Nigeria Suffer Second Consecutive Defeat In Cricket World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s male U-19 cricket team suffered a second consecutive defeat to Tanzania in the 2026 ICC U-19 Men’s World Cup qualifiers in Lagos.

The Junior Yellow Greens failed to recover from their first defeat to Namibia on Friday; this time around, they lost by a whopping 122 runs to dent their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

Tanzania won the toss and elected to bat in the first inning; their captain, Laksh Bakrania, led the charge with 44 runs off 79 balls.

Darpan Jobanputra also added to Nigeria’s misery with 32 off 83 balls to give 154 runs on the board for the loss of 10 wickets in 47.2 overs at the break.

Nigeria earned 32 runs for the loss of 10 wickets in just 16.1 overs, falling short of the 155 runs in the second innings to win the game.

Khalidy Amiri Juma recorded four wickets, while Laksh earned three wickets for 11 runs to lead Tanzania to a vital victory.

The win propelled Tanzania to the top of the table with four points ahead of Kenya and Namibia by a superior net run rate.

Kenya recorded a seven-wicket victory over Uganda for their second consecutive win in the qualifiers. Uganda are also winless in their first two matches in the series.

The top team at the end of the qualifiers will qualify for the ICC U-19 Men’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Namibia and Zimbabwe next year.

Nigeria currently occupy the bottom position in the group without a point, plus a net run rate deficit of -1.320.

In 2019, Nigeria secured the ticket to represent Africa in the ICC U-19 Men’s World Cup hosted in South Africa in 2020 after winning the African qualifiers.
