  • NEWS :Is SHEHU SHAGARI really Dead? By Nelson Amaobi Osuala. 8:42am,24-03-2015.

Premised upon the internet publicity of sunday march 22nd 2015 that alleged the unholy demise of the former president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari which did spread like a wild fire as there was reactions and counter reactions from different individuals across the country.

According to reports filed in by Daily Tribune, the personal assistant of the Alhaji Shehu Shagari foundation, Dr Atiku Nuhu Koko, did describe the News of his Boss’ alleged demise as unfounded and hence a grape vine.

We are a little bit surprised about how some jobless individuals could attempt to couch such sad cock and bull story about someone of such calibre. We cannot stop asking : ” shey people no dey fear again?”.

Some times ago, the same internet was abuzz with reports of the death of the incumbent Governor of cross river state, Sen. Liyel Imoke and other prominent personalities like the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandella, prior to the time he actually decided to join his ancestors.

During the period when the rumor of the death of his excellency Sen Liyel Imoke, the Governor himself told News men that It was shocked and taken aback when he heard and read about News of his own death.

However, we could say that the likes of the former president of South Africa was not so lucky like Gov. Liyel as few weeks after this rumor he got tired and decided to sojourn to the land of his ancestors.

Without much ado, coming back to our subject of our discussion, we are asserting in consonance with what Dr. Atiku Nuhu Koko reported that: SHAGARI IS ALIVE!
It would be recalled that Shagari celebrated his birthday on feburary 25th, with all the former heads of state in sokoto barely a month ago.

for those who care to know, Alhaji Shehu Shagari ruled this country between 1979-1983, with Alex Ekwueme as his vice president. He was known to have recorded gaint strides in Housing, industries, transportation and agriculture as the major goal of his administration, particularly in those early years of a boom in oil exploration and production.

His regime completed among other things the delta steel complex in 1982, and spent hundred of millions of dollars on the Ajaokuta steel complex.. I believe that a good student of history is no stranger to that name, that is of cause if such student read his or her post primary school history books of geography.

Shagari’s administration was however plagued with allegations of corruption including that of electoral fraud in the 1983 elections. His Government was later overthrown by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in a millitary coup on december 31, 1983.
Isn’t It funny that in an eve to the new year when everybody was supposedly celebrating and expecting the dawn of a promising new year, that was the exact night a siting democratically elected government was overthrown.

This is to my mind typical to what happened in the bible when the thrown of David was overthrown by his own son, Absalom.
Shagari never forgave the General for ousting him out of power. He blames Buhari for criplling his administration under the guise of fighting corruption. Till date, Shagari has never publicly supported Buhari’s presidential aspirations.

In conclusion, one wonders if It is not the case that It was the exact political enemies of the former president Shagari that must have instigated this rumour of his death! It is only in Nigeria that such evils can be conceived and her perpetrators go scout free.
To remind my readers.. Until today, we are still asking the question : who killed Okadigbo?”
Is it not disheartening that in today’s Nigerian politics, people do anything to clinge to power even If It might require that they wipe away their whole family..? What a misnomer.. What a pity!

  • NEWS: Obama to Nigerians: Keep Nigeria one

    By William Oyo-Ita 24/3/2015 8:33am

AHEAD Saturday’s presidential election holding throughout the country, the United States president, Barack Obama, has called on Nigerians to ensure they keep the country as an entity.

In a message to the country, made available by the Public Affairs Section, United States Consulate General, Lagos, the US president said “Nigeria is indeed a great nation and Nigerians could be proud of the progress in the country.

“Hello. Today, I want to speak directly to you — the people of Nigeria.

“Nigeria is a great nation and you can be proud of the progress you’ve made. Together, you won your independence, emerged from military rule and strengthened democratic institutions.

“You’ve strived to overcome division and to turn Nigeria’s diversity into a source of strength. You’ve worked hard to improve the lives of your families and to build the largest economy in Africa.

“Now you have a historic opportunity to help write the next chapter of Nigeria’s progress — by voting in the upcoming elections. For elections to be credible, they must be free, fair and peaceful. All Nigerians must be able to cast their votes without intimidation or fear.

“So I call on all leaders and candidates to make it clear to their supporters that violence has no place in democratic elections — and that they will not incite, support or engage in any kind of violence—before, during, or after the votes are counted.

“I call on all Nigerians to peacefully express your views and to reject the voices of those who call for violence. And when elections are free and fair, it is the responsibility of all citizens to help keep the peace, no matter who wins.

“Successful elections and democratic progress will help Nigeria meet the urgent challenges you face today.

“Boko Haram — a brutal terrorist group that kills innocent men, women and children — must be stopped. Hundreds of kidnapped children deserve to be returned to their families. Nigerians who have been forced to flee deserve to return to their homes.

“Boko Haram wants to destroy Nigeria and all that you have worked to build. By casting your ballot, you can help secure your nation’s progress.

“I’m told that there is a saying in your country: ‘to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done.’  Today, I urge all Nigerians—from all religions, all ethnic groups, and all regions—to come together and keep Nigeria one.

“And in this task of advancing the security, prosperity, and human rights of all Nigerians, you will continue to have a friend and partner in the United States of America,” Obama said in the message.

  • POLITICS: Abraham Lincoln's 1863 Prophecy Concerning Nigeria – Revealed!

    By Efio-Ita Nyok| 24 March 2015| 5:48 am

Prophets are such people who have the rear ability to call to walk into the yet-to-be-manifested future in the present. They can as well project into the already-manifested-past in the present. My conception of 'prophet' here is all encompassing, and not restricted to religion.

Human society, Nigeria inclusive, could be said to have three basic dimensions, and they are: culture, politics and economy; Such that writers are wont to always use the phrase -'socioeconomic, sociopolitical, and sociocultural.' I call them the three dimensions (3D) of society.

When prophets prophecy, they do so in respect of these 3D of society. And when Abraham Lincoln, America's 16th president foremost statesman did that, he did it in view of Nigeria's sociopolitical stratum. When, where and what did he really say concerning Nigeria?

In 19 November 1863 in Gettysburg precisely, during the dedication of a plot of land as a cemetery for burying America's fallen heroes, this is what this globocentric sociopolitical prophet  had to say:

'…and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth'.

For Lincoln, government was all about the people. The masses determine the legitimacy of any government. The masses are the yardstick of any government. He was right!

Nigeria has gone through four republics: First Republic (1963-67), Second Republic (1979-83), Third Republic (1993), and Fourth Republic (1999- present). The present republic is my preoccupation. The fourth republic is about sixteen years young. We have had three presidents, namely, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Musa Yar' Adua, and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. We have also had four general elections in 1999, 2004, 2007, 2011; and are about to have the fifth in 2015 come 28 March & 11 April 2015. In the former, the freedom, fairness and credibility of the general elections have come under profound doubt so much so that late President Yar' Adua was compelled to admit that the election that brought him to power was blatantly rigged! The government was not of, for and by the Nigerian people. In other words, Lincoln's prophecy failed in these.

However, Lincoln's prophecy seem to be fulfilling itself in the 2015 general elections. Never in the sociopolitical history of Nigeria has the ruling political party been so routed by the opposition as this year's election. This is owing to the fact that the government is to be determined by the people. Professor Attahiru Jega should be commended for introducing the Card Reader and Private Voting Cards(PVCs) in this years election. The chances of rigging and rigging with impunity are very slim.

In previous years, because electoral malpractices were the order of the day, campaigns were not so much as intense. Then thuggery was the in thing. But today, the votes of the ordinary man/woman in the street would count at least for the first time.

The Nigerian people are about to determine the government. Politicians are going hysterical in their politicking. Propaganda and counter propaganda rents the air. Legal tenders of varied denominations exchange hands. Many other shady dealings have so characterised this year's election. Be that as it may, I wish to charge the Nigerian electorates to be poised to determine the government. They should not be intimidated neither should they be hoodwinked into taking an erroneous decision. They should remember that with the PVCs in their hands, they have the more power. The politician canvassing for his or her votes does in view of the fact you are the sole determinant of his or her fate. The Nigerian electorate should understand that they are the boss: Jonathan, Buhari, Tinubu, Amaechi, Akpabio, Obasanjo, IBB, etc, they don't pull the shot again at least until after the elections.

I reiterate that, 'that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish' from Nigeria!
