Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti has approved the immediate relocation of the Umuahia campus of Abia State University, Uturu, back to the main campus at Uturu, except the Law Faculty which will follow suit after its ongoing accreditation exercise.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed this on Monday while briefing the press at Government House Umuahia on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by the Governor, noted that the development was part of the reform agenda contained in the white paper report of the institution’s visitation panel.
“Except for the Faculty of Law that will be undergoing some form of accreditation, the rest of the departments and faculties in Umuahia should go back.
“Once they are through with the accreditation process, they will join suit and relocate back to Uturu.
“Campuses are consolidated in one particular location to enhance the studies for the students.
“The honourable commissioner for tertiary education is to ensure full compliance of this relocation,” Kanu said.
The Information Commissioner said the USAID sponsored water project aimed at resuscitating moribond regional water schemes across the state would be flagged off by the Governor on the 20th of November 2024 with Ariaria and Ubakala water schemes taking the lead.
He further informed that the ‘Ten Million Know and Control Your Number’ health programme has been extended to the end of this week to enable more Abians to benefit from the exercise.
Kanu noted that a total number of 33,000 persons have been screened so far under the programme and called on Abians and residents to take advantage of the extension period to participate in the free screening exercise
He said the State Government would on Thursday, hold an interdenominational service in honour of the first democratically elected Governor of the State, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia while his remains would be laid to rest on Friday this week at his country home of Ebonyi State.
The Commissioner for Local Government and chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, his Power and public Utilities counterpart Mr Ikechukwu Monday were present at the briefing.
