional portal to confront the Outer Gods, who were the reason for all the chaos in the human world. On the other side, Cha Hae-In gets stuck in another portal for five years. The story of Solo Leveling was intriguing from the start, and the sequel very beautifully expands on the amazing world of the original manhwa.

How Does Solo Leveling Ragnarok Compare to the Original?

It all started with the Absolute Being, who created Rulers and Monarchs at the dawn of time. He was a powerful entity with a significant Mana that gave him the ability to create an entire universe. Did you feel it would have been better if the series delved deeper and gave us some more info about his origin or who he exactly was?

SL Ragnarok Introduces New Villanous Entities

Well, there’s no need to worry, as Solo Leveling Ragnarok does the needful in the most amazing way. The original manhwa focused on the Monarchs and Rulers, and Ragnarok brings the ones who are the biggest threat to the world. These antagonistic figures are called the Itarim, or the Outer Gods.

    Itarim in Solo Leveling Ragnarok

Itarim is a race that the Absolute Being belonged to. These entities are basically the most powerful forces that have the authority to create life out of nothing. For instance, as the Absolute Being whom we met in the original series created Rulers out of light and Monarchs out of darkness, the other Outer Gods created different universes.

The Rulers were the good guys who took possession of some humans who emerged as hunters, and Monarchs (see the strongest Monarchs in Solo Leveling) were the bad guys who chased the Rulers to Earth and caused chaos in the living world. Despite being vessels to the mighty Rulers, the Hunters had to go through a lot of pain while tackling these Monarchs. If Ashborn hadn’t transferred his full powers to Jinwoo, it would have been impossible for anyone to defeat these powerful villains.

In Solo Leveling Ragnarok, Jinwoo has to step up again and leave his family behind to handle the Outer Gods, who want to invade the untamed realm that has been left behind after the death of the Absolute Being.

Not only the Itarims but our heroes also fight their servants called Apostles, who serve as the secondary antagonists of the sequel.

Solo Leveling Ragnarok Doesn’t Forget Jinwoo While Focusing on His Son

Sung Suho in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok

The original manhwa sees Jinwoo fighting all the bad guys after getting trained by the System and eventually becoming the new Shadow Monarch, Ashborn’s successor.

By the time we reached the final chapter, we knew that if, someday, a sequel of the popular manhwa arrived, it would feature Jinwoo’s son in the lead role. That’s because it’s nothing new, and we have witnessed a similar concept in critically acclaimed titles like Naruto. However, despite harboring familiarity in approach, both web novels are way too different. In Boruto, Naruto isn’t given a major role to play, but Ragnarok sees Jinwoo in an important role, even though most of it has been happening off-screen.

Sung Jinwoo becomes Immortal at the end of Solo Leveling, so it makes sense that he holds the responsibility to fight the mighty Outer Gods in the sequel. He discovers he can tackle the Itarim in Outer Space, but he needs a supporting hand on Earth to protect the human world from its Apostles. And who can Jinwoo trust other than his own son? So, he sends Beru to train Suho and prepare him for the showdown.

Sung Jinwoo fought the Monarchs all by himself, but the sequel shows him getting a backup in the form of his own son, Sung Suho. Solo Leveling Ragnarok is certainly a sequel that gives the son a chance to shine without diminishing the father’s glory.

    Sung Suho’s Journey Isn’t A Copy-Paste of Jinwoo’s Story

Sung Suho in Solo Leveling Ragnarok

Sung Jinwoo undergoes an awakening sometime before Solo Leveing’s story. However, he was the weakest hunter of humanity until the System chose Jinwoo in the Double Dungeon. On the other side, Suho’s journey as a hunter starts differently. He gets awakened when he decides to help one of his female classmates from an infected hunter.

Like his father, he also starts at the E-Rank, but he is not like the Jinwoo we met in the first chapter of Solo Leveling. Despite lacking powers, Suho never shies away from standing up against injustice, and this is something that wasn’t possible for Jinwoo until the Double Dungeon incident. He was weak, and more often than not, the boy became a burden for other Hunters during most raids.

Sung Suho, on the other hand, was conceived after his father reached the peak of his powers, so he inherited those abilities since birth. That’s why he was powerful enough to tackle at least the corrupt humans with his bare hands without any otherworldly powers.

Solo Leveling exposed us to the intriguing world of Monarchs, Rulers, and Hunters, while Ragnarok expands the already existing world and brings some new characters to the front. The sequel further boasts some of the best action sequences and comes with unexpected revelations that remained a mystery in the first part.

So, yes, the sequel of Solo Leveling is as interesting and thrilling as the original manhwa. It expands on the world of Hunters by introducing new characters, but it also doesn’t diminish the importance of the characters from the original series.

  • Google Starts Integration between Photos and Gemini

It took a while, but Google is finally expanding its AI solution, Gemini, with more features and seamless integration between Apps. One thing that has always been a predominant truth is that Google Mobile Services is one of the strongest arms of the search giant, especially in the mobile scene. Naturally, making Gemini powerful in all its apps, will quickly make it more popular and necessary for users. Well, today the company is taking an important step in this regard by bringing Geming integration to Google Photos.

Google’s AI assistant Gemini already supports integration with various Google Apps. The list keeps growing with relevant apps like Calendar, Drive, Docs, Maps, YouTube, and others. The Android version also works well with third-party apps and services like Spotify, OpenStax, and WhatsApp. Now, the company is supporting Google Photos, one of its strongest and most essential services.

Google Gemini Becomes Smarter With Photos Integration

The new version of the app was previewed in the last month. Now, the folks at 9to5Google spotted it is finally hitting smartphones. It adds two new components: The first allows it to look through backed-up images and photos to search for faces, locations, and dates. It also offers response-specific prompts, such as “show recent selfies” or “find photos of landscapes”. Google has been implementing smart recognition features in Photos for a while, now it adds a further step with the integration of AI.

The second feature takes more advantage of AI. For example, when asking questions such as “Where did I eat vegan food in Lisbon?” or “What is the driver’s license of the Ferrari I saw in Bergamo?” Tapping a result opens the Photos app, and there is a “Show more” button that should give more details.

Google Photos can be enabled through the Android app or Gemini. In the top-right corner, in the Profile Menu, there are Apps; Scroll to Media, and Enable Google Photos. It sits next to Spotify and YouTube. It is worth noting that the update is rolling out in a gradual form. For now, it is available only in the United States. Google is probably doing some tests with real-world scenarios before proceeding to a wider rollout.

It’s natural to see Google further expanding the features of Gemini. With competitors like ChatGPT and DeepSeek raising their efforts in Android, we expect the company to hurry in implementing features.

  • ‘Plateau killings genocide, not communal clashes,’ ex-Gov Jang faults Tinubu’s labeling of attacks

    Former Plateau State Governor,
Senator Jonah David Jang has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s description of the wave of attacks in the state as mere communal clashes, saying the killings witnessed in some communities across the state are nothing but genocide against the people.

Jang who strongly condemned the wave of killings that have claimed over 100 lives in the past one week, described the violence as not only deeply painful but orchestrated by a known group with a hidden agenda.

In the statement the former governor issued in Jos on Tuesday, Jang expressed his condolences to the people of the state and called on Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to fully understand the gravity and complexity of the security situation.

In the statement titled ‘Let’s call a spade a spade,’ Jang said the senseless killings have caused pain and suffering for the state and its people, and urged the people to take immediate action to put an end to this violence.

“I offer my deepest condolences to the government and people of Plateau State in the wake of the recent wave of attacks that have claimed numerous innocent lives,” he said .

“These senseless killings have caused pain and suffering for our great state and its people, and we must take immediate action to put an end to this violence.”

The former senator praised Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for his tireless efforts at restoring peace and protecting the lives of citizens.

“I commend Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for his tireless efforts to find a lasting solution to this crisis.

“His dedication to the safety and well-being of Plateau citizens is truly commendable.”

Jang also acknowledged President Tinubu’s commitment to ending the violence, but expressed concern over what he termed a misunderstanding of the situation by presidential advisers.

“I also applaud President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his determination to stop the senseless killings of innocent citizens. His commitment to protecting the lives of Nigerians, particularly those in Plateau State, is a positive step forward.”

He called on the President Tinubu to urgently convene a “broader consultation with community leaders to understand the true nature of the crisis and design an informed response.”

The ex-governor, however, faulted the President’s labeling of the violence and killings in the state as mere communal and ethno-religious crisis, insisting that they were pure genocide perpetrated by known assailants against the people.

“However, I believe it is important to address a misconception in the President’s recent statement directing Governor Mutfwang to resolve the communal issue.

“This suggestion appears to stem from inaccurate briefings by his advisers. The attacks in Plateau State are not merely communal disputes; they are perpetrated by a known group with a specific agenda.

“It is crucial for the President to understand the true nature of these attacks in order to address them effectively.

“Additionally, I advise President Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in Plateau State.

“Such a meeting would provide a platform for stakeholders to share their insights and experiences, enabling the President to develop a more informed approach to tackling this problem.”

Jang called on the people of the state to remain strong and resist further attempts to undermine their existence.

“I urge the people of Plateau State to remain strong and resist any attempts to undermine their existence.

“As peace-loving and welcoming citizens, we have endured enough. It is time for us to defend ourselves against these aggressors and demand justice.

“I call upon the people of Plateau State to stay united, vigilant and proactive in the face of these attacks.

  • Calls For Transparency For Trump meeting On The Mega- El Salvador Prison

    President Donald Trump

    By April Ryan

The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, says he is “not releasing terrorists back to this country,” speaking of Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia deported to an El Salvador prison. Trump officials accuse Garcia of being a member of the MS-13 gang. Bukele also offered he could not return Garcia if the United States didn’t want him. Garcia is from El Salvador, according to White House officials. During that Oval Office press conference, President Trump is also considering deporting American citizens, saying, “a homegrown criminal…I am talking about a violent criminal, evil people.” Bukele answered a reporter’s question after President Trump was pressed about bringing Garcia back to the United States following the United States Supreme Court ruling that Trump officials must facilitate the release of Garcia. Garcia was said to have been wrongfully deported to the El Salvador prison. “In your face” are the words Black leaders like New York Congressman Greg Meeks are uttering about today’s Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump and the president of El Salvador.

Meeks, the Ranking Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is requesting “transparency” with a “transcript” of the closed-door meeting between the pair amid the controversy over García’s deportation to an El Salvador mega-prison. Over the weekend, the White House told a judge García is “alive” and “secure.” Under the Alien Enemies Act, the Trump administration is allowed to deport people. However, the question is who and why the administration will remove from the United States to the El Salvador prison. There is a “demand that we [congress] have a transparent readout of what was discussed,” requests Meeks. Democrats feel President Trump can’t be trusted as he “lies.” Meeks explains, “because clearly the Supreme Court, as well of the lower court, has ordered him [President Trump] to have and release the individual who was illegally taken to El Salvador.” Meeks believes Trump should be “demanding” that Garcia “be returned to the United States.” Meeks also says, “We have no idea” what deal will be made between the presidents.

This is the first meeting between Trump and a Latin American leader during the second Trump administration. Former Philadelphia Mayor and Columbia University Professor Michael Nutter believes not only is this meeting “in your face” but that “Donald Trump wants fear in this country.” Nutter believes in being tough on crime; however, he questions these extreme tactics. Nutter feels Trump is perpetually campaigning as “it’s all about the strong man show and that he ran on the backs of migrants and immigrants, that works from a PR standpoint well with his base…. this will be government by a campaign.” As many are studying the law, the precedent, and the morality of these deportations to El Salvador, the former Philadelphia mayor says, “This is not good versus evil. This is documented versus undocumented. This is [a] personal grievance.”

  • Alejandro Garnacho told to leave Manchester United

The 2024-25 campaign has marked another year of disappointment for Manchester United.

The Red Devils have spent a large chunk of the league season in bottom half.

New manager Ruben Amorim was brought in to steady the ship but has been unable to halt the slide, with United now facing a finish outside the top 10.

The Portuguese recently lashed out at his players in a team meeting, highlighting the ongoing struggles for Amorim.

One of the few bright sparks has been Alejandro Garnacho.

The Argentinian reached 10 goals for the season during the recent defeat to Newcastle.

He is set to switch his allegiances, news which came to light following the end of his goal drought.

Despite his tally, only three of Garnacho’s goals have come under Amorim, highlighting his struggles to fit into the new manager’s setup.

The Argentine forward has been granted regular game time.

Partly due to Amad Diallo’s injury, but Garnacho’s performances have been inconsistent.

Speculation around Garnacho’s long-term future resurfaced during the January transfer window.

Uncertainty remains around his summer plans.

Rio Ferdinand advises Alejandro Garnacho to leave

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Garnacho should seriously consider leaving Old Trafford.

Speaking on his podcast, Ferdinand said: “If I was Garnacho’s advisors, I’d be off. I’d advise him to go.

“They are not going to play him in the position where he’s best, they are not going to get the best out of him.”

Ferdinand also pointed out that any potential deal would benefit United financially under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

It marks a sharp turn in Garnacho’s journey, with the youngster once considered a future star for the club.

He once lifted the FA Youth Cup and scored in last season’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City.

Amorim’s tactical switch has reduced the role of natural wingers.

Thus, forcing Garnacho into a narrower position that does not suit his strengths.

Despite the situation, Ferdinand remains convinced the winger has the potential to shine elsewhere.

He added: “I think there’s something there with this kid in the right environment and the right people around him.”

Ferdinand concluded by praising Garnacho’s mentality amid a difficult season: “I’m still seeing enough from this kid in a below average team.”

With Amorim expected to reshape the squad this summer, Garnacho’s future remains one of the big questions heading into the transfer window.
