  • BREAKING: Lagos Court Discharges Alabi Quadri, Young Nigerian Who Stood Before Peter Obi’s Convoy In Viral Photo

The Apapa Magistrate Court, Court 9 sitting at Orege, Ajegunle – Sikiru Adagun Courthouse, has discharged and acquitted Alabi Quadri, the young Nigerian who became a national symbol of courage during the 2023 general elections, for standing boldly in front of the convoy of then-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

He was discharged and acquitted of conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery.

The court held that he has no case to answer.

Quadri was brought to court on Thursday, April 17, 2025, after spending months in Kirikiri Prison, Lagos.

The Nigerian Correctional Service produced Quadri at the Apapa Magistrate Court, located at Orege, Ajegunle—Sikiru Adagun Courthouse (Court No. 9).

Quadri’s case was initially slated for a hearing on April 28, 2025.

However, human rights lawyer and activist Inibehe Effiong had revealed that both he and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) requested that the date be moved forward, and the court granted the application.

Quadri gained widespread attention after a viral video showed him, a teenage boy at the time, fearlessly standing before Peter Obi’s campaign convoy—a moment many Nigerians interpreted as a symbol of youthful defiance and hope during a tense election period.

SaharaReporters reported that Effiong revealed that Alabi’s recent painful descent into the Nigerian prison system was not due to any major crime but rather a result of prolonged malice and resentment harboured by some self-acclaimed ‘area boys’ (thugs) in his neighbourhood.

According to the lawyer, these individuals felt entitled to a portion of the unexpected attention and goodwill, including financial support, that Alabi received following his moment in the spotlight during the 2023 presidential campaign.

Effiong, who recently visited the Apapa Magisterial Court in Lagos alongside Alabi’s mother and legal colleagues, stated that Alabi’s journey to Kirikiri prison was not only heartbreaking but appeared to be the outcome of a vendetta fuelled by local ‘area boys’ who felt entitled to the financial support Alabi received after his viral moment.

Effiong revealed that Alabi was abducted in January near his home while returning from work by the ‘area boys’ who had been threatening him.

They allegedly took him to Amukoko Police Station (popularly known as Pako Police Station) and accused him of being involved in street fights.

However, Alabi was then arraigned before a Magistrate Court along with four other individuals, said to be complete strangers to him, on allegations of conspiracy to commit armed robbery with cutlasses.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged victims were robbed of N579,000, comprising cash and four mobile phones.

Effiong also emphasised that despite being a minor, Alabi had been detained with adults at Kirikiri since January, pending legal advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

  • 30% thinner, same 5,000mAh battery and 45W charge

Samsung is launching the Galaxy M56, a thin mid-range smartphone arriving on April 23 in India. While the flagship Galaxy S25 Edge is arriving later this year, the M56 is already gaining buzz for being the slimmest phone in its class.

Samsung Galaxy M56 Launches April 23 – Slim, Feature-Packed, and Affordable

The M56 is just 7.2mm thick and weighs 180g. For comparison, the Galaxy A56 is 7.4mm thick and weighs 198g. The predecessor M55 was 7.8mm thick but shared the same weight as the two. All three phones have 6.7-inch displays and 5,000mAh batteries.

The 6.74-inch Super AMOLED+ display on the M56 is a highlight. It is 33% brighter and has 36% thinner bezels than the M55. It has 1080p+ resolution and a buttery-smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

Internally, the phone is driven by the Exynos 1480 chipset, which launched last year. It’s not as fast as the newer Exynos 1580 on the A56, but it still acquits itself well. The processor is built on a 4nm process and has AMD RDNA 2 graphics. It also boasts a larger vapor chamber—33% larger than the M55—for better cooling.

The M56 comes with 8GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. There is no microSD card slot, but there is dual SIM and 5G support (bands: 1, 3, 5, 8, 28, 40, 41, 78). It also has Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and a USB Type-C port. No NFC, unfortunately.

    Galaxy M56

The camera setup is versatile. It features a 50MP main camera with OIS and 4K video at 30fps with 10-bit HDR. It lacks a telephoto lens, but the main camera features 2x in-sensor zoom. At the back are also an 8MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera. The front camera is 12MP.

It comes with Samsung’s Galaxy AI capabilities. They help with photo editing, object removal, and creating clip art.

Battery life is decent, with a 5,000mAh battery and quick 45W charging. The phone is wrapped in Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front and rear. Samsung says it is four times more scratch-resistant than the M55 and will survive drops from 2 meters.

The M56 will get six years of software and security updates, until 2030. It comes in Light Green and Black and will retail for ₹25,000 (about $295 / €260) on Amazon India.

  • Lagos taskforce busts drug peddlers in estate, market raids, recovers illicit substances, cash

A targeted enforcement operation by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce has led to the arrest of 20 individuals in Gowon Estate and Egbeda, notorious for illicit drug peddling.

The raids, conducted on Wednesday, resulted in the recovery of various illegal substances and cash believed to be proceeds from their criminal activities.

The operation focused on known black spots within Gowon Estate, including the 31 Road intersection, Wole Omo-Osho, and Idoani Streets, as well as the Egbeda market area situated along the Egbeda-Idimu Road.

The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources confirmed in a statement that makeshift stalls located at the junction of Idoani Street, identified through intelligence reports as safe havens for drug sale and consumption by criminal elements, were completely dismantled during the operation.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, lauded the task force’s swift action on his official X handle on Thursday, issuing a strong warning to criminals operating under the guise of informal trading.

“In a swift enforcement operation yesterday, our Environmental Taskforce team dismantled makeshift structures in dark spots used for peddling illicit drugs around Gowon Estate and Egbeda. 20 suspects were arrested, and various illicit substances and cash were recovered. These criminal hideouts will no longer be tolerated in Lagos State,” Wahab posted.

He further emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to sanitizing public spaces and eradicating all forms of illegality that threaten the safety and well-being of Lagos residents. “We have zero tolerance for criminal activities in our communities. Our resolve to reclaim and secure Lagos for law-abiding citizens is unwavering,” Wahab stated.

The task force affirmed that all individuals apprehended during the raid will face legal prosecution in court. Officials also reassured the public that similar operations will be sustained as part of the state’s intensified efforts to create safer public spaces, free from the influence of criminal networks utilizing informal settlements as cover for their illicit activities.

Wahab urged residents to actively support the government’s initiatives by reporting any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.

  • New seven-a-side tournament on the cards for Manchester United

Manchester United’s men’s team is gearing up for a high-profile post-season tour in Asia, where they’ll face top clubs from the Asian continent.

These matches, scheduled for late May, will be held in Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Manchester United have confirmed that they are set to take on ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur on May 28 and another match in Hong Kong on May 30, with an estimated £8 million expected to be raised, as reported by Chris Wheeler.

This is part of their preparations for the upcoming season, aiming to strengthen team cohesion and showcase their talent to a global audience.

The decision follows a series of cost-cutting measures implemented by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who took a stake in the club last year.

These measures have been critical as Manchester United faces the possibility of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, given their underwhelming performance this season.

While the men’s team will be traveling and competing, the women’s team is also setting their sights on an exciting new venture in the off-season.

Marc Skinner’s Manchester United Women are set to compete in a groundbreaking seven-a-side tournament, offering a massive £2 million prize for the winners, as reported by The Telegraph.

This tournament, called the World Sevens Football (W7F), will take place in Portugal from May 21st to May 23rd. United, having had a stellar season so far with a third consecutive FA Cup final appearance and sitting third in the Women’s Super League, will join seven other elite teams in this inaugural event.

The prize money for the W7F tournament’s winner — £1.9 million — far exceeds the Champions League (£850,000) and FA Cup (£430,000) winnings, adding even more incentive for the team to push for the top spot.

With Bayern Munich also expected to compete, the stakes are incredibly high.

Each participating club will have the flexibility to choose their squad, and United are expected to bring a strong lineup to make a serious push for the grand prize.

The tournament will feature two groups of four teams, with the top two in each group advancing to the semi-finals.

The games will be fast-paced, with matches lasting just 30 minutes, split into two halves, and extra-time in case of a draw.

Despite concerns about player welfare with such a demanding format, the enormous financial reward makes it hard for any team to resist.

Funded by U.S. philanthropist Jennifer Mackesy, the W7F promises to be a thrilling competition for Manchester United Women, potentially bringing in a significant cash injection for the club.

  • Newly discovered magnetar is traversing our galaxy from an unknown place

Magnetars are neutron stars with immense magnetic fields, a trillion times stronger than Earth’s. SGR 0501+4516, one of the roughly 30 known magnetars in the Milky Way, was discovered in 2008 after NASA’s Swift Observatory detected gamma-ray flashes at the galaxy’s edge. Unlike typical magnetars, which are believed to form from supernova explosions, SGR 0501+4516 may have a different origin.

Its proximity to the supernova remnant HB9 once suggested a supernova birth. However, with only 80 arcminutes separating them—about the width of a pinky finger at arm’s length—its true origin remains a mystery. This unique magnetar might even offer clues to the enigmatic fast radio bursts observed in the universe.

A decade-long study using Hubble has questioned the link between magnetar SGR 0501+4516 and the nearby supernova remnant HB9. Researchers tracked the magnetar’s faint infrared glow in 2010, 2012, and 2020, and by aligning Hubble’s observations with Gaia’s stellar map, they confirmed that its motion rules out any connection to HB9. Tracing its trajectory also showed no ties to other supernova remnants or massive star clusters.

This raises new possibilities about the magnetar’s origin. It might be older than its estimated 20,000 years or could have formed through other processes. Potential origins include the merger of two smaller neutron stars or accretion-induced collapse, where a white dwarf in a binary system gains enough gas from its companion to trigger a collapse into a neutron star.

Newly discovered magnetar emits regular pulses of light

Usually, a white dwarf in a binary system explodes after triggering nuclear reactions, leaving no remains. However, researchers believe that under certain conditions, it may instead collapse into a neutron star, possibly explaining the magnetar SGR 0501+4516’s origin.

SGR 0501+4516 is the best candidate for a magnetar formed through merger or accretion-induced collapse in our galaxy. This process may also explain fast radio bursts, often from older star populations without recent supernova activity.

Studying magnetar birth and formation is vital for understanding powerful cosmic events like gamma-ray bursts, super-luminous supernovae, and fast radio bursts.
