  • A scalable method to produce porous graphene membranes for separating CO2

Capturing CO₂ from industrial emissions is vital to combating climate change, but current methods are costly and inefficient. Graphene, a material with tiny pores, could efficiently separate CO₂ from other gases.

However, producing high-quality graphene membranes at scale is expensive and tricky. It requires costly materials like copper foils and delicate techniques that often lead to defects. The main challenge is finding a way to make these membranes affordably and reliably.

The EPFL team has developed a breakthrough technique to create affordable, high-quality graphene membranes that efficiently filter CO₂ from gases. They achieved this by growing graphene on cheaper copper foils and using ozone to etch tiny pores for precise, selective filtration. Their method ensures uniform pore distribution across large areas, making it scalable for industrial use, unlocking real-world carbon capture applications, and more.

Researchers designed an innovative transfer technique to overcome membrane fragility that eliminates handling and reduces failure rates. Instead of floating fragile graphene onto support, they transferred it directly within the membrane module, ensuring near-perfect integrity.

This breakthrough enabled them to create large 50 cm² graphene membranes with outstanding CO₂ selectivity and gas permeability, marking a significant step forward in efficiency and scalability.

By refining the oxidation process, researchers boosted the density of CO₂-selective pores, significantly enhancing the membrane’s performance. Computational simulations validated that optimized gas flow across the membrane was key to achieving this.

Unlike traditional CO₂ capture methods that depend on energy-intensive chemical processes, these graphene membranes operate through pressure-driven filtration without requiring heat input. This innovation drastically reduces energy consumption, making carbon capture more efficient and practical for widespread implementation. It truly has the potential to revolutionize the field.

This method isn’t limited to carbon capture—it could also be used for hydrogen purification and oxygen production. With a scalable and affordable production process, EPFL’s innovation brings graphene membranes closer to being commercially viable.

  • Why We Rebag Local Rice To Sell As Foreign Brands—Traders

Traders at the Utako Ultramodern Market on Tuesday revealed why some foreign rebagged rice remained in circulation, despite the ban on the importation of the product to Nigeria.

Their revelation followed a raid by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) aimed at busting cartels involved in the production and rebagging of rice in the market.

THE WHISTLER reported that the raid targeted ten shops. However, the commission only sealed four, three containing rebagged foreign rice and one selling empty branded bags.

Responding to questions, Mr Asadu Osita, whose shop was sealed for possessing the discontinued Royal Stallion and Mama Gold rice, claimed that consumers were aware of the rebagged product.

Osita said the rebagged rice was sold due to consumer demand and affordability. He reiterated that buyers were not deceived into paying foreign prices for local rice.

“Some of my customers who buy it know; we explain to them and then sell it at a cheaper price. They know that Thai rice is hardly imported into Nigeria.

“We are not selling as foreign but local; the 10kg stallion rice is sold for N13,500, while the foreign is N26,000.

“Those people who buy it know that it is local, and I just know that it is no longer imported in Nigeria,” Osita claimed.

He further revealed that he purchased the seized items from another vendor in the market.

Mr Emmanuel Nnechi, whose shop was the first to be raided, alleged that he only became aware of the ban following the commission’s action.

“If I knew this stallion was not sold in the market and they had banned it, I wouldn’t have bought it. I buy from Kaduna Road in Niger State and Kano State.”

He criticised the federal government for failing to inform the public about the brand’s discontinued business with Nigeria.

Nnechi said, “If only they published the brands that are not in business, I am a family man; I wouldn’t have bought these items when I knew that I would lose my money.

“And I bought in small quantity because of the seller’s persuasion that it is a good price and in high demand.

“I don’t mind returning these products to where I purchased them.

“It is these officers (FCCPC) who just told me that the royal stallion is rebagged and not the original.”

Supporting the traders’ alleged innocence, the Secretary of the Utako Market Shop Owners/Traders Association, Mr Igwema Alex, said the FCCPC conducted no sensitisation before the raid.

“When you ban an item, it is not only to the traders but to the entire nation.

“But you can’t come to the market and begin seizing goods without educating the consumer and the seller.

“No sensitisation was done in this market to educate traders on what items were banned from the Nigerian market; this is wrong on all fronts,” Alex said.

Responding to the traders’ pleas, Adeyinka said, “Ignorance of the law was not an excuse.”

THE WHISTLER had reported that the commission’s market raid was based on intelligence.

  • This is the worst federal government in Nigerian history

Former governor of Kaduna state, Nasir el-Rufai, says the President Bola Tinubu administration is the “worst and most corrupt” in Nigeria’s history.

El-Rufai stated this during an interview with journalists in Katsina state on Monday, April 14.

He described the government as the most intolerant since Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1999.

“This is the worst federal government in Nigerian history and all the indices have shown it. This is the most corrupt and most intolerant government in Nigeria. This is the most lying government that depends on false propaganda.”

He accused the federal government of spreading falsehoods about the country’s security situation.

“They lied that security has improved in Nigeria. They read out numbers of bandits k!lled except the ones we know are the leading bandits. In Kaduna, Dogo Gide is still around, Mallam Abba, the Boko Haram terrorist, is still alive. Bello Turji is still around but every day, they announce names of people that are bandits’ leaders that they have k!lled and security has improved.”

El-Rufai said insecurity persists in many parts of the country because the federal government has failed to address the root causes of the crisis.

“How many local governments are under the occupation of bandits in Katsina state? How many are occupied by bandits in Zamfara state and some parts of Sokoto state? And because you are in government you think that nothing would happen?”

  • BREAKING: Gun-Wielding Thugs On Seyi Tinubu’s Orders Abduct, Brutalise Nigerian Students NANS President Isah In Abuja

Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has accused Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, and Ladoja Olusola, a rival faction leader of being behind his abduction by gun-wielding thugs in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to a press statement made available to SaharaReporters on Wednesday, signed by Comrade Atiku himself, he was beaten and subjected to dehumanising treatment.

The NANS president said he was also forced to record an involuntary statement at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) studio.

Atiku claimed Seyi Tinubu declared him an enemy after his overwhelming election as NANS president at the 125th convention of the association.

Atiku stated that he had written several petitions to the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies about the threats to his life but nothing was done.

The statement partly read, “…I was abducted in Abuja by gun wielding thugs on the instructions of Seyi Tinubu and Ladoja Olusola. I was beaten, subjected to the most cruel and dehumanising treatments, my clothes torn to shreds and stripped naked.

“I was thereafter hurriedly packaged, and in connivance with the Managing Director of NTA, brought to the station where I was forced to release an involuntary statement,” he said.

It added, “Since my overwhelming election as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), at the 125th convention of the association, Seyi Tinubu has in cohorts with Ladoja, and for whatever reasons best known to him, declared me an enemy, and my life has constantly been under threats.

“I have written several petitions to the Inspector General of Police and other relevant security agencies on this matter.”

Despite the ordeal, he expressed gratitude to Nigerian students, the media, and peace-loving Nigerians who condemned his abduction.

“I wish to convey my gratitude to the thousands of Nigerian students all over the federation who stood in our defence and called for our immediate and unconditional release. I also wish to appreciate the media and peace loving Nigerians who added their voices in condemning my illegal abduction,” he said.

Atiku assured that he would continue to lead NANS without fear or intimidation, committed to serving the best interests of Nigerian students.

“I will continue to exercise this franchise freely given to me to lead this association in this moment in our history, and no amount of intimidation or threats will make us capitulate to the whims and caprices of the enemies.

“We remain even more resolute and committed to serving the best interests of the overwhelming majority of Nigerian students without fear nor favour,” he declared.

  • Bauchi CAN threatens to sue social media content creator, Dan Bello

Bauchi State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has called on China based Nigerian social media content creator, Dan Bello to withdraw what it said is the defamatory and malicious publication he made recently or face legal action.

CAN described the said publication as “baseless, malicious and a deliberate attempt to malign its good image and ridicule its leadership, particularly the Chairman, Rev Dr Abraham Damina Dimeus”.

Reacting to the said social media publication, CAN in a statement signed and issued by the Secretary, Rev Matthew Wakili Laslimbo titled RE: Malicious Allegations by Dan Bello – A Baseless, Defamatory Attack on the Bauchi State CAN Chairman and the Association” urged members of the public to disregard the publication.

The statement which was made available to Journalists in Bauchi on Wednesday reads: “The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bauchi State Chapter, issues this formal and unyielding rebuttal to the vile, malicious, and defamatory allegations recently spewed by Mr. Dan Bello against the person of our Chairman and the integrity of our Association.”

The CAN added, “Let it be stated unequivocally: Dan Bello’s claims are false, reckless, and libelous, a deliberate attempt to malign the reputation of our leadership and mislead the public through fabrication, mischief, and spite. Dan Bello has offered not a single shred of credible evidence to support his wild allegations.”

“His claims are pure fiction, rooted in personal vendetta and petty jealousy, obviously fueled by masked faces. These reckless statements constitute defamation per se under the Nigerian law, statements so inherently damaging that their falsity and malicious intent are self-evident,” It added.

According to CAN, “Under Section 373 and 375 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, false accusations intended to damage the reputation of another person or body amount to criminal defamation, punishable by imprisonment.”

It then declared that, “We are already consulting with legal counsel and preparing to take decisive legal action. Our leader the CAN Chairman, Has never been to any part of the Western world nor addressed any foreign assembly for the said purpose as claimed by Dan Bello. Evidences of flight tickets, Audio/ video of the said address, Meeting Venues, details of account transactions would have been made bare in support of Dan Bello’s meritless campaign.”

CAN stressed that,”Bello’s disgraceful remarks are not just an attack on an individual, they are an attack on the unity and sanctity of the Christian body in Bauchi State. His comments were carefully designed to divide, provoke suspicion, and erode trust within the Church.”

It added that, “This will not be tolerated. His statements, filled with inaccuracies and provocations, are not only misleading—they are a direct insult to the peace-loving people of Bauchi State and an affront to the genuine efforts of interfaith leaders who have worked tirelessly to preserve unity and harmony in the state. Bauchi State, for years and since the emergence of the incumbent CAN Leadership, has been a beacon of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence in Northern Nigeria.

“The collaborative efforts between Christian and Muslim leaders(JNI), spearheaded in part by CAN and its Chairman, have been a model for other states to emulate. From joint peace summits, to grassroots conflict resolution, to inter-religious dialogue forums, the evidence of unity is overwhelming,” It stressed.

CAN further stated that, “Christian and Muslim communities have coexisted in mutual respect, with CAN playing a pivotal role in bridging divides. This peaceful atmosphere did not happen by accident, it was built on decades of deliberate effort, dialogue, and responsible leadership.”

It observed that,”Dan Bello, however, chooses to ignore this progress. His allegations completely disregard the facts on the ground, and instead attempt to inject division where there is unity, and stir conflict where there is peace.”

The leadership of CAN Bauchi has remained transparent, accountable, and consistent in defending the rights and interests of Christians across the state.

It added that,”Our Chairman has exemplified leadership marked by integrity, fairness, and spiritual devotion. To attempt to drag such a legacy through the mud with lies is not only immoral but legally actionable. We are currently preparing a lawsuit for libel and defamation against Dan Bello.”

CAN assured that,”We will not allow this slander to go unpunished. If he has grievances, he is welcome to pursue them through lawful and honorable means, not by launching public attacks devoid of evidence or substance. Under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), freedom of expression does not grant the license to defame or maliciously harm others. Mr. Bello will be made to account for his actions in a court of law.”

CAN therefore urged the public, the Christian community, and all well-meaning Nigerians to ignore the noise of a disgruntled individual with no moral or factual ground to stand on.

It concluded that,”The truth will prevail. CAN Bauchi remains unshaken, undivided, and more determined than ever to protect the spiritual and social interests of our people.”

  • Bayern Munich midfielder offered to Manchester United

Manchester United’s midfield remains a key priority under Ruben Amorim as the summer transfer window looms.

With the midfield performances recently coming under scrutiny, Amorim is keen on adding more energy and dynamism to the squad, and also looking to move on several players.

United’s scouting network has been working overtime, particularly focusing on defensive midfielders who can provide stability and add a new dimension to the team.

With a host of top midfield targets on the horizon, Amorim and his team are also considering options that have a proven track record in the Premier League.

After a difficult first season at Bayern Munich, it looks like Joao Palhinha’s agent is working to get his client back to the Premier League.

According to CaughtOffside, the Portugal international is likely to be offered to the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

Having struggled for regular playing time at Bayern, Palhinha’s representatives look to be exploring a return to England, with other top-flight clubs such as West Ham, Nottingham Forest, and his former club Fulham also possibly among the teams to watch out for.

Bayern could be prepared to let Joao Palhinha go after just one season, with the Bundesliga giants instead prioritising a new contract for Leon Goretzka as he forms a key part of their midfield.

Joao Palhinha was immense during his time at Fulham, and it’s easy to see why Premier League links are emerging ahead of the summer.

There is nothing concrete just yet, but it is understood that a return to the Premier League is Palhinha’s priority, and big names like Arsenal and United are likely to be approached to assess their interest in a potential deal.

The 29-year-old looked like he would be a fine signing for Bayern, but it just hasn’t quite worked out for him, even if he’ll still surely have admirers in England.

Palhinha would surely be welcomed back to Craven Cottage, but it’s also easy to imagine him being a major upgrade on someone like Casemiro at Old Trafford.

Arsenal, meanwhile, might also do well to consider Palhinha if he is indeed offered to them, as they have both Thomas Partey and Jorginho out of contract this summer.
