News: Gunmen Snatch Nigeria's Petroleum Minister Diezani Allison -Madueke's Brothe
Nigeria's Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke
Unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Thursday kidnapped Joseph Agama, the younger brother to Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, Police sources say.
Police Spokesman for Bayelsa Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the development on Thursday. He said that the command got a report shortly after the incident happened.
According to Butswat, the police received a distress call on Thursday from the victim’s father, Maxwell Agama.
Butswat said that the incident occurred at about 12.30 am on Thursday at Yenaka Community, a coastal settlement in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.
Community sources said that the armed gunmen off with the victim to an unknown destination after abandoning their original boat.
Family sources said that the kidnappers were yet to establish contact or demand ransom.
It will be recalled that a sister to the minister, Osiyo Agama, was kidnapped in October 2014 in Port Harcourt and later rescued by a combined team of Joint Task Force and Department of State Security Services.
Diezani who is known as a powerful minister in President Goodluck Jonathan cabinet and widely believed to be the most corrupt could afford to pay ransom requested by kidnappers who have now made a habit of abducting members of her family.
Recently her donation of N70 million to the Bayelsa chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently causing crisis in the party that crisis led to the suspension of Col. Sam Inokoba as state chairman of the party.
Diezani is also at the centre of controversial award of pipeline surveillance contracts to militiamen and ethnic warlords across Nigeria.
Last week ex-militants shortchanged in the process staged a protest led to the deaths of an ex-militant in the hands of anti-riot policemen in Yenagoa. In Lagos, a group led by Yoruba militia leader, Gani Adams -
NEWS: Boko Haram-ISIS Link, Authentic – Former US Envoy
As Nigeria and the United States continue to trade wars over the authenticity of the recent link between Boko Haram and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. John Campbell, has said that the link and allegiance between both terrorist groups appear to be authentic.
Reacting to the ongoing controversies over the link, in his new book which was circulated by the United States Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) yesterday, Mr. Campbell said there was an atom of truth in the recording that Boko Haram released where its leader Abubakar Shekau had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) emir, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
“The recording appears to be authentic. Shekau’s pledge goes further than his previous statements of support for ISIS, and was a Boko Haram propaganda coup: once again, the movement made the front page of the New York Times and became a brief media sensation. However, it is unclear what, if any, practical effects this pledge will have” he said.
He pressed further that some commentators see the new relationship between Boko Haram and ISIS as another example of the latter’s efforts to establish a network of franchises beyond its heartland, stressing that a closer association with ISIS might also be a boost to Boko Haram prestige, especially outside of Nigeria.
“The initiative appears to have come from Shekau, and as yet there has been no response from ISIS. Though North African suitors have been turned down in the past, that is unlikely in the case of Boko Haram, given its size. It may be a few days or weeks, however, before there is a public ISIS response” he added.
Commenting on the speculation that Shekau is seeking money, weapons, and even foreign fighters by a closer alignment with ISIS, the former United States envoy noted that there was little evidence that ISIS arms, money, and fighters would be forthcoming. “But, that might change in the future” he added.
Campbell also hinted that it may be unlikely that Boko Haram would attract European or American foreign fighters, adding that most of the foreign fighters that have joined ISIS appear to be of Middle Eastern or North African origin. He also said that the ISIS connection might encourage volunteers from nearby states to join Boko Haram.
Speaking further, the Senior Fellow of the CFR noted that Boko Haram’s leadership and structure appears much more diffused than that of ISIS, stressing that in many ways, Boko Haram resembles a popular uprising that uses Islamic vocabulary and imagery to justify its actions and motivate followers, while ISIS is clearly a centralized terrorist organization with millenarian goals. “Given Boko Haram’s structure, it is unclear how many members of the movement will honor Shekau’s pledge of allegiance to ISIS” he added.
He however said that, the Shekau pledge is a sign that Boko Haram, or at least parts of it, is moving away from it its traditional focus on the destruction of the Nigerian state and acquiring a more international character, a development potentially damaging to American interests.

SPORTS: Rakitic: Even Man City enjoyed watching Messi play!
Ivan Rakitic has joked that even Manchester City's players enjoyed watching Barcelona's Lionel Messi tear them apart on Wednesday.
The Argentine was the star of the show as Rakitic scored the only goal of the game to seal a 1-0 win on the night and a 4-1 victory on aggregate over the two legs.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen saved a Sergio Aguero's penalty in the second half, but City had the superb Joe Hart to thank for ensuring they only lost by a single goal and for keeping Messi at bay.
“He's amazing, incredible… Words no longer qualify with Messi,” the Croatia international told Canal Plus. “Nobody knows what to say about him any more.
“I think even Manchester City's players enjoyed watching Messi play tonight. Hopefully his form will continue like this.”
Rakitic was full of praise for England No.1 Hart and said the manner of their victory was all the more impressive considering it was against quality opposition.
“Congratulations to Manchester City's goalkeeper, he's a great shot-stopper and today he showed that,” the former Sevilla star added.
“Overall I think we did a good job – we enjoyed more possession and it's important that we won. City have a lot of good players and they're very dangerous up front, but we deserved the victory.
“We put in a great performance in a big game, but now we have another massive one to prepare for on Sunday against Real Madrid.”
Barca have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the eighth consecutive campaign but will be hoping to do better than their elimination at the hands of Atletico in the last eight in 2013-14.
Next up for Luis Enrique's men is a home clash against Real Madrid in La Liga – where a win will extend their lead at the top of La Liga to four points.

POLITICS: Buhari Not Really A 'Converted Democrat'.
By Efio-Ita Nyok| 18 March 2015| 9:00 am
The presidential candidate of Nigeria's foremost political opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major General Mohammadu Buhari (Rtd), while briefing the press in Abuja, the federal capital yesterday 17 March, declared that he would not engage President Goodluck Jonathan in a political debate in view of the forthcoming general elections on the premise that the activities of both himself and Jonathan are in public domain.
When I got wind of this development I was not as surprised that Buhari was avoiding a debate with his arch opponent for the umpteenth time as the reasons he advanced for that elusive inclination. I don't understand what Buhari means by that realities about himself and GEJ are in public domain. What does/could he mean?
Is this not the same Buhari that addressed the international foreign policy community in Chatham House and fielded questions from the audience? Is the International Institute of Foreign Policy not aware of his dictatorial genius of the past? Why did he have to go and assure them of his alleged conversion from autocracy to democracy? The mere fact that he had subjected himself to the democratic tradition for the fourth time on end was enough to assure his international audience that he was now a 'converted democrat'. They, as we, were not blind, so why the debate?
Why is Buhari changing the reason for his elusive mien from the accusation that the press is biased to purported immanence of his and GEJ's 'political data' in public domain? Is this the type of change we shall be experiencing should he win? Jumping from pillar to post all in the unwholesome bid to avoid responsibility? This may not be the change Nigerians are looking forward to.
To my mind, Buhari and his APC cohorts have better but covert reasons for not wanting to address the Nigerian electorates by virtue of a debate. These reasons could be these:
* Buhari is afraid of Jonathan's democratic credentials in respect to his.* Buhari is not a democrat as alleged.
* Buhari may not be able to rationalise his dictatorship of yester years to the Nigerian public as he did in Chatham House.
* Buhari is not honest as purported.
* Buhari does not have a sound policy framework of his anticipated presidency.
My disappointment with the electioneering campaigns in this year's general elections has been that, this campaign has not been founded on ideology/issues. The PDP and APC including their candidates at all levels -gubernatorial, senatorial, representative, and presidential, have not been able to expressly tell us what they want to use public office for and how they intend to actualise their visions!? The most the APC has said is that they wish to deal with corruption, security and arrest a dwindling economy. The corollary is HOW!? HOW!? And HOW!? You have not told us how!
The business of governance is complex but scientific. Buhari should be able to tell us how he intends to pay social benefits when the bench mark for crude oil is becoming as dynamic as possible.
The mere fact that Buhari cannot engage President Goodluck Jonathan in a debate where he would marshal out a scientific roadmap for addressing corruption, security and a comatose economy suggest that he is not a democrat, for democracy is government by, for and of the Nigerian electorates electing you based on sound Democratic credentials of politicians vying for public office.
