HEALTH: The Danger Of X-ray To The Human Body.
By Lizzy Adie
X-rays are electromagnetic radiation like light, but because of their greater energy, are able to penetrate materials but absorb or reflect visible light. It was discovered in 1895 and it has a widely used in medical, chiropractic diagnosis, dental, veterinary practice and industries.
When used for medical diagnosis, x-rays pass through the human body and are recorded on x-ray film or other imaging media. For example, during a computed tomography (CT) scan, the scanner construct images of the body from electronic detectors placed on the body and connect to a powerful computer, reproducing the image on a video screen.
X-rays images of the body are formed because the x-rays are absorbed to varying degrees by the different density tissues they encounter. Density tissues such as bone absorb more x-rays than the softer tissues of muscles and fat, which in turn absorbs more x-ray than air.
The x-ray absorb by the body during medical procedures releases energy to produce ionization. Ionization is the release of electrons from atoms and molecules which may then produce chemical and biological change.
The more x-rays absorb during an exposure, the greater the number of possible biological changes. X-rays photons carry enough energy to ionize atoms and disrupt molecule bonds. This makes it a type of ionizing radiation, and therefore harmful to living tissue. A very high radiation dose over a short amount of time causes radiation sickness, while lower doses can give an increased risk of radiation include cancer.
The risk of radiation is greater to unborn babies, and pregnant patients, so the benefits of the investigation (x-ray) should be balanced with the potential hazards to the unborn foetus.
It is advisable not to always go for x-ray as this turns a threat on the human body and reduces lifespan. -

Andros Townsend Struck In A Late Penalty To Give Tottenham The Lead
Tottenham fought hard to earn a late penalty that was converted and gave them the victory.
Game was delayed by 15 minutes as visitors stuck in traffic
Townsend scored a penalty after McEveley's handball
Second leg at Bramall Lane on Wednesday, 28 January
Winners face Liverpool or Chelsea at Wembley on 1 March
Andros Townsend's penalty ensured Tottenham will go into the second leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final with an advantage over Sheffield United.
Spurs had been frustrated by the League One side before Jay McEveley's needless handball in the 74th minute gave them a spot-kick, which Townsend converted.
Emmanuel Adebayor shot over, Townsend fired wide and Eric Dier also had a header saved for Premier League Spurs.Sheffield Utd a very good team – Pochettino
United created little and must win the second leg at Bramall Lane to advance.
Nigel Clough's side – seventh in the third tier of English football – had defeated West Ham and Southampton in earlier rounds of this season's competition but they never looked like beating Spurs.
However, the Blades had produced a resolute performance to restrict the hosts' opportunities and looked on course to head to the second leg at Bramall Lane on 28 January with a hard-earned goalless draw.
But their hopes were wrecked when defender McEveley, under pressure from substitute Roberto Soldado, raised his arms and handled in the area for a clear-cut penalty.
Tottenham have not won a trophy in the last six seasons and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be relieved with the victory, but annoyed by his side's lack of creativity.
Harry Kane, with 18 goals this season, failed to make an impact in front of watching England boss Roy Hodgson, although Kane was not the only Spurs player to be frustrated by a well-organised away defence.
Kane's strike partner Adebayor, captaining the side on his first start since 2 November, was also ineffective and wasted his only chance when he shot over the crossbar after he collected Christian Eriksen's ball over the defence.Clough credits Blades 'work' in defeat
Adebayor's replacement Soldado also did not test goalkeeper Mark Howard, but helped force McEveley into the crucial error.
For the Blades, whose coach was stuck in London traffic causing a 15-minute delay to the match, they will be pleased to still be in the tie.
They only had 35% possession but did manage to create two notable chances.
Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who scored twice in the Blades' 3-0 win against Premier League QPR in the FA Cup earlier this month, dragged his shot wide before Stefan Scougall also narrowly shot off target.
But McEveley's mistake and Townsend's calm finish from the spot mean a draw at Bramall Lane will be enough for Tottenham to face either Liverpool or Chelsea, who drew 1-1 in their first leg, in the Wembley final on 1 March.Sheffield United have only lost two of their 18 games in the FA Cup and League Cup under Nigel Clough
Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker began his career at Sheffield United and is a lifelong Blades supporter
Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor has only scored two goals in 14 games this season
Sheffield United also reached the semi-finals of the League Cup in 2003, where they lost to Liverpool
Jay McEveley's handball gave Tottenham the penalty, which Andros Townsend converted

TECHNOLOGY: Whatsapp Suspends Users For Using Un-official App.
By Eyo Ene-OkonWhatsApp is imposing 24-hour lock-outs on people trying to access its service via an unauthorised Android app.The Facebook-owned messaging service said that it had acted against users of WhatsApp Plus because of concerns that the program might cause private data to be leaked to third-parties.The unofficial app offers extra ways to customise how conversations appear.Experts say Android users should be cautious about where they download apps from.WhatsApp recently reported it had 700 million users sending an average of 30 billion messages a day. It currently charges a $0.99 (65p) annual fee to users who sign up to the service after their first 12 months of using it.According to one app store, WhatsApp Plus had itself been downloaded more than 35 million times since its 2012 releases by a Spanish developer, who called himself Rafalense.Security consultant Graham Cluley said that figure sounded “surprisingly high”, but acknowledged there was no independent way to verify it.WhatsApp Plus’ own website appears to be offline at this time.WhatsApp Plus users are being temporarily banned from the official serviceBut the moderator of a development community, which hadsupported it, used Google Plus to indicate that work on the software would now be put on hold.“We have received a cease and desist letter from WhatsApp and we are obligated to remove all download links and unfortunately delete this community,” he wrote.“[I] am really sorry for this but it’s out of our hands and WhatsApp has pushed us into a corner that we can’t escape this time. It was a fun ride but it has come to an end.“Deepest regards from Rafalense and me and all the WhatsApp Plus team for your support.”Twenty-four hour bans. WhatsApp Plus offers a way to use colours and background images in chat conversations that are unavailable in the official app.In addition, it allows users to increase the size limit on attached video and sound files and also letsthem prevent others being able to see when they last logged into the service – a feature it used to charge a “donation” to unlock. To access the features, smartphone owners must first uninstall the official WhatsApp app if it is already on official app’s site states their handsets.“The developers of WhatsApp Plus have no relationship to WhatsApp, and we do not support WhatsApp Plus,” a message on the, explaining its crackdown.“Please be aware that WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to third-parties without your knowledge or authorisation.”Subscribers are guided to download the official app from Google’s Play store. However, even if they do so, they are told they cannot access the service for further 24 hours because they violated its terms and conditions.‘Maintaining control’WhatsApp Plus was not available from Google Play – the Android developer’s own store – but was promoted on several smaller alternatives.“People should be careful about third-party stores,” commented Dr Joss Wright from the Oxford Internet Institute.“There are levels of quality control that are implemented by Google, which withdraws apps that are detected as being not completely Kosher, and indeed by Apple, which is incredibly restrictive about what it allows on the iOS store.“Such apps could bring with them security bugs.”But he added that Facebook also had other incentives to stop independent apps latching onto its WhatsApp platform.“That could potentially prevent it from adding services later for an added cost,” he said.“Or if it wants to add adverts later and ensure they are being served to the people who should be seeing them, then that it needs to maintain control and prevent the rules that it has set from being bypassed by third-party clients.”
