  • US abortion numbers steady despite rising restrictions

In 2024, there were more than 1 million abortions in the US for the second year in a row, according to the Guttmacher Institute. (Natalie Behring/Getty Images via CNN Newsource)

    By Deidre McPhillips, CNN

(CNN) — The abortion policy landscape continues to shift in the United States, with key changes in how and where women accessed care last year. Although some states with new laws saw dramatic shifts, the number of abortions provided nationwide held steady, with significant shares of women turning to virtual clinics and traveling across state lines for care.

In 2024, there were more than 1 million abortions in the US for the second year in a row, according to new data from the Guttmacher Institute, a research and policy organization focused on sexual and reproductive health that supports abortion rights. When abortions surpassed 1 million in 2023, it marked the highest US abortion rate in more than a decade and a 10% jump from 2020, Guttmacher says.

Since the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision revoked the federal right to abortion in June 2022, more than a dozen states have enacted bans, and others have severely restricted access. Amid this patchwork of laws, trends in abortions have varied widely by state.

Between 2023 and 2024, the number of abortions increased or stayed the same in 25 states but decreased in 11 states, Guttmacher data shows. Fourteen states with abortion bans in 2024 were not included in the analysis.

After Dobbs, Florida had become a key abortion access point for people in the South amid widespread restrictions in the region. In 2023, 1 of every 3 abortions in the South – and about 1 in every 12 nationwide – happened in Florida. But a six-week ban took effect in the state in May, driving abortions down 14%. There were about 12,000 fewer abortions in Florida in 2024 than there were in 2023, according to Guttmacher estimates.

The effects of a six-week ban enacted in South Carolina in September 2023 also continue to ripple, with 3,500 fewer abortions provided in the state in 2024 than in 2023.

Abortions provided in Virginia, meanwhile, increased about 5,500 between 2024 and 2023 – the vast majority of which were provided to people who traveled in from a different state.

“The latest abortion travel data are a clear reminder that the impact of a state’s abortion policies extends far beyond its borders,” Kimya Forouzan, principal state policy adviser at the Guttmacher Institute, said in a statement. “For instance, the substantial increase in out-of-state abortion patients in Virginia can likely be attributed to Florida’s six-week ban that went into effect in May 2024. Despite being hundreds of miles away, Virginia is the second-closest state for Florida residents to seek an abortion after six weeks’ gestation and the closest without a mandatory waiting period. This patchwork approach to abortion legality has only exacerbated inequity in abortion access across the country.”

Overall in 2024, about 155,100 people crossed state lines for an abortion, representing about 15% – or more than 1 out of every 7 – of abortions provided in states without total bans, according to Guttmacher data. About as many people traveled across state borders for an abortion in 2023, which is nearly double the number who did so in 2020, before the Dobbs decision.

Illinois has been a key access point, with about 35,000 abortions provided to out-of-state patients in 2024, representing nearly 40% of abortions provided in the state overall, Guttmacher data shows, and North Carolina, Kansas and New Mexico each provided care to more than 10,000 people seeking an abortion in 2024.

“While these data cannot capture the obstacles that many abortion seekers faced or those who were unable to access care, the findings do underscore the determination and dedication of abortion patients, providers, advocates and support organizations,” Isaac Maddow-Zimet, data scientist for the Guttmacher Institute, said in a statement.

In Illinois, the state government, abortion providers and advocates have helped build a “robust infrastructure to expand care and connect traveling patients with funding and navigational support,” the new Guttmacher report notes. “Obtaining abortion care out of state is often only possible because of the intensive efforts of providers, abortion funds, practical support organizations and patients themselves.”

Expanded access to clinics that provide medication abortion through telehealth has also contributed to the rise in abortions in the US, according to the Guttmacher report. About 14% of abortions in 2024 were provided by online-only clinics, up from 10% in 2023 – or an increase of about 40,000 abortions.

This figure does not include abortions that were provided to people under shield laws that allow providers in certain states where abortion remains legal to prescribe medication abortion drugs via telehealth to people living in states with bans or restrictions. Other research suggests that more than 40,000 people accessed telehealth abortions under shield laws in the second half of 2023.

Telehealth is “not an available or preferred option for everyone seeking an abortion,” Guttmacher says, and the majority of abortions in 2024 were still provided via brick-and-mortar facilities. But medication abortion is the most common option in the US, representing nearly two-thirds of all abortions nationwide.

In March, US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary told senators during his confirmation hearing that he plans to build an “expert coalition” to review data on mifepristone, one of the two drugs used in a medication abortion.

“I have no preconceived plans on mifepristone policy except to take a solid, hard look at the data and to meet with the professional career scientists who have reviewed the data at the FDA, and to build an expert coalition to review the ongoing data, which is required to be collected as a part of the REMS program, the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy,” Makary said in the hearing. “If we’re going to collect data, I believe we should look at it.”

Mifepristone was approved by the FDA decades ago and has been shown to be safe and effective, but it has been the focus of abortion restrictions in some states since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

  • Brighton transfer fee for Bart Verbruggen to ward off Manchester United

Andre Onana’s time at Manchester United has been nothing short of a nightmare since arriving from Inter Milan last summer.

The Cameroon international has faced fierce criticism throughout the season.

Most recently from Nemanja Matic, who labelled Onana as “one of the worst” goalkeepers to play for Manchester United.

Onana was even dropped for the recent defeat to Newcastle, with coaches hoping the break would help clear his head.

With Onana’s future in doubt, United have now begun looking at potential replacements.

Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen has emerged as a key target.

Initial interest in the Brighton man was revealed on CentreDevils earlier this month.

The 22-year-old has been tracked closely by United scouts across his performances for both Brighton and the Netherlands.

The Red Devils view him as a possible long-term solution.

Brighton expected to command “massive fee” for Bart Verbruggen

Former United chief scout Mick Brown has confirmed the club’s interest, telling Football Insider:

“Bart Verbruggen is going to be one to keep an eye on for Man United.”

“Somebody said to me a while ago when Ten Hag was there: ‘He will be the next United goalkeeper’.”

“The club rate him very highly and they’ve been keeping an eye on his performances both for Brighton and the Netherlands over the last couple of seasons.”

“So he’s a long-term target and one they feel would be an upgrade on what they’ve got.”

“The goalkeeping position is becoming a priority for Man United because they’re concerned about Onana.”

“Verbruggen is one of the names on their list.

“So it’s one I’m sure they will explore and see if they can get it over the line.”

However, Brighton are reluctant to lose Verbruggen.

The Seagulls are expected to demand a “massive fee” to ward off interest from Old Trafford this summer.

The specific asking price isn’t currently known.

United’s desperate need to bring in a proven goalkeeper is already publicly known.

Therefore making their task at hand even more difficult.

Whether United fans will be happy to see United splash plenty of money on a goalkeeper remains to be seen.

  • Judicial Watch Lawsuit: Did Democratic Arizona Attorney General Announce ‘Investigation’ of Trump to Sway Election?

(Washington, DC)Judicial Watch announced an open records lawsuit revealing that Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes seems to have used her office for political purposes in threatening a prosecution of President Trump on the eve of the 2024 presidential election (Judicial Watch Inc. v. Kris Mayes et al (No. CV 2025 00675)). Only one document was found (and kept secret) relating to a criminal investigation, while dozens of media-related documents were revealed.

In an October 31, 2024, interview with Tucker Carlson at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, Trump said of Cheney: “She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face. They’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, ‘Oh, gee, well let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.’ “

On November 1, 2024, Mayes, a Democrat, said during the taping of the Channel 12 “Sunday Square-Off” news show: “I have already asked my criminal division chief to start looking at that statement, analyzing it for whether it qualifies as a death threat under Arizona’s laws.” She conducted multiple media interviews within days of the election.

Mayes’ office provided comments to CBS, NBC, CNN, AZ Family, Forbes, Fox, News Nation, Sky View Networks, Law and Crime News Network, Newsweek, and Reuters in what appears to be an attempt to paint Donald Trump as a criminal shortly before the election.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton made the following statement about the lawsuit’s findings:

The records show the threatened “investigation” of President Trump was merely an oral request from the Arizona General Mayes to a top staffer to evaluate the Liz Cheney statement.  The only record of the investigation that exists is a 3-page memo from the Attorney General’s criminal division chief back to Mayes, which the Court reviewed in camera and determined was protected attorney work product and therefore can be withheld.  Presumably (and probably from media sources) the memo declined to open a more substantial investigation or initiate a prosecution.

The lack of records further supports our theory that the investigation—purportedly launched on the Friday before the 2024 presidential election and dropped shortly thereafter—was a sham to try to influence the outcome of the election in an important swing state. This is yet another example of “lawfare” abuse targeting Trump.

Mayes ended the “investigation” on November 13, 2024, telling the Arizona Republic that Trump’s comment “very likely may have been an effort to intimidate Cheney” but the investigation showed there was “no reasonable likelihood that we could obtain a conviction for Trump’s statements. We think it’s equally likely a reasonable person could conclude Trump was discussing war, and Liz Cheney not wanting to go to war.”

The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court for the State of Arizona Maricopa County this past January after Mayes’ office failed to comply with a November 12, 2024, Arizona Public Records Act request by Judicial Watch for records regarding Mayes’ office and/or the criminal division chief analyzing Trump’s statement as qualifying as a death threat; the determination whether the statement was analyzed to be a violation of Arizona and/or federal law; the costs to carry out the investigation; and any documents in which Mayes addresses the limits of free speech as addressed in the First Amendment.

Additionally, Judicial Watch asked for records regarding the dismissal of criminal charges against Arizona citizen Rebekah Massie, who was arrested during an August 20, 2024, Surprise City Council meeting after she criticized a proposed pay increase for the city attorney.

Maricopa County Judge Gerald Williams dismissed with prejudice the trespassing charge against Massie, writing: “No branch of any federal, state, or local government in this country should ever attempt to control the content of political speech. In this case, the government did so in a manner that was objectively outrageous.”

  • ‘Home Alone 2’ director Chris Columbus wants Trump cameo removed

If “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” director Chris Columbus had his way, Donald Trump would be removed from the classic film.

The award-winning filmmaker, also known for “Mrs. Doubtfire” and the “Harry Potter” film series, said the President’s 7 second appearance in the 1992 movie has “become this curse. It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone.”

“I can’t cut it,” he said in a new San Francisco Chronicle interview, adding: “If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country. I’ll be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so I’ll have to go back to Italy or something.”

“Home Alone 2″ — starring Macaulay Culkin as a precocious child who mistakenly arrives in New York City instead of his family’s vacation destination of Miami, Florida — was a box office blockbuster, raking in $359 million in theaters. The film and its prequel, “Home Alone,” are considered classic holiday fare.

For a few seconds in the movie, the youngster briefly meets Trump, then a real estate mogul, at the Plaza Hotel. The future star of “The Apprentice” owned the luxurious property at the time.

Columbus previously stated that Trump more or less “bullied his way into the movie.”

“We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie’,” Columbus told Business Insider in 2020. “So we agreed to put him in the movie, and when we screened it for the first time the oddest thing happened: People cheered when Trump showed up on screen. So I said to my editor, ‘Leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience.’”

The cameo, however, hasn’t aged well for some fans.

During the third year of his first presidential term, the film was edited to remove the Trump scene during reairings in Canada.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation confirmed in 2019 that the scene was axed to make room for commercials.

  • Tax Reform Insufficient To Achieve 18% GDP Target – LCCI

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has stated that while the Federal Government’s proposed Tax Reform Bill is a step in the right direction, it remains inadequate on its own to achieve the ambitious 18 per cent tax-to-GDP ratio target outlined in the 2025 budget.

This was part of the highlight of the Chamber’s quarterly economic review and advocacy engagement with the business community and policymakers.

Speaking on addressing critical business environment issues in Nigeria, the President of LCCI, Mr Gabriel Idahosa, emphasised that the proposed reforms, though necessary, must be part of a broader and more strategic fiscal overhaul to make a significant impact on revenue generation, economic growth, and macroeconomic stability.

According to the Chamber, Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio stood at 7.9 per cent in 2022, significantly trailing the African average of 16.0 per cent.

This substantial gap underscores the urgency for a more efficient and inclusive tax system that balances revenue goals with economic competitiveness and ease of doing business.

LCCI stressed that any meaningful improvement must be complemented by efficient tax administration, increased compliance, reduction in multiplicity of taxes, and the expansion of the tax base through inclusive policies.

Beyond taxation, the LCCI raised the alarm over Nigeria’s deepening food insecurity and persistent inflationary pressure, which it says continues to strain millions of households.

Although there have been marginal improvements in certain areas, food prices remain prohibitively high, largely due to factors such as currency devaluation, the removal of fuel subsidies, and broader macroeconomic instability.

“Economic hardship has made even basic food items unaffordable for many Nigerians. Inflation is eroding purchasing power and worsening food insufficiency,” Idahosa said.

He called for immediate and coordinated intervention by federal and state governments to address the root causes of food inflation and to proactively manage the looming threat of nationwide flooding, which could further disrupt food supply and damage critical infrastructure.

On the real estate front, the Chamber highlighted the sector’s struggle with escalating construction costs, forex volatility, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and excessive land-related fees, particularly in Lagos and other high-demand states.

Developers, the LCCI noted, are further burdened by unofficial “soft costs” and rising approval expenses, which inflate project budgets and deter investment.

While the push for monthly or quarterly rental payments may relieve tenants, the Chamber warned that without parallel support for landlords and investors, such policies could prove counterproductive.

According to the Chamber, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of the Nigerian economy, are also facing intense operational difficulties.

These include widespread insecurity, erratic power supply, high electricity tariffs, and unresolved issues around metering.

The Chamber added that numerous small businesses have been forced to shut down or reduce their workforce due to rising input and energy costs.

“MSMEs are struggling to survive under current conditions,” Idahosa said. “We urge the government to offer targeted electricity subsidies, enforce proper refund mechanisms for meter-related payments, and clarify energy billing frameworks to protect small businesses.”

  • Klay Thompson gets redemption for Warriors’ play-in dud as Mavs beat Kings

    By JOSH DUBOW

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Klay Thompson scored 16 of his 23 points in Dallas’ dominant second quarter to get redemption for his dud for the Warriors in Sacramento a year ago, helping the Mavericks beat the Kings 120-106 on Wednesday night to advance in the play-in tournament.

One year to the day when Thompson missed all 10 shots in his final game for Golden State in a play-in loss in Sacramento, Thompson fueled the win with four 3-pointers in Dallas’ 44-point second quarter. That turned the game into a laugher and kept the Mavericks’ chaotic season alive for at least one more game.

“Human nature, when you end a season on a sour note like that you want to come out and prove people wrong,” Thompson said. “But I thought I did a good job to start the game of trying to dish, rebound, play defense. The shots came to me after that.”

Dallas advanced to play at Memphis on Friday night for the chance to get into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the West. The winner of that game will open the playoffs on Sunday at top-seeded Oklahoma City. The Grizzlies lost the 7-vs.-8 play-in game to the Warriors on Tuesday night.

As for the Kings, soon after the game, the team and general manager Monte McNair agreed to part ways. A person familiar with the decision said the sides mutually agreed on the breakup. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t announced the move.

The Mavs have undergone a rough season after trading young superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a seismic trade that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas and vitriol from the fan base to the organization.

Star point guard Kyrie Irving went down with a season-ending knee injury shortly after that trade, ending any realistic hopes of another deep playoff run after making it to the NBA Finals last season.

“We’ve had a tumultuous season to say the least,” Thompson said. “The injury bug has struck us like I’ve never seen before. But we’re still here playing postseason basketball. We can really give the city of Dallas some hope, especially if we go to Memphis and repeat this type of performance.”

Dallas opened the second quarter with a 20-6 run fueled by back-to-back 3s from Thompson. Thompson hit two more 3s later in the quarter as the Mavs built the lead to 23 points at the half, removing any drama.

“We shot it very well, get stops on defense and were able to run,” said Davis, who led Dallas with 27 points. “Offense was clicking. We had what, 44 in the quarter? We played with a lot of pace and opened up the game.”

DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points for the Kings, and and Zach LaVine added 20.

It was a disappointing ending to an underwhelming season for the Kings, who fired coach Mike Brown in December and traded star point guard De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio in February. It all led to Sacramento missing the playoffs for the 18th time in 19 seasons, raising questions about the team’s future.

“This is where I want to be,” interim coach Doug Christie said. “You guys know that. I need to finish what I started.”

  • Actor Haley Joel Osment arrested for public intoxication at California ski resort

Haley Joel Osment may soon be facing criminal charges following an arrest earlier this month at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California. The actor was taken into custody on April 8 after authorities received a call just before 2 p.m. reporting an allegedly intoxicated individual on the resort grounds.

According to official documents obtained by TMZ, ski patrol officers were already attending to Osment when law enforcement arrived. He was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. Authorities have sent the substance to a lab for analysis to determine its specific nature.

Osment was booked and later released, pending a decision from the Mono County District Attorney on whether to pursue charges.

Sources close to the actor suggest he has been under significant stress in recent months. Osment reportedly lost his home and belongings in the Altadena wildfire and has faced ongoing difficulties with his insurance provider, including a recent claim denial for a replacement residence.

This is not the actor’s first brush with alcohol-related legal issues. In 2006, Osment was involved in a serious crash after driving under the influence, sustaining shoulder and rib injuries when his vehicle struck a brick pillar. He later pleaded no contest to charges of DUI and marijuana possession and received a sentence that included three years’ probation, alcohol rehabilitation, mandatory AA meetings, and a $1,500 fine.

  • BREAKING: Former Enugu APC Chairman Ben Nwoye Resigns, Cites Party’s Disintegration

Dr. Ben Nwoye, the former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, has officially resigned from the party, attributing his decision to the collapse of leadership within the state.

Nwoye, who announced his resignation at a media briefing in Enugu on Thursday, expressed frustration over internal conflicts, vindictive politics, and disregard for core principles.

He noted similar issues in other Southeast states and questioned the party’s direction. He added that his decision was made after extensive consultations with grassroots followers, choosing to “move on and discover a new frontier.”

In a letter to the Chairman of the APC Amurri Ward in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nwoye — a former Secretary and Publicity Secretary of the Forum of APC State Chairmen, as well as a former Federal Commissioner at the FCCPC representing the South East — lamented that all that remains of the “Broom” are two skeletal structures.

The letter obtained by SaharaReporters partly reads: “With deep sense of responsibility I write to inform you that I hereby resign as a member of All Progressives Congress. My resignation is as a result of disintegration of the leadership of party in Enugu State.

“The bunch of “Broom” which we painstakingly tied together in 2013 at a time when we were called unprintable names has loosened and permanently scattered. All efforts made by the Party Elders to gather the “Broom” and reassemble it has failed. In its current form, further attempts to reassemble the “Broom” in Enugu State is no longer practicable.

“What is left of the “Broom” are two skeletal structures. One of each structures is held by two strong men. One of the strong men claims Chairmanship by judicial pronouncement. While the other claims Chairmanship through arrogant disobedience of the same judicial pronouncement aided by the silent approval of the National Leadership.”

“The leadership of the party in South East are fully engaged in vindictive politics,” it adds.

“They are not interested in adding another State to the two States the party controls in the South East. As far as they are concerned, the supremacy of the party is measured by how low they can go to oppress their perceived political enemies. These they do, without recourse to the core principles upon which APC stands -Justice, Peace and Unity. To say the least, the Zonal leadership in the South East has lost direction.”

It further reads, “In the meantime, the National leadership of the Party is basking on the euphoria of power, being the party under which the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the majority of the members of the National Assembly were elected.

“The APC National Leadership has therefore maintained willful blindness. Hence, allowing the warring factions to self-destruct and strangulate the party in Enugu State.

“To worsen the situation, the APC National leadership treats Party Elders calls for reconciliation with disdain and disrespect. Loyal party members calling for party unity are treated like conquered and captured political warriors.

“In other words, loyal party members who do not agree with the position of the APC National leadership on the division that exists within the entire party structure in Enugu State have been transformed into prisoners of political war. They have been placed in political captivity in Enugu State.

“On the basis stated above, I engaged in extensive consultations with my grassroots followers and I have come to the conclusion that it is time to move on.

“I am not a political prisoner. I have never been and I can never be. The situation in Enugu State is not an isolated case. For example, in Anambra State the National Leadership did not care to hear the voice of H.E. Senator Chris Ngige before awarding the Gubernatorial ticket to the highest bidder? In Abia State, where are the likes of Dr Ikechi Emenike and Ayim Iyerenye? In Ebonyi State where is the voice of Senator Julius Ucha. And in Imo State where is H.E. Owelle Rochas Okorocha and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu. These are great men who risked it all and made tremendous sacrifices to ensure that APC gained ground in the South East. Today, their opinions no longer matter.

“So, it is time to move on and discover a new frontier.”
