  • News: Passengers Complaing Over The Hike Of Fare In Lagos Airport

    By Dickson Blessing

A whole lot of intending passengers at the two local airports in Lagos had been stranded on Thursday over increased air fare.
The airline had capitalized on the festive period to hike the air fares. It was gathered that the a fare of an hour cut across 30,000 to 43,000 which was against the previous 18,000 fare.
The airlines officials reported that the rush for tickets were mainly for Enugu, Owerri, Calabar, Abuja, Porthacourt.
It was also discovered at the Lagos airports well as enquiries from airline representatives show that the average fare on the Lagos-Enugu route, which was less than 45 minutes, was N35, 000 as against N20, 000 about two months ago.
NAN disclosed that  Mr Yakubu Dati, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), had on Dec. 11 advised Nigerians to make use of passenger service portals. He said it would help them plan to avoid last minute stress.
Mr Olumide Faleti, a traveler who was heading to Enugu from Abuja said: “it is funny how things operate here. This is a time to share and not to exploit your passengers.’’
he more so advised that domestic airlines should learn to introduce low cost promotional fares to attract travelers instead of exploiting passengers as a result of the season.
He regretted the dearth of local carriers in the sector, adding that, the few in the business were cashing on the development at the detriment of their customers.
Another passenger, Dr Mayowa Olawale, disclosed bitterly that before now he had been searching for low cost fares online but could not get any.
“I’m on my way to Abuja where my parents reside. I searched on the Internet for promotional fares but was disappointed when I found out that all the carriers going my way had their ticket prices above N35, 000,” he said.
Meanwhile, some ticketing officers, who pleaded anonymity said that the difference in airfares when compared to what they used to be was normal at this period.
“It is normal for airfares to rise, especially during Christmas and as the year comes to an end. It is not only our airline that has increased fares,’’ he said.

  • Man United Target Is To Win The Title not Just To Qualify: Louis Van Gaal

Manchester United have not given up on winning the Premier League title this season, says manager Louis van Gaal.
Ahead of their home game against Newcastle United on Boxing Day, the Dutchman’s side are third, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.
Following a slow start, the Red Devils won six games in a row before their 1-1 draw at Aston Villa last week.
“Our goal is still to be the champion at the end of the season. It is always to be first,” Van Gaal said.
United’s 1-0 derby defeat by Manchester City at the start of November had left Van Gaal presiding over the club’s worst start to a season since 1986-87.
The 63-year-old former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager had insisted his side were in a rebuilding process that could take three years.
That was despite spending £150m on players in the summer – including a British transfer record fee of £59.7m on Angel Di Maria.
Di Maria has been among the injury-hit players on a lengthy treatment list that played a part in the Old Trafford side’s stuttering start.
But the recent run of form has put the club back in the title mix alongside neighbours Manchester City and leaders Chelsea.
United’s board had targeted a top-four finish and Champions League qualification at the start of the season, but Van Gaal said: “With my players and all the staff, we are trying to achieve more than they expect.”

  • Rodger Federer Stands To Be A Supportive Father Rather Than Pushy Father

Roger Federer’s drive to succeed has landed him seven Wimbledon singles titles and a legion of fans. But when it comes to his children taking up sport, he is determined not to be a pushy parent.
It was an unlikely meeting on the face of it – the Speaker of the House of Commons and the man who is considered by many as the greatest tennis player ever to grace the men’s game.
But when John Bercow, formerly Britain’s top-ranking junior tennis player, was given the chance to edit Radio 4’s Today programme and interview guests of his choosing, Roger Federer was top of his list.
Mr Bercow has watched the Swiss player in action no fewer than 65 times this year and was keen to get to the source of the unwavering ambition that has led him to remain at the pinnacle of his profession.
Roger Federer and John Bercow – a future doubles partnership?
“I realised very quickly that it’s an entirely different thing winning something for the first time and then having to come back the following year and defend it,” explains Federer.
“Once I reached a certain level… I looked up to the great other athletes out there [for motivation], like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Valentino Rossi and Michael Schumacher – people who did it so long, so many times and make you wonder ‘How did they do that?’.
“Next thing you know,” he adds, “it’s like you’re part of that in a small way, and every year that goes by you get closer to those people. They were definitely a big inspiration for me to keep working hard.”
Roger Federer joins Tiger Woods during a practice round at the CA Championship
This continued passion for the game has led Federer to a record 302 weeks as world number one, surpassing Pete Sampras’s mark of 286.
And after a difficult year in 2013, when he struggled with a back injury, Federer returned in impressive form this season to win more matches – 73 – than any other player on the men’s tour.
Once dismissed by many critics as a player in perpetual decline, the 33-year-old remains a serious contender for Grand Slam victory in 2015. Which is just as well, as he admits it would be difficult for him to turn up to a tournament as a sideshow to the main event.
“I definitely am fortunate to always be playing on Centre Court and very often prime time,” he says.
Playing on Centre Court at Wimbledon has become second nature to Federer
“I must say – and this is honest – I don’t know if I would still be playing if they would put me on Court 4 every day.
“That would be difficult for me, having played on all these wonderful courts around the world and now playing in front of a fraction of those people – that would be rough.”
The will to succeed is clearly a theme of his unrivalled longevity at the top of the game, and Mr Bercow – David Cameron’s former doubles partner in the Commons and Lords tennis team – is keen to know whether similar expectations will be pressed on his children.
“I don’t know if the kids are ever going to play tennis at a high level like that,” says Federer, whose wife Mirka gave birth to their second set of twins this May.
“Honestly, I think it all depends on how things are going to be when we settle in Switzerland, and what sport they are going to take up.
“But I think for any kid it’s important for them… to enjoy what they’re doing, whatever sport that is.”
Federer, however, is keen to make clear the distinction between supportive and pushy parents, especially given the role his father Robert and mother Lynette have played in his success.
Roger Federer’s father Robert is a regular fixture at his son’s matches
“Parental support and advice is very important…to make you understand that it’s a privilege to be able to go to tennis lessons and play tennis tournaments. So the least a kid can do is give it their best effort and best attitude,” he explains.
“At the same time, the parents also need to give space to the kid and the coaches so they can work and… travel by themselves – the parents don’t always need to babysit them through their entire career.
“That’s why today when my parents tell me ‘You know what, we want to come to every single tournament you play on the tour’, I would say ‘Yes please, come see me. I don’t mind spending every day with you guys for the year.’
“But if they tell me ‘We don’t want to come see you play because we really don’t enjoy it’ that’s cool too. And that’s what I hope every parent can look forward to with their kid,” he adds.
“It needs to be both ways and for me that worked very well – I got the space, but I also felt the pressure, the need to perform,” he adds.
  • Former Liverpool Star and England Defender Jamie Carragher Shows His Love For Manchester United Stars

Former Liverpool ace Jamie Carragher has shown little bias in his all-time Premier League XI
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has included five Manchester United stars in his all-time Premier League XI.
In what many would have predicted as a Liverpool-biased side, the only Merseysider to make the list is Liverpool skipper and good friend Steven Gerrard.
The former England international’s inclusion is a fairly straightforward decision – close to 500 Premier League appearances, numerous trophies, plus a worldwide recognition as one of the best players around.
Alongside Gerrard includes the usual big names such as Thierry Henry, Tony Adams, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Alan Shearer, but a surprisingly large selection of former Manchester United stars.
First and foremost being shot-stopper Peter Schmeichel, and then on to the right-back slot where Carragher names Neville ahead of current Manchester City ace Pablo Zabaleta.
‘The right-back unfortunately has to be Gary Neville! Top player and professional’, Carragher wrote in his Kicca blog. ‘Could be challenged by Zabaleta over the next few years, fingers crossed!!’.
In midfield, the former Liverpool player opted for Premier League legends Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs, the latter breaking numerous records and subsequently becoming a part of Louis van Gaal’s backroom staff.
Carragher’s final player, who also a successful stint with Manchester United, is Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo, now widely regarded as the world’s best player and favourite to win the upcoming Ballon d’Or trophy.
‘The best player in the world right now will play on the right side in this team Cristiano Ronaldo’, Carragher added.
Players such as Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard and Gianfranco Zola failed to make the team, though with only 11 to select from over 20 years of Premier League action, an all-time XI will always be debatable.
    Carragher’s all-time Premier League XI:
    Peter Schmeichel – Manchester United
Ashley Cole – Arsenal / Chelsea
    John Terry – Chelsea
    Tony Adams – Arsenal
    Gary Neville – Manchester United
    Ryan Giggs – Manchester United
    Steven Gerrard – Liverpool
    Roy Keane – Manchester United
    Cristiano Ronaldo – Manchester United
  • POLITICS: CR Resident Electoral Commissioner Barr. Mike Igini Transferred To Edo State

    By Efio-Ita Nyok

Information making the rounds in CRS suggest that INEC’s
Resident Electoral Commissioner to the state, Barr. Mike Igini has been
deployed far away from CR State to Edo state.
    Negroid Haven is yet to officially confirm this rumour;
however, the information has gone viral on social media especially Facebook.
This information is coming on the hills of the already heightened tension in
the body politic in the state as there are a lot of political maneuvers and
skimmig taking place. So many power centres in and out of the state are seeking
    political relevance.
Precisely, there are two main camps into which political
actors are perceived to have pitched their tent: the camp of the ruling PDP led
by the incumbent governor Senator Liyel Imoke and the class of the opposition
that may be said to be led by former governor, Mr. Donald Duke. If you remember
the incumbent senator representing southern senatorial district of CR at the
National Assembly, Prince Bassey Edet Otu had officially resigned from the PDP.
Though he is yet to officially defect to another party, our feelers suggest
that he is gunning for the Labour Party(LP). Similarly, Mr. Jeddy Agba is said
to be the concensus gubernatorial candidate on the platform of the LP; others
have followed suite. The implication is that the APC may not be a viable
opposition in the state in comparison to the LP such that if I say that the
2015 general election is between the PDP and LP I may not be wrong.
It is in the light of these realities that the alleged
transfer of the REC of the state Mr. Igini may be an aftermath of the power
tussle between these power centres in the state. An African proverb says that
when two elephants fights it is the ground that suffer. Mike Igini is compisite
of this proverbial ground. We should expect more of such trend.

  • Cross Riverians Celebrate A Bleak Christmas in 2014

    posted by Nyok Efio Ita

Christmas is a period in Christendom when the birth of Jesus
Christ is commemorated. 25 December is the day the Church hierarchy has
earmarked for the event. Though theologically speaking the actual day of the
birth of the most important figure in the Christian Faith is intellectually
uncertain, this day has come to stay.
The celebration of Christmas does not go without pump and
pageantry as Church services are held, choir renditions, cooking and eating of
exquisite cuisines and holidays are hallmarks of this period. Besides, though a
regious ceremony, politicians are now seen to identify with their constituents
by way of delivering Christmas broadcasts and declaring public holidays during
this period. For instance, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, the executive governor
of Akwa Ibom state is understood to have delivered a Christmas Message to the
citizens of Akwa Ibom State early this morning where among other things, he recounted
the achievements of the administration especially the world class stadium just
    recently completed and launched.
Cross River State seem to be unrivalled in her commemoration
of the birth of Jesus. Apart from boasting the most peaceful and cleanest state
capital in Nigeria, its genius in playing host to every Nigerian, African and
humans globally is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria. To crown it all was
the introduction of the biggest street party in Africa, namely the Carnival
Calabar. This milestone in the state is reputed to have fans world over such
that it has a Commission to manage it -Cross River Carnival Commission.
Before the 2014 edition, especially during the
administration of Mr. Donald Duke(1999 – 2007) the ‘party’, played host to the
entire country, continent and the world at large. However, one distinctive
feature about the party is that Cross Riverians including Civil Servants
partook actively in the event as the government came up with a policy of 30
days holiday beginning from the first day of December and the upfront payment
of salaries of civil servant in November that allowed for their being
financially bouyant to celebrate the festive period. But alas, the reverse is
    now the case.
At first, in the first tenure of the Liyel Imoke
administration(2007-2011) there was an attempt to scrap the Calabar Carnival, a
trend which met with stiff opposition and thus died a natural death. Albeit,
the 30 days holiday for civil servants and the upfront salary was scrapped by
the state government. It has continued unabated since then until now.
Nevertheless, in 2014 both the Christmas celebration for Christian faithfuls in
the state and the carnival is characterised by a gloomy atmosphere as civil
servants have not been paid their salaries, that is the November salary, let
alone the upfront December salaries. Considering the fact that CRS is a civil
service state which imply that the state is not industrialised it stand to
reason then that this year’s festive period will be underpinned by this
    financial reality.
To worsen the already heated polity is the near-truth status
of the proposition that during the just concluded PDP primaries in  the state, the sum of N900 million is said to
have exhanged hands between hierarchies in the state government and the party
hierarchy at the national level to determine unwholesomely the trend of the
primaries’ result to the favour of the governor allegedly.

This is the situation of things today in CRS.
