One person lost his life while many others sustained injuries in a multiple-car crash that occurred on Saturday at Ile-Epo Bus stop, Oko Afa, along the Lagos-Badagry expressway in Lagos State.
Involved in the accident were a DAF truck, a Toyota bus laden to capacity with passengers, a Volkswagon commercial bus and a Nissan car.
Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the deceased’s body was taken to the morgue and the injured victims ferried to nearby hospitals by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
He attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving, explaining that the driver of the DAF truck lost control while at high speed, crashing into the three affected vehicles.
“Upon the arrival of the Dolphin Response Team at the incident scene, it was discovered that a fully laden DAF truck, registration number FFF 754 XB, a white Toyota, Hummer bus, owned by Cross Country Transport, registration number, MUS 210 YJ, laden to capacity with passengers, a Volkswagon commercial bus, registration number LSR 166 YE and a Nissan car, registration number unknown, were involved in a multiple car crash at the aforementioned location,” Oke-Osanyintolu said on Sunday.
“Further investigations by the LRT at the incident scene revealed that the incident occurred as a result of reckless driving on the side of the truck driver who lost control at high speed, which resulted in a crash into the three affected vehicles.”
The Saturday accident comes just a week after an ambulance driver lost his life after his vehicle collided with a truck in the Gbagada area of the state.
The accident occurred after the truck, while in motion, was struck from the side, causing the driver to lose control and swerve into another lane. The approaching ambulance, moving at high speed, then crashed into the truck.
