  • POLITICS: NACRISS WW President, Comrade Uke Marshal, Assures Of Peace In The Forthcoming 28 March & 11 April General Elections

    By Efio-Ita Nyok| 26 March 2015| 6:31 am

In an Interactive Session With Tertiary Students/Stakeholders Across The State, organised by the Commissioner of Police, namely, CP Henry A. Fadairo of the Nigerian Police Force(NPF), Cross River State Command on Wednesday 25 March 2015, the President of National Association of Cross River State (NACRISS) Worldwide, Comrade Uke Marshal assured the police boss of a violence free elections in the state come 28 March and 11 April.

In his words directly addressing the commissioner he said, 'There will be peace 100%, but don't fail us'.

He reminded the police boss, a cross section of royal fathers, religious leaders from both Christian and Muslim extractions and the entire audience of student leaders that, 'students are rational'.

The fore most student leader emphasised the fact that student unionism has always been a force, drawing attention to the activities of such student unionist movement as the West African Students Union (WASU), etc and therefore ascertained before the entire audience that,
'We will never disappoint the Commissioner of Police(CP), but they should not disappoint us…They are pushing students to the wall.'

This meeting between students Union leaders and security operatives in the state came on the hills of the forthcoming general elections in the country. CP Henry A. Fadairo informed the audience that this meeting was necessitated by the fact that they had received intelligence telling them that some politicians are poised to use some students to disrupt the peace in the forthcoming elections. In his words,
'I will want a violence free election'. Again he said, 'We know whom we are dealing with, the students are our friends'.

The commissioner went on to state that the CR command of the Nigerian Police Force would not want to get into a fuse with students of CR state seeing that in some instances they have become in his words, 'comrades-police'.

On his part, the Emeritus Bishop of Calabar Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church and Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state, Archbishop Joseph Edra Ugbo, charged the students to tread the path of peace asking them to consider themselves first and their wellbeing before any other, especially politicians. In his words, he said,
'In this I will allow you selfishness, elections are not a do or die affair'. Sequel to speaking for about 10 minutes, the eminent religious leader concluded by saying that:
'Elections does not mean war, it does not mean absence of peace; it means peaceful elections'.

The Chief Imam of the Bogobiri Mosques and leader of the Muslim community in the state charged the students thus:
'There is no right to involve yourselves in electoral violence. Any politician who doesn't bring his/her eldest son/daughter to lead the violence group, then he doesn't mean well'.

Other speakers spoke on related subjects still charging students to eschew violence. They include the Ntufam of Calabar Municipality, Dean of Students Affairs of the University of Calabar, Presidents of Students Union of both University of Calabar(UNICAL) & Cross River University of Science and Technology (CRUTECH), the Chair of National Association of Nigerian Students-Joint Campus Commission(NANS JCC), etc.

The President of CRUTECH Students Union Government particularly asked the Commissioner to use his good offices to prevail on the Governor, His Excellency Senator Liyel  Imoke, to expedite actions and end the on going industrial action by the CRUTECH chapter of Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU). He also assured the police boss that CRUTECH students will not be used as elements to ferment tension in the body-politic in the state in the forthcoming general elections, but adding that they were tired if staying at home.

The interactive session came to an end at 12:19 pm with a closing prayer from an Imam.

  • ENTERTAINMENT: Jay z and Bey Arguing In the Public

    By William Oyo-Ita 25 March 2015 8:15pm
Story according to urban website – Crazy Days and Nights.

For the first time I can remember, the two lost their cool in public where at least four other diners and a couple of waiters in a private room witnessed them having a blowout fight. Granted this intel only comes from two people who were in the room but once tabloids and wallets start digging perhaps they can get the waiters to spill.

The two were at dinner and had just had appetizers brought to the table.
A bodyguard was in one corner of the room seated at a table looking around but mostly looking at his phone. Beyonce started speaking louder and louder and Jay tried to get her to be quiet while looking around. The bodyguard started watching the scene and stopped looking at his phone but did not get up.

Things settled down when Jay whispered in Bayonce’s ear. About ten minutes later Beyonce said something else and whatever Jay said didn’t seem to work. He shrugged his shoulders and Beyonce started pointing at him and leaned over the table and got closer to his face and started talking louder.

He then said one last thing, pushed back her chair and threw her napkin on the table before getting up and headed towards the door. She motioned for the bodyguard to follow her and walked out the door to the room to the main part of the restaurant. By the time she got to the door, Jay had thrown literally a stack of money on the table and was chasing after her.

  • HEALTH : Six Ways To Control High Blood Pressure Without Medication.

    By Lizzy Adie.

High blood pressure is a rather unique condition because unlike most health issues, it usually has no identifying symptoms, for this reason, blood pressure is commonly referred to as “silent killer”.  Life style plays an important role in treating high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication.
Here are six steps you can take to lower your blood pressure and keep it down.
    1.  Eat a Healthy Diet : Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14mm Hg. This eating plan is known as a Dietary Approaches to stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.
    2.  Exercise Regularly : Regular physical activity at least 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of Mercury (mm Hg). And it doesn’t take long to see a difference. If you haven’t been active, increasing your exercise level can lower your blood pressure within just a few weeks. If you have prehypertention – systolic pressure between 120 and 139 or diastolic pressure between 80 and 89,exercise can help you avoid full blown hypertension. If you already have hypertension, regular physical activity can bring your blood pressure down to safer levels. Talk to your doctor about developing an exercise program. Even moderate activity for 10 minutes at a time, such as walking and strength training can help.
    3.   Reduce Sodium in Your Diet :Even a small reduction of sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8mm Hg. One level teaspoon of salt has 2,300mg of sodium. Use herbs or spices, rather than salt, to add more flavor to your foods.
    4.  Limit The Amount Of Alcohol You Drink : Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small quantity, it can potentially lower your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. But, that protective effect is lost if you drink too much alcohol. If you don’t normally drink alcohol, you shouldn’t start drinking it as a way to lower your blood pressure. There’s more potential harm than benefits to drinking alcohol.
    5.  Breath Deeply : slow breathing and meditative practice such as quiting, yoga and tai chi decreases stress hormone, which elevate renin, a kidney enzyme that raises blood pressure. Try 5 minutes in the morning and at night. Inhale deeply and expand your belly. Exhale and release all of your tension.
    6.  Relax With Music : Need to bring down your blood pressure a bit more than medication, try listening to music, the right tune can help, it helps  to relax your mind and tissues.

  • FOREIGN NEWS :"WONDERS SHALL NEVER END " as parents climb school walls to help children cheat in Exams.

    By Nelson Amaobi Osuala

It is no gainsaying the fact that in today’s world, examination is no longer the yardstick of measuring student’s success premised upon the bitter truth that there are many unholy activities that are perpetrated before, during and after the said Exams and such activities have succeeded in crippling the standard of our educational systems.

A critical evaluation of the Nigerian educational system reveals that year in, year out, our system continue to produce Half-baked graduates from both the post primary and tertiary institutions.

The question that readily comes to mind is : Who do we blame for such decadence? Should we blame It on the lackadaisical attitude of our wards towards their Studies Or should the teachers and lecturers be held responsible due to failure to impart quality education because they seem often times than not, ill prepared for lectures as they demonstrate disgracefully, a non challant attitude to duties!

To further question, should the Government be held responsible, as a result of the dilapidated structure of our schools which lack basic amenities, standard library, comfortable learning environments and the good teaching aides and equipments?

It is to my mind, one or more of these factors that informed the rationality of Indian parents to take a radical approach of scaling through school walls to help provide their children with extraneous materials to aide the children success in their Exams.
Reports had It that during the Indian equivalent to GSCE (government senior certificate Examination) time, parents were spotted climbing the gigantic walls of a school building in their droves to help children cheat in Exams.

In a remarkable footage as shown, the families of pupils can be seen climbing to perilous heights to pass through window blinds what in our local Nigerian cliche could mean ” expo”, “ekpo” “orijo” etc. These ‘spirited’ parents ensured that their child receives the prepared answers to their Exams questions.

The footage taken at the VIDYA NIKETAN school in the eastern state of BIHAR, has resulted in the expulsion of more than 600 pupils.  Parents were also seen staging similar interventions in the cities of HAJIPUR and NAWADA, with one parent telling that they were forced to take drastic action because “Teachers don’t teach anything as they often fail to turn up to classes”.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Akpabio Plots Escape Route … Purchase $2.5 Billion Submarine From BAE UK

    By Dan Etokidem  25 March 2015 10:29
    > … Camps ex- KGB agents as private guards in Ukana residence
    > … Deputy Chief Whip vows to kill APC members at polling unit
    > …State security compromised – Essien Udim group.
The Reclaim Essien Udim Group has raised an alarm that state security has been compromised by Governor Godswill Akpabio whom the group accuse of buying a $2.5billion submarine from BAE Systems Maritime, a United Kingdom based Submarine manufacturing company. The decision to buy the underwater transport device from the UK firm was arrived at after efforts to purchase it from Triton Submarines,a subsidiary of the US Submarines Inc was rebuffed by the US firm investigation reveals.
The group said Akpabio plan is to abscond from the country with the submarine through the Ikot Abasi axis of the Atlantic ocean following intelligence reports to the governor that the possibility of escaping from the country by air should power change hands from the ruling party to the rival APC and he becomes a hunted man by anti corruption agencies is nearly impossible. AKPABIO it is alleged is exploring the possibility of seeking political asylum in Russia if Buhari becomes president and his rival UMANA UMANA wins the April 11th Governorship election. He considers UMANA becoming his successor as his greatest nightmare.
The Reclaim Essien Udim group said the purchase of a military submarine by a civilian governor just weeks to Nigeria’s most contentious election is a cause of concern to not just Essien Udim people but the state and country at large and have threatened to petition the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“We want to use this medium to alert the world that state security has been compromised by Governor Akpabio of Akwa Ibom state whose desperation has reached a high level of impunity never unheard of in the history of the state. We have credible intelligence that the Governor has just recently acquired a $2.5billion submarine to aid him escaping from the state should Gen. Buhari and Umana Umana win the general elections. But the real intention behind the purchase may be more than just escaping which calls for vigilance by the people, caution on the part of the governor Akpabio and a probe by relevant authorities”,the release stated.
“Akwa Ibom state has never made itself ungovernable, people make it ungovernable. The state has never woken up to make itself unlivable, people make it unlivable. We can no longer live in pretence that we don’t know how we get into our numerous problem as a state. Any attempt to subvert the general elections will be resisted by the people” the group warned.
The group also alleged that governor Akpabio is presently camping some private guards believed to be ex KGB agents from Russia at his private residence in Ukana raising the fears of the possibility of foreign mercenaries being used to either rig the elections or go after perceived opposition members.
“We find it funny that the governor’s private residence in Ukana has been turned into a secret camping location for foreign mercenaries brought in by the governor in addition to hundreds of Toyota buses currently hidden in Ukana to be used to rig the polls. This situation is more worrisome when we place this frightening dimension the elections is going with last weeks threat from the State Deputy Chief Whip and Member representing Essien Udim in the State House of Assembly,HON Emmanuel Akpan who while addressing chiefs and kinsmen at the Customary Court Urua Arit in Odoro Ikot warned that all APC members should stay five miles away from the polling unit or risk being killed.
This threat might just be a confirmation of covert deadly conspiracy being plotted by the governor and his kitchen cabinet against opposition”.
A source who spoke with our reporter on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter said while it is true that the governor has bought numerous buses for the election, the allegation of camping foreign mercenaries is still sketchy as only tourists who visited the state and decided to visit the governors hometown just for sight scene to have a first hand experience of the governments transformation agenda were sighted in Ukana a fortnight ago.
Attempt to confirm the purchase of the submarine from the manufacturers through their London Head Office proved abortive as an email sent to them was not replied as at press time but information on the companies official website reveals that BAE Systems is a global defence, aerospace and security company with a wide range of products and services covering air, land and naval forces as well as advanced electronics, security, information technology and support services. The company also design and manufacture naval ships and submarines,as well as their state of the art combat systems and equipment. The company is currently constructing the Astute-class submarine, a new generation nuclear attack submarine for the Royal Navy, the website posted.
