Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti has approved 70 years retirement age for human health workers and medical consultants.
The approval which was announced through a circular dated 6 September 2024 and signed by the Head of service Dr Mrs N. Obioma is aimed at addressing the shortage of human health workers which has denied most Abians easy access to medical attention.
The circular which is with effect from 12 August 2024 superseded the statutory retirement age and years of service of human health professionals and medical consultants as contained in the public service rules.
“His Excellency Dr Alex Otti, the executive governor of Abia state in furtherance his administration’s policy of redefining the healthcare delivery landscape of the state has approved an upward review of the statutory retirement age and years of service of all human health professionals and medical consultant to be sixty-five (65) years and forty (40) years, whichever comes first while the years of service of medical consultants is seventy (70) years.
“This policy is predicated on the vision of the Governor to chart a new trajectory to address the shortage of human health workers in Abia State, which is negatively impinging on prompt and effective as well as easy access to medical attention to Abians.
“This circular, which is with effect from 12 August,2024 , supersede the statutory retirement age and years of human health professionals and medical consultants as contained in the public service rules and other extant rules of service.”
