  • Trans Women Are Not Legally Women, UK Supreme Court Rules

Handing down judgment, Lord Hodge said it was the court’s unanimous view that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the 2010 Equality Act refer to biological sex, not acquired gender.

Gender-critical campaigners hailed Wednesday’s ruling as a victory for common sense, claiming gender “self-ID is dead”.

It follows a years-long legal battle between campaign group For Women Scotland and the Scottish Government over the definition of a woman.

Lord Hodge told the court: “The unanimous decision of this court is that the definition of the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.

“But we counsel against reading this judgment as a triumph of one or more groups in our society at the expense of another. It is not.”

In its 88-page ruling, the court added that the “concept of sex is binary” under the Equality Act 2010.

For Women Scotland cracked open a bottle of champagne outside the Supreme Court and broke into song to celebrate the ruling.

Susan Smith, the group’s co-director who was also handed a bouquet of flowers, said the group had been given no steer about which way the decision would go and was “really worried” it may go the other way.

In a statement outside court, she said: “Today, the judges have said what we always believed to be the case, women are protected by their biological sex – that sex is real.

“We are enormously grateful to the Supreme Court for this ruling.”

Speaking afterwards, she said: “Dogs and toddlers know what sex is. It’s one of the most concrete things in nature.

“Sex can’t be changed but the law had the capacity to make a mess of anything. We’re just really glad common sense prevailed.”

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Baroness Kishwer Falkner, its Chairman, said: “Today the Supreme Court ruled that a gender recognition certificate does not change a person’s legal sex for the purposes of the Equality Act.

“We are pleased that this judgment addresses several of the difficulties we highlighted in our submission to the court, including the challenges faced by those seeking to maintain single-sex spaces, and the rights of same-sex attracted persons to form associations.

“As we did not receive the judgment in advance, we will make a more detailed statement once we have had time to consider its implications in full.”

Kemi Badenoch has said “you cannot change your biological sex” as she reacted to the Supreme Court’s ruling.

“Saying ‘trans women are women’ was never true in fact, and now isn’t true in law either,” the leader of the Conservative Party said.

“This is a victory for all of the women who faced personal abuse or lost their jobs for stating the obvious. Women are women and men are men: you cannot change your biological sex.

“The era of Keir Starmer telling us women can have penises has come to an end. Well done to For Women Scotland!”

Follow the Telegraph‘s live coverage here.

The pushback against woke gobbledegook continues.

It’s good to see the Supreme Court taking the side of common sense in this case – not something that can be taken for granted. After all, the US Supreme Court has taken the opposite view.

In its infamous 2020 Bostock ruling, Neil Gorsuch – supposedly a conservative originalist justice – joined with the liberals and authored a majority opinion that claimed constitutional protections for sex apply equally to gender identity (yes, really – he argued that treating men who think they’re women differently to women necessarily means discriminating on the basis of sex, rather than, as common sense would have it, on the basis of delusion). This resulted in the US Government last year mandating the use of preferred pronouns in every workplace in America (at least we can assume this particular measure will be overturned by Trump, if it hasn’t been already).

So credit to the UK Supremes for getting it right here, something their US counterparts miserably failed to do, leaving the United States still living in trans cuckoo land. (ER: No.)

  • San Jose Sharks unable to slow down Edmonton Oilers in season finale

SAN JOSE – Another season in which the San Jose Sharks have finished at the bottom of the NHL standings has, perhaps mercifully, come to a conclusion.

The Sharks hoped to finish the year on a positive note. But with their 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night at SAP Center, they ended with just 20 wins and 51 points, only marginally better than their totals from a season ago.

Ty Emberson and Max Jones scored for the Oilers, who handed the Sharks their 11th straight loss (0-8-3) to end the season. The Sharks finished with a record of 20-50-12.

Also only marginally better for the Sharks? The goals against total, as San Jose allowed a league-worst 312 goals over 82 games, a slightly smaller figure than the 331 they allowed last season during 19-54-9 campaign.

If the Sharks hope to make strides next year and have this be the last season they have the best chance to win the NHL Draft Lottery, it’ll start with how they defend.

A portion of that will come from internal growth from their large cadre of younger players. But help from the Sharks’ front office in that respect would not hurt, as part of the team’s ample salary cap space needs to be used on players – forwards, defensemen, and goalies – who can help San Jose cut down on the number of goals it allows.

No team in the top 16 in the NHL’s overall standings has allowed more than 240 goals this season.

Naturally, changes are coming, with a handful of players in the Sharks’ lineup Wednesday likely playing their last game for the team. That group could include goalie Alexandar Georgiev, defenseman Jan Rutta, and forward Noah Gregor, although those three should only bear so much responsibility.

This was a team effort through and through.

But, the hope amongst the Sharks is that the worst is behind them, and that the organization can start to build back up.

“We’re definitely on the right path. We are,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Wednesday morning.  “I know our win-loss record doesn’t look like that, but we’re on the right path.”

Sharks captain Logan Couture, who officially announced on Tuesday that his playing days are over, was in attendance Wednesday. The Sharks showed a video tribute for Couture, and the sold-out crowd at SAP Center gave him a deserved standing ovation after a 15-year playing career in the NHL.

Couture, arguably the most clutch playoff performer in Sharks history, led San Jose’s playoff team in 2019 with 20 points in 20 games.

Couture said his two favorite memories as a player were in 2016, when he scored an empty-net goal in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final against the St. Louis Blues, sealing the Sharks’ first-ever trip to the Stanley Cup Final.

In Game 7 of the Sharks’ first-round playoff series against the Vegas Golden Knights in 2019, Couture scored twice in the third period to lead an epic comeback after San Jose fell behind by three goals. The Sharks won the game 5-4 in overtime on a goal by Barclay Goodrow.

  • Candidates Can Take UTME Anywhere, JAMB Clarifies

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that candidates who registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are not restricted to taking the examination in their state of registration.

A statement by JAMB spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin on Wednesday, stated that contrary to a recent report, candidates have the flexibility to register anywhere in the country and choose any town nationwide as their examination location.

The board emphasised that candidates must take the exam in their selected town, and those who have registered and selected examination towns outside their state of registration are permitted to sit for the examination in their chosen towns.

JAMB urged the public to disregard the erroneous report and advised candidates to follow official guidelines.

Part of the statement said, “In a recent interview with a NAN reporter, I clarified that candidates are not restricted to taking the examination within their state of registration. They have the flexibility to register anywhere in the country and select any town nationwide from any registration point. Computer-Based Test Centres are clustered according to towns for convenience, allowing candidates to choose the town where they wish to take the examination.

“ For example, if a candidate selects Garki as their examination town, they must take the exam in a centre within the town and cannot be posted outside the town as been alleged at times.

“It is crucial to rectify this misunderstanding to prevent confusion among candidates. Those who have registered for the UTME and selected examination towns outside their state of registration are indeed permitted to sit for the examination in their chosen towns.

“Candidates have the freedom to select their examination town from any location across the country, regardless of their state of registration. For instance, a candidate can register in Lagos and opt to take the examination in Sokoto or any other location.

“This flexibility is designed to accommodate candidates’ preferences and ensure they can choose a location that is convenient for them.

“We urge the public to disregard the erroneous report from NAN in its entirety.”

    By AMANDA SEITZ

WASHINGTON (AP) — Health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. warned that children in the U.S. are being diagnosed with autism at an “alarming rate,” promising on Wednesday to conduct exhaustive studies to identify any environmental factors that may cause the developmental disorder.
