Mortal Kombat 1’s first and latest DLC character, Invincible’s Omni-Man, holds a lot of surprises that fans are still finding. Outside of the best combos and tech to use for the fighter — as well as a weird bug that allows Omni-Man to pull the screen and reposition his opponent using his air back dash — some of the best little Easter eggs have been found within the character’s pre-fight dialogue with other kombatants.
We recently saw Sindel revisit her most iconic line from the Mortal Kombat movie when going up against Omni-Man, but she isn’t the only one who uses movie lines in her intros. Omni-Man is voiced in the source material and in Mortal Kombat 1 by accomplished actor J.K. Simmons, and it has now been confirmed that the Superman-like villain actually tosses out one of Simmons’ lines from his role in the movie Whiplash — and it’s fantastic.
Whiplash was released back in 2014 and follows a promising young drummer who aims to be one of the greatest Jazz drummers of all time. Attending school at a cut-throat music conservatory, the drummer becomes the student of Simmons’ character — an established teacher by the name of Mr. Fletcher — whose teachings are incredibly intense and borderline abusive as a means of creating the next Jazz legend.
Fletcher only accepts the best of the best, which means that throughout the movie he gets the opportunity to hurl insults and curse words at his students whenever they mess up. In one scene, Fletcher is speaking to his band as someone tries to enter his space and interrupt him to give him a message.
Without skipping a beat, Simmons’ character breaks his train of thought and rolls right into threatening the person and telling them to leave. He delivers a cold and convincing, “Get the f*** out of my sight before I demolish you!” and naturally the person who this is directed at can be seen standing there scared and timid.
In Mortal Kombat 1, Omni-Man delivers nearly an identical line to Johnny Cage during one of their pre-fight clashes. It is legitimately the line from Whiplash, just without the curse word.
“You know, you could use some anger management training,” Johnny says to the powerful villain. Omni-Man responds by saying, “Get out of my sight before I demolish you!”
When I first heard that J.K. Simmons would actually be voicing Omni-Man in Mortal Kombat 1, there was a part of me that hoped NetherRealm Studios would inject a reference to Whiplash into the character. The movie and Simmons’ performance are fantastic, and NRS absolutely crushed it with this Easter egg.
