  • Ukraine says Russian missile strike kills dozens in Sumy

Ukraine said more than two dozen people were killed and scores injured after Russian missiles struck the city of Sumy, days after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war.

Two ballistic missiles hit the center of the city, in northeastern Ukraine, on Palm Sunday morning, the city’s regional administration said on its Telegram channel.

At least 34 people were killed and 117 injured, including children, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media. The missile strikes came as many people were out on the streets and traveling in cars and on public transportation,

At least one of the missiles was equipped with cluster munitions in order to maximize casualties, Andriy Yermak, top aide to Zelenskyy, said on Telegram. The missiles involved in Russia’s deadliest strike of 2025 so far were fired from Russia’s Kursk and Voronezh regions, Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, said on Telegram.

The projectiles were said to be Iskander-M/KN-23 short-range ballistic missiles supplied by North Korea, which Russia is believed to have been since late 2023.

“The world must respond firmly. The United States, Europe, everyone in the world who wants this war and these killings to end,” Zelenskyy said on social media. “Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging this war out.”

The missile attack in the city with a pre-war population of about 275,000 came on the day Christians celebrated the start of Holy Week, and just days after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated pressure on Russia in his bid to secure a ceasefire in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Trump had said on Friday on his social media platform that “Russia has to get moving” and bemoaned the death toll from the war, now well into its fourth year. Witkoff, who’s become a key intermediary on Ukraine for Trump’s attempts to bring an end to the fighting, traveled to St. Petersburg the same day for his third meeting with Putin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the talks with the U.S. envoy were “an additional step” toward a meeting between Trump and Putin, which he said would happen in “due time,” though preparation was still needed.

Peskov said in an interview — excerpts of which were posted Sunday by state TV reporter Pavel Zarubin — that U.S.-Russian dialogue was progressing “really well,” but that it was difficult to restore relations from practically nothing.

Negotiations on a ceasefire — which Trump predicted he could achieve soon after his January inauguration — have stalled following talks in Saudi Arabia last month. Russia is demanding the reconnection of one of its largest state banks to the SWIFT international messaging system that’s under the European Union’s jurisdiction as a condition for accepting a U.S.-brokered truce in the Black Sea.

“It’s now the second month that Putin has been ignoring the U.S. proposal for a full and unconditional ceasefire,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram. “Unfortunately, there in Moscow they are convinced they can keep killing with impunity.”

Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of breaching a 30-day moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure that’s due to expire April 18.

Sunday’s strike by Russia on Sumy follows one earlier in the month on Kryvih Rih in central Ukraine, Zelenskyy’s home town, that killed at least 20 people, including nine children.

Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday it had downed a Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet. Zelenskyy on Saturday said that the plane’s 26-year-old pilot was killed in combat, but that authorities were looking into what had happened, in the second publicly known instance of Ukraine losing that type of aircraft along with its pilot since August.

Ukraine’s forces attacked Russia’s Belgorod region, just over the nations’ border, with 78 drones over the past day, the area’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on his Telegram channel.

  • Bernie Sanders, AOC draw massive crowds in red states on anti-Trump tour

By JONATHAN J. COOPER and REBECCA BOONE

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Stephanie and Ryan Burnett were perplexed. The crowd was enormous. The line snaked endlessly between buildings. Were they in the right place?

“Being progressive in a place like this, people are almost masked or something, kind of seem like the quiet minority,” Ryan Burnett said as he waited to enter the Utah rally. “But this is a space where it’s the opposite of that. This kind of event is especially meaningful right now.”

His mother, a 52-year-old caregiver with an online reselling business, said it was refreshing to be around like-minded people. She’s feeling increasingly like an “outcast” at her congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where the parking lot is filled with Trump bumper stickers.

“I went to our church this morning. I’m coming to this now because I feel more accepted here,” Stephanie Burnett said.

Democrats need to project a kinder, less judgmental image to make progress in red America, said Owen Reeder, 63, an accountant from Bountiful, Utah.

“You’re never going to make a friend by lecturing and pounding somebody on the head with a sledgehammer,” Reeder said. “You’ve got to be nice to everybody.”

Meghan Nadoroff, 36, and their mother, Kathy Franckiewicz, 59, went to the Idaho event Monday. They both live in in the small farming community of Kuna about 17 miles southwest of Boise.

They’ve felt disenfranchised by both parties – bullied by some of the far-right policies of the Idaho’s GOP supermajority, and ignored by the national Democratic Party because Idaho has been written off as a lost cause, said Franckiewicz.

“We have so little presence in Idaho overall,” Nadoroff said of Democrats. “It’s easy to just kind of give up, politically.”

In what feels to many Democrats like dark times, hope and camaraderie are especially valuable.

“It feels safe, to know that there are more of us out there and we’re not just a blue dot in a red state,” said Jaxon Pond, 20, of Meridian, Idaho.

That’s a sharp contrast to everyday life, Pond said.

“Especially as a gay man, I feel like I have to walk on extra eggshells about what I say because Idaho’s not necessarily the safest place to be gay,” he said.

Boone reported from Nampa, Idaho.

You may remember Mega64’s skits that had them recreating the Cell Saga, Majin Buu Saga and the Saiyan Saga of the Dragon Ball Z series. It seems that they’ve teamed up with SNK to create skit focused on Fatal Fury just in time for the launch of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

In this clip, Terry Bogard is facing off against Geese Howard atop a tall tower. Those familiar with the Fatal Fury series probably know where this is going…

Inevitably, Geese Howard is defeated and knocked off the tower. Amazingly, Geese Howard is able to survive the encounter.

Stubbornly, Geese decides that he’s not done yet. Despite being stared at by a lot of onlookers, Geese opts to crawl his way back to the top of the tower for a rematch against Terry.

At one point, someone, evidently unaware of SNK and Terry Bogard’s mannerisms, asks Geese Howard, “Are you okay?” It’s a very ironic scene.

Regardless, Geese Howard is able to climb back up to the tower where Terry Bogard awaits him. And… he immediately knocks him down again.

Apparently, this scene repeats for about 40 times before Geese Howard finally just “gives up.”

At the end, however, it’s seemingly revealed that Geese Howard is still alive after his 40th fall. Could this somehow be a hint at Geese Howard’s presence in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves? Or is this somehow a hint at Nightmare Geese?

The game is set to be released on April 24, 2025. We’ll just have to find out what happens when we get the game then.

  • Opp High School’s Haley Vendetti receives Bryant-Jordan Student Achievement Award

Opp High School’s Haley Vendetti receives Bryant-Jordan Student Achievement Award

    Published 3:09 pm Tuesday, April 15, 2025

    STORY COURTESY OF JOSH BEAN/AHSAA

Opp High School’s Haley Vendetti was named the recipient of the statewide Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Foundation’s Ken and Betty Joy Blankenship Student Achievement Award during the organization’s 40th annual athlete awards banquet held at the Sheraton Hotel Ballroom in Birmingham Monday night.

    Haley Vendetti

Vendetti penned a poignant personal essay for the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship, powerfully describing loneliness and isolation caused by her often chaotic and unpredictable family situation.

Vendetti and her mother survived a horrific car crash in 2014 that claimed the lives of her stepfather and two younger siblings. In the aftermath, Vendetti said her mother slipped into the grip of depression and addiction, leading to Haley living a life of constant uncertainty as she ping-ponged between living with each parent and bouncing from school to school for nearly a decade.

“My ceiling became the only thing that truly saw me — silent, still and unwavering,” she wrote in her Bryant-Jordan essay. “It was the one constant in a world that I felt full of people, but devoid of connection.”

Vendetti attended schools in Florida and South Carolina. She also lived for a time with her father in Mobile. She arrived at Opp as a high school freshman after attending schools in Andalusia, Pleasant Home and Straughn, as well as Fleeta Junior High in Opp.

How does Haley describe her journey? “Really stressful, I will say that!” she said. “It’s stressful trying to take care of yourself.”

Haley’s ability to persevere despite the lack of the normal parental support is a big reason she was named the Class 4A, Region 2 Award recipient and one of 52 regional winners in the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program’s Achievement category, which honors high school athletes who have overcome personal adversity. She and other regional winners, all of whom earn a $3,000 scholarship, were honored at the 40th annual Bryant-Jordan Awards Banquet.

Vendetti received the Ken and Betty Joy Blankenship Student-Achievement Award as the overall state achievement winner. As a Class 4A and overall winner, she receives an additional $7,500 scholarship.

A total of 104 high school senior student-athletes — 52 in the program’s achievement category and 52 in the scholar-athlete category — were nominated by their schools and selected as regional winners. More than $12 million in scholarship funds has been distributed to student recipients by the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program since its inception in 1986.

“If the point of this scholarship is to help change the life of a student who has overcome adversity, Haley is the true definition of why this scholarship is needed,” Opp teacher Abby Presley wrote in a support letter to the Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program.

Vendetti remains reluctant to share many details, describing a strained relationship with both of her parents. Once she arrived at Opp, however, Vendetti began to find the security and connection she craved.

First, she moved in with a friend near the end of the eighth grade and lived there for two years, and she has been living with her boyfriend and his parents for little more than a year.

With her living situation stabilized, Vendetti played tennis and excelled in cross country at Opp, twice running in the AHSAA Cross Country Championships. She picked up a series of part-time jobs to pay for her own expenses, and she currently works in the after-school program at W.S. Harlan Elementary in Florala.

She initially planned to run cross country at Gulf Coast (Florida) State College, but has since opted to concentrate solely on her academic career. She plans to study sonography at Gulf Coast and hopes to eventually work in a medical clinic that specializes in pediatrics or obstetrics.

“The more and more I’ve learned about her story and the more and more I’ve seen her grow and the more and more I’ve seen her mature, I’ve seen her be an inspiration for people around her, even for old folks like me,” Opp Principal Matt Blake said. “The word that really comes to mind that epitomizes Haley is persistence. She has overcome a lot in her life. She has been very persistent to not let the obstacles in her life define her but rather take the initiative to define who and what she is based on her own decisions.”

Few people know about Vendetti’s personal struggles because she hardly ever shares the details with others.

Vendetti uses her family turmoil as motivation to chase her dreams of going to college and living a successful life. That attitude, Blake said, is what makes Vendetti special.

“She is a humble person. She is a hard-working person,” he said. “She doesn’t want pity, doesn’t want someone feeling sorry for her, and she doesn’t want quote-unquote handouts because of the obstacles she’s overcome. She’s a goal-oriented individual who wants to get the things she gets in life on merit.”

What has Vendetti learned through her years of adversity? “It was definitely something rough to go through, but there are always people who have it 10 times worse. That’s my outlook,” Vendetti said. “I always tell myself that somebody out there is having it worse, or somebody out there has it 10 times worse than I have.”

Described by her teachers and coaches as an encourager and uplifter with a kind word to say to someone when the most need it, Vendetti said she found inner strength when she needed it most.

“I think I truly would be okay when I was able to look back and realize I had the fortitude,” she said. “So many have helped me along the way. I am really thankful for everyone who has supported me”

A total of 104 high school regional senior honorees were recognized and awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships through the Bryant-Jordan program.

  • Pastor assaulted, his car set ablaze by residents after being mistaken for livestock thief while ‘having fun’ with a woman in bush

Police in Homa Bay County, Kenya are investigating an incident in which a clergyman was assaulted by residents and his car burnt after being mistaken for a livestock thief while he was having fun with a woman in a thicket.

The clergyman, who belongs to a local Christian church, lost the car in Jwelu village, Kakumu Sub-location, Ramula Location, within Rachuonyo East Sub-county.

The incident began when residents spotted the clergyman’s vehicle parked in a thicket.

Suspecting that the vehicle might belong to thieves intending to steal cattle in the area, they mobilised themselves.

Their suspicion was fuelled by the frequent livestock thefts in the region, where small vehicles are often used to transport stolen livestock.

When the residents approached the vehicle, they found the clergyman with a woman.

They confronted the clergyman and demanded an explanation for his presence in the thicket.

However, the pastor attempted to flee, prompting them to apprehend him.

While one group of the mob continued to assault the clergyman, another group set his vehicle ablaze. Residents claimed they discovered some trousers in the vehicle

“We don’t know his exact purpose, but he was found in the vehicle with a woman. There were also some trousers,” said one resident.

The fire caused significant damage to the vehicle. The mob continued to assault the clergyman until some individuals who recognised him intervened. They informed the mob that they were attacking a pastor.

Upon learning that the victim was a pastor, the mob released him. However, he had sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the woman fled when she saw the clergyman being assaulted.

Rachuonyo East Police Commander Laban Omol confirmed that investigations into the incident had begun. He stated that DCI officers were handling the matter.

“The officers will engage with residents to help establish the truth of what happened,” Omol said.

He urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“Let residents avoid taking the law into their own hands, as doing so can unjustly punish innocent people,” Omol warned.

He also called on residents to report any suspected criminal activity to the police.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Suspended Federal University Oye-Ekiti Vice-Chancellor Fasina Defies Council, Hijacks VC Office And Powers

The suspended Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Fasina, has refused to relinquish control to the newly appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Olubunmi Shittu, despite a clear directive from the university’s Governing Council.

Fasina was suspended on Monday following allegations of sexual harassment made by a senior university official, Engineer Folasade Adebayo.

The Governing Council, in response to the serious nature of the allegation, directed him to proceed on his accumulated annual leave while appointing Professor Shittu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor in the interim.

However, Fasina has allegedly retained control of the institution’s administrative functions, locking the Vice-Chancellor’s office and diverting official correspondence and university vehicles to his personal residence.

On Tuesday, a senior source told SaharaReporters that the suspended VC continues to act as though he remains in charge.

“Fasina’s SAs (aides) moved all mails and vehicles to his house yesterday (Monday) evening,” the source said.

“He boasted to the Acting VC that he is still the Vice-Chancellor. They locked the VC’s office and instructed that all official mails be taken directly to his residence.”

The source added that Professor Fasina has also declared his intention to attend the upcoming Committee meeting to select the new Vice-Chancellor for FUOYE in Abuja despite his suspension.

“The Committee for Selection of New Vice-Chancellor’s meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow (Wednesday) in Abuja. Fasina has positioned himself to attend and insists that the Acting VC must not take any action without his approval,” the source said.

“In fact, both of them are headed to Abuja separately for the meeting. Fasina told Prof. Shittu that anything he wants to do, he must carry him along and that all mails should be sent to him directly. This completely undermines the authority of the Acting Vice-Chancellor.”

The source expressed dismay at the situation, saying, “They are now attending to mails at his house. This shows that Fasina is still very much in control, despite the Council’s suspension order. It’s a dangerous precedent.”

On Monday, SaharaReporters reported that Fasina had been suspended by the university’s Governing Council following allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by Adebayo.

A source told SaharaReporters on Monday that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the initial recommendations of the Governing Council’s Committee, which allegedly ignored the sexual harassment claims and instead recommended that Adebayo apologise to the Vice-Chancellor.

“The minister was very angry with the decision of the council,” the source said.

“He was unhappy that the council tried to sweep the sexual harassment complaint under the carpet and rather told the complainant to apologise. He called the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), to register his displeasure.”

According to the source, following the minister’s intervention, Senator Ndoma-Egba convened an emergency online meeting of the Governing Council at 2:00 PM on Monday, during which the Council resolved to suspend Prof. Fasina.

The source added that Fasina pleaded with the Council to allow him to proceed on his accumulated leave instead of a direct suspension. Eventually, the Council granted his request for a six-month accrued leave.

“You know, as a Vice-Chancellor, if you wish to end your tenure early, especially within six months to the end of your term, you are permitted to proceed on your accumulated leave,” the source explained.

“Although Fasina’s tenure is due to end in August, the Council has now asked him to proceed on that leave effective immediately.”

In the interim, the Governing Council appointed Shittu, a professor of Soil Science and the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months.

This was confirmed in a press statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mufutau A. Ibrahim, and obtained by SaharaReporters.
