  • NEWS: Meet The Baby Born With No Eyes Photos

    By William Oyo-Ita 3 April 2015

Care worker Danielle Davis, 24, and her partner, Andrew Smith, 31, from South Wales  welcomed a daughter two months ago – a baby with no eyes. Danielle said she knew there was something horrible wrong with her child because a routine scan when she was pregnant showed her child had a cyst on the brain but she refused to have an abortion. After the child was born, doctors confirmed she had anophthalmia, a birth defect which affects just one in 10,000 babies.

“It was a shock – we had never heard of it before. But she is our gorgeous baby and we have no regrets about turning down a termination.” Danielle said

“We want to give Daisy as normal a life as possible and give her the same opportunities as other children. We had never heard of the condition before and neither had any of our friends or family. People didn’t really know what to say when we told them.

“The cyst showed up on the 21-week scan and naturally we were worried about it. But none of the doctors said our baby could be born blind. Everyone has been really supportive and I can’t thank the doctors and midwives enough for all of their help.”

Little Daisy will later this month go for an operation to fit glass eyes. And when she’s 18months old, they will be replaced with painted eyes that will look more natural.

Members of Somali Islamic sect, Al-Shabab, stormed Kenyan’s Garissa University College very early this morning and massacred students and staff of the school.According to new reports, 147 people lost their lives in the horrific incident which is so far the deadliest terrorist attack in Kenya. Another 79 people were seriously injured.

According to Kenyan security forces, of the 815 students in the college, 500 were rescued, 147 were killed and the rest – 166 – have not been properly accounted for. Some are believed to have been taken hostage. Kenya government claim they killed four of the terrorists. See some photos from the incident after the cut, but be warned, one of the photos shows dead students killed in their classroom..
Five gunmen gained entry into the university, which is close to an army barracks, after killing guards at the main gate. They massacred some students they found inside lecture halls who were working on their assignments while others were killed in their halls of residence

    Kenyan President spoke to the nation in a TV broadcast and said the attackers had taken hostages;

“I am saddened to inform the nation that early today, terrorists attacked Garissa University College, killed and wounded several people and have taken others hostage. On behalf of my government, I extend condolences to the families of those who have perished in this attack. We continue to pray for the quick recovery of the injured, and the safe rescue of those held hostage.” he said.

Kenya’s Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet said the terrorists had taken positions in the students’ hostels.

“The attackers forced their way into the university by shooting at the guards who were manning the main gate. The attackers shot indiscriminately once inside the compound. Police officers who were at the time guarding the university hostels heard the gunshots and responded swiftly and engaged the gunmen in a fierce shootout. • POLITICS: Full Text Of President Goodluck Jonathan's Concession Speech To General Mohammadu Buhari

    By Efio-Ita Nyok |3 April 2015| 7:00 am
You are about to read the details of the historic phone call that changed Nigeria forever!
It’s perceived to be a historic phone call because it ushered in an unprecedented era of peace in contemporary Nigeria, owing to the fact that should have the incumbent President Jonathan insisted on holding on to the reins of power, refusing to accept defeat in the 28 March 2015 presidential election, there would have been serious tension between the north/southwest and southeast/south south of the country.
President Jonathan averted that uncanny future by immediately conceding to his arch political rival, Mohammadu Buhari. By this one action he became a statesman both in Africa’s most populous nation and the continent at large. In my opinion, he should be awarded a Nobel Laureate for peace.
Below is the full script of the speech, please.
Caller: Your excellency, sir. Hope I’m speaking with General Buhari, sir. President Goodluck Jonathan would like to speak with you, sir.
    Receiver: Yes. Okay, hold on.
    Jonathan: Your Excellency
    Receiver: Hold on, sir.
    Buhari: Your Excellency
Jonathan: Your Excellency, how are you?
    Buhari: I’m all right.
    Jonathan: (Laughter) Congratulations
Buhari: Thank you very much, your Excellency.
    Jonathan: So, how are things?
Buhari: Well, I’d congratulate you more because you….
Jonathan: In a few days find time to come so that we can sort out how to plan the transitional period.
Buhari: Alright, Your Excellency. Thank you very much
    Jonathan: Okay, congratulations
Buhari: My respects, Your Excellency. Thank you.

  • ENTERTAINMENT: Nigerian Politics Is Like Nollywood – Wole Soyinka

    By William Oyo-Ita 2 April 2015
Foremost writer and Nobel Prize winner, Wole Soyinka has likened Nigerian politics, especially the current electoral process, to the Nollywood Film Industry. In an interview with Guardian, the respected writer and political critic also blasted Nigerian politicians for being wasteful and criticized the ongoing electioneering process as a disguise for money laundering. “Most expensive, most prodigal, wasteful, senseless, I mean really insensitive in terms of what people live on in this country. This was the real naira-dollar extravaganza, spent on just subverting, shall we say, the natural choices of people. Just money instead of argument, instead of position statements. And of course the sponsoring of violence in various places, in addition to this festive atmosphere in which every corner, every pillar, every electric pole is adorned with one candidate or the other, many of them in poses which remind one of Nollywood. I get a feeling sometimes that some of these candidates were just locked in their wardrobes and they were told: ‘Just take selfies in there and don’t come out until you’ve finished the entire wardrobe.’ All kinds of postures. Just ridiculous. It has been an embarrassing exercise in terms of electioneering.”

He continued, ” I get a feeling sometimes that some of these candidates were just locked in their wardrobes and they were told: ‘Just take selfies in there and don’t come out until you’ve finished the entire wardrobe.’ All kinds of postures. Just ridiculous. It has been an embarrassing exercise in terms of electioneering…Obviously this money didn’t come from personal pockets only, there’s no question. It’s been bankrolled by lots of businesspeople – many of them I’m sure have been taxed indirectly – and they’ll be expecting some returns for this outlay, and so how are we actually going to get rid of this thing called corruption, if the electoral process itself has been so corrupted? It’s a money election.”
Soyinka did not make secret of the fact that the president-elect Muhammadu Buhari was his preferred candidate in the run-off to the presidential elections.
