  • Seattle City Light Investigated for Workplace Misconduct

A troubling report has brought to light a culture of misconduct at Seattle City Light, revealing that 40 employees were involved in various forms of inappropriate behavior, including drinking on the job, extorting junior staff, and engaging in sexual harassment. These findings stem from a comprehensive investigation conducted by an independent law firm over several years, focusing on workplace misconduct within the utility company.

The report outlines a disturbing trend of inappropriate behaviors among power crews, with on-the-job drinking identified as the most prevalent issue. Investigators documented alarming incidents, such as one employee who became so intoxicated that he urinated on himself at a work site, and another who habitually brought a flask of alcohol to work, referring to it as his “cough medicine.”

Additionally, the investigation revealed cases of extortion, where senior employees allegedly pressured junior workers into providing them with alcohol under the threat of unfavorable performance reviews. The report also highlighted instances of sexism, including an incident where a female employee was coerced into participating in what she described as a “forced wet T-shirt contest,” while male colleagues frequently viewed pornography in the presence of female staff.

Not all 40 employees implicated in the misconduct faced disciplinary actions, as stated by Seattle City Light. Following the investigation, five employees were terminated, seven received suspensions, and nine were issued written or verbal warnings. Thirteen individuals with less severe substantiated claims underwent additional coaching and training, according to the utility company.

The head of Seattle City Light expressed a strong commitment to addressing these issues, stating, “I am determined to create and maintain a culture of trust, accountability, and safety. Workplace misconduct, harassment, retaliation, or discrimination will not be tolerated.” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell also weighed in on the report, reiterating the city’s dedication to fostering a safe and supportive work environment for all employees.

  • Manchester United in talks with unlikely partner

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is doing everything he can to ease the club’s financial pressures and build the club’s global brand.

Throughout the last year and a bit, Ratcliffe has led some extremely controversial decisions such as raising ticket prices, cutting funding to associated groups and making mass redundancies.

However, the INEOS owner has also claimed that without these cost-cutting measures, the club would be bust by Christmas 2025.

That said, Ratcliffe isn’t only engaging in measures to support the club, but also looking at how the United brand can support other causes.

In a seemingly strange link to the outside world, the Government of Tanzania are in talks with Manchester United to explore opportunities in sports development and wildlife conservation in the African country.

The Daily Mail and Kennedy Wandera have reported that United are looking to use their global brand to promote Tanzania as a tourist destination.

Whilst this partnership may seem completely out of the blue, the links are already there through the INEOS owner.

Ratcliffe’s company Six Rivers is currently in Tanzania promoting conservation initiatives, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe meeting with President Samia Suluhu in Dar es Salaam last Friday.

The Red Devils have also released a video with manager Ruben Amorim discussing the meeting, holding a signed shirt with the name “DR SAMIA” on the back with captain Bruno Fernandes’ number 8.

The Portuguese manager commented: “‘I know you are in conversations with Jim about conservation projects in Tanzania.”

He continued: “We hope it goes well. We know you are a huge Manchester United fan and I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford.”

The video also included Sir Alex Ferguson in what could be one of his final appearances as the club’s global ambassador, saying: “Hello Dr Samia, Alex Ferguson here. I know you’re talking to Jim Ratcliffe about important wildlife project in your beautiful country Tanzania.”

He continued: “I hope with your support that your government and Jim Ratcliffe’s interest, that you’ll be successful and protect those beautiful animals.”

  • Man who was allegedly held captive by stepmom for 20 years begins 'process of reclaiming my life'

WATERBURY, Conn. (TCN) – A 32-year-old man who was allegedly held captive by his stepmother for two decades and subjected to malnutrition and “inhumane treatment” has reportedly released a statement.

According to WVIT-TV, the victim, who is referring to himself only as “S,” said, “I am speaking out today to begin the process of reclaiming my life and to have my say in how my story is told.”

Waterbury Police first responded to the scene on the evening of Feb. 17 to a report of an active fire. The Waterbury Fire Department extinguished the flames. There were reportedly two occupants inside the home, 56-year-old Kimberly Sullivan and her adult stepson, who suffered smoke inhalation and exposure to the fire.

According to police, the victim intentionally set his upstairs room ablaze and told officials, “I wanted my freedom” after he had allegedly been held captive by Sullivan since he was around 11 years old.

Detectives reportedly determined the victim had endured “prolonged abuse, starvation, severe neglect, and inhumane treatment.” He was reportedly in a “severely emaciated condition” and had “not received medical or dental care during this time.” Sullivan allegedly provided her stepson with “minimal amounts of food and water, which led to his extremely malnourished condition.”

In the released statement obtained by WVIT, “S” also said, “I am much better and stronger than I was the day the first responders carried me out of my home. I am beyond grateful for the care I have received since then. To all the health care professionals who have helped and nurtured me, thank you. In addition to all of your care, I appreciated the chance to have my first-ever birthday party to celebrate turning 32.”

Part of the statement read, “Much has already been said that tells part of the story of the abuse I endured. Someday, perhaps my whole story will be told.”

Sullivan was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, first-degree unlawful restraint, cruelty to persons, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

“True Crime News” has been following the case since last month.

  • Navy pal of doomed NYC helicopter pilot believes maintenance issue caused crash

A Navy buddy of doomed helicopter pilot Seankese “Sean” Johnson said he doubts the chopper crashed into the Hudson River Thursday simply because it ran out of gas.

Remi Adeleke, 42, a 13-year Navy SEAL veteran, suspects a “maintenance issue” is at the root of the deadly crash, which claimed the lives of Johnson and a family of five from Spain.

“Even if you ran out of fuel it’s not going to cause your propeller blade to detach and fall off,” Adeleke told the Daily News. “I’m looking forward to see the autopsy on the helo (helicopter) and what that shows.”

“It was super sad what happened,” he added. “It was totally unexpected.”

New York Helicopter CEO Michael Roth told The Telegraph that Johnson radioed before plummeting into the water that he was low on fuel and was heading back to the helipad.

Adeleke told The News that he believes that doesn’t explain the crash.

“He is smart enough not to be like ‘Oh, I’m passed E (empty), lets keep flying around,”” he said. “Maintenance had to be the issue with this helicopter. I’ve flown on many helicopters in my career and a helicopter just doesn’t split apart like that in midair.”

“The fact the entire propeller blade detached from the helo and another part of the helo detached and went down, that’s a maintenance issue,” he added. “Something wasn’t locked down or screwed down.”

The NTSB is still investigating the cause of the crash. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said Friday the investigation would look at “reports of a large flock of birds in the area shortly before the crash.” On Saturday, the agency reported that the Bell 2-6 L-4 helicopter was on its eighth flight of the day and had no flight recorders equipped.

Spanish tourists Agustin Escobar, the CEO of Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three young children all died in the crash, as did Johnson, after pieces of the helicopter, including the rotor, appeared to break off in midair.

Adeleke, a writer and actor, met Johnson in 2014 when Johnson was working in Navy tactical support.

“He was like a little brother,” Adeleke said. “He would refer to me as brother and I referred to him as brother as well. We were close.”

The two bonded over shared experience. Adeleke grew up in the Bronx and his dad died young while Johnson grew up in Chicago and didn’t have much contact with his father.

“One thing we discussed was I’m African-American from the Bronx,” Adeleke said. “One percent of Navy SEALS are African-American and I became a SEAL and I’m from the hood and that inspired him. I kind of took him under my wing and became like a father figure and would provide that affirmation to him.”

Johnson worked in executive security after leaving the Navy but had dreams of becoming a pilot, Adeleke said.

“I know he wanted to inspire other young Black men and kids in the inner city to aim high and do something that isn’t expected,” Adeleke said. “Because it wasn’t expected for a kid from Chicago to become a pilot.”

Johnson would text every time he passed a milestone in flight school.

“He was a very genuinely good person. He was like a light in a room. Everybody gravitated towards him, not because he was a charismatic or the life of a party but because he had that aura of a calm, cool, respectable guy,” Adeleke said. “He had a very memorable smile. He was always in a happy mood and he was super giving — like tremendously giving of his time and whatever he had to give.”

Adeleke said he saw a news alert about the helicopter crash but didn’t think much of it at first. Last he knew, Johnson was doing helicopter tours in Las Vegas, he said.

“The New York move was new to me,” he said.

Then he got a message from Johnson’s wife.

“It was a one-paragraph text but it was a long paragraph,” he said. “Two words stuck out to me, ‘Sean’ and ‘passed.’”

Adeleke also was saddened by the death of the tourist family.

“Two generations wiped out,” he said. “My prayers are with the family. The only blessing in it is that they were all together but I would just pray. As a parent that’s just a hard situation to even process.”

Messages of support have been pouring in, from “people who I didn’t know but was with him in flight school or worked with him in Vegas or did executive protection with him,” Adeleke said. “He was just a straight-up good dude, a likable dude. It would be hard for you to find someone who didn’t like him.”

  • Peru’s Ex-President, Wife Jailed 15 Years For Money Laundering

Peru’s former president, Ollanta Humala, was on Tuesday sentenced to 15 years in prison for money laundering following allegations that he received illegal campaign funds during his successful 2011 presidential run.

Humala was accused of receiving money from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, now known as Novonor, to fund his campaign, according to Reuters.

The court also handed a 15-year prison term to his wife, Nadine Heredia, for her involvement in the same offence.

The retired military officer governed Peru from 2011 to 2016 and will serve his sentence at a special police base designed to house former Peruvian leaders convicted of crimes.

He will join former presidents Alejandro Toledo and Pedro Castillo, who are currently imprisoned in the country. Another former president, Alberto Fujimori, was also held at the facility until his release in 2023.

Prosecutors accused Humala of accepting illicit campaign donations from Odebrecht through his Nationalist Party to defeat Keiko Fujimori, daughter of ex-president Fujimori, in the 2011 election.

The investigation into the allegations began in 2016, leading to a three-year trial. Humala has consistently denied any wrongdoing, describing the charges as being politically motivated.

Despite his intention to appeal, the court ruled that Humala’s sentence will be enforced immediately.

Odebrecht, once a major force in Latin America’s construction industry, admitted to distributing bribes to secure lucrative public contracts across the region. The company rebranded as Novonor in 2020 and is currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings.

Humala is now the second Peruvian former president to be imprisoned over the sweeping “Lava Jato” corruption scandal and the fourth to be implicated.

In 2019, ex-president Alan Garcia took his own life as police arrived to arrest him for similar charges. Pedro Pablo Kuczynski resigned in 2018 amid corruption allegations, and Alejandro Toledo was sentenced last year to 20 years for accepting $35m in bribes.

Executives from Odebrecht testified in Peruvian courts that the company financed nearly every major political campaign in the country for close to three decades.
