Commuters traveling on Montlake Boulevard will soon experience a smoother and more efficient journey as the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announces the opening of new lanes on the on-ramp to westbound state Route 520 (SR 520). The improved infrastructure is expected to alleviate traffic congestion for the approximately 40,000 drivers who traverse this intersection daily.
Starting Monday, drivers entering SR 520 from Montlake Boulevard will benefit from a redesigned on-ramp that provides a more seamless transition onto the highway. While it may take some time for motorists to adjust to the changes, both northbound and southbound travelers on Montlake Boulevard will experience the positive impact of this upgrade.
These turn lanes are just one element of a larger project undertaken by WSDOT to enhance the SR 520 and Montlake Boulevard corridor. The comprehensive initiative, set to be fully completed by this summer, aims to improve transportation for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. As part of the project, a new three-acre lid will be constructed, covering the highway and featuring transit stops and open green spaces. Additionally, a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian bridge will be built east of the lid, providing enhanced connectivity.
Looking ahead, WSDOT has ambitious plans for the SR 520 corridor. By the late 2020s, the department aims to replace all of SR 520’s bridges with stronger structures, extend bus and carpool lanes, establish a regional bicycle/pedestrian path from Seattle to Redmond, and construct safer on- and off-ramps with improved connections to transit and local streets. These future developments will further enhance transportation options and safety for all users of the SR 520 corridor.
As Monday marks the beginning of this new and improved on-ramp, commuters are encouraged to remain alert and adjust their travel routines accordingly. The WSDOT is committed to ensuring a smooth transition and is eager to see the positive impact that this infrastructure upgrade will have on the daily commute for thousands of drivers in the area.
