  • Insecurity: Mutfwang bans night grazing in Plateau

The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has banned night grazing in the state following the spate of attacks and killings in some communities.

Mutfwang issued the ban in a statewide broadcast on Wednesday in Jos, the state capital.

On April 2, gunmen attacked Hurti, Josho, Daffo, and other communities in Manguna District of the locality and killed over 70 people.

In a fresh attack on Sunday, the criminals attacked Zike and Kimakpa communities of Kwall District, Iregwe Chiefdom of Bassa, and killed more than 20 people.

The attackers also destroyed properties in the communities.

The governor also restricted the movement of cattle on vehicles in all parts of the state from 7:00 p.m.

He said the move was aimed at checking the rising security challenges in the state.

He said: “To restore calm and strengthen vigilance, I hereby announce that, effective Wednesday, April 16, night grazing of cattle is strictly prohibited.

“Also, transportation of cattle by vehicle is banned after 7:00 p.m. The use of motorcycles is restricted from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. across the state until further notice.”

The governor, who assured residents of the state of his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, promised to support the security agencies in the state.

Mutfwang insisted that the killings were not an isolated conflict between farmers and herders, and thanked President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to lasting peace in the state.

  • Study shows that international educators and students want to lessen carbon footprint but that barriers remain

The International Education Sustainability Group (IESG) has released the first-ever public results from its Climate Action Barometer (CAB) benchmarking study, and the findings are important given the growing tendency of international students to research the sustainability profile of universities and colleges they are considering.

The 2024 study involved 22 institutions in 10 countries that collectively enrol over 190,000 international students. Overall, international students account for 35% of the total enrolment of the participating institutions.

Students are actively looking for sustainable universities

As you can see from the illustration below, related QS research has found that more than three-quarters of students would prefer a sustainable university over a top-ranked institution, a third would pay more to attend a university with strong sustainability outputs, and two-thirds factored in the sustainability performance of a university in their choice to enrol there. Not shown in the infographic is another impressive stat: almost half (48%) said they would choose a sustainable university over one in the Top 100.

The influence of UN Sustainable Development Goals

Of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that all 193 United Nations member states agreed to in 2015 – with a target of these goals being met by 2030 – several specifically reference education and research, which is understandable given schools and universities’ role in educating youth for contemporary challenges. SDGs are increasingly being woven into K-12 and higher education curricula in many countries, and a large proportion of students are therefore familiar with the importance of the SDGs while deciding:

    • Which destination to study in
    • Which institutions to apply to
    • Which programmes to consider

From the institutional side, working towards sustainability is complex – even when grounded in the best intentions. As the CAB report notes, international education is not easy on the environment. Collectively, international education at the 22 institutions and pathway providers in the 2024 study generated nearly 700,000 tCO2-e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) with the largest share of that carbon footprint – roughly 83% of the total – stemming from student travel abroad.

Institutions truly committed to SDGs often find other ways to contribute to sustainability efforts (e.g., through academic departments and programmes, through campus initiatives, and through careful consideration of in-person travel vs. digital alternatives).

In general, the CAB study found that most institutions in the sample are very committed to climate action, but that performance was weaker when it came to emissions reduction initiatives and staff involvement in sustainability efforts. Just under half of international staff are “somewhat” responsible for climate change action initiatives at their university, while a third are “moderately” responsible. Only 19% are “mostly responsible.”

As you can see from the chart below, barriers to staff action towards sustainability efforts include limited resources, lack of set targets, lack of clear metrics, and uncertainty regarding who is responsible.

Innovative ways of reducing staff travel

Given that in-person overseas marketing is one of the major ways in which international educators contribute to global warming, it is important for institutions to look for ways to reduce emissions in this area. The CAB survey reveals a trend of institutions merging overseas activities and representatives to reduce the amount of staff travel. More than half (59%) are leveraging faculty members’ visits to include marketing efforts, 45% are leveraging alumni in local markets, and 32% are using their own students who are studying abroad in recruitment efforts.

Effects of global warming widely anticipated across the sample

Nearly two-thirds of institutions expect that their operations will be significantly impacted by climate change by 2030. Even now, Australian universities are reporting serious weather-related implications for their home campuses especially, as shown in the chart below.

    Leaders in sustainability efforts

Stepping for a moment outside of the CAB findings, other sources indicate that Europe, and some European institutions in particular, have developed a competitive advantage with respect to sustainability. According to the UN’s Sustainable Development Report, the top ten countries for progress made towards the 17 SDGs are:

    1. Finland
    2. Sweden
    3. Denmark
    4. Germany
    5. France
    6. Austria
    7. Norway
    8. Croatia
    9. UK
    10. Poland

At the institutional level, of the Top 100 universities in QS’s global sustainability rankings for 2025, nearly half are in Europe. This includes twenty-six in the UK, six in Germany, four in Sweden, three in France, two in Switzerland, in The Netherlands, two in Belgium, and one each in Ireland and Spain.

The full list of top-ranked universities for sustainability, according to QS, is here. For those universities, sustainability is a compelling advantage. IESG Chief Executive, Ailsa Lamont, says:

“Universities have a powerful opportunity to lead the education sector’s response to climate change. By embedding sustainability into strategy, operations and leadership, institutions can build resilience, align with student and stakeholder expectations and strengthen their global reputation.”

  • SF Giants enjoy blowout win as every starter reaches base multiple times

PHILADELPHIA — The Giants and Phillies both have 144 games remaining in their respective seasons. The calendar has yet to flip from April to May, but it’s fair to assume there will be crisper, cleaner, quicker games ahead.

San Francisco and Philadelphia combined to walk 15 batters, four of those walks being with the bases loaded. Robbie Ray and Aaron Nola, the day’s starters, accounted for nine combined free passes. Each team committed an error. Amidst the sloppiness, the Giants enjoyed one of their best offensive nights of the season, blowing out the Phillies, 11-4, as every member of the starting lineup reached base multiple times.

“On a night that was going to be tough to hit the ball out of the ballpark, you saw a lot of balls that were hit good — trying not to do too much,” said manager Bob Melvin. “Taking our hits, taking our walks, scoring in that fashion.”

There was no shortage of notable stat lines on a night where the Giants scored a season-high 11 runs.

Mike Yastrzemski, Jung Hoo Lee, Wilmer Flores and Patrick Bailey each drove in two runs while Yastrzemski, Lee, Matt Chapman and Tyler Fitzgerald also enjoyed multi-hit games. Fitzgerald, in particular, enjoyed his second three-hit game of the series. He entered this road trip with a .219 batting average and .546 OPS, but following Wednesday’s performance, Fitzgerald’s numbers include a .314 batting average and an .842 OPS.

“Anytime as a young player you go through a struggle — you’re playing a new position, there’s a lot thrown at you — and now you’re on the other side, I think it’ll do wonders for him,” Melvin said. “But there’s a lot of season left and there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs for everybody.”

Robbie Ray allowed four earned runs over four innings and threw 93 pitches while getting a no-decision, but Lou Trivino, Camilo Doval and Spencer Bivens combined to throw five scoreless innings of relief. Trivino earned his first win since Aug. 21, 2022 by pitching a scoreless fifth and sixth.

“It’s been a long time, so it’s cool to be back in the stat column,” Trivino said. “I didn’t think it would mean a lot to me, then I found out I was the winning pitcher. I was like, ‘Okay, that’s kind of meaningful.’ It’s just cool. It’s been a while, and it’s nice to be able to contribute with such a good team.”

Said Melvin of Trivino: “It really did settle things down. He threw strikes. He didn’t walk anybody. That was huge to give us two innings like that. And (Bivens) at the end as well. It was good to see (Doval) get a clean inning and throw the ball really well, too.”

The Giants (13-5) scored four runs in the top of the first inning on Lee’s RBI single, Flores’ bases-loaded walk and Bailey’s two-run single, forcing the Phillies’ Aaron Nola to throw 35 pitches in the process. As Nola walked off the field, the home fans showered him with boos.

Those four runs appeared as though they’d be enough for Ray, but San Francisco’s starter couldn’t find the strike zone. The Phillies (10-8) had one infield hit in the first inning — a leadoff single by Trea Turner — but scored twice as Ray walked four batters, two of them with the bases loaded. Ray needed 39 pitches to record three outs, throwing so much that reliever Spencer Bivens had begun to warm up.

  • Neighbour arrested for brutal r3pe and m8rder of two young women reveals he attended their burials

Detectives have arrested the prime suspect in the brutal m8rder of two young women, Rosemary Njeri Ndekei, 22, and Hellen Wambui, 20, in Kenya.

The victims were recently r3ped and k!lled in Ngorongo village, Gituamba Ward, Gatundu North Constituency, Kiambu County.

The suspect, said to be the victims’ neighbour, Samuel Kamau, was arrested on Wednesday, April 16, in the ‘Dry’ area of Ngorongo and is currently in police custody.

Shockingly, he confessed not only to the crimes but also to attending both girls’ burials and even helping to dig their graves.

After murdering the first victim, Kamau kept her smartphone and began using it, which eventually led detectives to him through the phone’s IMEI tracking.

As for the second victim, he had disposed of her phone by dumping it into a pit latrine, where local youths assisted police in retrieving it earlier today.

The suspect has admitted to both raping and k!lling the two girls and has shown no signs of remorse.

He is now undergoing processing and will be arraigned in court.

It was gathered that Wambui, described as a God-fearing, introverted young woman, was sent by her mother to an MPESA shop to withdraw money for their dinner around 5 PM on March 30, 2025 but she never returned home.

For two agonizing days, her family searched for her, only to receive the devastating news on Tuesday evening that her body was discovered just meters from their home.

Njeri was found d3ad at a coffee plantation and her body doused with acid after her boyfriend, John Ndung’u Mwihaki saw her off in another town to see a friend.

  • How we discredited 2023 election rigging claims – Lai Mohammed

A former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has explained how the ministry discredited the negative narrative on the rigging of the 2023 presidential election.

Mohammed narrated this in a paper presentation at a Spokesperson Summit declared open on Tuesday in Abuja by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris

In a copy of the presentation seen by journalists on Wednesday, the former minister recalled that just before leaving office in 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration was faced with the allegations of rigging the presidential poll.

He said the allegation was largely centered around the delay in uploading results to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) IReV portal.

This, according to him, played no role in the official collation of election results.

Mohammed said the development was compounded by misplaced sentiments, fueled by sections of the international media that had relied on questionable pre-election opinion polls and social media noise, suggesting that the Labour Party (LP) candidate had won the election.

In correcting the negative narrative, Mohammed said his office opted for an evidence-based approach provided to both local and foreign media organisations and influential think tanks

He said: “Our goal was to present them with irrefutable facts on how the election was won and lost.

“We met with journalists and representatives from Voice of America, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy Magazine, Associated Press, BBC, The Economist, Reuters, Bloomberg, Politico, Hudson Institute, U.S. Institute of Peace, Atlantic Council, and Chatham House, among others.

“To our surprise, many of these organisations were unfamiliar with Nigeria’s constitutional requirements for winning a presidential election.

“We explained that, under Chapter 6, Section 134 of the Constitution, a candidate must not only win the majority of votes but also secure at least 25% of the votes in no fewer than two-thirds of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” he said.

“Based on this, we made it clear that neither the PDP nor LP candidates had a viable path to victory.

“We presented the breakdown: the LP candidate placed a distant third, trailing the APC candidate by approximately 2.7 million votes.

“The APC candidate not only won the highest number of votes but also secured 25 percent of the vote in 29 states – well above the constitutional threshold.

“The PDP candidate, who came second, met the 25 percent threshold in only 21 states, while the LP candidate achieved it in just 15 states. Both fell short of the constitutional criteria for victory”.

To further dispel the allegations of rigging, the former minister said they laid out compelling evidence that the APC lost in key states with high number of registered voters – Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, and Katsina – even though all had APC governors.

Mohammed added: “If the APC had manipulated the process, why would it lose in its strongholds?

“We highlighted that major APC figures lost their states in the presidential election: the party’s presidential candidate, the sitting president, the party chairman, the campaign director general, and several APC governors all lost their home states.

“If the party were truly adept at rigging, would it have allowed such high-profile defeats?”
