NFL Coaching Vacancies: Who to watch for?

Weeks after the 2021 NFL regular season ended, seven of the nine vacant head coaching positions remain in search of replacements.

The Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears were the first teams to announce the hiring of their new head coaches, Nathaniel Hackett, former offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, and Matt Eberflus, former defensive coordinator for the Colts, respectively.

The cascade of head coach firings and departures began with the Jacksonville Jaguars dispensing with Urban Meyer on December 16, as well as the Las Vegas Raiders with interim Rich Bisaccia (following Jon Gruden’s resignation in October), the Broncos fired Vic Fangio after three seasons, as did the Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, New York Giants and Houston Texans.

This week, Sean Payton announced his departure from the New Orleans Saints and that makes seven teams that have requested interviews with candidates for the positions.

New Orleans Saints

Former coach: Sean Payton (stepping away from team). Buccaneers OC Byron Leftwich, Lions DC Aaron Glenn and New Orleans DC Dennis Allen are among head coaching candidates.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Former coach: Urban Meyer (fired). Among head coaching candidates are former Eagles HC Doug Pederson (interviewed), former Colts and Lions HC Jim Caldwell (interviewed), Cowboys OC Kellen Moore, Buccaneers OC Byron Leftwich (interviewed), Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles (interviewed), Alabama OC Bill O’Brien and Jags interim HC Darrell Bevell.

Minnesota Vikings

Former coach: Mike Zimmer (fired). Among head coaching candidates are Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles, Cowboys OC Kellen Moore, Rams OC Kevin O’Connell, Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon, 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn and Rams DC Raheem Morris.

Miami Dolphins

Former coach: Brian Flores (fired). Among head coaching candidates are Bills OC Brian Daboll, 49ers OC Mike McDaniel, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, Cardinals DC Vance Joseph, Cowboys OC Kellen Moore, Bills DC Leslie Frazier and Rams AHC/RBs Thomas Brown.

New York Giants

Former coach: Joe Judge (fired). Among head coaching candidates are Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, former Dolphins HC Brian Flores, Bills OC Brian Daboll, Bills DC Leslie Frazier, Giants DC Patrick Graham and Bengals DC Lou Anarumo.

Houston Texans

Former coach: David Culley (fired). Among head coaching candidates are former Dolphins HC Brian Flores, Chargers OC Joe Lombardi, Florida Atlantic WRs coach Hines Ward, Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon, former QB Josh McCown, Rams OC Kevin O’Connell.

Las Vegas Raiders

Former coach: Jon Gruden (resigned). Among head coaching candidates are Bisaccia, Patriots ILB coach Jerod Mayo, 49ers OC Demeco Ryans, Patriots OC Josh McDaniels (per ESPN’s Adam Schefter) and Patriots personnel executive Dave Ziegler (interviewed).
