In response to the escalating insecurity and deadly violence in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Partners for Peace in the Niger Delta (P4P) has embarked on a proactive approach to address the challenges. As part of their 2023 project year, P4P has rolled out over 72 intervention proposals aimed at combating violence in more than 150 communities across the nine states of the Niger Delta region.
During a two-day joint coordinators and CWC meeting held in Warri, Delta State, coordinators from various states presented their intervention proposals for approval.
The proposed interventions encompass a wide range of issues, including communal violence, cultism, Gender and Sexual Based Violence, Drug Abuse, Gansterism, Internet fraud, Kidnapping, and sea piracy. These critical topics were extensively discussed during the meeting, which brought together representatives from the network.
Addressing the attendees, High Chief Pius Akomolafe, the National Coordinator of P4P, emphasized the need for innovative thinking and effective implementation of the projects across the region. He stressed the importance of leveraging professional peacebuilding skills and experience to achieve tangible results.
Chief Akomolafe acknowledged that the project year had a delayed start due to setbacks the network encountered earlier. However, he expressed optimism about the forthcoming successes as the members of the network venture into the field with their respective interventions.
“We have faced challenges that caused delays in starting this project year. Some of our staff members moved on to pursue other opportunities. Nevertheless, we have since made necessary adjustments and restructuring to adapt to the changes,” Chief Akomolafe explained.
He further urged the network to explore creative alternatives for funding and encouraged innovative approaches in addressing the pressing issues at hand.
The coordinators from different states expressed their readiness and optimism in contributing their share to mitigate crises and reduce violence in the Niger Delta region.
