Not exactly sure about the meaning and purpose of Holy Week — or what happens during it? This is the explainer you need. (Credit: Getty/Jacob Wackerhausen)
by Rev. Dorothy S. Boulware
Christian theology embraces Jesus’ death as a ransom that was paid to bring back to God the many who belong to him. Many perceive Jesus as a loving savior, but his acts of resistance are often missed.
So during Holy Week, the redeemed pause to reflect — as best they can — on the days leading to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice. His death brought resurrection, a new life offered to all who believe. But even though most folks have heard of Holy Week, there are also many who aren’t sure about its meaning and purpose.
What Is Holy Week?
Holy Week is the observance of the seven days of Jesus’ life leading up to Resurrection Sunday, or Easter. Older preachers would often say, “Without the crucifixion, you can’t fully appreciate the resurrection,” which makes sense because new life would be empty without entering into the death that demanded it.
The late Rev. Dr. Gardner C. Taylor (often called the “Dean of American Preaching”) said, “The cross speaks clearer than any words — of pain and love, of sorrow and redemption, of death that leads to life.”
Though the backdrop of a horrific scene, “the cross was not a symbol of defeat — it was a revolutionary act of divine love,” said Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. “On Good Friday, love took the weight of the world’s hate and turned it into hope.”
President and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, said, “The crucifixion was the empire’s verdict, but resurrection was God’s response. Good Friday says injustice will not have the last word.”
Holy Week and Jesus’ Spirit of Resistance
The starting place for Holy Week is Palm Sunday, when Jesus took his triumphal ride into Jerusalem — all while the people proclaimed him king with their hallelujahs, implored him for salvation with their hosannas, and a few days later, demanded his execution.
The ride itself also has a political face, and comes from a place of resistance
“Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was not a sweet Sunday School parade — it was a protest march, a counter-procession against imperial power,” said the father of Black Liberation Theology, Dr. James H. Cone. “He rode a donkey, not a warhorse, to show that the kingdom of God confronts the violence of the empire with humility and peace.”
Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, Episcopal priest and canon theologian at Washington National Cathedral, agreed with the resistance theme. “Jesus riding into Jerusalem was a disruption of the empire. It was a direct challenge to Roman power and a call to God’s justice in the face of oppression.”
Modern Church Resistance During Holy Week
Faith leaders around the country have found ways to enter into that same spirit of resistance. Three shining examples can be found in Chicago, Dallas, and Houston.
Chicago: In Chicago, Salem and Progressive Baptist church members, following Palm Sunday worship services, marched through surrounding neighborhoods to announce their alliance with the person and good news of Jesus, with the invitation to come onboard.
Dallas: Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, focuses its social justice ministry on food, economic, gender, civic engagement, environmental, and missional causes. The community is gathering on April 14 to strategize around protecting Medicaid and SNAP from expected cuts.
Houston: In Houston, Texas, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church is hosting Bullseye Black Market on Good Friday and Saturday for the people who committed to withholding their dollars from Target for the 40 days of Lent. They will have the opportunity to spend those dollars with Black-owned businesses in the Greater Houston area.
What Happens During Holy Week: Day by Day
The gospels detail Jesus’ journey during his last week on earth.
Monday: On Monday, Jesus is storied to have cleansed the temple, according to the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He chased the merchandisers away and declared the space to be a house of prayer, rather than the den of thieves they’d created.
Tuesday: On Tuesday, Jesus is found teaching, actually embroiled in debate as priests and elders questioned his authority to do so. More than a few parables ensued; among them the story of two sons (Matthew 21:28-32) and the wicked vinedressers (Matthew 21:33-46)
Wednesday: This is the day Judas contracted with the chief priests to identify Jesus so they could seize him and proceed with their plan to destroy him and his message. In an alternate spirit, it is also the day
Thursday: Traditional services begin on Maundy Thursday, the day Jesus ate his last meal on earth with a promise to feast with them anew in the heavenly kingdom. It is at this meal that he gives the mandate (hence Maundy) or commandment to prove their discipleship by loving each other. He declared that love to be the only way the world would know them to be authentic. And to demonstrate such a strange, earth-shattering love, he dons a towel around his hips and proceeds to wash their feet. The washing of feet in biblical days is an article all to itself.
Friday: The crucifixion on Good Friday is the climax when Jesus actually experiences the worst form of capital punishment available in those days. He is nailed to a cross and lifted between two likewise punished thieves for all the world to see.
Saturday: This day represents the vigil as disciples hid themselves, at the same time trying to find out what was happening. Would Jesus really return? Was it even possible considering what he’d endured on the cross? Would they be arrested for having been part of his team? Would they be accused of having hidden his body?
Sunday: Early Sunday morning, Jesus was raised from the dead by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, hence the name Resurrection Sunday. Resurrection Sunday, or Easter Sunday, is the reason Christians are Christians and the joy of the day is not fully realized without the suffering of the preceding days.
What Happens at Church During Holy Week?
Many churches spend the week in prayer or in revival services. More formal services are held on Thursday with worship, foot washing and communion to commemorate the last supper.
In more liturgical worship spaces, following Maundy Thursday services, the altars are stripped and all signs of joy are removed from the sanctuary to create the most austere setting for the next day.
Friday’s service is traditionally the preaching of the seven last words of Jesus from the cross by seven different preachers. The service is planned to last the entire three hours Jesus was on the cross and is sometimes followed with some sort of community meal or fish fry.
Saturday is considered a day of quiet in observation and meditation. Sanctuaries are also decorated on Saturday to prepare for the most brilliant setting for Resurrection Sunday. Everything is white and bright and inviting, especially for those who’ve experienced the stripped altars from the day before.
How Do People Observe Holy Week?
Individuals — whether members of a house of worship or not — can observe Holy Week in various ways that focus on Jesus’ journey:
Prayer, particularly prayer walks
Fasting
Reading sacred texts
Creating poetry, music, art, drama, or journal entries
Practicing spiritual disciplines like volunteering, donating, meditation, or silence
And there’s always room for random acts of kindness.
Manchester United are planning ahead for a major summer window under Ruben Amorim, with recruitment strategies aimed at strengthening the midfield and defence.
Their scouting department has been actively monitoring Serie A, with a specific eye on Champions League-bound clubs, as Amorim looks for quality signings that can perform at the highest level.
The Red Devils are expected to part ways with several senior players at the end of the season, freeing up space in the squad and wage budget for new arrivals.
With Champions League football still within reach, United’s management is pushing to reinforce the squad with players already accustomed to top-tier European competition.
And while United’s performances in the Europa League have drawn praise, the club’s long-term planning continues in the background, especially with a focus on dynamic midfielders who can adapt to Amorim’s system.
One player firmly on United’s radar is Ederson of Atalanta, as per Il Giorno.
The Brazilian has been a standout figure in Serie A this season, playing a key role in helping La Dea close in on a return to the Champions League.
Fresh off a vital victory against Bologna, Atalanta now hold a four-point cushion in fourth place and face a favourable run-in that could cement their European status.

But behind the scenes, the club is already preparing for a summer of major sales, particularly to English clubs.
John Murtough, the former Manchester United football director, has just taken up a role at Atalanta as their new Director of Global Development.
His Premier League connections, including his long-standing presence at Old Trafford, put United in a strong position to negotiate.
Atalanta know the English market well, having already sold Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo to United in big-money moves.
Ederson could be the next to follow, with the Red Devils reportedly making initial moves to secure him ahead of Manchester City, who have also expressed interest.
Ederson isn’t the only name on United’s radar from the Bergamo side, but he’s seen as a key piece in Amorim’s tactical evolution.
Atalanta’s openness to selling to the Premier League adds further optimism for a deal.
United fans will be watching closely as the Bergamo-England transfer axis continues to heat up this summer.

The Importance of IAEA Neutrality in Iran-US Nuclear Talks
Israel formulated strategies in May to target specific sites, to delay Iran’s capacity to advance its nuclear weapon development by at least a year. ~New York Times
21WIRE
A report dated April 16, 2025, from the New York Times indicates that U.S. President Donald Trump has halted a proposed Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear installations. This represents a notable shift from his earlier hardline stance, as he now prioritises diplomacy and supports renewed nuclear talks with Tehran. The decision followed extensive internal discussions and a private letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, urging negotiations and warning of potential military consequences.
According to the newspaper, Israel formulated strategies in May to target specific sites, to delay Iran’s capacity to advance its nuclear weapon development by at least a year. The New York Times reported that Israel requested the U.S. support, which the Hebrew state deems necessary not only to protect Israel from potential Iranian reprisals but also to guarantee the success of the offensive. Following extensive internal discussions, Trump opted to pursue diplomatic negotiations with Iran instead of endorsing Israel’s proposed military intervention. Meanwhile, ahead of Iran’s second round of indirect talks with the United States, which are expected to take place in Oman on Saturday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi engaged in discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during his two-day visit to Tehran, which comes at a time of heightened tensions regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
After the meeting, Araghchi wrote on X:
Had useful discussion with visiting IAEA chief Grossi. In the coming months, the Agency can play a crucial role in peaceful settlement of the Iranian nuclear file.
As variety of spoilers are gathered to derail current negotiations, we need a Director General of Peace.
Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, the leader of US Central Command, along with Mike Waltz, the US national security adviser, had expressed a willingness to consider the Israeli plans. However, Trump’s obstruction of the Israeli-suggested joint operation against Iran, aimed at advancing the nuclear agreement, which ultimately necessitates that the IAEA operates with integrity and refrain from political involvement…

Iran’s nuclear chief urges IAEA to maintain neutrality in Tehran-Washington talks
Tehran expects the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to remain neutral and professional in its approach to the indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, says [Mohammad Eslami] the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation.
Speaking at a joint press conference with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi in Tehran on Thursday, Mohammad Eslami said that the two sides share an understanding on avoiding language or actions that Iran’s foes could exploit.
Iran and the United States kick-started indirect talks on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and termination of anti-Iran sanctions in the Omani capital of Muscat on Saturday. The two sides described the talks as positive and agreed to hold the second round next Saturday.
During the press conference, Eslami said deputy-level meetings between the IAEA and Iran’s nuclear agency will be held in the coming days to discuss outstanding issues and the details of ongoing cooperation.
He stressed that the 2023 joint statement between Iran and the IAEA had led to “good progress,” and that the remaining issues would continue to be addressed within the same framework.

IAEA seeks to bridge Iran-US gap in nuclear talks
For his part, Grossi said the IAEA is in contact with both Iranian and US officials to help facilitate progress in their indirect negotiations.
The head of the UN nuclear watchdog said he is in touch with the American negotiator to explore how the IAEA can play a positive and constructive role. “We want to be a bridge between Iran and the United States and help reach a positive outcome,” he said.
Grossi described his meetings in Tehran, including talks with Eslami and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, as “deep and honest,” adding that the agency is committed to verifying any future agreement to ensure its credibility.
He noted the talks are at a critical stage, expressing optimism that a final deal is achievable if both sides show the necessary will.
Grossi also praised Iran’s peaceful nuclear achievements after visiting an exhibition on Iran’s nuclear achievements, but emphasised the IAEA’s responsibility to ensure non-proliferation. “It’s crucial that nuclear technology is used for peaceful purposes only,” he said, stressing that time is limited to reach a deal that resolves remaining concerns.
Grossi arrived in Tehran on Wednesday for his second visit under the current Iranian administration.

ST. MARYS, Ga. (TCN) — Two men will spend the rest of their lives behind bars for kidnapping, torturing, and killing a 29-year-old homeless man in a remote area known locally as “Gilligan’s Island.”
The Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office announced April 16 that a jury found 56-year-old Frank Kennedy and 29-year-old Anthony Mistretta guilty of malice murder, kidnapping, and other related felony charges in connection with the death of John Mamph. A judge subsequently sentenced Mistretta and Kennedy to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
According to prosecutors, on July 5, 2023, the defendants beat and hog-tied Mamph near his homeless encampment before bringing him to a boat ramp, placing him in a boat, and taking him out on a lake. The defendants reportedly weighed the victim down with numerous weights while he was still tied up, and then they threw him into the lake to drown.
The following day, an individual found Mamph’s body while Jet Skiing with his family and called law enforcement. St. Marys Police responded to the area and initially arrested five suspects, including Kennedy and Mistretta, as well as Debra Dougherty, Megan Robison, and Bernice McGuire.
Prosecutors said prior to the trial, Dougherty pleaded guilty to felony murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years served. McGuire pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and hasn’t yet been sentenced. Robison originally lied to authorities about her knowledge of the incident, and she pleaded guilty to making a false statement. Robison received a sentence of five years of probation.

The Department of Defense was sued on Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), multiple military students, and the family members of military students over various book bans and curriculum changes implemented amid President Donald Trump’s effort to remove diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from the federal government and America’s military institutions.
The lawsuit, which was filed in the district court for the Eastern District of Virginia on Tuesday, states, “The Department of Defense Education Activity (‘DoDEA’) is quarantining library books and whitewashing curricula in its civilian schools. Right now, DoDEA is scrubbing references to race and gender from its libraries and lessons with no regard to how canonical, award-winning, or age-appropriate the material might be.”
The plaintiffs in the lawsuit, including 12 students from six different families at military schools in Italy, Japan, Virginia, and Kentucky, argued that the recent removal of books and curriculum at the military schools is a violation of the students’ “First Amendment right to receive information.”
The lawsuit added, “Plaintiffs bring this First Amendment lawsuit to challenge the Department of Defense’s ongoing and unconstitutional removal of books from their school libraries and suppression of topics and educational materials in their curricula.”

According to the ACLU, the Defense Department’s school system, which includes 161 schools throughout the United States and in multiple other countries, has “systemically removed books, altered curricula, and canceled events that the government has accused of promoting ‘gender ideology’ or ‘divisive equity ideology.’”
The ACLU claimed that the Defense Department has banned textbooks that discuss LGBTQ+ information, Native American history, slavery, and the prevention of sexual harassment.
Emerson Sykes, an ACLU senior staff attorney, said, “These schools are some of the most diverse and high achieving in the nation, making it particularly insulting to strip their shelves of diverse books and erase women, LGBTQ people and people of color from the curriculum to serve a political goal.”
Sykes added, “Our clients deserve better, and the First Amendment demands it.”
According to Military Times, Tuesday’s lawsuit against the Trump administration’s Defense Department is pushing for the president’s executive orders to be revoked and for the banned books and curriculum to be reinstated in the department’s military schools.
Matt Callahan, an ACLU senior supervising attorney, claimed, “The government can’t scrub references to race and gender from public school libraries and classrooms just because the Trump administration doesn’t like certain viewpoints on those topics.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday paid tribute to Christians facing hardship, persecution or conflict around the world who cannot celebrate freely in an Easter message.
Starmer also called on the nation to “work together for the flourishing and renewal of Britain.
According to the 2024 World Watch list, an annual report published by Open Doors, around 365 million Christians are subject to high levels of persecution and discrimination, and in 2023 4,998 Christians were killed for faith-related reasons.
In his Easter statement Starmer said: “As Lent comes to an end and we move into the Easter weekend, I want to wish Christians everywhere remembering the death and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ a very happy Easter.
“The story of Easter is central to the Christian faith: It is a story of hope, redemption and renewal.
“This Easter, as churches hold special services across the UK, and gather to celebrate with friends and family, we remember those Christians facing hardship, persecution or conflict around the world who cannot celebrate freely.
“I also want to thank you for the ways in which you follow Christ’s example of love and compassion in serving your communities.
“Whether through night shelters, youth clubs, toddler groups, family support, care for the elderly or chaplaincy support, and in a multitude of other ways, you demonstrate steadfast commitment and care.
“We can all take inspiration from the message of Easter and continue to work together for the flourishing and renewal of our country.”

Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency he leads claim to have unearthed evidence to prove a longstanding conspiracy theory about Democrats orchestrating illegal voting by noncitizens on a scale large enough to swing national elections in their favor. But voting experts say the claims are highly dubious, and DOGE hasn’t released any evidence.
The allegation is pretty straightforward — but DOGE’s data may not be telling the whole story. Antonio Gracias, a private equity investor who is working with DOGE, said the DOGE team matched Social Security numbers given to noncitizens with work visas against voter registration rolls in four sample states, and found thousands of crossovers.
Gracias said “many” of those people actually voted. Moreover, he and Musk allege that it is all part of a Democratic plot to influence federal elections.
DOGE says it provided the data to federal prosecutors for criminal investigation, but nothing has been shared publicly.
Without DOGE’s data, we can’t determine how many cases of noncitizen votes may have been uncovered. But voting and data experts warn that when matching millions of numbers in databases, even a small percentage of errors can distort things. That’s not to say there aren’t any noncitizens who wrongly register to vote, and that there aren’t some who actually do vote. But states that have performed detailed audits of voting records have found such instances to be relatively rare.
In some cases, officials in those states have found hundreds of noncitizens on voter registration rolls, a fraction of whom also voted. But hardly enough to have come close to swinging a national election.
And, voting experts say, the conspiracy falls apart when you weigh the benefit of any single vote against the potential legal consequences faced by someone who votes illegally as a noncitizen — fines, jail time and deportation.
“The evidence is that the number of noncitizens illegally voting in federal elections is extremely low, not high enough to have changed the party outcome of any federal election in recent years,” Walter Olson, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute told us. “Audits and investigations in states like Ohio, Nevada, and North Carolina have found the numbers to be tiny in relation to votes cast. Analysis of voting statistics in parts of the country in areas with large noncitizen populations do not find results consistent with Musk’s claims, and do find results consistent with near-zero attempts by this population to participate in elections. States have many ways to cross-check databases and simply presenting a Social Security card or number will not make you a voter. The consistent experience has been that very few persons in this category mistakenly or deliberately vote.”
The DOGE Claims
In a town hall ahead of an April 1 Wisconsin state Supreme Court election, Musk and Gracias drew attention to a dramatic rise during the Biden presidency in the number of people provided Social Security numbers through the Enumeration Beyond Entry system, a program that provides Social Security numbers and cards to noncitizens who are granted work authorization by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The EBE program, begun in 2017 under the Trump administration, provided an expedited process for immigrants who obtained work permits to be assigned Social Security numbers (and thereby allow the federal government to track their earnings for taxation). That includes immigrants granted humanitarian parole or Temporary Protected Status due to civil unrest, violence or natural disasters in their home countries and immigrants who may have crossed the border illegally but who initiated an asylum application and were granted a work permit pending their asylum hearing.
As the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General explained in 2019, the EBE program allowed SSA to quickly offer Social Security numbers to these immigrants “because the information needed to assign the SSN” had already been “collected and verified by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency responsible for conferring lawful status and work authorization.” (The Trump administration recently suspended the EBE program.)
Here’s a version of the data Gracias posted on X:
* Data compiled by DOGE.
We reached out to the Social Security Administration to confirm those numbers, and did not get a response. But it’s not surprising they would have risen dramatically under Biden, who expanded protections for immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Ukraine and Venezuela. The number of immigrants seeking asylum in the U.S. also soared during the Biden years.
“When we saw these numbers, we were like, ‘What is this?’ In ’21 you see 270,000 people goes all the way to 2.1 million in ’24,” Gracias said at the town hall. “These are noncitizens that are getting Social Security numbers.”
“Yeah, this is a mind-blowing chart,” Musk said.
“This is worth just reiterating,” Musk said. “People sometimes think that under the Biden administration that he was simply asleep with the switch. They weren’t asleep with the switch. It was a massive large scale program to import as many illegals as possible, ultimately to change the entire voting map of the United States and disenfranchise the American people, and make it a permanent deep blue one-party state from which there would be no escape.”
Gracias claimed DOGE found that many of the more than 5 million who had gotten Social Security numbers through the EBE program since its inception in 2017 were also getting various government benefits, including more than 1 million receiving Medicaid. He said he went a step further and decided to match the EBE list against voter records, and discovered many of those people had registered to vote.
“And who did vote,” Musk added.
“And we found some by sampling that actually did vote,” Gracias concurred. “And we have referred them to prosecution at the Homeland Security Investigation service. Already. Already. That is already happening right now.” (We reached out to the Department of Homeland Security to confirm an investigation but did not get a response.)
Musk said that once a noncitizen has obtained a Social Security number “from there you get on the voter rolls and then the basically Dem operatives will farm the vote.”
In an interview on “Fox & Friends” on April 2, Gracias provided a bit more detail, saying that DOGE “found in a handful of cooperative states that they were thousands of them on the voter rolls and that many of them had voted.” He noted that the search it performed was made possible by an executive order signed by Trump allowing inter-agency data-sharing.
“It’s never been done before where agencies could talk to each other and databases could talk to each other,” Gracias said. “That allowed us to connect all this data to find these people across the system, across the benefits system, all the way to the voting records.”
Privacy activists told NPR that despite the executive order, the search may have violated privacy laws and a court order.
Gracias provided still more detail about the alleged illegal noncitizen voting in an interview on the All-In Podcast on April 4.
“I’m talking about four states,” Gracias said, though he did not name the four “friendly states” DOGE sampled. “We looked at the voter rolls, we found these people, thousands of them, on the voter rolls. And we found many of those people had voted. In one state in particular well over a thousand voted. Yeah, I think this was a move to import voters.”
Asked in an April 1 interview about those DOGE findings, Republican Rep. Byron Donalds said, “My reaction is the disgust that every American has because we knew that what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and the left were doing in the darkness of night was shoving illegal immigrants into every role possible, whether it be entitlements or voting rolls across the country. Now, we have the proof.”
The DOGE findings were also cited by Republican Rep. Aaron Bean in support of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or SAVE Act, a bill aimed at preventing voting by noncitizens. (Opponents of the legislation, including voting rights advocate groups, say it could prevent voter registration by U.S. citizens by instituting hurdles.)
On the floor of the House, Bean said: “We are here because this previous administration, the Biden administration, imported 10 to 15 million illegal aliens who have come here and we have evidence that they are participating in our elections. … It ends today when we vote on the SAVE Act.”
The bill passed the House on April 10 mostly along party lines, 220-208.
Experts Dubious
Voting experts, however, say the DOGE findings likely aren’t the smoking gun Musk and Gracias make it out to be.
Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Marymount University who served as senior policy adviser for democracy and voting rights in the Biden White House, said what Musk and Gracias cited “isn’t evidence, it’s garden-variety conspiracy theory, and a very old and overplayed one at that.”
“It is possible that a handful of noncitizens have been mistakenly registered to vote – and by a handful, I really mean tiny numbers,” Levitt said. “I don’t know what records DOGE is referring to when they say they ‘took a sample’ of noncitizen immigrants and looked at voter registration records to see if they had registered and voted, but every time I’ve seen claims like this with any specificity, the results vanish into smoke when people actually look at the results: either it’s bad data, or bad matching, or bad assumptions, or all three. But it’s impossible to really evaluate at this level of specificity, which they know full well.”
Indeed, states that have looked into noncitizens voting or registering to vote have found the issue to be relatively rare.
In March, the Iowa Secretary of State announced that an audit had found 277 noncitizens had registered to vote in the state. And 35 of those noncitizens cast ballots that were counted in the 2024 election; five such ballots were rejected.
In May 2024, the Ohio Secretary of State announced it had found 137 people on the state’s voter registration rolls who had twice confirmed their noncitizenship status to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The press release did not indicate how many, if any, had tried to actually vote. But a grand jury indicted six people who legally and permanently immigrated to the U.S. for voting illegally as noncitizens between 2008 and 2020.
In 2022, Georgia conducted a citizenship review of state voter rolls and found that 1,634 people had attempted to register to vote between 1997 and 2022 and could not be verified as citizens by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. None, however, voted. In October, the Associated Press reported that Georgia election officials said 20 out of the 8.2 million on the state’s voter registration rolls were not U.S. citizens, and that nine had voted in previous elections.
In 2021, the Nevada Republican Party filed a complaint alleging that as many as 3,987 noncitizens had voted in the 2020 election. The allegation was based on people who presented an immigration document while obtaining a driver’s license over the previous five years. But a 13-page report issued by the Nevada Secretary of State concluded the allegation failed to account for a large number of noncitizens who were naturalized — and therefore became legal voters — in the time between obtaining their driver’s license and the election. “Without specific evidence to establish that identified individuals were foreign nationals when they voted in the November 3 election, there is nothing further that can be investigated,” the report stated. “In summary, the generalized information acquired from DMV cannot serve as a basis for an investigation into alleged voter fraud.”
“Multiple credible sources have documented that there is no evidence that unauthorized immigrants, green-card holders, or immigrants on temporary visas have registered and voted in U.S. federal elections in significant numbers,” Ariel G. Ruiz Soto, a senior policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, told us via email. “Noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal in all states and, since 1996, has criminal penalties” that can include federal incarceration for even registering to vote, he said.
“There have been a small number of people who have wrongfully registered to vote, often by mistake, and far fewer actually casting ballots,” Ruiz Soto said, adding that “clearly more can be done to reduce the likelihood of immigrants erroneously registering to vote.” But, he said, “this is not a problem of millions of immigrants, and the scale is often blown out of proportion by critics. Musk’s and Gracias’ remarks oversimplify the process of migrants obtaining temporary status and work authorization, and they promote the inaccurate idea that most recent migrants would vote for the Democratic Party even if they were to lawfully become U.S. citizens in the future.”
A Brennan Center for Justice review found that of the 23.5 million votes cast in the 2016 general election in 42 jurisdictions in 12 states, there were “only an estimated 30 incidents of suspected noncitizen voting” that were referred for further investigation or prosecution. “The absence of fraud reinforces a wide consensus among scholars, journalists and election administrators: voter fraud of any kind, including noncitizen voting, is rare.”
The Bipartisan Policy Center analyzed a database of fraud cases compiled by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, and found “only 77 instances of noncitizens voting between 1999 and 2023,” the BPC said in a 2024 post on this issue. “Illegal voting, including by noncitizens, is routinely investigated and prosecuted by the appropriate authorities, and there is no evidence that noncitizen voting has ever been significant enough to impact an election’s outcome.”
Many states’ voter registration rolls do not even include Social Security numbers, and so matches in those cases — which would involve matching based on data such as names, addresses, birthdates or driver’s license numbers — can result in bad matches, experts said.
Experts: Risks Outweigh Rewards
The idea that large numbers of noncitizens are voting illegally is also highly dubious, experts told us, given the consequences faced by those immigrants for the payoff of a single vote.
Although it has long been illegal for noncitizens to vote, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 added some teeth to the prohibition against noncitizens registering to vote or voting in national elections. Violation can result in fines, up to a year in prison, deportation and revocation of legal status.
“Ockham’s razor says that noncitizens aren’t intentionally registering or voting, because it’s just not worth it,” Levitt told us, referring to the theory that the simplest explanation is usually the best. The conspiracy theory Musk and Gracias have “laid out for registering nets a noncitizen exactly one incremental vote. And in exchange, they’ve created a permanent paper record of a federal and state crime that’s an absolutely standard part of any record check for any change in immigration status, subjected themselves to deportation,” fines and potential prison time “and ensured that they’ll never get citizenship. The reason you don’t see actual evidence of noncitizen voting in any volume is that it doesn’t make any sense for any noncitizen to commit the crime.”
Olson, of the Cato Institute, said that while “Elon Musk has been spreading unverified and unverifiable claims about illegal voting by noncitizens for a year or more. … The actual political trends of recent years have been exactly the opposite of what Musk claims. As the share of foreign born persons resident in the U.S. has risen in recent years, the Republican share of the vote has risen, not fallen. Some of this is because new citizens who achieve naturalization have shifted in their voting propensity toward Republicans. But mostly it is because, by overwhelming majorities, those who lack citizenship neither attempt to vote nor succeed in voting.”

Easter falls on Sunday, April 20, but dinner may look a little different this year. Instead of elaborate tables with glazed ham, roasted lamb, carefully prepared sides and desserts that take hours to prepare, families today opt for simpler, more relaxed meals that emphasize convenience, connection and less stress. Welcome to a new era of Easter dining, where less really is more.
Convenience wins
A survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Kiddie Academy found that parents effectively have 17-18-hour days when accounting for employment, household chores and child-related tasks. As the average family juggles more demands than ever, the idea of cooking all day has started to feel overwhelming rather than joyful.
So, instead of sweating over multiple dishes, families seek shortcuts. Meal kits, pre-made dishes or even simple DIY meals are popular ways to ease the pressure. Retailers and meal kit companies now prominently feature Easter-friendly selections that promise to minimize kitchen time and maximize enjoyment.
Brunch is booming. DIY brunch bars – featuring easy-to-prepare foods like overnight French toast casseroles, customizable waffles and egg dishes – are more popular. And it’s not hard to see why: these casual, build-your-own meals offer something for everyone without trapping one person in the kitchen.
Another convenience that reshapes Easter meals is the rise of prepared gourmet grocery items. Stores now offer fully-cooked holiday dishes, artisanal baked goods and even restaurant-quality entrees to-go. Families find these options appealing because they provide a taste of luxury without the labor, allowing hosts to spend more time engaging with guests rather than juggling multiple cooking tasks.
Changing family dynamics
Another reason elaborate Easter dinners lose steam is the shift in family dynamics. Extended families often live far apart, meaning fewer big gatherings. As families get smaller, the practicality of cooking huge meals decreases, giving way to simpler, smaller-scale celebrations.
This shift towards smaller, more manageable meals means traditional heavy dishes like ham or lamb roasts – once staples – are replaced by lighter, more adaptable fare. Spring brings fresh vegetables like asparagus, peas, radishes and artichokes. Many families choose veggie-forward dishes such as roasted asparagus salads, simple pasta e piselli or artichoke dips, celebrating the season without complexity.
Bella Bucchiotti, new mom and food writer at xoxoBella, says, “Fancy Easter dinners are taking a backseat to what actually works for modern families – like a ham in the slow cooker and a store-bought dessert. With everyone’s schedules all over the place and families often living miles apart, convenience and flexibility have become the new tradition in my family.”
Additionally, there’s an increasing emphasis on dishes that accommodate diverse dietary needs. With more family members adopting vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free lifestyles, flexible menus that cater to these preferences without additional complexity are more attractive. Recipes like grain bowls, lentil salads or roasted vegetable medleys are now staples, easily adapted to satisfy various dietary restrictions.
Less stress, more connection
Perhaps most importantly, people have begun prioritizing connection over perfection. In a time when stress and burnout are common concerns, families actively look to reduce pressures associated with holidays. The pandemic accelerated this trend, as gatherings shrank and traditions relaxed. The result is a new approach to holiday eating – one that focuses less on what’s on the table and more on who’s around it.
As people redefine what makes a holiday meal special, classic dishes like deviled eggs, simple salads and freshly baked bread are seeing a revival. These foods are quick to prepare, widely beloved and easily shared – perfect for fostering conversation and connection.
“Growing up, our Easter dinner meant 25 people or more, with my grandmother cooking for days and all the traditional foods served in fancy china. Now it’s just my immediate family and parents, and we’ve simplified to just a few favorites. Even the ham goes into the Instant Pot – it’s quicker, easier and still delicious. The huge family feast is history, and we’re good with it,” says Michelle Price of Honest and Truly.
Potluck-style gatherings, charcuterie boards and grazing tables are especially popular because they allow guests to choose exactly what they want and encourage casual mingling. There’s a growing popularity of grazing Easter lunches, which feature cheese boards, dips, cured meats and finger foods. These let guests snack leisurely rather than sit down to a formal meal.
The popularity of interactive dining experiences is also growing. Families enjoy activities such as assembling pizzas together or creating their own taco bars. These shared culinary experiences foster laughter, bonding and storytelling, turning meals into memorable moments rather than just a means to an end.
The future of Easter dining
Looking ahead, these trends will likely continue to evolve. As families value quality time over kitchen time, retailers and restaurants alike will innovate with simpler, more convenient offerings tailored to busy lifestyles. Expect to see even more creativity with meal kits, prepared foods and smaller-scale dishes tailored specifically for holiday gatherings.
The decline of fancy Easter dinners doesn’t mean losing tradition – just redefining it. Families discover new ways to make holidays special without the stress, and create memories that center on connection rather than cooking prowess.
This Easter, maybe skip the roast lamb and try a casual brunch or grazing table instead. You might find it not only easier but also even more memorable – and isn’t that the true point of a holiday meal?

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe was even an idea in some executive’s head, there were Marvel movies bringing some of their most iconic characters to the big screen, albeit in a more divided fashion. Spider-Man, the X-Men and even the Fantastic Four got big blockbuster movies that helped put Marvel’s superhero characters on the map.
But before all of them, there was another Marvel character making bank at the box office. One who you might not even consider a superhero and whose film was not just grittier and darker than most comic book material, but even debuted in movie form with an R rating. I’m talking, of course, about Blade.
Eric Brooks — better known as Blade — is a Dhampir, which is to say a human and vampire hybrid, who basically has all the powers of vampires but without most of their weaknesses, meaning for example that he can walk through sunlight without being harmed, a feat that has earned him the nickname The Daywalker.
Despite being part-vampire himself, he is a hero in the Marvel Comics universe who predominately deals with hunting vampires and saving innocents from falling prey to these creatures of the night.
Even though he is largely free from vampire weaknesses, he does still need to consume human blood but he tends to use a special serum to offset his bloodlust rather than feast on humans like his foes would.
Because of the dark subject matter of vampires and horror themes, Blade comics can get pretty gritty and bloody, which puts him at an odd spot in the comics since the more mainstream heroes tend to be a bit more lighthearted or “PG-13” than Blade can be.
Blade is a very interesting character when it comes to Marvel Comics. Although Marvel has always had a wide variety of genres and approaches to their various characters, despite the vast majority of them sharing the same universe, Blade still sticks out massively as a character who is a lot more famous than his comic presence would have you believe.
Unlike previous characters I’ve covered in this article series like Daredevil’s over 700 issues or Fantastic Four who go even higher, Blade actually doesn’t even have 40 issues to his name.
Back in 1998 when his first movie released? There were only 10 issues that were actually focused on Blade specifically, so he was a very minor character even at the time.
Of course, like many other Marvel characters, Blade has had a presence in the comics besides his own run, whether it be as part of a team like the Midnight Sons or just having crossover appearances in other characters’ storylines, but it’s still impressive that New Line Cinema took a chance on such an obscure character… and even more impressive that it massively paid off.
The success of 1998’s Blade, starring Wesley Snipes in the title role, led to a full movie trilogy as the film was followed by Blade II in 2002 and Blade: Trinity in 2004 and we even saw Snipes return to the role last year in Deadpool & Wolverine which brought back several old characters from the pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe days.
Since Blade is so separated from the superhero side of the universe as well as has a fairly low publishing history compared to most other characters you’d see in movies, it’s not uncommon to hear someone go “Wait, Blade’s a Marvel character?” which actually makes him an even better fit for a crossover like Marvel vs. Capcom, where one of the fun things about the roster is to surprise fans by bringing out characters you may not expect.
Another character who is often mistaken as a non-Marvel character is the comedic Howard the Duck who we recently learned was actually being developed for the original Marvel vs. Capcom, but Marvel appeared to get cold feet out of worry that they’d get in trouble with Disney if fans mistook him for Donald Duck.
Of course, Blade has no such issues as he doesn’t directly resemble other famous characters to the degree that Howard the Duck might, certainly not any of Disney’s roster before they purchased Marvel, and while he never was mentioned as being on the table for the early Marvel vs. Capcom games, he actually was considered for Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
“There was just too much similarity with Dante…” — Ryota Niitsuma
Back in 2017, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 producer Ryota Niitsuma went on a tweeting spree on Twitter (now known as X) where he explained the reasoning for many characters that were originally considered for the game, with Blade being one of them.
Unfortunately, his comment on Blade is a bit anticlimactic — all he had to say about the fighter was that “There was just too much similarity with Dante…”
It makes sense at first glance — they both wear tenchcoats, they both wield big swords and they both use guns when they’re too far away to be slashing and even the gimmick of being half-vampire feels like it has some overlap with the Devil May Cry protagonists’ half-demon status.
Even so, surely there’s enough to draw on here to make them distinct from each other. Despite the trenchcoat, they’re not visually similar enough to confuse them since Dante is pale as a ghost and wears a bright red trenchcoat, while Blade himself is a Black man (British also, if you’re curious) wearing a pitch black trenchcoat.
Also, Dante’s moves are all about style and pizzazz while Blade would likely be a much more direct assassin or slayer, so even though I can kind of see Niitsuma’s point I really do feel like there’s more than enough room to differentiate between the two in their movesets even if their general archetype is similar, especially when they have such different personalities.
Blade hasn’t really popped up too much since his movie trilogy ended so while his relevance isn’t at the peak it once was, there could still be hope for him to appear in future Marvel fighting game projects if they were to happen.
There’s been a long-standing Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali which has unfortunately gotten stuck in development hell and if it ever makes it out of it, we’re likely to see a lot more discourse surrounding the character again.
Marvel Rivals, the latest popular game featuring Marvel’s superheroes, also had Blade show up in a stage cameo in the second half of its first season, though he still has yet to be added as a playable character.
He may be in something of a limbo in most areas right now, but if we do see a new Marvel vs. Capcom game there’s a good chance that whoever’s in charge of it will take another look at Blade and decide “we have to get this guy in”, even with Dante in the roster (because you know there’s no way he’s missing out on future installments).
As a character who’s mainstream media presence eclipses his comic presence, it’s a bit surprising that Blade has never gotten into a fighting game roster after so many Marvel games have been published.
But that also makes it feel like he’s got an even better shot at making it in for any future games since he already managed to kickstart Marvel’s movie success back in 1998 and most definitely has not been forgotten by fans.
