The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday, inaugurated a mass metering programme christened ‘O’Datiwa Meters’ to improve access to electricity in the state.
The initiative, according to Aitedatiwa, was aimed at ending inflated electricity bills and ensuring transparency in the metering system.
Speaking at the inauguration on Tuesday, the governor said the ‘O’Datiwa’ meters would ensure fairness and an efficient electricity supply system.
He added that accurate metering was not only a technical necessity but a fundamental right of all consumers.
“This programme marks a crucial step in our commitment to provide a reliable and equitable electricity billing system to every citizen.
“By subsidising the meters, the government aims to address energy theft and inefficient billing practices by ensuring that residents of Ondo State pay for the energy they consume only,’’ he said.
Aiyedatiwa said that the state government was preparing to venture into power generation, transmission and distribution.
He called on electricity generating and distribution companies to collaborate with the state government.
According to him, the transfer of electricity oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau (SERB) is a milestone for the state’s power sector.
“This transfer will allow the state to manage its electricity sector more effectively, tailoring policies to the specific needs of its people,” he stated.
The state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Rasaq Obe, described the initiative as a demonstration of Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to improving the lives of the people.
