Opp firefighters respond to residential fires

The Opp Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire Thursday morning.
Firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire, located at 216 W. Covington Ave., at 5:39 a.m. At the time of the dispatch, Engine 8 and Rescue 9 were working other incidents and those units arrived 3 minutes later.
Upon arrival, firefighters reported heavy fire showing from the front of the residence. Two occupants of the home had already vacated the building and no injuries were reported.
Officials with the OFD expressed its gratitude to the Elba Fire Department and Babbie Volunteer Fire Department for a quick mutual aid response.
Later that same morning, OFD firefighters responded to a second structure fire at 11:02 a.m. on High Street, near Westview Assembly of God. That fire was contained to the kitchen area of the home with no injuries reported.
