  • Trump joining trade negotiations with Japanese at the White House

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE and MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said he’s joining some of his top economic advisers on Wednesday for negotiations at the White House over tariffs and trade with a top Japanese official who is traveling to Washington for the talks.

The Republican president said in a post on his social media platform that he’ll attend the meeting alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, top economic advisers with a central role in his trade and tariff policies.

Trump recently announced a round of global tariffs but then quickly put them on hold for 90 days after the markets tanked and fears of a recession mounted. He left steep tariffs in place against China.

The move put Japan’s 24% across-the-board tariff on hold, but a 10% baseline tariff and a 25% tariff on cars, auto parts, steel and aluminum exports to the U.S. remain in place.

Japan, like many other nations around the world that are fearful of Trump’s tariffs and the likely economic fallout, has been scrambling to respond. It has set up a special task force to assess the impact of the tariffs and offer loans and consultation to anxious companies.

Although Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has been working hard to coax exemptions out of Trump, the government has said little officially on what concessions it might offer during these talks.

“Japan is coming in today to negotiate Tariffs, the cost of military support, and ‘TRADE FAIRNESS.’ I will attend the meeting, along with Treasury & Commerce Secretaries,” Trump wrote in the social media post. “Hopefully something can be worked out which is good (GREAT!) for Japan and the USA!”

Japan’s chief trade negotiator, Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa, was headed to Washington on a mission to convince U.S. officials to remove Trump’s tariff measures against the East Asian ally of the United States.

Akazawa is to hold his first talks with Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer through Friday.

“I am prepared for the talks,” Akazawa told reporters at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport before boarding his flight to Washington. “I will negotiate in order to firmly protect our national interest.”

He said that both Bessent and Greer are “known to be pro-Japan and professionally talented” and that he hopes to build a relationship of trust with them. “I believe we can have good talks toward a win-win relationship that will serve national interest for both Japan and the United States,” he said.

Japan is among the first countries to start negotiations with the U.S. Trump and other administration officials have said the phones have been “ringing off the hook” with dozens of countries calling, eager to strike deals with a president who views himself as a master negotiator to avoid tariffs when the 90-day pause ends.

But it was not immediately clear what either side hoped to get out of the negotiations. The U.S. asks remain unclear, other than Trump’s desire for no bilateral trade deficit.

Japan’s asks also are unclear, although it contends that Trump’s tariff measures are likely to violate bilateral trade agreements or World Trade Organization rules. While Ishiba has said he opposes retaliatory tariffs, he also has said he is in no rush to push for a settlement because he doesn’t want concessions.

Trump said he also wants to discuss U.S. military support for Japan, or how much the Japanese contribute to the cost of American troops stationed there, largely as a deterrent to China.

Trump’s demand for more defense spending concerns the Japanese.

Under its national security strategy, Japan aims to double annual defense spending to nearly $10 trillion, or 2% of GDP, in 2027, while there is a concern that Trump may ask for that to be increased to 3% of GDP. Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said Tuesday that the military budget for this year is about 1.8% of Japan’s GDP.

    Yamaguchi reported from Tokyo.

It was mentioned in the patch notes for yesterday’s Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics that there’d be a new piece of artwork added and now, with the patch live, we can actually see it for ourselves.

Showcasing some of the most iconic Capcom and Marvel characters together, it definitely shows us that Shinkiro’s mastery of art hasn’t deteriorated one bit and his pieces are still as stunning as ever.

Shinkiro did many of the art pieces for the pre-release promotion for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, drawing the majority of that game’s cast at the time.

He also did the box art for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 so it’s definitely not the first time we see his talents lent to the series, as he’s done several other pieces back during Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s heyday as well.

That said, it’s cool to see him try his hand at some of the more iconic Marvel vs. Capcom 2 characters as well like Psylocke, Blackheart and Capcom’s very own Captain Commando.

You can check out Shinkiro’s art in all of its glory below and of course also in the in-game gallery if you own Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.

  • Ukrainian authorities target UOC chancellor Metropolitan Anthony, seize computers

    Kiev, April 16, 2025

    Photo: ctrana.media

Ukrainian authorities have targeted another representative of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church—one of the highest-ranking hierarchs.

Yesterday, April 15, employees of the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a search on the premises of the Kiev Metropolis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The UOC chancellor, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony of Borispol, spoke about this incident on his YouTube channel.

“The search was carried out in the chancellor’s office, the reception area, as well as in the office of the Kiev Metropolia, with three computers seized as a result. It should be noted that the search was conducted properly,” said Metropolitan Antony.

The bishop noted that Holy Week is now underway, and the Church of Christ, including all its children, must follow the path of the Savior.

“The path to the Resurrection lies through Golgotha. Therefore, first of all, dear brothers and sisters, I am grateful to all of you for your prayers. I wish that we might pass through this period of Holy Week with spiritual benefit, so that we may joyfully celebrate the Bright Resurrection of Christ. God bless you all,” said Met. Antony.

According to the Ukrainian outlet Strana, the case concerns “the obstruction of the activities of religious communities, in particular, their change of subordination,” that is, the chancellor works to prevent churches from being illegally stole from the Orthodox Church.

This is not the first that the authorities have set their sights on Met. Antony. In May 2023, His Eminence was detained at a checkpoint in the Kiev Province.

  • Peru court sentences former President Humala to 15 years for graft

A Peruvian court has sentenced former President Ollanta Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, to 15 years in prison for their involvement in a far-reaching corruption scandal tied to Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht. The couple was found guilty of money laundering for accepting illegal contributions from Odebrecht and the Venezuelan government to finance Humala’s 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns.

Humala, 62, was taken into custody immediately after the verdict and transported to a police detention facility. His legal team has stated their intention to appeal the conviction. Judge Nayko Coronado, who delivered the ruling, also issued an arrest warrant for Heredia, who did not attend the sentencing and instead sought asylum at the Brazilian embassy in Lima. Following diplomatic discussions, Peru’s foreign ministry confirmed she was granted safe passage to Brazil with her son.

The ruling marks a significant development in the Odebrecht scandal, which has implicated four former Peruvian presidents. Humala, a former army officer who served from 2011 to 2016, was the first among them to stand trial. Prosecutors had pushed for a 20-year sentence for Humala and 26 years for Heredia, accusing them of accepting $3 million in illicit funds from Odebrecht for the 2011 campaign and another $200,000 from then-Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez for the failed 2006 bid. Heredia was also found guilty of concealing real estate transactions linked to the illicit funds.

Both Humala and Heredia have consistently denied the charges. During the hearing, Humala maintained that the verdict was politically motivated and vowed to continue the legal battle to clear his name.

The Odebrecht scandal is considered one of the largest foreign bribery cases in modern history. In 2016, the company admitted to paying over $788 million in bribes across multiple countries, including at least $29 million to Peruvian officials between 2005 and 2014, to secure public contracts.

The fallout from the scandal has shaken Peru’s political establishment. Former President Alan Garcia died by suicide in 2019 as police arrived to arrest him. Alejandro Toledo, who governed from 2001 to 2006, was sentenced last year to over 20 years in prison for accepting bribes. Investigations into Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, president from 2016 to 2018, remain ongoing.

Keiko Fujimori, who lost the 2011 runoff to Humala, also spent 16 months in pre-trial detention over alleged links to Odebrecht, underscoring the scandal’s broad reach across Peru’s political spectrum.

  • How to Get Coarse Thread in RuneScape DragonWilds

RuneScape DragonWilds has a ton of craftable items, from strong weapons to sturdy armors. The game offers multiple ways to strengthen your characters. But to craft these items, you need materials that are often hard to find. One such item is Coarse Thread, which cannot be found lying around and is required for many vital recipes in the game. If you are struggling to find one, then check our complete guide on how to get Coarse Thread in RuneScape DragonWilds right here.

Coarse Threads are one of the important materials in the early game of Dragonwilds. This material is used in multiple recipes, from crafting Ash Battlestaff to crafting bows in Runescape DragonWilds.

To get Coarse Threads, you must first build the Spinning Wheel and then use it to craft them from other materials like Flax or Coarse Animal Fur. Let’s take a detailed look at how to do it:

    1. Craft a Spinning Wheel

First, you must craft a Spinning Wheel in RuneScape DragonWilds. To unlock the recipe for the spinning wheel, collect Flax, Ash Logs, and Stone. Flax is the blue plant that can be found in abundance around Bramblemead Valley. Simply go near these plants and press the Collect button (E) to grab a few.

You can cut down trees and break boulders to collect Ash Logs and Stones. Other than that, these materials are also found strewn on the ground and can be collected normally, but in smaller quantities. Once you have unlocked the Spinning Wheel recipe, here are the exact materials you will need to craft it:

    • 12 Ash Logs
    • 4 Flax
    • 2 Stones

Now, open the Build menu by pressing the ‘B‘ key and select the Crafting tab. Select Spinning Wheel from the Processing section and build it in your house. The spinning wheel requires a shelter, so make sure to create a roof over it to use it in the game.

    2. Collect Materials for Coarse Threads

As we mentioned above, Coarse Threads can be crafted from two materials using the Spinning Wheel, which are Flax and Coarse Animal Fur. While we have shown you how to collect Flax, you can find Coarse Animal Fur after defeating Kebbits.

    3. Craft Coarse Threads

After you have collected the materials mentioned above, you can start crafting Coarse Threads in RuneScape DragonWilds. Follow the steps below to do so:

    • Use the Spinning Wheel to open its crafting menu.
    • Now, move either Flax or Coarse Animal Fur to the Spinning Wheel tab.
    • Hit the Ready to Start option to begin crafting.

Wait for the Coarse Threads to get crafted and collect them from around the Spinning Wheel. One thing to note is that you can craft 1 Coarse Thread from 1 Flax, but on the other hand, you will need 3 Coarse Animal Fur to craft 1 Coarse Thread.

So, that’s it. Now you know how to craft Coarse Threads in RuneScape DragonWilds. If you have any questions or are having trouble finding any of the mentioned items, tell us in the comments, and we will guide you further.

  • Unlocking New Memories: Google Photos Meets Gemini

It took some time, but Google is finally giving its AI, Gemini, more power and deeper app integration. Google Mobile Services has always been a strong part of the company’s success in the mobile space. By making Gemini work across more apps, Google is making it more useful and harder to ignore. The latest move? Bringing Gemini to Google Photos.

Gemini already connects with several Google apps. This includes Calendar, Docs, Maps, Drive, and YouTube. It also works with outside apps like WhatsApp, Spotify, and OpenStax. Now, it’s finally joining one of Google’s biggest tools—Photos.

Gemini Gets Smarter in Google Photos

Last month, Google previewed the new feature. Now, it’s slowly rolling out to phones, as spotted by 9to5Google. The update brings two key features.

First, Gemini can search your backed-up photos. You can ask it to find pictures of people, places, or certain dates. You can also use quick prompts like “show recent selfies” or “find photos of landscapes.” Google has had some of these features before, but Gemini takes it further.

Second, Gemini gets smarter with photo-based questions. For example, you can ask, “Where did I eat vegan food in Lisbon?” or “What’s the license plate of the Ferrari I saw in Bergamo?” If Gemini finds a match, it opens the result in the Photos app. You can tap “Show more” for extra details.

Usage and Accessibility of Gemini for Google PhotosGoogle Photos Gemini

To turn this on, open the Gemini app. Tap your profile in the top-right corner. Go to Apps, scroll to the Media section, and enable Google Photos. You’ll find it next to Spotify and YouTube.

For now, the update is only available in the U.S. Google is likely testing it in real-world use before releasing it more widely.

Gemini is growing fast, and it’s no surprise. With tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek pushing into Android, Google is moving quickly to keep up and stay ahead.

  • RipplesMetrics: As violence soars, Nigeria’s defence budget falls behind

Despite growing insecurity and repeated mass killings across Nigeria, data from the Budget Office of the Federation reveals that the country has consistently allocated less than 10% of its national budget to the defence sector over the last decade.

According to a report by RipplesMetrics, Nigeria’s defence budget as a share of the total national budget has steadily declined, dropping from 8.36% in 2015 to just 5.64% in 2025. While the actual naira allocation has increased in nominal terms — from ₦375 billion in 2015 to a record ₦3.095 trillion in 2025 — the defence sector’s proportionate share has shrunk significantly.

This trend raises questions about the government’s commitment to addressing the country’s spiralling security crisis. Over the past decade, Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing surge in violence, ranging from insurgent attacks in the North East, banditry and kidnappings in the North West, to farmer-herder clashes and communal violence in the Middle Belt and South.

For instance, Ripples Nigeria had continued to track for over six months now since Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Maj. Gen. Chris Musa assured Nigerians that notorious bandit kingpin, Bello Turji would either be captured or eliminated by the Nigerian military, but no end has been met.

Just in the past year, mass killings in Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, and Kaduna states have claimed hundreds of lives, with communities left devastated and security forces often overwhelmed or absent. Analysts argue that the budgetary trend reflects a deeper neglect of security sector reform and capacity building.

Between January and March, the first quarter of 2025, there have been over 3,000 fatalities reported due to insecurity crises in Nigeria and over 2,000 abductions, according to Beacon Security Intel.

The sharpest drop came in the 2024 and 2025 budgets, where despite the defence allocation rising to ₦1.648 trillion and ₦3.095 trillion respectively, the sector’s share of the national budget dipped to 5.73% and 5.64%. This suggests that while overall spending is increasing, defence is not keeping pace with other sectors in budgetary prioritization.

Observers also point to inefficiencies and corruption within the military procurement system, arguing that higher allocations do not always translate to stronger security on the ground. However, many agree that underfunding the sector in a period of national emergency sends the wrong message.

With 2025 shaping up to be another challenging year for national security, calls are growing louder for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s defence strategy — starting with the budget. Although the 2025 budget saw an increase of over N2 trillion from what was budgeted for the defence sector in 2024.

Very recently, the former Vice-President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar criticized the federal government over its handling of the country’s worsening security crisis, describing recent killings and attacks in Plateau State as evidence of a “total collapse” of national security under the present administration.
