In an effort to “highlight the essential role of liturgical music in Orthodox Christian worship and the important role of church musicians in the life of the Church,” the Holy Synod of the OCA established the new annual designation, which is to be marked on the Sunday following the feast of St. Romanos the Melodist (October 1), reports the OCA.

On “Church Musician Sunday,” parishes are encouraged to publicly recognize all those who labor for the beauty of the services: choir directors, singers, chanters, readers, composers, arrangers, and bell-ringers.

Additionally, articles will be posted on the site of the OCA throughout the coming week to help parishioners and parish leaders reflect upon “the many essential responsibilities of those who lead the musical responses during the Divine services.”
