  • EXCLUSIVE: Tinubu Orchestrated Obasa’s Court Victory In Exchange For Justice Yetunde Pinheiro’s Appointment To Appeal Court –Sources

The Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Wednesday declared the removal of the reinstated Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, as illegal and unconstitutional.

However, SaharaReporters has learned that the ruling was influenced by a political arrangement by the Bola Tinubu presidency, which involves securing a high-profile judicial appointment for the presiding judge, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro.

Earlier on Wednesday, SaharaReporters reported that Justice Pinheiro voided the plenary session, which led to Obasa’s impeachment, effectively reinstating him as the legitimate Speaker of the House.

But according to high-level sources, the ruling was part of a deal to reward Justice Pinheiro with an appointment to the Court of Appeal.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the arrangement was discussed during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, February 25, between the Presidency and Justice Pinheiro’s husband, Kemi Pinheiro, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

When contacted by SaharaReporters, Mr. Pinheiro denied the allegation.

In her judgment, Justice Pinheiro upheld Obasa’s position, affirming him as the only legally recognised Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The decision follows recent reports by SaharaReporters indicating that Obasa was pressing forward with his legal challenge against former Speaker Mojisola Meranda and several other lawmakers despite earlier intervention by President Tinubu to intervene.

Tinubu had intervened in the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly by calling for a meeting with the Lagos lawmakers in Abuja. At the meeting, he brokered a resolution that required Mojisola Meranda—elected Speaker by the lawmakers after Mudashiru Obasa’s impeachment in January—to step down, while Obasa was expected to withdraw his legal challenge.

Although Meranda promptly complied and resigned as Speaker despite enjoying the support of the majority in the Assembly, Obasa refused to back down or withdraw his suit.

Sources exclusively told SaharaReporters that Tinubu instructed Obasa not to withdraw the case, assuring him that the presiding judge had already been “taken care of.”

“When the Lagos Assembly members met with Tinubu in Abuja, he told them Obasa would drop the case,” a source familiar with the matter told SaharaReporters. “But once they left, he told Obasa not to withdraw the suit. He assured Obasa that the judge was being handled through her husband, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), and that she would be rewarded with a Court of Appeal appointment.”

According to insiders, Kemi Pinheiro was summoned to Abuja in February for a private meeting with President Tinubu concerning the Obasa case. Sources privy to discussions at the meeting claim Pinheiro pledged to persuade his wife, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, to deliver a favourable judgment for Obasa.

Obasa, impeached by the majority of the lawmakers on January 13, 2025, filed a lawsuit at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja in early February, challenging the legitimacy of his removal and naming Meranda and the Assembly as respondents.

His impeachment stemmed from allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. While he was away in the United States at the time of his removal, the Assembly elected Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda as his replacement.

Sources further revealed that Tinubu’s administration actively ensured a favourable court ruling.

“Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) was invited to Abuja to pressure his wife into ruling in Obasa’s favour and restoring him as Speaker,” one of the insiders said. “He met with President Tinubu and gave assurances that it would be done.”

When SaharaReporters contacted Kemi Pinheiro, he vehemently denied the allegation, dismissing it as “rubbish.” He further claimed ignorance of his wife’s involvement in the case.

According to a travel itinerary shared with SaharaReporters, Pinheiro confirmed he was in Abuja on February 25 but said it was for unrelated engagements.

“I appeared before the Federal High Court in Yahaya Bello’s case, attended a public hearing on Tax Reform Bills at the National Assembly, and then returned to Lagos immediately,” he said.

Following the lawmakers’ meeting with Tinubu in Abuja on March 12, Obasa’s legal team appeared increasingly confident about their case.

They insisted there was no plan to withdraw the suit and that they were fully prepared to argue their case in court, despite ongoing political efforts to resolve the Assembly crisis.

  • Court voids Lagos Speaker Obasa’s removal, slams Assembly’s procedure

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, on Wednesday, declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly unconstitutional, rendering the proceedings that led to his ouster null and void.

Justice Yetunde Pinheiro, delivering the judgment, held that the process that culminated in Obasa’s removal violated both constitutional provisions and the Assembly’s own procedural rules.

The embattled Speaker had approached the court after he was removed from office in January, during a controversial session of the House. The session, which reportedly involved 36 lawmakers, took place while the Assembly was on recess and Obasa was out of the country.

Obasa, represented in court by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, argued that the sitting was unauthorized, having been convened without his knowledge or any formal delegation of authority. He contended that such action was procedurally defective and breached the established Standing Orders of the House as well as the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The suit, which listed the Lagos State House of Assembly and Hon. Mojisola Meranda, named as Obasa’s replacement, as respondents, hinged on nine legal grounds. Among these were claims that the purported session lacked legitimacy and that his removal was politically motivated and executed outside the bounds of due process.

Justice Pinheiro agreed with Obasa’s position, affirming that the process did not meet the legal threshold for a valid removal. The judge emphasized that legislative procedure and constitutional safeguards must be strictly adhered to, especially when altering the leadership of a democratic institution.

The ruling not only reinforces Obasa’s restoration to his position but also invalidates all actions taken by the House during the disputed session.

  • Ruben Amorim sends message to Rory McIlroy

Manchester United’s push for European qualification continues under Ruben Amorim, with the team fighting to salvage pride from a mixed season.

While results have been inconsistent, there’s been no shortage of inspiration from the club’s fanbase, and this week, that energy has come from an unexpected source.

Rory McIlroy, a lifelong Red Devil, delivered one of the most emotional sporting moments of the year with his incredible victory at Augusta National.

The Northern Irishman clinched the elusive Green Jacket in dramatic style, finally completing the career Grand Slam at the Masters.

His success has not only caught the attention of the golfing world, but also earned praise from Amorim, who extended a special invitation to the Old Trafford pitch.

United’s manager appeared in a video message congratulating Rory McIlroy, personally inviting him to parade the famous Green Jacket at the Theatre of Dreams.

“Congratulations for the Masters,” Amorim said.

“We want that feeling in our stadium.

“I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford.”

McIlroy responded with enthusiasm, saying, “If it can inspire some better play, absolutely.”

His words resonate deeply as United look to channel some of that champion mentality in their final stretch of the season.

The 35-year-old previously brought the Claret Jug to Old Trafford back in 2014 after winning The Open, but this return would carry a different emotional weight.

Fans, hungry for silverware, would likely welcome the sight of one of their own showcasing success—especially in a campaign marked by inconsistency and frustration.

Beyond his on-field appearances, McIlroy has spoken openly about investing in Manchester United.

Last year, he admitted he’d love to own even “0.00001%” of the club, hinting at long-term ambitions to play a deeper role at the club he’s supported since childhood.

While the Red Devils fight for a strong finish, the chance to witness McIlroy on the Old Trafford turf again, trophy in hand, could serve as a much-needed morale boost for both fans and players.

It’s a symbolic gesture—but one that might just remind the squad what winning truly feels like.

  • A new tool for single-stranded targeting

A few years ago, CRISPR technology was a huge breakthrough in science. It allows scientists to cut double-stranded DNA, making modifying specific genes in plants, animals, and humans easier. This tool has become key in developing treatments for various diseases.

Recently, Professor Frédéric Veyrier and his team at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) developed a new tool using enzymes called Ssn, which can make precise cuts in single-stranded DNA.

Single-stranded DNA is less common than double-stranded DNA but plays a vital role in cell replication and repair processes. It’s also used in many technologies, including gene editing, molecular diagnostics, and nanotechnology.

Until now, no enzyme has been known to exclusively target single-stranded DNA sequences, which has limited the development of technologies based on this type of DNA.

Scientists discovered thousands of rare new CRISPR systems

For the first time, Professor Veyrier and his team at INRS have discovered a family of enzymes that can cut specific sequences in single-stranded DNA. These enzymes, called site-specific single-stranded nucleases (Ssn), have unique properties that allow them to cleave single-stranded DNA.

The team first identified these endonucleases as part of the GIY-YIG superfamily. They focused on one specific enzyme found in Neisseria meningitidis (the bacterium that causes meningitis), which plays a key role in the exchange and modification of genetic material, driving evolution.

While studying the enzyme, researchers found that it recognizes a specific DNA sequence frequently appearing in the Neisseria meningitidis genome. This sequence plays a crucial role in the bacterium’s natural transformation process, influencing how its genome changes.

The researchers also discovered thousands of similar enzymes that can specifically target and cut their own single-stranded DNA sequence. This means that a wide variety of enzymes share this unique property, each with its own specificity.

New four-stranded structure that comes and goes in the DNA

These findings open up new possibilities for DNA recognition and manipulation. They could lead to breakthroughs in both biology and medicine, offering better ways to control bacteria and manage infections linked to them.

On the other hand, the discovery of enzymes specifically targeting single-stranded DNA opens up new opportunities for more precise and efficient genetic manipulation tools. These enzymes could improve gene editing techniques, enhance DNA detection, and refine molecular diagnostic tools. They also have potential uses in medical and industrial fields, including pathogen detection and genetic manipulation for therapies and treatments.

These advances offer great promise in tackling various health challenges. Currently, a patent is pending for the results of this groundbreaking work.

  • Iran told Trump it wants peace, won’t back down against threats

Iran warned against any military aggression while reiterating its commitment to regional peace and a civilian nuclear program in its official response to a recent letter by U.S. President Donald Trump, a senior Iranian military official said.

Trump last month told Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a letter that his country had two months to reach a new nuclear agreement or face possible military action. In his reply, Khamenei made clear that Iran “won’t start a war, but will respond to any threat with full force,” the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported, citing Major-General Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of Iran’s armed forces.

“It was established by the supreme leader that we seek peace in the region, and we don’t pursue nuclear weapons in our nuclear program, but rather the needs of our own people,” Bagheri said.

Trump was also told in Khamenei’s message that Iran won’t hold direct talks with his administration, “but indirect talks are acceptable,” Bagheri said. The text of the letter hasn’t been officially published.

The U.S. president said last week he believed the Islamic Republic was open to direct negotiations over its nuclear program, despite Iranians previously rejecting that assumption. On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed Tehran’s position, saying that direct talks with Washington would be “meaningless,” but that Iran remains “willing to explore the path of indirect negotiations.”

In 2018, Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from a global agreement that curbed Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Since returning to office, he has reintroduced his so-called “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran, escalating sanctions and warning of possible military action if efforts for a new deal collapse.
