Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, convicted and sentenced one Uzondu Precious Chimaobi to four years imprisonment for his refusal to accept the Naira as a legal tender.

Chimaobi was arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, on February 5, 2025 on a two-count charge bordering on refusal to accept the Naira as a legal tender.

    One of the counts reads

“That you, Precious Chimaobi Uzondu, on the 10th of December 2024, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, refused to accept Naira (Nigeria legal tender) by accepting the sum of $5700 ( Five Thousand Seven Hundred USD) as a means of payment for a purchase of a cartier diamond bracelet with serial number (12345678) and you, thereby , committed an offence contrary to Section 20 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.”

He initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, leading to his full trial.

Subsequently, the prosecution presented its first witness, PW1, Owolabi Oyarekhua Jude, an operative of the EFCC.

Led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, H.U. Kofarnaisa, Jude told the court that

“the Commission received intelligence on the activities of a jewelry company called Unlimited Jewellers Limited, “whose owner is one Uzondu Precious Chimaobi.

The Company, which  deals in jewelry at Atlantic Mall, Chevron Drive, Lekki, Lagos intentionally tags and sells its products in Dollars as against the CBN Act, 2007 ,which stipulates Naira as the only legal tender in Nigeria.

Subsequently, a covert operation was carried out , where an undercover operative of the Commission disguised as a customer to purchase a Diamond Nail bracelet that was tagged $6000 and bought it for $5700.

The company refused to receive Naira and demanded Dollars as a means of payment. The payment was made and receipt was issued in  Dollars . The owner of the company was arrested and taken to the Commission’s office.”

However, at the resumed sitting on April 14, 2025, the defendant opted to change his “not guilty” plea to “guilty.

Consequent upon his guilty plea, Kofarnaisa, prayed the court to rely on the evidence earlier given by the investigating officer, and admit the same in convicting the defendant.

Kofarnaisa, thereafter, tendered the defendant’s statement and other evidence to further prove his guilt and they were admitted by the court.

Justice Owoeye then adjourned till Tuesday, April 15, 2025 for ruling.

Delivering judgment, they found the defendant guilty and gave him an option of fine of N50,000( Fifty Thousand Naira) on count one.

  • Iran to continue nuclear talks with U.S. in Oman

Iran and the United States will hold the next round of talks on the controversial nuclear programme in Oman.

The Iran news agency, IRNA, reports on Tuesday.

The agency, citing Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, said the second round of negotiations would be held in Oman capital, Muscat, on Saturday.

The U.S. media had earlier reported the talks were expected to take place in Rome.

Last Saturday, Washington and Tehran held first-round talks in Muscat, with Oman acting as a mediator.

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his threat of drastic consequences for Iran over its nuclear programme.

During a meeting at the White House with Salvadoran President, Nayib Bukele, Trump said: “They can’t have a nuclear weapon, and they got to go fast, because they’re fairly close to having one, and they’re not going to have one.

“And if we have to do something very harsh, we’ll do it. And I’m not doing it for us.

“I’m doing it for the world, and these are radicalised people, and they cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

  • Old Trafford matchday security suspended

At the start of the month, United fans witnessed a fairly uneventful Manchester Derby, with the occasion being the first time that neither club scored since 2020.

Despite the 0-0 draw, the fixture was far from uneventful with regards to the fans.

Before the match, The 1958 organised another protest linked with the Derby, a planned sit-in after the game to protest against The Glazers ownership.

The protest was also against the proposed change to seating around the dug-out which is the current allocation for some the longest-held season tickets.

However, during the sit-in after the game, one fan found himself up close and personal with Old Trafford stewards, as he was forcibly removed and restrained by the attendants.

The incident was caught on video by another fan, purposefully filming to ensure that “no one oversteps the mark”.

United previously commented that they are aware of the situation, however can’t comment due to ongoing investigations.

Now, The Daily Mail has reported that the incident is being further investigated by Greater Manchester Police.

The police force have explained that whilst they are reviewing footage from CCTV and fan-recorded videos and witness statements, no charges have been made as of yet.

However, the stewards in question will not be working at Old Trafford whilst the investigation is taking place.

In a response to The 1958 about the incident, United CEO Omar Berrada commented: “A police investigation into the incident is under way and we will not be making any comment whilst that is ongoing.”

He continued: “We can confirm that the security personnel involved in the incident will not be working for the club pending the outcome of that process.”

  • Trump assassination plot tied to ‘Satanic cult’

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has alleged that a 17-year-old linked to a “Satanic cult” was plotting to assassinate President Donald Trump alongside accomplices in Ukraine and Russia.

A recent FBI affidavit claims that 17-year-old Nikita Casap, who has been charged with murdering his mother and stepfather, was plotting an assassination attempt against Trump.

According to The Daily Caller, court documents claim that Casap was in communication with contacts located in Ukraine and Russia regarding the procurement of weapons and other details related to an assassination plot against the 47th president. The outlet noted that following his arrest in February, the Department of Justice alleged that the 17-year-old murdered his parents after being influenced by a “nihilistic” ideology.

According to the FBI’s affidavit, the 17-year-old suspect was involved in a Satanic cult and Russian neo-Nazi organization called National Socialism/White Power. The FBI claimed that Casap had communicated with one individual “in Russian” and with another individual with a Ukrainian phone number regarding his plot to assassinate Trump and overthrow the U.S. government. The affidavit accuses Casap of allegedly talking with his contacts regarding the procurement of a drone that could “drop a bomb,” as well as plans to escape to Ukraine after assassinating the president.

According to WTMJ, Casap allegedly killed his mother and stepfather in February and lived with the two dead bodies for approximately two weeks prior to his arrest on February 28.

“He was in touch with other parties about his plan to kill the President and overthrow the government of the United States,” the FBI said. “And he paid for, at least in part, a drone and explosives to be used as a weapon of mass destruction to commit and attack. The killing of his parents appeared to be an effort to obtain the financial means and autonomy necessary to carrying out his plan.”

The FBI affidavit also claims that Casap was part of a “Satanic cult” called the Order of Nine Angles. According to the FBI, the cult “encourages violence, terrorism, sexual abuse, and child pornography” and promotes “anti-Judaic, anti-Christian, and anti-Western ideologies.”

Additionally, the FBI said Casap is part of a trend of individuals identified as “Nihilistic Violent Extremists (NVEs),” whose actions are linked to a “hatred of society at large and a desire to bring about its collapse by sowing indiscriminate chaos, destruction, and social instability.”

In a “manifesto” discovered by the FBI, Casap allegedly said, “By getting rid of the president and perhaps the vice president, that is guaranteed to bring in some chaos.” The 17-year-old allegedly added, “And not only that, but it will bring further into the public the idea that assassinations and accelerating the collapse are possible things to do.”

  • Media Literacy Key To Combating Fake News — Information Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has emphasised the importance of media and information literacy for public officials to combat fake news and misinformation.

Speaking at the second Spokespersons Summit organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in collaboration with the ministry in Abuja on Tuesday, Idris noted that the ability to decipher, analyze, and evaluate information is crucial in today’s media-saturated world.

The minister attributed the spread of fake news and misinformation to a lack of media literacy, which can lead to public officials being misled by falsehoods and biased narratives.

He stressed that media literacy is essential for public officials to make informed decisions and engage with media content responsibly.

The ministry is working towards establishing the UNESCO Media Information Literacy (MIL) Institute, the first of its kind globally, at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja.

“In fact, I have just returned from Paris, France where I held a meeting with senior UNESCO officials, in which the impending take-off of the Institute featured prominently,” he stated.

Idris equally stated that his ministry, last year, succeeded in the caderisation of Public Relations in the Federal Civil Service in order to deepen professional practice and improve the quality of engagement in the delivery of public communication.

“What this means is that Public Relations has now been designated as a standalone cadre in the Federal Civil Service, with effect from December 2023, and that, what used to be known as the Information Officer Cadre has now been re-designated to ‘Information and Public Relations Officer Cadre’, and ‘Executive Officer (Information and Public Relations)’. Let me add that the NIPR was a key advocate in achieving this enhanced recognition that Public Relations now enjoys within the Federal Civil Service,” he said.

Idris reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to free speech and responsible creative expression, aiming to broaden Nigeria’s media ecosystem and grow economic opportunities.

He urged public officials to equip themselves with media literacy skills to effectively evaluate news articles, identify biases, and distinguish between accurate and misleading content.
