  • 'Why them and not me,' pope asks after Holy Thursday visit to prison

While he did not celebrate Mass or wash the feet of inmates, Pope Francis made his customary Holy Thursday visit to a detention facility, arriving at Rome’s Regina Coeli jail at about 3 p.m. April 17.

The pope was welcomed by Claudia Clementi, the jail’s director, and met with about 70 inmates in the building’s rotunda, a space where various wings of the jail intersect. The inmates who joined the pope are those who regularly participate in the jail’s religious education program, the Vatican press office said.

In 2018 the pope had celebrated the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper at Regina Coeli, which is less than a mile from the Vatican. But his continuing convalescence, after spending more than a month in the hospital, meant there was no Mass or foot washing ritual.

Pope Francis told the inmates, “Every year I like to do what Jesus did on Holy Thursday, washing feet, in a prison,” the Vatican said. “This year I cannot do it, but I can and want to be close to you. I pray for you and your families.”

The pope personally greeted each of the people in the rotonda, prayed the Lord’s Prayer with them and gave his blessing.

Vatican photos of the visit also show him in the prison yard waving at inmates looking out the barred windows of their cells and waving from the rotonda to inmates pressed together against an iron and glass door hoping to see him.

The Italian Ministry of Justice website said that as of April 16, there were 1,098 men detained in the jail awaiting trial or sentencing. The facility is designed to hold fewer than 700 prisoners.

As he left the prison, sitting in the front passenger seat of a small car, he stopped to speak to reporters and told them, “Every time I enter these doors, I ask myself, ‘Why them and not me?’”

He has explained on several occasions that all people are sinners, himself included, but grace, providence, family upbringing and other factors play a determining role.

Pope Francis, who was elected in 2013, has continued a Holy Thursday practice he began as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina: usually celebrating the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at a prison or detention facility and washing the feet of inmates.

In his first year as pope, he set aside the usual papal practice of washing the feet of 12 priests during a public celebration of the Holy Thursday Mass by going to a juvenile detention facility and washing the feet of Catholic and non-Catholic teens. He returned to the same jail in 2023 to wash the feet of young men and women.

In 2014, he washed the feet of people with severe physical handicaps at a rehabilitation center, and in 2016, he celebrated the liturgy and foot-washing ritual at a center for migrants and refugees.

On Holy Thursday in 2020, the COVID lockdown led the pope to celebrate the Mass at the Vatican with a small congregation and omit the optional foot-washing ritual.

Pope Francis also has celebrated the Mass at prisons outside Rome — in the towns of Paliano, Velletri and Civitavecchia.

After the pope’s “private” visit to Regina Coeli, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, celebrated the basilica’s parish Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

  • Taxi driver k!lls woman before sleeping with corpse and burying her

A motorcycle taxi driver k!lled and dismembered a young woman before burying some of her remains in the garden of a neighbouring home.

Esteban Chicche Sullo, 51, kidnapped 19-year-old Mercedes Sánchez Querevalú, who was missing for one week before being found de@d.

The 51-year-old has confessed to k!lling her, telling police that he “hit her with a stick twice on the head”.

Taxi driver k!lls woman before sleeping with corpse and burying her

The victims’ mother reported her daughter’s disappearance after she failed to return home.

Mercedes, a mum to a two-year-old girl, left her house on April 6, 2025, to meet with Chicche, who was known to the family. According to local press, Mercedes’s mum said that Chicche owed her daughter money which is why the pair had met.

After hitting her over the head and leaving her unconscious, Chicche took the young woman to his home. He told police that when they arrived, he slept with her before dismembering her into eight parts, as reported by NeedToKnow.

Chicche then buried her remains in the courtyard of his neighbour’s home after digging a one-metre deep hole. He was able to climb a neighbouring wall with a ladder and was undetected as the property is currently unoccupied.

According to police, he kept the body of the young woman inside his room for up to 24 hours as he wasn’t sure what to do with it.

He considered throwing her body in a bin but then decided to instead dismember her in his bathroom – in a process which would have taken around three hours.

Chicche disposed of Mercedes’ clothing and her cell phone and used bleach to clean his home.

On the morning on April 14, her buried remains were discovered.

Police are currently investigating the details but believe that Chicche s*xually abused Mercedes before k!lling her as she tried to escape.

Mercedes’ body was discovered in San Juan de Lurigancho, in Lima, Peru, after she left her home in Villa María del Triunfo, also in Lima.

  • BREAKING: ICPC Grills Enugu ECTDA Chairman Anya Over Alleged N417Million Fraud, Abuse Of Office

The Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), Rt. Hon. Eugene Uche Anya has been interrogated by operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations of financial fraud and other misconduct.

SaharaReporters gathered that this development is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged large-scale financial irregularities and abuse of office.

Anya, who was appointed as ECTDA Chairman in August 2023 by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, was detained by ICPC operatives on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. He was held between 10:49 a.m. and 5:37 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Sources close to the investigation disclosed that Mr. Emike Ikechukwu, the Head of the Project and Physical Development Control Unit at ECTDA, is also under scrutiny.

Anya appointed Mr. Ikechukwu to the position shortly after he assumed office, despite his not being a professional town planner and allegedly bypassing more senior staff members within the unit.

According to financial records currently being reviewed by the ICPC, over N417 million was allegedly transferred from ECTDA’s account into Mr. Ikechukwu’s personal bank account. Of that amount, more than N210 million was later funnelled into the bank account of Eugenics Real Estate Ltd — a company owned and managed by Anya.

Sources disclosed that an additional N270 million was transferred into Mr. Ikechukwu’s account from the ECTDA project account. He then allegedly transferred more than N160 million directly into Anya’s personal bank account with First Bank Plc.

The ECTDA has faced controversy, including a June 2024 incident in which Enugu-based businessman Ihekwoaba Livingston Uzoho alleged that Governor Mbah’s administration, through the agency, planned to demolish his residence at No. 6 Ozubulu Street, Independence Layout, Enugu, to reallocate the property to Senator David Umahi, the current Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State.

Uzoho, originally from Imo State, told journalists he had been living in the house with his family since purchasing it in 2007. He said the property had all necessary legal documentation, including a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) and a government-approved building plan. He also noted he had paid all required taxes without default since acquiring the home.

According to Uzoho, trouble began in November 2023 when Minister Umahi reportedly visited the area with his aides, taking pictures and videos of the property and neighbouring plots, including one allegedly owned by Prof. Obumneme Ekwueme, a brother of the late former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme. Uzoho alleged that shortly after the visit, some residents claimed Umahi distributed N200,000 and stated intentions to take over the land.

Just 24 hours later, Uzoho said ECTDA officials arrived and marked his house for demolition, giving him 24 hours to vacate the property.

Fearing that the government might proceed with the demolition without further notice, he filed a lawsuit at the Enugu State High Court.

  • Trump considering barring Americans from accessing AI models created by DeepSeek

Amid mounting concerns about China obtaining a technological edge in AI, the U.S. government is considering cracking down on Chinese AI company DeepSeek while also putting more pressure on home chipmaker Nvidia.

Trump’s administration is reportedly thinking about imposing fines to prevent DeepSeek from using American technology and maybe prohibiting Americans from using its services.

Sources close to Trump’s 2024 campaign claim that worries about data privacy, national security, and the possibility of foreign AI technologies influencing American society and the economy are the main reasons behind the proposed ban.

Trump has long expressed suspicion about Chinese tech companies participating in the U.S. market, previously targeting businesses like TikTok and Huawei throughout his presidency. Although no formal announcement has been made, talks are reportedly in their early stages.

According to additional sources, Silicon Valley has been obliged to provide frontier AI models at reduced prices because of DeepSeek’s competitive pricing, which has caused the startup’s popularity among American AI engineers to surge in recent months.

  • Black Male Students Face Exclusion in Education

Despite rising attention to college and workforce gaps, Black male students continue to be pushed out of K-12 schools. (Photo Credit: Connect Images / Getty Images)

    by Quintessa Williams

In March, when The New York Times reported that 1 in 5 young Black men between the ages of 20 and 24 are neither in school nor employed, longtime educator Dr. David E. Kirkland was not surprised. The same article noted that Black men make up just 19% of enrollment at Howard University — one of the nation’s most prestigious HBCUs.

However, in his view, the article focused on the wrong end of a young person’s educational journey.

Opting out of college and the workforce is a symptom of a much larger problem for young Black men, one that begins as early as preschool, long before college enters the educational picture. The lack of Black men in higher education stems from next to no institutional or emotional support for Black K-12 schoolboys, lingering systemic racism in public education, and very few Black male teachers as role models.

“Most Black boys go to school and learn to hate school,” says Kirkland, founder and CEO of the nonprofit forwardED, a former NYU professor, and one of the country’s leading scholars on educational equity. “They’re told from day one that they’re a problem — that they’re unintelligent. They’re made to feel like a threat before they’ve even been given a chance.”

In other words, Kirkland believes the phenomenon of missing Black college men is the endpoint of a long, predictable breakdown, triggered almost as soon as their education begins.

“We didn’t just lose them after high school,” he says. “We’ve been pushing them out since pre-K.”

    The Early Pushout

The data doesn’t lie. According to the Department of Education, Black boys make up around 18% of preschool enrollment in the U.S., but nearly 48% of all preschool suspensions. Kirkland says that’s where the pattern and the pushout begin.

“We have evidence of disciplinary action and special education placements beginning as early as 2 years old,” Kirkland says. “We treat Black boys like they’re problems before they even know how to write their names.”

This hyper-surveillance — combined with implicit bias, adultification, and racial anxiety from teachers, aides, and school administrators — creates a cycle of exclusion. Black male students are suspended and expelled at three to four times the rate of their white peers, often for subjective or vague offenses like “defiance” that don’t usually merit punishment in others.

Schools that punish Black boys early and often, Kirkland says, are not neutral spaces, but sites of harm. Many Black boys are improperly funneled into special education programs not to support their learning but to manage their presence. And the psychological and social impact of educational mismanagement — damaged self-esteem, increased self-doubt, and frustration — can be deadly.

“Ten years ago, the suicide rate for Black boys aged 10 to 14 had jumped 144%,” Kirkland notes. “We’re talking about emotional and psychological death long before they ever drop out.”

By the time they reach high school, many Black boys have endured years of suspension, exclusion, and invisibility. When college becomes an option, it’s often one they’ve been conditioned to believe isn’t meant for them.

“That’s why many of them are not in college,” Kirkland says. “They’ve already experienced school — and what they experienced didn’t honor their humanity.”

Black Teachers Fill Gaps. We Need More

Only 6% of public school K-12 teachers are Black, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Kirkland says while their presence is limited, they are mighty in what they do. “For me, it was Black women,” he adds. “They told me I mattered. They told me I belonged. They didn’t give up on me.”

Still, the representation gap is staggering. Only 1.7% of U.S. public school teachers are Black men, according to federal data. Kirkland agrees that a lack of cultural connection and mentorship contributes to the disengagement that drives so many young Black men out of school.

“When Black men do make it to college,” he says, “there’s pressure to go into high-paying fields. Teaching isn’t seen as sustainable. And for many of us, school was a place of trauma — and why would we want to return to that?”

Overall, Kirkland says it’s not just about getting more Black men into classrooms — it’s also about transforming those classrooms into places worth returning to. “We don’t just need more Black men in schools. “We need to reimagine schools that deserve Black boys in the first place.”

    A System That Deserves Them

When asked how he’d redesign education for Black boys, Kirkland flips the question: “What deserves them?”

He calls for an education system rooted in radical love, trust, and imagination — a system that teaches Black boys how to be world-builders, not just rule-followers.

“We need a culturally sustaining curriculum, restorative discipline, healing-informed care, and assessments that highlight what they can do,” he says. “A system that doesn’t just measure their deficits, but also reminds our boys that they’re not problems. They’re miracles.”

  • West Ham push ahead of Manchester United in race for highly coveted striker

Manchester United remain in desperate need of a proven striker as their goalscoring struggles continue to define another underwhelming season.

Rasmus Hojlund has endured a tough campaign, often left isolated and learning on the job as the club’s main attacking outlet.

With goals proving hard to come by, United are expected to prioritise a new striker in the summer.

Names like Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres have been dominating the conversation.

    Jonathan David is another target.

The 25-year-old would likely be seen as a good fit of their long-term rebuild, coming in on relatively low wages.

However, the Red Devils may be set to miss out on the Canadian striker.

West Ham edge closer in race to sign Jonathan David

According to Daily Mail’s report, West Ham have leaped ahead of United in the race for David.

The Lille striker has attracted interest from across Europe.

Multiple clubs said to be monitoring his situation ahead of a potential summer switch.

Chelsea have long been linked with the 25-year-old.

David’s contract at Lille expires this summer, meaning he will be available on a free transfer.

A factor making him one of the most attractive names on the market.

Since arriving at Lille in 2020, David has hit an impressive 107 goals in 227 appearances.

Despite the absence of European football at West Ham next season, the Hammers remain confident in their pursuit of the prolific forward.

Chelsea are expected to remain in the mix.

Although the ongoing recruitment reshuffle – including the exit of Kyle Macaulay to reunite with Graham Potter at West Ham, could tilt the advantage in the Hammers’ favour.

With the Hammers also eager to reduce the average age of their squad, David is viewed as a perfect fit for their long-term rebuild.

Thus, leaving Manchester United with serious competition in the months ahead.

  • NIH Funds Trans Professor’s App to Help People Sound Like Their Chosen Gender

Panicky media coverage of the Trump administration’s cuts to medical research grants warns it will threaten the nation’s place as a scientific leader and put millions of American lives at risk, but a recent award illustrates the need for the president’s plan to reassess some of the projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The agency annually doles out most of its $48 billion annual budget to more than 300,000 researchers at 2,500 universities, medical schools and other institutions in every state. Since Trump got reelected, NIH funding has decreased by around $3 billion compared to the same period last year and it has caused quite a ruckus among the mainstream media as well as grant recipients who unanimously claim it is a matter of life and death.

This example, like many others examined by Judicial Watch, contradicts that assertion. It involves NIH grants of over half a million dollars so a transgender professor at a public university could create smartphone or computer-based software to help transgender individuals sound like their chosen gender. The first batch of NIH cash, $213,878, was awarded in 2024 with three additional awards of $114,998, $100,000, and $116,149 in fiscal year 2025, which started in October. The official purpose of the four awards is “Improving the accessibility of transgender voice training with visual-acoustic biofeedback,” according to the NIH. The recipient is a transgender—a biological man who now identifies as a woman— engineering and computer science professor at the University of Cincinnati formerly known as D. Novak when he identified as male and now known as Vesna Novak. The goal is to help trans people speak in tone that matches their gender expression.

“Transgender and gender diverse people exhibit a significantly lower quality of life than the general public,” the NIH writes in its grant announcement. “One reason for this is voice dysphoria: distress because a person’s voice does not match their gender identity (e.g., trans women with deep voices).” Reducing the “voice-gender incongruence can improve quality of life but is difficult to achieve,” the agency claims, adding that it can be accomplished with surgery though it is expensive and invasive. Gender-affirming voice and communication training (GAVT) with a speech-language pathologist can be effective but it is time-consuming and costly. There is also a lack of qualified providers so the government decided to fund the project to create smartphone or computer-based software that delivers information about voice, suggests exercises, and provides feedback on exercise performance. The trans professor’s project is expected to develop novel software that combines two main indicators of voice femininity and masculinity, according to the NIH which claims it funds research that enhances health, lengthens life, and reduces illness and disability.

The software is available for free to provide transgender people with critical tools for GAVT and can be expanded with other key features, the NIH reveals. “In the long term, GAVT software may become an essential tool to reduce gender dysphoria in transgender and gender diverse individuals, thus improving quality of life for this marginalized population,” the agency’s grant document states. “Furthermore, advancements in this area may generalize to computer-aided therapy for communication disorders, increasing potential impact.” To justify the grant the college researchers claim that their project is relevant to public health because it will provide critical insight into how smartphone or computer-based software can be used to help transgender people train their voices. “Transgender people often wish to modify their voice to match their gender, but voice training administered by experts is expensive and often inaccessible,” they explain in the grant document. “Our project will thus create and evaluate the first transgender voice training software that combines real-time information about vocal pitch and resonance with structured exercises.”

It is not clear if the taxpayer dollars continued to flow under the 2025 allocation after the Trump administration’s NIH funding cuts, but the fact remains that hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars have already gone to the trans voice app. Last summer a Cincinnati newspaper reported on the new publicly-funded app developed at the local university to help trans people make voices more masculine or feminine. In the story Professor Novak reveals that, while trans men often notice a change in their voice after taking testosterone estrogen does nothing for trans women’s voices, which can be stressful and scary.
