  • San Jose Sharks’ Nikolai Kovalenko unsure about return to NHL, team

SAN JOSE – The San Jose Sharks believed winger Nikolai Kovalenko would be a part of their future when they acquired him as part of the trade that sent goalie Mackenzie Blackwood to the Colorado Avalanche in December.

But after a frustrating first few months in San Jose, Kovalenko’s outlook with the Sharks appears murky at best, with the 25-year-old forward saying Thursday that he’d like to be back with the team but only if his usage changes and his playing time increases.

Between injuries and repeated healthy scratches, including seven in a nine-game span from March 15 to April 5, Kovalenko had 12 points in 29 games with the Sharks as he was moved up and down and in and out of the lineup.

Since the trade, Kovalenko averaged 12:40 in ice time with the Sharks, ninth most among all forwards still with the organization. The Sharks (20-50-12) ended their season with a 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday and finished last in the NHL with 52 points.

Kovalenko, a pending restricted free agent, revealed Thursday that two general managers from the Kontinental Hockey League, where he spent five-plus seasons before coming to North America last April, have already contacted him.

In a recent interview with Russia Hockey, Nikolai’s father, longtime NHL player Andrei Kovalenko, said, “Overall, there’s discontent from (Nikolai’s) side,” and that his son’s agent was talking with his former KHL team, Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, about a possible return.

The website also reported that Andrei Kovalenko recently met with Sharks general manager Mike Grier, his former Oilers teammate.

Nikolai Kovalenko said his dream is to play in the NHL. On Thursday, when the Sharks met as a team for the final time this season, he was asked if he wants to stay with San Jose if he remains in the NHL.

“I think it’s a good question for Mike Grier, not for me,” Kovalenko said, “and if he would like me to stay, we’ll have a conversation about this. If not, OK, we’ll find just another team.”

The Sharks need to issue a qualifying offer to Kovalenko by late June if they want to retain his rights. If Kovalenko leaves for the KHL without a trade to another NHL team, the Sharks would still hold his NHL rights.

Does Kovalenko want to return to San Jose if Grier wants him back?

“I think if it will be the same thing like this year, obviously not,” Kovalenko said, referring to his playing time. “So, maybe if something changed, or something like that, we can have this conversation.”

Kovalenko missed 14 games with the Sharks this season because of injury, including nine straight games from Feb. 4 to March 4. He returned to the lineup on March 6 when the Sharks played the Avalanche in Denver and dressed for six of the next seven games.

Kovalenko was scratched for six straight games from March 27 to April 5. The scratches coincided with the arrival of forward prospect Cam Lund, who signed his entry-level contract with the Sharks on March 21 and made his NHL debut six days later.

Asked about his message to Kovalenko, Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky, earlier this month, said, “I think every time you’re on the ice, if it’s a practice, if it’s a morning skate, that’s your game. You’re always being evaluated.”

Kovalenko played the season’s final six games and saw increased ice time, playing at times on a line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. In the final six games, Kovalenko had a goal and two assists and averaged over 15 minutes in ice time, revealing that he can perhaps be an asset to the Sharks.

Sharks veteran center Alexander Wennberg saw Kovalenko’s ability but noted that if someone wants to play more, it must be on merit.

“I feel like you kind of earn your ice time,” said Wennberg, who just finished his 11th NHL season. “Obviously, everyone wants to play more, but you’ve got to leave it all out there. I don’t have any secret recipe for how you play more or not. But if you look around the room, there are so many talented players. Everyone wants to play more. Everyone wants to play the power play and all that.

“So it comes down to you, your work ethic, and how much you want to do it, and (Kovalenko’s) doing a good job. But obviously, it’s competitive. Everyone here wants to do the same thing as well. So the only thing you can do is try to be better than the guy next to you. That helps everyone push to a higher level and helps the team.”

  • Cross Rivers Reaches Out-Of-Court Settlement To Re-acquire Rubber Estates

The Cross River State Executive Council has approved the terms of an out-of-court settlement that will enable the government to re-acquire the defunct rubber estates formerly managed by Enghaut Industries Limited.

The resolution was reached at the exco meeting held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, during which the council formally ratified the terms of settlement in Suit No. HC/162/2025—Enghaut Industries Limited vs. the Attorney General of Cross River State and another.

The agreement paves way for the state to regain ownership of rubber plantation assets previously belonging to the defunct Cross River Estates Limited (CREL), covering approximately 22,000 hectares across Akamkpa, Biase, and Yakurr Local Government Areas.

This move aligns with Governor Bassey Otu’s commitment to reclaim and revitalize state-owned assets for the greater benefit of Cross Riverians. The state had revoked the Certificate of Occupancy granted to Enghaut Industries on June 14, 2024, citing the company’s failure to manage the estates effectively.

The government argued that poor management had led to significant degradation and the loss of the estate’s status as a leading rubber production hub in Nigeria—prompting legal action from Enghaut.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Otu expressed satisfaction with the amicable resolution, noting that it opens the door for fresh investment and economic revitalization.

“With this settlement, we can now explore partnerships with serious investors to unlock the full potential of the rubber estates, create jobs, and develop a thriving value chain that will benefit the people of Cross River State,” the governor stated.

The meeting also marked Governor Otu’s first official Exco session after returning from a three-week vacation. He commended his deputy, Peter Odey, for ably steering the affairs of the state during his absence, and appreciated the Executive Council for their collective support and stability during the period.

Otu further announced that three key roads have been prioritized for immediate rehabilitation as part of the state’s infrastructure renewal programme. These include the Boki East-West Road, the Okpoma–Mfum Junction Road, and the John Okpa Road in Obubra.

He described the late John Okpa, a former Deputy Governor, as a “pillar of democracy” whose legacy deserves continued recognition through tangible development efforts.

Highlighting the economic importance of Ikom as a major border town, Governor Otu disclosed plans to expand the town’s infrastructure by establishing an international market and a modern motor park.

“The cross-border trade between Nigeria and Cameroon, along with Ikom’s role as a hub for agricultural produce, auto parts, and residential growth, makes it a critical point of focus. We are determined to provide the necessary support to match its potential,” he said.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, RmPeter Odey; the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh; the Head of Service, Dr. Innocent Eteng; the Chief of Staff, Hon. Emmanuel Ironbar; and members of the State Executive Council.

  • 49ers bring back exclusive rights free agents Pleasants, Tonges

The 49ers signed two exclusive rights free agents Thursday to one-year contracts — tackle Austin Pleasants and tight end Jake Tonges.

The signings were announced on the club’s “X” account.

Pleasants, 27, was signed late last season when it became clear left tackle Trent Williams would not return. He played three games with 67 snaps at left tackle, sharing the position with Charlie Heck.

Other tackles currently on the roster are Williams, right tackle Colton McKivitz, Jalen McKenzie, Sebastian Gutierrez and Isaac Alarcon. With 11 draft picks, the 49ers are expected to take at least one tackle in the NFL Draft April 24-26.

Alarcon received a six-game suspension Wednesday for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing drugs. He is eligible to stay with the team until the season starts and his suspension begins should he make it that far.

Tonges, 25, played in all 16 games for the 49ers, primarily on special teams, where he had 232 snaps and had two tackles. A Cal product who played four games in 2023 with the Chicago Bears, Tongue played 34 snaps on offense but was not targeted with a pass.

  • Want to know which changes from Tekken 8’s emergency update are most impactful? PhiDX has a great breakdown of the new patch

Tekken 8 Season 2 certainly got off on the wrong foot when it released at the start of the month, and the developers are working quickly to try and improve the game to a spot where players are happier with it.

Bandai Namco just released a large emergency update for Tekken 8 last night, but there’s a lot of changes to make sense of.

Player and content creator PhiDX released a really good breakdown of the new patch shortly after its release that fans should check out.

PhiDX goes over all of the universal and character adjustments in a straightforward way to offer up his insight on what’s most important and impactful.

After that, he provides a summary of the update as well as his pros and cons of what Bamco did this time around.

For the good, he notes the lessened frame advantage on a lot of moves allows for more counterplay as well as the toned down chip damage.

PhiDX also likes the change that makes Heat Engagers +9 instead of +17, but he still has quite a few issues with where the game is at currently.

For cons, he lists how a lot of the homing attacks were left intact to check side stepping while much of the cast is still stance and mixup focused.

And though the damage nerfs and increased health leads to more interactions, those are still less deep than he’d like to see.

So it seems the developers still have their work cut out for them, and hopefully more can be fixed in the next patch set for mid-May.

We recommend checking out PhiDX’s full video below to get a better sense of what these emergency update changes mean for Tekken 8 moving forward.
