By Aaron Allen, The Seattle Medium

Last Saturday, Public Health—Seattle & King County, in partnership with the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM), hosted the fourth annual “Every Month Is Black History Month” Community Health and Resource Fair. This event, held for the third consecutive year at NAAM, coincided with National Public Health Week, emphasizing the ongoing commitment to addressing health disparities within the Black community.

The fair aimed to highlight and tackle health inequities by ensuring access to healthcare resources, expanding Black provider networks, and promoting culturally competent care to improve health outcomes for the Black community in King County.

Daphne Pie, Regional Health Services Administrator for Community Health Services, reflected on the inception of the event.

“Over four years ago, Public Health King County was up against planning on what we wanted to do for Black History Month and one of the things we had talked about is the importance of recognizing that one month is Black history. That February was a short month, the shortest month of the year to celebrate the magnificent things that Black community has done and what did we wanted to do.”

Pie and her team decided to create an event owned by Public Health to annually highlight health inequities and disparities within the Black community.

“So, my team and I would have conversations on do we go with an event that is already out there, or do we have our own event? And then we started thinking about why doesn’t Public Health have an event that we own every single year?”

King County exhibits significant health disparities, particularly among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, often linked to systemic disadvantages and structural racism. These disparities affect various health outcomes, including access to healthcare, insurance coverage, and mortality rates. The Black Community Equity Team deemed it essential to create an environment conducive to addressing these issues.

“When racism was called out as a public health crisis and we created the Black Equity Teams within public health, why isn’t that we did not create our own event, and grow it every single year and be able to highlight the health inequities and the health disparities within the black community and how do we highlight what public health is doing for the black community with all the different programs. Rap it around Public Health Week to give some visibility to Public Health Week,” says Pie.

Pie acknowledged that these issues have been prevalent in Seattle’s Black community for decades and emphasized the importance of addressing them through initiatives like this resource fair.

“Some many health inequalities, to many health disparities for 25 years. Ron Sims was the one who changed the name to Martin Luther King County, he is the one who said many years ago that we have to eliminate health disparities and health inequities in the Black community and here we are 25 years later, and we are still fighting to eliminate health disparities,” Pie adds.

Listening to community concerns, Pie highlighted the need for Public Health to bring services directly to the Black community.

“The one thing that we heard from the Black community, when we talked and listened to the Black community, is that Public Health needs to bring services to the Black community. Stop expecting us to come to you, you bring it to us.”

By adhering to community needs, Pie and Devon Love, Equity and Community Engagement Manager, emphasized the importance of events like this in bringing services and resources directly to the community.

“So, it is important that we bring the services to the people so we can begin and continue to help eliminate these health inequities.”

The fair featured over 60 vendors and service providers, including small businesses, offering a wide range of services such as climate health and equity services, screenings and vaccinations, mammogram screening, foot care, and school immunizations.

“Today is a fabulous day. We have over 60 venders, resource providers, covering everything from foot care, Blue air filtration devices, which is helping to prevent toxic air indoors, so it is our climate health and equity initiative that is helping with indoor air quality. We have a lot of venders who are providing screening, vaccines, so COVID and a lot of people are coming in for school immunizations as well, which is a great perk for today’s events,” said Love. “And there is a lot of resource providers, people who are providing information for parenting, and pregnancy folks, people who are providing information about asthma, and some public health programs, mammograms, we have our dental health van, our DSHS mobile van is here to help with basic food applications and other public benefit programs that are available for support. We have a small section of Black business owners who are selling some of the crafts on site which is a fabulous thing to do.”

The fair also provided free food for attendees, along with access to various health resources, including glucose and blood pressure testing and screening. This comprehensive approach aimed to ensure ample opportunities for community members to access healthcare.

“This is important because it brings awareness to the inequities and disparities that the black community faces. Also, to make the fundamental acknowledgement that black history is American history and should be honored and celebrated every month,” said Love. “So, every month is black month, celebrating that fact, and making sure that people are aware, being able to host here in the museum of course brings that educational component.”

  • Napoli hopeful of cut-price deal for Manchester United attacker

Napoli are once more looking to Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window, with the aim of securing one of their long-standing targets.

The links between Napoli and United have gone back to the summer, when Antonio Conte secured the signing of Scott McTominay who has gone on to thrive in Serie A.

However since then, the Italian side have also been linked with Harry Maguire, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund.

Whilst the interest in Maguire and Hojlund appeared to be fleeting, the club were determined to sign Garnacho in the winter to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who joined PSG.

Unfortunately for Conte, nothing materialised, with Garnacho remaining at Old Trafford, finding his feet a little more under Ruben Amorim.

However, Napoli haven’t given up hope of signing their target.

It’s recently been reported that United have cut Garnacho’s asking price down from £70 million to £50 million, but Conte is confident of an even bigger drop in fee.

TuttoMercatoWeb has now reported that Conte is hopeful of signing the winger for as little as £39 million in the summer.

It’s understood that United are open to selling Garnacho this summer, with the winger not naturally fitting into Amorim’s system and to support the club’s financial struggles.

As a product of the academy, Garnacho’s sale would be regarded as pure profit under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), easing the clubs financial strains even further.

However, it’s unlikely that United will be willing to part ways with the talented youngster for such a low fee given the struggles they are facing.

  • Handyman identified as person of interest after missing elderly woman’s remains found encased in concrete

THURSTON COUNTY, Wash. (TCN) — Detectives located the remains of an elderly woman buried under a shed and have identified her handyman as a person of interest in her disappearance and death.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, the family of 82-year-old Marcia Norman reported her missing on April 4 after they last heard from her three days prior. Norman’s two vehicles reportedly remained parked at her home in Tenino.

Deputies responded to Norman’s residence and determined she “may have left abruptly,” as certain household tasks had been left halfway done. Norman reportedly had dinner on the evening of April 1 with her handyman, Jeffrey Zizz, who authorities believe was the last person to have seen her alive.

Zizz had allegedly built a shed on a separate property in Olympia on April 5, the day after Norman was reported missing. Investigators moved the shed and dug out the ground, where they later found Norman’s remains buried and partially encased in concrete.

The sheriff’s office alleges that Zizz fled to Missoula, Montana, which violated his previous sentence conditions for an unrelated sex offense. Deputies traveled to Montana on April 13 and brought Zizz back to Washington. He remains held in the Thurston County Jail without bond for a child molestation sentencing violation warrant as Norman’s death investigation continues.

  • OPINION: Is Tinubu Truly Serving Yoruba Interest?

A friend posted a small piece below on my WhatsApp platform and asked for my candid opinion. In fact, the comment was inapt and gibberish. Please, endeavor to read the piece as a prelude to my article. To my kinsmen, I come in peace and nothing personal. Isé orí rán mi ni mò n se o. Kí Elédùmarè fi àánú gbàmí.Fairness and justice will remain my watch words, regardless of my prejudices as a Yorùbá man. Yes, we all have prejudices as human beings. No qualms.

“Yes, I love my people dearly but, we must not sow any seed of discord that will haunt the coming generations of Yorùbá sons and daughters if Nigeria will remain a sovereign country.” David Adeyinka Adenekan.

    Ire o!
    A Prelude To My Article

Excerpts From My Private WhatsApp Platform: “As a Yorùbá man can you tell me why you hate Tinubu and wish for his destruction, in a country where people like Buhari are protected by his people and failures like Obi are packaged as the Messiah of Africa by the Igbo nation?
Kindly tell us why the hate for your fellow Yorùbá has made you lose your sense of logic and common sense.

I sincerely want to know. Nobody in his right senses will go for vacation in Adamawa or Anambra, everybody will choose Lagos state. The same state you still accuse him of Godfatherism???
Tell us who poisoned you with self hate and reckless self immolation never to see good in your own leaders, land and people.
    We want to know.
    They jailed Awolowo…
    They killed Akintola….
    They killed MKO Abiola….
You have also joined them to demand for the head of another Yorùbá leader???
How many Igbo leaders have the Yorubas killed in Nigeria???
How many Arewa leaders have the Yorubas killed in Nigeria? None!
But you must handover your own people to them in order to prove loyalty or detribalised???

No race with this level of internal sabotage can be great.

    My Answer

No reason. Most of the hatred against Bola Tinubu is all about ‘Jealousy.’
For some, it’s about “is he the only one?” The man gave everything to make Lagos state great again. He gave free Education, Free Child Healthcare, Free Eye surgery, six Hospitals, eight Estates, over 200 completed roads, BRT, RRS & made his state ten times richer, yet, they vilify him. If it’s easy, why didn’t others you see as Messiah do it in their various states?

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the greatest Yorùbá leader we have in Yorùbá land today. All true born of Yorùbá land should be very proud of him regardless of your religion or your party affiliation.”

    My Article

To start with, nobody will be proud of a president that is pauperizing his own people with severe hunger in the land, weaponizing poverty.

Prior to the inception of this administration, a 50kg bag of rice was less than N25,000, it is now between N85,000 and N110,000, depending on the quality. Five tubers of yam that used to be sold for less than N2,000 is now 10,000; a crate of egg that was less than N1800 is now N7,000. Bread that was between the range of N200 to N700 is now between N2,000 and N2,500, depending on the sizes. A liter of petrol that was N146 is now between N950 to N1,100. The dollar exchange rate that was one dollar to N700 has skyrocketed to N1600. This is coupled with an inflation rate that defies all logic and a rising surge of insecurity across the land that has resulted in the death of hundreds of innocent lives.

Hmmm, “Òrìsà bí o kò le gbèmí,se mí bí o se bá mi.” What is it to be proud about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu(PBAT)?

Yes, you can go ahead and say to the marines that, PBAT is the greatest president in the history of Nigeria even in the face of these “social economic maladies” that are plaguing the entire country.

At this juncture, some of my kinsmen don’t need to be economical with the truth; is Tinubu truly for Yorùbá interest?

Are the Yorubas not affected by the economic hardship created by this administration when President Tinubu removed the oil subsidy without alternative remedies to cushion the effects?

Is the monumental corruption that is presently affecting every sector of the country not affecting the Yorubas as a people?

“Oore wo ni ìpá se fún epòn What do we really benefit from a Yorùbá man as president with severe hunger in the land and many out of school students in the south west that used to be the pride of western education?

E kó Ilà kúrò l’éko, èko kò ko Ilà.

E jáwó kúrò nínù àpòn tí kò yò, kí e gbé omi ilá ka orí iná, this government is not promoting Yoruba cultural value of economic prosperity for all as it was during the golden era in the sixties under the able leadership of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. PBAT’S administration is a government for the special elites (the so-called Lagos boys). A bourgeoisie government indeed!

This ethnic bigotry and primodial sentiment must stop because hunger is a faceless virus; regardless of your color, creed, race and ethnicity. We all buy food in the same market.

The so-called euphoria of the lopsided appointments that largely favour our kinsmen at the detriment of other geo political zones is just for a moment because power is transient.

That former President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Muhammadu Buhari lopsided the appointments at the detriment of other geo-political zones does not in any way means we have to toe the same line. Why? The answer is simple; Yorubas are pace setters, “a jí se bí Yorùbá làáríi, Yorùbá kìí se bì í se bí i baba enikéni.” That is why we are a unique ethnic identity across the world. We set the pace for others to follow. What a golden opportunity for a Yorùbá man as president to change the course of history and live above board.

This retaliation policy of lopsided appointments that is being orchestrated by PBAT is needless and it is going to backfire in future if the fraudulent political structural arrangement is still what it is.

    History will judge.

Also, who are the Yorubas that are getting the plum jobs? Are they not Tinubu’s Lagos boys? The bottom line is that Tinubu is not just representing the strong cultural value of Yoruba as a people, Afénifére (love thy neighbors the way you love thyself). This is our “Omolúàbí ethos.”

Stop promoting PBAT to denigrate what we truly are as Yorùbá people.

Most of the protagonists of Tinubu are blindfolded with ethnic bigotries. It is also called suffering and smiling.

Emphatically, Tinubu’s mal-administration is not who we are as Yorùbá people.

The only legacy that Tinubu will have is to dismantle the fraudulent country called Nigeria or, go back to regional autonomy of 1963 Republican Constitution vis a vis, resource control. If he does that, Tinubu will forever be a great placard in our minds because he would have saved the coming generations from a wasted life of vicious circle. Lóbátán!

Sometime, òwe tó so pé “Omo eni kò ní sè’dí bèbèrè kí á fi ìlèkè sí ìdí omo elòmíràn” Àsìpa òwe ni o.

    Look before you leap. Gbam!

The kind of characteristics that PBAT has displayed in his journey so far as the president of Nigeria may not call for the collective support of the Yorùbá as a people because that is not who we are.

Gbogbo wa ni ebi n pa, we are all suffering from acute hunger in the land. Lóbátán!

  • SF Giants’ Casey Schmitt already excelling at new position

PHILADELPHIA — Casey Schmitt picked up the first base position roughly two weeks ago. In his first game at the spot, he had to borrow Sam Huff’s mitt because he didn’t have his own. For someone still learning the position, he already looks like he’s played it for life.

Schmitt made his latest impressive defensive play in the Giants’ 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park, picking a tricky line drive out of the dirt then flipping it to Justin Verlander for the out. Schmitt also roped a 110.2 mph two-run single, then was several feet away from hitting a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game.

“He has third base down, and it looks like it hasn’t taken him too long to get first base down, too,” said manager Bob Melvin.

Schmitt made another slick play in the eighth inning on Sunday against the New York Yankees. With the Giants clinging to a one-run lead, Schmitt dove to snag J.C. Escarra’s grounder, then threw to a sprinting Tyler Rogers to get the out and end the inning. While defensive stats should be taken with a grain of salt in small samples, Schmitt has already totaled two defensive runs at the position.

The early returns are all the more impressive given Schmitt’s total lack of experience playing first base as a professional.

Prior to April 1, Schmitt had never played in a game at first base since the Giants selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft. Not in the majors. Not in the minors. Not in spring training. The last time he had played at first base prior to this season was roughly six years ago during summer ball when he was still in college. Schmitt is far more accustomed to the other corner position, having played 244 games at third base in the majors and minors combined. In 2022, Schmitt earned a Minor League Gold Glove at third base.

“I’ve been taking ground balls during (batting practice) and working on the picks,” Schmitt said. “Knowing where to go in situations, stuff like that.”

Wilmer Flores appeared likely to split time with LaMonte Wade Jr. at first base heading into the season, but Flores has spent nearly this entire season at DH. After playing 10 games at first base during spring training, Flores has only played one game at first base so far this season. Jerar Encarnacion has experience playing first base but is currently on the injured list with a left hand fracture. Schmitt, then, has become San Francisco’s backup first baseman behind Wade.

Playing Schmitt at first base allows the Giants to keep the 33-year-old Flores off his feet and, by extension, healthy. Flores only played 71 games last season before undergoing a season-ending Tenex procedure on his right knee, which was compromised the whole year. After only hitting four home runs in ‘24, Flores has already hit six homers over 17 games in ‘25.

Schmitt also has better career splits against left-handed pitchers than Wade, so it should come as no surprise that all four of Schmitt’s starts at first base have come on days where the opposing team starts a left-handed pitcher. Against lefties, Schmitt has a career .706 OPS while Wade has a career .559 OPS.

The 26-year-old doesn’t have eye-popping offensive numbers to begin the season (.566 OPS) but he hasn’t lacked for hard contact. Of the 13 balls that Schmitt has put into play, five of them have been at least 100 mph and two of them have been at least 110 mph. Schmitt’s 111.4 mph double against the Cincinnati Reds’ Nick Lodolo — a lefty — nearly matched his career-high max exit velocity of 111.6 mph.

“Anyway I can get there, I’m excited to do it,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt is no longer borrowing Huff’s mitt, having bought one of his own. As things stand, he’s set to get some good mileage out of it.

  • OpenAI Releases o3 and o4-mini, Says o3 Can ‘Generate Novel Hypotheses’

In December 2024, OpenAI announced o3, its most advanced reasoning AI model, and said the model will be released after proper safety testing. Finally, the frontier AI lab has launched the full o3 AI model after a gap of four months. Along with that, OpenAI has also released the next-generation o4-mini (and o4-mini-high) reasoning model.

In these four months, OpenAI has improved the o3 model even further and says o3 is the “most powerful reasoning model” developed by the company. Both o3 and o4-mini models can use multiple agentic tools inside ChatGPT, including web search, Python tools, and more. The reasoning models can finally analyze images as well. Both o3 and o4-mini are trained to pick the right tools, depending on the task.

OpenAI says o3 sets a new benchmark in coding, math, science, and visual tasks such as analyzing images, charts, and graphics. Early testers say that o3 can “generate and critically evaluate novel hypotheses—particularly within biology, math, and engineering contexts.

On the other hand, the new o4-mini is a smaller model, designed for speed and cost-efficiency. It excels in math, coding, and visual tasks. In fact, the smaller o4-mini model achieves 99.5% on AIME 2025 when given access to a Python interpreter.

As for benchmarks, both models have nearly saturated AIME 2024 and 2025. However, on GPQA Diamond, o3 achieves 83.3 and o4-mini gets 81.4. On Humanity’s Last Exam, o3 (without tools) scores 20.32 and with tools, gets 24.9. Finally, on SWE-Bench Verified, the o3 model scores 69.1%, even higher than Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (63.8%).

o3 and o4-mini multimodal and coding benchmarks

On multimodal benchmarks, both models are pretty competitive and achieve high accuracy in MMMU, MathVista, and CharXiv-Reasoning.

Lastly, OpenAI also released Codex, a new command-line agentic tool, somewhat similar to Anthropic’s Claude Code. You can run it from your terminal and take advantage of multimodal reasoning using o3 and o4-mini.

    Availability: OpenAI o3 and o4-mini

As for availability, o3 and o4-mini are rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, starting today. The two new models will replace o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high. OpenAI says ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users will get access in one week. Thankfully, o4-mini is also coming to free-tier ChatGPT users, which can be accessed through the ‘Think’ button.

OpenAI has also assured that o3-pro is coming in a few weeks with support for all tools. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Pro users can continue to use the o1-pro model.

OpenAI o3 is a Powerful Reasoning Model

In case you missed the 2024 announcement, OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model was the first to crack the ARC-AGI benchmark, scoring an impressive 87.5% on the ARC-AGI Semi-Private Evaluation set in a high-compute configuration. François Chollet, the creator of ARC-AGI, noted in a blog post:

This is not merely incremental improvement, but a genuine breakthrough, marking a qualitative shift in AI capabilities compared to the prior limitations of LLMs. o3 is a system capable of adapting to tasks it has never encountered before, arguably approaching human-level performance in the ARC-AGI domain.

However, it was also revealed that o3 had been trained on 75% of the ARC-AGI Public Training set, raising questions about how much of o3’s performance relied on generalized intelligence or benchmark-specific tuning.

Nevertheless, a recent report from The Information reveals that o3 can blend information from multiple fields like Nikola Tesla. It can come up with novel scientific ideas and experiments in areas like nuclear fusion and pathogen detection. In fact, OpenAI reportedly believes that its capabilities are powerful enough to justify a $20,000 per month pricing tier and calls it a “PhD-level AI.”

  • Reps summon Rivers sole administrator

The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Wednesday vsummoned the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd).

The House spokesman, Akin Rotimi, said in a statement in Abuja that the former chief of naval staff is expected to appear before the Green Chamber for a “comprehensive interactive session.”

He said the lawmakers would deliberate on reports and developments emerging from Rivers State since Ibas assumed office.

He added that a formal letter of invitation has been sent and acknowledged by the administrator.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Ibas as Rivers sole administrator on March 18.

This followed the imposition of a state of emergency on the oil-rich state.

The president also suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara; his deputy Ngozi Odu; and all the members of the House of Assembly for six months.

The president immediately nominated Ibas as administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state for the first six months.
