  • Iranian Foreign minister to visit China on Tuesday

    Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit China on Tuesday ahead of the third round of nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, the Iranian foreign ministry announced. The visit underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to revive dialogue on Iran’s nuclear programme, with China having been a key signatory of the 2015 nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

     

    The announcement was made by ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei during a weekly press briefing on Monday. While the Chinese foreign ministry did not confirm the visit when contacted, it stated that China and Iran “maintain exchanges and interactions at different levels and in different fields.”

     

    The 2015 JCPOA deal, intended to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief, was co-signed by the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, Germany, and the European Union. Baqaei stressed that consultations with all original signatories must continue amid efforts to resolve the current diplomatic impasse.

     

    Former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, leading Iran to scale back its commitments under the deal. Since his return to office, Trump has pushed for renewed nuclear negotiations with Tehran, while simultaneously issuing warnings of possible military consequences.

     

    The upcoming round of US-Iran talks, expected to take place on Saturday, will again be mediated by Oman. Araghchi will represent Iran, while Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to lead the American delegation.

     

    Despite enduring heavy US sanctions, Iran has maintained strong economic ties with China, which remains its largest trading partner and primary purchaser of oil. According to Iranian media, nearly 92 percent of Iran’s oil exports are directed to China, often sold at discounted rates.

     

    In 2021, Iran and China signed a 25-year strategic cooperation agreement covering various sectors including energy, infrastructure, security, and telecommunications, further cementing their bilateral relationship amid Western pressure on Tehran.

  • Spy drones may be taken out with ‘force’ by homeowners in Florida

    A new Florida Senate bill would allow homeowners in the state to use “reasonable force” to take down drones that violate a homeowner’s right to privacy.

    According to Fox News, the Florida bill provides additional regulations regarding the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and increases the number of locations that are protected against drone flights throughout the state, including correctional facilities and airports. If approved, the legislation would also allow Florida homeowners to use “reasonable force” to prevent drones from violating their expectation of privacy.

    “No one wants to have a drone sitting over their property, filming what they do for any number of reasons,” Raul Gastesi, a Florida attorney, told Fox News. “Almost every state has laws on privacy, including drones.”

    According to Fox News, it is currently legal for drones to be flown over private residential areas as long as drones remain in unrestricted airspace. However, the outlet noted that drone pilots who cause a nuisance for homeowners could face prosecution for trespassing or stalking.

    Florida’s “Freedom from Unwarranted Surveillance Act” currently prohibits drone operators from using unmanned aircraft to capture photos or videos of private property; however, Fox News reported that the 2024 legislation does not prohibit a drone operator from using unmanned aircraft to capture a live view of private property.

    Fox News reported that under the new Florida Senate legislation, homeowners would be authorized to use “reasonable force” against drones spotted flying over private property; however, the outlet noted that the legislation currently does not provide clarity regarding what is considered “reasonable force,” which could lead to issues with the Federal Aviation Administration.

    U.S. law currently prevents people from shooting down or damaging any aircraft while it is in the air. In a statement to Fox News, the Federal Aviation Administration noted, “It’s illegal under federal law to shoot at an aircraft.” The Federal Aviation Administration added, “A private citizen shooting at any aircraft – including unmanned aircraft – poses a significant safety hazard.”

    Gastesi told Fox News that while certain actions are “permissible” by state law, the same actions may violate federal law. He warned, “Just because your state says you can do it, doesn’t mean the federal government won’t prosecute you for it.” 

    The Federal Aviation Administration warned that if an unmanned aircraft was hit by gunfire, it could result in a crash, “damage to persons or property on the ground,” or a collision with other objects in the air.

    The Federal Aviation Administration added, “Shooting at an unmanned aircraft could result in a civil penalty from the FAA and criminal charges from federal, state or local law enforcement.”

    Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has revealed that the club and Xabi Alonso have a gentlemen’s agreement that would allow him to leave if one of the clubs he played for during his career comes knocking.

    Alonso has been linked with a summer move to Real Madrid as the Spanish club eyes a summer rebuilding after crashing out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

    Carlo Ancelotti’s contract is expected to run out at the end of the season, and Real Madrid are not expected to offer him a new contract, throwing the position open.

    The 43-year-old enjoyed a remarkable career playing for the likes of Real Sociedad, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.

    Alonso is under contract at Bayer Leverkusen until June 2026.

    He has led the club to the Bundesliga title, German Cup and DFB Supercup since taking over in 2022.

    Carro has opened up on the club’s agreement with Alonso while addressing rumours about his future at the club.

    He said, “We have a gentlemen’s agreement that if any of the teams he has played for call, we will sit down and talk, and we won’t put any obstacles in his way.

    “Last year, Xabi had offers from important clubs, but he assured us that he would stay with us. Maybe it is a bit early to talk, as the season is still ongoing.

    “Maybe things can happen. So we have given ourselves some time to decide … We are very calm, and there is not much more to say other than that.”

    However, the CEO confirmed that the club has a good relationship with Real Madrid while maintaining that there has been no contact from the Spanish club for Alonso.

    Carro said, “We are not naive, but the position of the coach is very important for a club, and we are preparing for the next season with him.

    “We have been working with him every day; he is fully involved in that preparation. We are a very professional club, and we have to be prepared for everything.

    “If at the end of the day there is interest from another club and he is interested in going to that club, we have a relationship that we would have to talk about.

    “Xabi’s will is important in this; he respects us a lot, and we respect Xabi.”

    In Alonso’s third season in charge, Leverkusen trail league leaders Bayern by eight points with four matches remaining. They were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich at the round-of-16 stage.

    He has led the club to 18 wins, 10 draws, and two defeats in 30 Bundesliga matches this season.

  • Pope died of stroke, heart attack, coma, Vatican says

    Pope Francis died April 21 after suffering a stroke and heart attack, said the director of Vatican City State’s department of health services. The pope had also gone into a coma.

    “I certify that His Holiness Francis, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936, resident of Vatican City, Vatican citizen, passed away at 7:35 a.m. on 4/21/2025 in his apartment at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, Vatican City, from: cerebral stroke, coma, irreversible cardiovascular collapse,” said the statement, signed by the director, Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, and published by the Vatican press office.

    The doctor said the pope also had a history of: “a previous episode of acute respiratory failure due to polymicrobial bilateral pneumonia; multiple bronchiectases; arterial hypertension; and type II diabetes.”

    A heart monitor or ECG was used to ascertain his death, that is, that there was no longer any heart activity, he wrote on the signed declaration.

    The doctor also read the statement aloud during a special prayer service that began at 8 p.m. local time April 21 in the late pope’s residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae.

    U.S. Cardinal Kevin J. Farrell, chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church, presided over the rite, which included the formal verification of the pope’s death, the placement of his body in a coffin, and its transfer to the chapel on the first floor of his residence. The pope died in his third-floor apartment at 7:35 a.m. April 21.

    Others present at the closed-door ceremony included Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals; the late pope’s aides, assistants and members of the papal household; Dr. Arcangeli; and Dr. Luigi Carbone, deputy director of the Vatican’s health department and the pope’s personal physician.

    This was the first of three rites that are divided into three “stations” based on the place they occur: “at home, in the Vatican basilica and at the burial place,” according to the “Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis” (“Funeral Rites of the Roman Pontiff”). There will be separate services for transferring the body to St. Peter’s Basilica, the funeral, the burial and the memorial Masses that follow the funeral for the next eight days.

    The Vatican press office confirmed that, according to instructions guiding what happens after the death of a pope, the funeral and burial should take place “between the fourth and sixth day after death,” which would be between April 25 and 27.

    The exact date will be determined at a meeting of all the cardinals able to reach the Vatican immediately after the papal death. The first meeting was being held at 9 a.m. April 22 in the Vatican Synod Hall.

    The press office said the coffin would probably be brought to St. Peter’s Basilica April 23 for public viewing and prayer before the funeral. Instead of lying on a catafalque, that is, a kind of decorated platform, the body will be placed inside a zinc-lined coffin, which will remain open until the night before the funeral, which will be celebrated by Cardinal Re.

  • Man arrested for selling adulterated cooking oil in Abuja

    Vigilantes operating in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested a man accused of adulterating cooking oil and selling it to the public.

     

    The commander of the VGN in the area, John Samuel, said the suspect, identified as Peter Amos, was arrested on Friday night at the Tipper garage area in Kabusa district, where he resides and also used to carry out the nefarious act. 

     

    In a confessional statement in a video obtained by Daily Trust on Sunday, April 20, the suspect was seen narrating how he packaged the fake cooking oil in the five-litre gallons that had been filled with water, to which he added a little quantity of cooking oil.

     

    “I sell one gallon at the rate of N10,000 or less than that amount in some instances,” the suspect said. 

     

    He also claimed that he used to learn mechanic work in the past before he quit the business, and resorted to the fraudulent venture.

     

    He promised to produce the other person who worked with him in the fraudulent act.

     

    The vigilante commander said the arrest of the suspect came after complaints by some residents, who accused him of cheating them through a fraudulent act.

     

    The commander said he had since been handed over to the police in the area for further investigation.

     

    The police in the area confirmed the arrest but declined further comment.

  • Daughter convicted of stabbing parents, 1 fatally, after being told she’d have to move out

    MARION COUNTY, Fla. (TCN) — A 33-year-old woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for fatally stabbing her father and attempting to kill her mother after being told to move out.

    The Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office announced that on April 16, a jury found Christina Adams guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. A judge subsequently sentenced Adams to two life sentences for the murder of 74-year-old Richard Langer and the attempted murder of another victim, identified by the Miami Herald as the defendant’s mother.

    According to prosecutors, on Sept. 16, 2022, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible stabbing at a home in Ocala and found the victims with stab wounds. As responders rendered aid, Langer told authorities that his daughter had stabbed them. Law enforcement issued an alert bulletin, and officials performed a traffic stop on Adams’ vehicle. Adams’ wife was also in the car at the time.

    Investigators took Adams and her wife into custody for questioning. The spouse reportedly said she had finished errands and then met her wife at the grocery store. Adams’ wife also allegedly said she “did not notice anything out of the norm for the defendant, nor did the defendant mention any altercation prior.”

    The state attorney’s office said Adams’ statement was not consistent with her wife’s. The defendant eventually admitted that she “attacked both victims after getting upset for being told she’d have to move out.”

    According to the Miami Herald, Adams was living in a converted studio apartment on her parents’ property. Her father allegedly told her to move out so her other sibling could move in. On the morning of the stabbing, Adams reportedly went to the main house to do laundry, and her father told her she needed to move out by the next day.

    Adams allegedly went back into her apartment, put on gloves and shoe covers, and retrieved a “Taser pen” and knife. Adams reportedly said she went back into the main house, shocked her father with the Taser pen, then stabbed him in the arm. Her mother allegedly heard the commotion and went into the room to check on the situation. Then, Adams stabbed her in the chest.

    Adams purportedly claimed she then stabbed her father in the chest multiple times and assumed both her parents were dead. Adams allegedly washed the clothes she was wearing and cleaned the knife with bleach before going to the grocery store to meet her wife.

    The Miami Herald reports that Langer called 911 to report the stabbing and said his wife was “fading fast.” The couple was transported to the hospital, where they underwent surgery. Langer died from his injuries two days later.

    Langer was reportedly a veteran and pilot and leaves behind nine children.

    In a statement, Fifth Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant State Attorney Walter Forgie said, “Our fundamental duty is to seek justice, and in pursuing this goal, we strive to provide closure for the victims and their families while ensuring accountability for those responsible. Today, as difficult as it has been for the victims and their families, I believe we’ve gotten just that.”
